Though it includes no Merle Haggard hits and no Buck Owens at all, this compilation documents Bakersfield's bare-bones, honky-tonk sound--crackling guitars and steels, busy fiddles, high harmonies--that thrived for roughly two decades beginning in the early '50s, and was eventually considered a serious threat to Nashville. Artists range from the off-the-wall Tommy Collins to the deeply soulful Rose Maddox. Other highlights include the bluegrass-inflected "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud, Loud Music)" from Joe Maphis and Rose Lee; the lovely, devotional "Waltz of the Angels" by Wynn Stewart; the hillbilly boogie of the Farmer Boys' "Humdinger"; and the hard truckin' of Red Simpson's "Highway Patrol." Nearly everything has a little swing and a lot of drive. Dwight Yoakam helped refocus attention on this renegade brand of country, but there's no better introduction than this compilation. --John Morthland

Good jazz SACD sampler.......2005-06-06
Sound is good and well separated on the analogue 6 channel output designed for playing such a disc. But the music taste of the disc producer is strictly a jazz taste which doesn't meet that of a lot of music listeners. Beija-Flor, Come with me and Watermelon man are fantastic.
As a conclusion, it's a reliable SACD sampler but not comparable to DVDA which has almost the same sound fidelity, and include further videos, lyrics, photos and interviews.

Cole Porter's songs have a unique charm. Whether conveying the bantering, urbane wit of "I Get a Kick out of You" or the affecting depths of sentiment in "Every Time We Say Goodbye," his lyrics are matched to his melodies with a conversational ease. No matter how hard Porter might have worked at those effects, his efforts are invisible. That seeming nonchalance is conveyed magnificently here by a complement of wonderful singers, including Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, and Shirley Horn. Drawn largely from Verve's immense store of 1950s and 1960s recordings, the CD presents some ideal matches of singer and song, from the rhythmic vitality of Louis Armstrong's "Let's Do It" to the glorious depths of Billy Eckstine's "In the Still of the Night." --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick MitchellCustomer Reviews:

This 1959 recording brings together two fine musicians from worlds that one might not usually connect. Gerry Mulligan's light and airy baritone saxophone represents the "cool," and Ben Webster's burred and blustery tenor is the epitome of a very "warm" swing. When this was recorded, however, the quintet was actually a working band. Mulligan had a profound appreciation of Webster's talent, and the two shared an affection for the music of Duke Ellington and his composing partner, Billy Strayhorn, both of whom are represented here. With pianist Jimmy Rowles, an accompanist of legendary subtlety, and the sparkling rhythm team of bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Mel Lewis, this is wonderful small-group jazz, literally beyond classification. There's something unique in the ensemble sound of the two horns, with all the gravity concentrated in the higher tenor, but this is very much a blowing session, with Webster at his lyrical, passionate best. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:

4 1/2 The Parts Better Than the Whole.......2006-12-10
Having said that, it's still a very enjoyable CD, especially on "In A Mellowtone," "Sunday," the loose, jokey 'Shoes' number, and their MJQ chamber music-like take on "Chelsea Bridge." The latter song may indeed be worth the price of the CD, but this composition probably makes any CD worth its price. That's more a testament to the song, one of the greatest in the jazz library, and only those with minimal competence could ruin it. There's a little too much blues on the CD as well. I love blues, but when played on a jazz CD it can get tedious after awhile.
All the musicians are in great form, and it's exciting to listen to this meeting of two of very best jazz musicians, but I think their solo work tops this collaboration. Ben Webster is always wonderful; you might want to start with "Big Ben." I've just discovered Mulligan (I have no idea why it took me so long), but I feel his two live concerts in Paris are more exciting and creative. After listening to Webster and Mulligan separately, you'll have heard each at his best, then give this CD a try
as a generally very satisfying experiment.

Best of Swing Meets Best of Cool.......2006-01-22
This is one collaboration where the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts. By combining Webster's warm swing with Mulligan's cool West Coast style, these two great players produced a work of unique artistry.

If you have the music, he has the words .......2006-06-06
This collection does not include them all but contains enough to show why he is considered one of the greatest lyricists popular American song ever produced.
One oddity with Mercer is that many of his greatest hits came from melodies, music which had been pre- produced and which he was asked to write the words for. So for instance the beautiful haunting 'Autumn Leaves' was given lyrics after it had come to America from France.
Mercer is also the only lyric writer to have been honored by an 'Ella Fitzergald Songbook' collection.

En Vogue WERE Born To Sing!.......2005-04-03
En Vogue has a style that is sexy, brash and classy, not to mention their stellar vocal stylings which all four women mesh well together and never sound boring or competing. The women of En Vogue (Dawn, Cindy, Terri and Maxine) take turns sharing the spotlight on their 1990 debut and they all can hold their own.
With a little help from Club Noveau (spell?-they brought you the remake of the Bill Withers classic "Lean On Me" and were once called the Timex Social Club which had a hit called "Rumors") members Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, En Vogue captures the esscense of early 90's New Jack with their debut.
The hits were the street funky "Hold On" which features a nice little intro of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You" but seems out of place with the song itself. "Lies" was next with it's hip-hop New Jack piano and a female rapper named Debbie T. Then the harmonious "You Don't Have To Worry" and the drum machine drenched "Don't Go" summed up the biggest hits off the album and also the best songs off the album. The other tracks hold up well against the hits, such as the quirky and sharp "Strange" and the small interlude of the Andrews Sisters classic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which had a hip-hop flair to it and that I wished was longer. "Luv Lines" is another notable which features some great keyboard work and showcases some demanding singing from Dawn. And the bonus track "Waitin' On You" features some sultry vocals from Cindy and a wonderful sax by late great sax player Grover Washington Jr. and the glorious remake of "Just Can't Stay Away" holds well with the original. Still there are some duds like the eerie "Part Of Me" which isn't great at times and it can be sleep enducing but still En Vogue take turns at singing lead on this one and I give them props for that. Also "Time Goes On" is verry annoying after a couple of listens especially with the repetative "Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock" it practically drove me insane at first listen!
With some funny interludes ("Party" features the girls at a party being approached by some stupid guys, it's verry funny and it reminds me of some of the guys that approach me at parties-you do want to say "NOOO!"), harmonous vocals, toe-tapping music and a sense of style and class from these ladies you will fully enjoy "Born To Sing" if you buy it. I'm now planning on purchasing "Funky Divas" and more En Vogue albums (though sadly Dawn left and the group it was never the same). A very good solid debut that makes you want to stand up and applaud!

Where it all began.....pretty good!!.......2004-12-14
En Vogue was spawned by a couple of memebers from Culture Club, Denny Foster and Thomas McElroy. Who would've known what a group EV would turn out to be? En Vogue is the group that most artists then and now modeled themselves after and list as inspirations.
You can't go wrong with soulful voices that all fit the bill of being a true soloist. The voices blended together create harmony that is almost unheard of these days. Even in the faster songs you hear the harmony that we all loved. "Hold On" is the most recognized song that shot EV to super-stardom. It starts with a lovely and well-known acappella version of "Who's Lovin' You" from Jackson 5. Terry leads and the girls back her up well, and then Cindy throws down on the rest of the leads. Cindy also leads on the classic "You Don't Have To Worry", another hit for the girls. All of the girls share leads on the tight New Jack Swing song "Lies", which also has a cameo from a relatively unknown Debbie T (those of you with ears to the underground know her, mainstream America doesn't). The song flows effervescently. Also worth mentioning is the song "Luv Lines", in which Dawn belts out with the soul we all love.
If anything, a girl group must come hard with ballads or they will fall into obscurity; never the case with En Vogue. With such lovely-blended voices, how can you go wrong with ballads? Check out "Part of Me", my favorite song on the album. Each girls sings a lead and then harmonizes well, and the harmony soars throughout the song. This song isn't really a ballad as much as it is a socially themed song, but the girls reall shine on it. Definitely check out the song "Don't Go", in which Terry really shows off her vocal versatility. The girls throw down with this old-school type song. Speaking of old school, "Just Can't Stay Away" is one of the best remakes I have heard in a while. The girls' voices soar over Terry's leads, and this song is just a masterpiece!
We also are treated to a couple of interludes...one, a funny one in the beginning of the album, "Party" is just too much for me! lol. Also, at the end of "Strange", you get a funny interlude with Terry and Cindy talking about people. Also, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is an updated version of the classic Andrews Sister song...just listen to Terry say "uh uh, not that version" and you will laugh like crazy. En Vogue is definitely known for their crazy interludes.
The one song I didn't care for on here was "Time Goes On". I just couldn't get into it, because it really grated on my nerves after trying to like it.
En Vogue epitomizes harmony in every sense of the word. When you think of En Vogue, you think, "man, them girls can sing!". What a perfect title for this album. A definite R&B collector's item!!

The title Jazz After Dark II references late night seduction as conjured up in the slow, but purposeful, pace of ballads. The set's two discs are smartly divided into instrumentals and vocals. The thematic focus aligns a broad range of players from Chet Baker to Ella Fitzgerald. There are the classicists (Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington) and the modernists (Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk), with small combos and duets being the setting for them all. The vocal disc covers the greater span of years, with performances by contemporary singers (including Curtis Stigers, Karrin Allyson, and Peter Cincotti) alongside vintage tracks by some of their mentors and influences. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:

Assembled by producers and kneecapped by the departure of their most distinctive singer, Dawn Robinson, En Vogue remains the definitive diva-soul harmony group of the '90s, less on the strength of their meringuey harmonies than on their extraordinary material. This collection, cannily sequenced to hide later, lesser tracks between the hits, skims the cream from their three albums and EP, throws in 1998's "No Fool No More" single, and generally opts for album versions rather than EV's spiffy single remixes. It reveals an act that went from pleasant Soul II Soul-ish fluff to real soul power when it dedicated itself to updating R&B and funk traditions: quoting Funkadelic (and later paraphrasing their "Knee Deep" as "Let It Flow"), harmonizing over a stuttering James Brown riff, and getting their slow jams by way of '60s deep-soul ballads. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:
The Best of En Vogue.......2007-01-09
Still waiting for a GOOD EV Greatest Hits disc........2006-12-23
Everything else can be found on their albums, and unfortunately the single versions were often preferrable--EVERY song here once had a different radio mix. There has NEVER been an En Vogue compilation with all the single versions, and it's irritating. I keep hoping they'll release one eventually.
So you could buy this and get mostly album tracks that aren't necessarily what you remember off the radio; or you could buy their full-length albums and explore their other good "filler" tracks, like Yesterday, Hooked On Your Love, The Right Direction, and Fallin' In Love.
This set also lacks You Don't Have To Worry (one of the surprisingly few top 40 pop hits they had, I don't know why it's not here), Don't Go (a fairly major R&B-only hit), and Riddle (from the subsequent Masterpiece Theater album).
The ONLY advantage "The Very Best Of..." has over this is that the Very Best Of has liner notes with a fairly thorough group bio, chart positions, promo photos, and album references. This comp has pretty much nothing of interest in the liner notes. I don't honestly know who reads these besides me, though.
So, yeah. The Best of En Vogue is adequate, but not great, and the other compilations honestly aren't any better.
For the record, the single versions were as follows:
1) My Lovin': less one chorus and half the annoying "you bet!" bridge, although the heavily sampled Hyperadio remix was also popular
2) Hold On: additional instrumental bridge, different fade, sometimes without the a capella intro (for better or for worse)
3) Whatta Man: snappier remix, additional/CLEARER adlibs by En Vogue, earlier fade
4) Free Your Mind: chopped two choruses, and it honestly needs the edit. There were various R&B-oriented radio remixes, too.
5) Don't Let Go: shorter intro and fade, chopped some adlibs
6) No Fool No More: slightly more poppy remix
7) Whatever: minimal edit to intro
8) Giving Him Something He Can Feel: edits to the intro and spoken bridge
9) Lies: completely overhauled music, more danceable beat
10) Give It Up Turn It Loose: they got rid of that ANNOYING spoken intro
11) Runaway Love: earlier fade
12) Too Gone Too Long: earlier fade
If they could just put out a comp with the radio versions of 1-5, and 8-10, it'd be so much more worthwhile.
