The George Jones Collection

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Ain't that the way? MCA unceremoniously drops one of country music's legendary figures and then turns around and puts out a 12-song synopsis of his MCA tenure. Culled from his seven not-as-bad-as-you-might-think 1990s releases, this singles-heavy compilation wavers in terms of material quality and production values, but Possum's still Possum and his unique vocal abilities haven't yet abandoned him. When he gently caresses "You Couldn't Get the Picture," growls through "I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair," and sympathetically and sensitively renders Bobby Braddock's poignant "Wild Irish Rose," Jones's pained voice still has the power to move. Not the place to begin your Possum appreciation by any means, but worth getting to at some point. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Who dares trot out the contradictions between Jones's dissolute life and the sentiments of these songs when the man has always been such a True Believer of some sort? He calls this his musical response to the infamous 1999 car wreck that caused him to finally give up booze, caffeine, and tobacco. Circuit-preacher's son Billy Sherrill, who guided Jones's 1970s commercial ascension, came out of retirement to produce these 24 songs (on two discs) and, especially for a guy accused back then of gussying up country too much, he forges an austere sound. Jones's voice can't execute the many twists, turns, and tricks it once did, but it's still ripe with deep feeling; when he sings "I'm so tired and so weary," you don't doubt him. So forgive them both for trying too hard occasionally ("The Old Rugged Cross") and appreciate this for the old-school testimonial, musical and spiritual, that it is. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars George Sings Gospel Greats!.......2007-03-16

This double CD was a real blessing - George's familiar voice combined with some of my favourite old time hymns - was pure nostalgic bliss!

5 out of 5 stars Grandma's Favorite!.......2007-01-04

I purchased this album at the passing of my best friend, my Grandma. George Jones was her absoloute favorite, as well as old time gospel hymns that he signgs so beautifully on this album. We played this for my Grandma's services, and it was absoloutly perfect. It brought us all joy to know that Grandma would have loved it and the sound of George's voice made us feel like she was right there. Each song brought back memories of her and my childhood. This album was not only awesome, it was a blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Why me Lord? What have I ever done........2006-08-29

Who else should sing these songs than someone who is seeking redemption. I don't know where Mr. Jones is in his spiritual life, but he sings these wondeful hymns with conviction. The
2 disc collection will bring a tear to your eye and a glow
to your hear.

5 out of 5 stars Like a Good Whiskey....Better with Age.......2006-02-09

The urge to conpare the Possum to an old Whiskey is undeniable. He has, like a good bottle of Whiskey, aged wonderfully. The control that time has stolen from george Jone's vocal abilities, has been replaced with character. That's saying a lot for a man whose voice already had more character than pretty much any other country singer out there. These songs are done so nicely. His voice is sincere and strong, and you can feel his faith as he sings. My personal favorites are IF I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again, I'll Fly Away, Just a Little Talk With Jesus and When Mama Sang. I absolutely love this collection. I'm not an overtly religous person, and tend to keep my spirituality to myself, but found myself playing this set in my truck for several weeks straight...and doing so loudy. I made sure my mother had a set too, since she's the one who turned me on to Jones as a child some 37 years ago...one of the best things she ever did for me. If you like good old fashioned gospel songs...this will be a wonderful addition to your collection. If you're just a Possum fan...this will add some diversity to your collection. There's nothing like a sermon preached or a gospel song sung...by a reformed sinner. The relationship with the sin makes the sermon or singing that much better. This is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars All of the essential Mercury hits.......2005-03-30

Some years ago, Mercury released a double CD (Cup of loneliness) containing 48 tracks from George's recordings with Starday and Mercury up to 1961. For those who just want the essentials on a single CD, Mercury how now released this compilation, which includes nineteen of those 48 tracks plus three others - Money to burn, You're still on my mind and She thinks I still care (the latter track was a hit for George on the United Artists label).

Compared with the earlier compilation, there are some notable omissions including Accidentally on purpose, Seasons of my heart and Tall tall trees. I can understand the difficulty of getting everything that matters on to a single CD but I think these three songs could have been included. Even so, none of these songs are absolutely essential (those who disagree will buy Cup of loneliness instead).

Most of George's most famous songs came after he left Mercury but among the classic tracks here are Why baby why, I'm ragged but I'm right, Color of the blues, White lightning, Who shot Sam, Window up above and Tender years.

While this collection cannot be as comprehensive as Cup of loneliness, it achieves its purpose of providing all of George's important early hits on a single CD. Building a collection of George's music can be very expensive. For most people, this will be sufficient to represent the early years.

If you are into the 60's style, this is a great CD for you. It has so many unusual offerings that you never see on other CD's. There were some that I remembered vaguely, such as Trade Martin's "That Stranger Used to Be My Girl, but also many are new favorites for me. The price is rather high at this time, but it is a good addition for any 60's music collector.

Amazon.com essential recording

From the day he first recorded in 1954, George Jones seemed to care not so much about the quality of the songs, but reveled, like the rest of us, in the thrill of hearing his voice as it snaked from surreal honky-tonk yelps and dips, to novelty-number skips and romps, to the elongated vowels of his wringing ballads. The result is that Jones, for all his celebrated greatness, also recorded more than his share of junk. Of the repackaging of his early work, this Razor & Tie collection is among the best. But the big Starday and Mercury hits are nowhere to be found, as the two-disc, 40-song compilation covers his United Artists sides from 1962 to 1965 ("She Thinks I Still Care," "The Race Is On"), including six duets with Melba Montgomery ("We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds") that preceded his union with Tammy Wynette. Long underrated, these recordings capture Jones in his transition from stark honky-tonk to the florid emotionalism of his Epic years, developing his intensely personal style along the way. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars George's UA classics, 1962-1965.......2002-07-29

George recorded for several record labels. This 40-track collection covers his United Artists recordings, which are as good as any of them. His first UA hit (a number one) was She thinks I still care (later a hit for Anne Murray as He thinks I still care). The B-side (Sometimes you just can't win) also charted.

Plenty of hits followed, including Open pit mine, A girl I used to know (later a hit for Porter and Dolly as Just someone I used to know), Not what I had in mind, You comb her hair, Your heart turned left, Where does a little tear come from and The race is on (later a hit for Sawyer Brown). All these and other lesser hits from this period are included.

George's duet partner of the time, Melba Montgomery, is seriously under-represented on CD, but seven of their duets are included here - three hits (We must have been out of our minds, Let's invite them over and What's in our hearts) plus Please be my love, Multiply the heartaches and two tracks from their Bluegrass Hootenanny album, Blue moon of Kentucky and Rollin' in my sweet baby's arms.

George recorded plenty of covers during this period too. You won't find many here, but they are represented by Running bear, Precious jewel, Peace in the valley, You win again, Lonesome whistle, Faded love and We could.

If you haven't got any of George's music, the best place to begin is Essential George Jones Spirit, a brilliant double CD devoted primarily to his 70's and 80's music, but which also includes the most famous songs from the 50's and 60's (in their original versions - Sony got the agreement of the other record labels involved). However, only three of the tracks here are included in that set (She thinks I still care, The race is on and We must have been out of our minds) so this is a great choice for a second collection.

Every George Jones fan should have this collection.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite voice - exquisite interpretations.......2003-03-31

Della Jones is a wonder! What a joyful discovery is this collection of songs! Ms. Jones has a wonderful, expressive, luminous voice and her interpretations are full of grace, wit, personality and attention to detail. The songs are gems of beauty and personality. As you can see, I simply cannot say enough about the wonderful Ms. Jones and her talented, sensitive accompanist -I'm sorry - I don't have the CD with me right now, and the name of the wonderful pianist escapes me. Buy this CD. You will be thrilled.
