Amazon.com
The myth of the American West--lawless lands, resolute heroes--takes on a grave, elegiac quality on this first, and best, collaboration from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. There's little bravado here, just a sense of ticking time, of frontiers lost, cowboys singing their last songs. In the end, Highwayman works because it fuses mythic, serious material with the artists' own legendary personas and well-aged voices. Lesser lights would be lucky to muddle through Jimmy Webb's epic title track; these four cagey desperados make every fantastic image believable. If Chips Moman surrounds them with less than subtle layers of guitars, keyboards, and drums, he does update vintage progressive country in a suitably cosmic but rugged fashion. Romantic legends and production values notwithstanding, it's the tough, wise singing here that's the real draw. --Roy Kasten

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great job for a country supergroup.......2007-07-18

I got this CD for "Highwayman" and also to hear the country equivalent of the Traveling Wilburys. "Highwayman" to me, is a much more finished production than the Wilburys ever produced which in itself is good and bad. You don't get the sense of the fun the Wilburys were having.

This CD is timeless in many ways. Songs not only talk about country legends (highwaymen and robbers) it deals with current issues (deportation and musicians doing time in rehab).

"Highwayman" is the best cover of Jimmy Webb's ballad I've ever heard; however, I believe Webb still did it best.

"The Last Cowboy Song" is a tribute to an era that thankfully, men like these have kept alive in story and song.

"Deportee Song" with its lyrics about illegal aliens, is a strong commentary on the continuing immigration issues.

"Committed to Parkside" details the very harsh reality of musicians who go over the edge on drugs, etc. It's grim, and I can probably only listen to it once.

The only song that I can honestly say was not worth it was their cover of "Against the Wind." For an old-line Seger fan, this particular style of rendition just didn't work.

Every single song is good and compelling. It's a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection, particularly at this price.

3 out of 5 stars Good Start.......2007-06-02

I bought this because I was missing "The Highwayman" song from my collection.

If I had to rate the three "Highwaymen" albums this would be #3. The second would be first and the third second.

I am a big fan of all the artists that is why I rated this three stars.

I like it....sorry a few have passed on...think the music says alot if you live the lifestyle...

5 out of 5 stars Modern-Day Classic.......2007-01-22

Like the protagonist in the title song, this music is timeless, and not confined by the standard genres and labels.

4 icons of late 20th century American music who did things their way, and who embraced the outlaw mindframe to the benefit of their listeners, got together to create one for the ages.

The Last Cowboy Song is my favorite track. The music is evocative of days gone by, music that you might hear in an old western movie. Another piece of America lost, indeed.

3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-01-18

I put this on my wishlist after seeing video clips of some of the numbers, from the tour. This is sterile compared to the tour where you could feel the love, the interplay, the response to the audience. This is well done, but I prefer the live performance, remember, the songs are written for performance in front of an audience.

5 out of 5 stars a gem.......2004-09-28

This is a great disc from the first track 'til the last. It's got just the right mix of great production BIG sounding tunes (which fit the mythic status of the performers and the subjects of some of the songs) and 'raw' and 'smaller' more personal songs (which allow the singers to shine). Some think that makes this one sound rushed. I don't agree. It's a great way to make an album with these four artists and it's a gem.

4 out of 5 stars Great Recording/Very Overlooked.......2004-05-06

When this cd came out, all the critics wrote it off saying, "It seems very rushed." Well I can kind of agree with that assumption. A few songs here sound like they were basically chosen out of pure desparation.

But on the other hand, this cd features some of the best, if not the best vocals Waylon Jennings has ever put on record. Johnny Cash does one of the best performances of his post Columbia Records days on "Anthem '84 and Living Legend." There is the towering Peformance on "Born And Raised in Black and White" that should have gotten them the "Vocal Event" award at the 1991 CMA awards (and was played as their nomination was announced).

This is a very solid release, although a bit rushed. But only these men could rush and make something so good. These men at their worst are 100 times better than most "artists" at their best.

4 out of 5 stars Four great singers equals one heck of a CD........1998-06-18

It's amazing how each song highlights each one of the foursome's strong points. This CD really made me stand up and listen. The CD opens with "Silver Stallion" and one cannot help but think of bygone cowboy days. Waylon Jennings transforms "Angels Love Bad Men" into one of his trademark wicked songs. Reminds you of the "Waylon and Willie days" when everybody wanted to be an outlaw. This album would get five stars if it had included their version of "Help Me Make it Through the Night" (a danceable form of the famous Kristoferson tune). And, it's nice to know that Johnny Cash sounds as good as ever.

Album Description

LIVE -- HIGHWAYMAN, the long-awaited live album his fans have been demanding for years. The CD is overflowing with over 77 minutes of music, making this the longest single release in Alligator's catalog. Ellis recorded two nights of performances at Chord On Blues in St. Charles, IL, a suburb of Chicago, on March 25 and 26, 2005. The CD is an Ellis fan's dream-come-true, because as great as he is in the studio, it's the stage where Ellis really fires it up. At the recording, he burned hotter than ever, taking his band and his audience to spine-chilling heights. Ellis' original songs, extended soloing and heartfelt singing brought his audience to its feet early and kept them shouting and dancing all night long.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Live Highwayman.......2006-05-29

This CD seems to be left in my CD player and played over and over. It is just a fantabulous disc. I've been to Chord on Blues in St. Charles, IL where this was recorded but have yet to catch Tinsley there. For a guy from Atlanta he gets there often and I intend to see him there on one of his next visits. It is one solid CD, get one for the house and one for the car.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Wait.......2006-04-26

We've been hoping for a Tinsley live album for a long time now. His only other is the wonderful mid-80's Live At The Moonshadow, as leader of his ass kicking quartet, The Heartfixers. But Live! Highwayman is surely definitive and well worth the wait. The band is in top form, and Tinsley's energy, creativity and musical prowess are at an all time high!

2 out of 5 stars keeps getting worse.......2006-04-13

i was once a big tinsley ellis fan enjoying such albums as fanning the flames and trouble in mind. but what was once a fresh sound and fresh guitar has become increasingly stale. having seen tinsley live three times he sure left all his good stuff at home on this album, he even manages to screw up highway man which is one of my favorites. i know tinsley has felt he hasnt gotten his just due as a performer but efforts like this won't help his cause.

5 out of 5 stars Just Blown Away.......2006-03-30

I have all of Tinsley Ellis's CD's but this will now rank as my favorite. Can't stop playing it. I was completely blown away by the live version of Pawnbroker. I replayed it three times in a row. My only wish is that the concert had been recorded on DVD as well so that I could enjoy seeing it as well as listening to it.

3 out of 5 stars Move Along People, Nothing New Here.......2006-01-14

First let me say that this is not a bad CD. Solid guitar licks with fairly typical vocals. This was my first into to Tinsley Ellis, and while it was a good performance, it certainly doesn't stand out from a hundred other electric blues discs (hence the 3 star rating). You want some guitar based electric blues that make a real impression, check out something like Son Seals' "Live and Burning".

4 out of 5 stars Back in the saddle.......2001-07-09

When a star quartet of this magnitude is formed the sky is the limit.

For some, this second album from the foursome of Jennings, Nelson, Cash and Kristofferson will be another taste of country and western heaven.

The single "Silver Stallion" is very much in the mould of "The Highwayman". The four giants take turns at the microphone, and at the writing, as they journey through the songs about the good, the bad and the ugly sides of the American Wild West.

Any good country album turns its attention to the subject of love and this is no exception.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, "Born And Raised In Black And White" pits traditional biblical morals against the well-meaning but rugged values considered more practical for a time when a man had to do what a man had to do.

            An enjoyable sequel.
