Ain't that the way? MCA unceremoniously drops one of country music's legendary figures and then turns around and puts out a 12-song synopsis of his MCA tenure. Culled from his seven not-as-bad-as-you-might-think 1990s releases, this singles-heavy compilation wavers in terms of material quality and production values, but Possum's still Possum and his unique vocal abilities haven't yet abandoned him. When he gently caresses "You Couldn't Get the Picture," growls through "I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair," and sympathetically and sensitively renders Bobby Braddock's poignant "Wild Irish Rose," Jones's pained voice still has the power to move. Not the place to begin your Possum appreciation by any means, but worth getting to at some point. --Marc Greilsamer

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Who dares trot out the contradictions between Jones's dissolute life and the sentiments of these songs when the man has always been such a True Believer of some sort? He calls this his musical response to the infamous 1999 car wreck that caused him to finally give up booze, caffeine, and tobacco. Circuit-preacher's son Billy Sherrill, who guided Jones's 1970s commercial ascension, came out of retirement to produce these 24 songs (on two discs) and, especially for a guy accused back then of gussying up country too much, he forges an austere sound. Jones's voice can't execute the many twists, turns, and tricks it once did, but it's still ripe with deep feeling; when he sings "I'm so tired and so weary," you don't doubt him. So forgive them both for trying too hard occasionally ("The Old Rugged Cross") and appreciate this for the old-school testimonial, musical and spiritual, that it is. --John MorthlandCustomer Reviews:

All of the essential Mercury hits.......2005-03-30
Compared with the earlier compilation, there are some notable omissions including Accidentally on purpose, Seasons of my heart and Tall tall trees. I can understand the difficulty of getting everything that matters on to a single CD but I think these three songs could have been included. Even so, none of these songs are absolutely essential (those who disagree will buy Cup of loneliness instead).
Most of George's most famous songs came after he left Mercury but among the classic tracks here are Why baby why, I'm ragged but I'm right, Color of the blues, White lightning, Who shot Sam, Window up above and Tender years.
While this collection cannot be as comprehensive as Cup of loneliness, it achieves its purpose of providing all of George's important early hits on a single CD. Building a collection of George's music can be very expensive. For most people, this will be sufficient to represent the early years.

Amazon.com essential recording
From the day he first recorded in 1954, George Jones seemed to care not so much about the quality of the songs, but reveled, like the rest of us, in the thrill of hearing his voice as it snaked from surreal honky-tonk yelps and dips, to novelty-number skips and romps, to the elongated vowels of his wringing ballads. The result is that Jones, for all his celebrated greatness, also recorded more than his share of junk. Of the repackaging of his early work, this Razor & Tie collection is among the best. But the big Starday and Mercury hits are nowhere to be found, as the two-disc, 40-song compilation covers his United Artists sides from 1962 to 1965 ("She Thinks I Still Care," "The Race Is On"), including six duets with Melba Montgomery ("We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds") that preceded his union with Tammy Wynette. Long underrated, these recordings capture Jones in his transition from stark honky-tonk to the florid emotionalism of his Epic years, developing his intensely personal style along the way. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
George's UA classics, 1962-1965.......2002-07-29
Plenty of hits followed, including Open pit mine, A girl I used to know (later a hit for Porter and Dolly as Just someone I used to know), Not what I had in mind, You comb her hair, Your heart turned left, Where does a little tear come from and The race is on (later a hit for Sawyer Brown). All these and other lesser hits from this period are included.
George's duet partner of the time, Melba Montgomery, is seriously under-represented on CD, but seven of their duets are included here - three hits (We must have been out of our minds, Let's invite them over and What's in our hearts) plus Please be my love, Multiply the heartaches and two tracks from their Bluegrass Hootenanny album, Blue moon of Kentucky and Rollin' in my sweet baby's arms.
George recorded plenty of covers during this period too. You won't find many here, but they are represented by Running bear, Precious jewel, Peace in the valley, You win again, Lonesome whistle, Faded love and We could.
If you haven't got any of George's music, the best place to begin is Essential George Jones Spirit, a brilliant double CD devoted primarily to his 70's and 80's music, but which also includes the most famous songs from the 50's and 60's (in their original versions - Sony got the agreement of the other record labels involved). However, only three of the tracks here are included in that set (She thinks I still care, The race is on and We must have been out of our minds) so this is a great choice for a second collection.
Every George Jones fan should have this collection.
