5 out of 5 stars early Priest at its best........2007-06-19

This is my favorite 70s Priest album, and for good reason. Hell Bent For Leather takes the heavyness of earlier albums and speeds it up. Cross "Sinner" with "Exciter," and that's kind of what you've got. "Delivering The Goods" is a kick-@ss opener and one of my five favorite Priest songs. It's an overlooked classic. The variety between the tracks while still maintaining a constant aggressive attitude is amazing. "Evening Star" is a bit more commercial, but still kicks along. Then, of course, there's the title track and "The Green Manalishi," both of which are very good as well. "Before The Dawn" is a beautiful ballad sort of thing that feels just a bit out of place, but the musicianship and emotion more than makes up for that. Essential Priest.

5 out of 5 stars Priest...Priest..Priest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-24

A great album of course. Just received my cd version and it rocks!!!! Knew many of the tunes already."Delivering The Goods","Hell Bent For Leather","Take On The World","The Green Manalishi"(cover of The Mac),"Killing Machine" and "Before The Dawn" are the standouts.get it if you love Priest and re-visit the oldies. They are well worth it.
Look out for "Nostradamus" in the middle of the year or so.
Long live Priest and HALFORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A headbanging classic........2007-03-20

Hell Bent was my first Judas Preist album and it was quite good, to me it seems like Judas were one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, they basicly reinvented speed metal and thrash. Every one from Iron Maiden to Metallica have been influenced by this group anyway Hellbent for leather was released in 1979 right after Stained Class it was a strong album but not as good as the previous one an album that sounded a bit darker and heavier. Hell Bent was aiming for a heavy metal and rock'n'roll type of sound and was more about staying up all night and partying which is great cause I like those things I mean who doesn't, there are alot of great tracks in this that make you want to headbang like Delivering the goods, Burning up, Green manalishi and Hellbent for leather and if you want the more slower but still excellent songs like the ballad Before the dawn and Evening star which has more of a commercial sound to it but its still very catchy, the song Take on the world is the only song I didn't like cause of its sing-a-long chorus line that sounds like a rip of from Queen's We will rock you. As time progressed throughout the 80's Judas Priest were one of the biggest heavy metal bands of all time, if you're looking for a fast, aggresive and brutally intense album then check this out the two guitar attack of Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing is characteristically blistering and they often come up with the most amazing solos and not to mention Rob Halford with his great high pitched voice and signature scream makes for a great combination, make sure that you get this album if your interested in Judas Priest becaues its very essential and make sure that you also get these other great releases from JP like Stained Class, British Steel, Screaming For Vengeance and Angel Of Retribution alot of people didn't like Turbo but I thought it was pretty good even though during that time they did sound like a cheesy 80's hair metal group it was still a fun album to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Priest fans.......2007-02-17

What can I say? Classic Priest with all the hard-driving sound you would expect. Besides the several top 40 hits you're familiar with, it's got some underplayed gems that I can't live without. (Burnin'Up, Killing Machine....) This was a -rebuy for me, since I've worn out a copy on vinyl and one on cassette tape. Have to have this in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars A very small step back, but undeniably good........2006-07-12

How could Judas Priest follow "Stained Class"? Either by cloning it, or by doing something different. They did the latter, with slightly-mixed results, though "Hell Bent..." is still a worthy disc. However, one thing I've never figured out is why the U.S. record company made them change the title...I did see a "Killing Machine" LP in Canada years ago...should have got it for the collectible aspect alone...

This is more experimental than "Stained Class" was in that they tried a few more commercial songs. Sometimes it was good ("Evening Star" is very catchy whilst still remaining heavy) and sometimes less so ("Before The Dawn" just isn't Priest, despite an operatic vocal from "Robert" Halford).

Overall, though, if you get this, you'll get standard Priest fist-pumpers like "Delivering The Goods", "Rock Forever", "Burnin' Up" and "Take On The World" (which they would virtually clone a few years later with "United" from "British Steel"). The Tipton/Downing guitar work is fine, Halford sings well, Les Binks is probably the best drummer they ever had (though Scott Travis comes close) and Ian Hill is solid if almost inaudible. The production from James Guthrie is clear but still allows the heaviness to come through.

I do have to say, though, that the outtakes added do not fit at all. The live "Riding On The Wind" shows them at a much later stage in their career, as does "Fight For Your Life", which is of course an embryonic version of "Rock Hard Ride Free" from "Defenders Of The Faith".

But still overall an essential part of the Priest canon.

5 out of 5 stars Great Frankie Laine arrangements.......2007-03-31

Rockin' contains some great singing by Frankie Laine backed up by a wonderful Los Angeles studio orchestra (Conrad Gozza, et. al) led by Paul Weston. The arrangements are spectacular! I recognize some Billy May charts - Weston , probably, did the string arrangements. GREAT STUFF here.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Frankie Laine.......2007-03-11

I was delighted to find this CD available on amazon.com as the quality of music these days has suffered so much as the level of talent is so often compromised to make a commercial disc.
The quality of this disc is outstanding musically as well as vocally !
I did enjoy the "Hell Bent For Leather" portion more than "the Rockin'" segment. I liked the old cowboy themes for what they are and the fact that they are definitive.
If you like classic cowboy music and good old vocals then get this disc !!

4 out of 5 stars the way they should sound.......2007-03-09

I'm not too fond of the Rockin half. I've only heard of a couple of the songs, I love the "Hell Bent for Leather" part. The songs are from my childhood. Frankie Laine has a great voice so I do like to hear him sing.
My Mom sang along with him, so this is a good memory.
I've heard songs from the second half on other records and they just don't sound the same as the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin'/ Hell Bent For Leather.......2006-02-21

Frankie Laine at his best!! Perfect for anyone who loves the "old" music!

5 out of 5 stars Another great performer who's defined by what he isn't.......2005-10-09

Mention Frankie Laine and most people think of somebody who appeared on TV too much, and especially as some clueless sap who recorded the title tune for the vulgar movie sitcom "Blazing Saddles," and that's that. That's not that. Laine was a powerhouse, and if his emoting may not appeal to all listeners, we cannot deny his magnetism. A man who co-wrote the outstanding "We'll Be Together Again" deserves his plaudits.

Inevitably some double albums mesh the unmeshable, and while this entire disc is quite entertaining, the first album is the better. Where "Hell Bent for Leather!" is Laine in his "yeeeeee-HAH!" mode (another reason the stereotype sticks too rigidly to him), slickly and conventionally led by Johnny Williams (before he became Erich Wolfgang Korngold -- er, John Williams), "Rockin'" is a first-rate jazz album, and proves that with the right song and the right backing no one could surpass him. You have to wonder why Laine hasn't gotten his due. Is it the Mitch Miller angle? The fact that he recorded "I Believe"? Whatever, it's unjust, and anyone who brings two open ears to this recording will discover a supreme entertainer.

There ain't much to talk about if you'll talk about Hank. His sound is unique and matchless, and this album is one of his diamonds.Listening to this album I can almost see myself in a trashy bar sippin' from my glass of Old Jack. Yeeeowww!! Pure and outlaw country! just the way it should always be.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!.......2004-06-10

This is where Hank really starts coming true to form as we know him today! Family tradition was a good album but this one is great! Filled with great hits, any Hank fan will truly appreciate this album which includes Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, O.D.'d in Denver, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Hank from 1979.......2004-03-31

While Kenny Rogers (of whom I am also a huge fan) was dominating the commercial aspect of country music with songs such as The Gambler and She believes in me, Hank was doing things his way, just as he always has done since he left MGM, with his unique blend of country, rock and blues. Of course, plenty of others have blended these three, including Elvis in the fifties, but Hank's blend is very much his own.

On this album, the my favorite tracks (but not by much) are the title track, Women I've never had and a brilliant duet with Waylon Jennings, The conversation, about Hank's father. There's also a great revival of White lightning, which was written by the Big Bopper but provided George Jones with a top ten American pop hit. Hank's cover is very different from George's but I love them both. Hank also does an excellent cover of Gregg Allman's Come and go blues.

Considering that Hank never did things the Nashville way, it is perhaps surprising that he had as much success as he did - but the quality of his albums, including this one, ensure that he deserved all the success that he had.

You can tell what you're gonna get from the cover art on the CD. This is without a doubt hell-bent-insurgent country. I hadn't heard of most of the groups on the CD, and I'm glad I got this chance to explore some new bands from the good ole midwest. If you haven't heard of these bands, don't worry about it, Bloodshot Records will hook you up with some rockin country twang.

5 out of 5 stars scrappy, packed with toe-tappin' tunes.......2004-09-06

This 1995 compilation was an early sign of the greatness of the Bloodshot Militant Honky-Tonk Faction of alt.country. If you liked the 5-year anniversary comp, DOWN TO THE PROMISED LAND, then you're bound to like this one just as much. There are 17 cuts, by the Waco Brothers, Robbie Fulks, Richard Buckner, the Bottle Rockets, and the Old 97's, to mention some of the better known artists. The following songs are all absolutely brilliant, and deserved to be blasting out of radios everywhere back in '95:

"Get Down" -- The Bottle Rockets

"Roulette Wheel" -- Moonshine Willy

"One I Love" -- The Volebeats

"Espoontoon" -- Eleanor Roosevelt

"Tennessee Hi-Way Blues" -- Gwil Owen

"Por Favor" -- the Old 97's

"Walking On My Grave" -- The Cartwrights

"Yellow Birds" -- Tarnation

"Don't Die While I'm Alive" -- The Inbreds

"Mud Flap Boogie" -- World Famous Bluejays

I have seldom heard a record so full of energy -- it never fails to make me want to jump up and down and bounce off the walls. Jon Langford's cover painting of "Hank Shot Through With Arrows" is a great bonus. We're coming up on the 10th year anniversary for Bloodshot, and if they can equal this disc and the 5th year compilation, it'll be a happy miracle!

2 out of 5 stars Judas Priest Hell Bent For Metal.......2000-02-26

This CD isn't great. There's too much death metal, where the singing is just brutal. There are a few good songs: Sentinel, Beyond the Realms of Death, Seeler, and Desert Plains. Some other songs, were simply an embarrassment. The vocalist's attempt to hit the high note in "The Ripper," is nothing more than ridiculous. The guitar solo in the beginning of "Metal Meltdown" was omitted. The worst song, is probably "Electric Eye," performed by "Scary German Guy." Not only was the "Hellion" left out, but the singing sucked, and the guitar solo was HORRIBLY butchered. I would only recommend this CD if you're a die hard priest fan who doesn't mind bad vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Judas Priest - Hell Bent For Leather:...Judas Priest.......2000-02-07

Something Like The 1970's Were 1978's HELL BENT FOR LEATHER & STAIND CLASS and inside the 1980's Were 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGENANCE Was No Real in 1986's TURBO and the 1987 PRIEST...LIVE! and 1989's RAM IT DOWN and PAINKILLER in 1990.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a tribute cd.......1999-07-30

I have to say, I enjoyed this cd. The only problem-way too much boring death metal. At least some bands (like Scary German Guy) were willing to mix it up a little bit and show some originality.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Legends of Metal CD's, but pretty cool..........1999-07-14

Like most tribute albums, a mix of decent, great, and lousy. Low points...Sanctorum, Scary German Guy, and Aurora Borealis. High points...Angel Corpse's great death metal version of "Eat Me Alive," Winter's Bane's version of "Steeler," Steel Prophet's take on "Dreamer Deceiver," and especially Vital Remains' tuned down but otherwise just about note-perfect version of "You've Got Another Thing Comin'"

Recommended if you're a Priest fan and also happen to like death metal.

While the title of this 1979 release perfectly fits the band's increasing S&M-inspired leather-and-chains imagery, it's a mature and fairly sharp thematic departure from its largely death-obsessed predecessor, Stained Class. While the Priest could have easily fallen into the same stultifying goth clichés as forebears like Black Sabbath, they expanded both their musical range and lyrical focus here, shrewdly burnishing the album's commercial potential in the bargain. Kicking off with the upbeat "Delivering the Goods" and the Skynyrd-worthy arena boogie of "Rock Forever," the band blasts through material that's as wide as Sin After Sin's, but better focused. There are expected metal clichés--a big rock ballad ("Before the Dawn") and some expected bad-ass posturing (the title track and "Killing Machine")--but even the band's occasional bowing to gothic expectations is informed with a sense of surprise and adventure, as witnessed by their cover of the disturbing Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac track "The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Horn)." That much of this album's tack became inspiration--and then cliché--for the widespread metal revolution that Judas Priest helped foster is only testament to their enduring legacy. This digitally remastered edition features expanded artwork, new commentary by the band, and complete lyrics, as well as the bonus tracks "Fight for You Life" (a studio outtake later incorporated into "Rock Hard, Ride Free") and a manic live version "Riding on the Wind." --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Judas Priest - Hell Bent for Leather (1979).......2004-06-04

Rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 5 = very good

The year was 1979; I was at Big Apple Records looking for new additions for my record collection when I ran across "Hell Bent for Leather." The front cover of the album pictured a white Zombie like face wearing a black studded leather helmet with blood covered shattered sun glasses, looking like some neo Nazi biker from hell; WOW, I had to have it! I hurriedly went home & played the record. I was immediately blown away by the sounds & power contained on the vinyl grooves, I loved it!

"Hell Bent for Leather" led me into the rest of the 70's Priest albums, "Rocka Rolla," "Sad Wings of Destiny," "Sin After Sin," Stained Glass," & "Unleashed in the East," though with the exception (maybe) of "Unleashed in the East," "Hell Bent for Leather" was my favorite Priest album. I literally wore the groves out of the record. So you might be thinking why did I give "Hell Bent" 3 1/2 stars then? Well if you asked me back then I'd of been shocked myself, surely this album deserves a 5 star masterpiece rating, right? Well? As fast as I was enthralled with Priest, within two years I tired of them. Their music just didn't hold up in the long run. I found it repetitive; many riffs recycled from better previous acts. Their music was just too lumbering, it was not sophisticated & exotic enough, but there are songs on this album that still grab my attention "Killing Machine" with it's message of cold & ominous killer riff, also "Burning Up" (being 18 back then I didn't know Rob was gay, LOL!) a testimonial of sexual heat. The truly beautiful ballads, "Evening Star," "Before the Dawn" & the killer title cut "Hell Bent for Leather." These songs still rock my roll, but the ludicrously banal pep song for metal misfits (Yes, I was one, still am) "Take on the World" turned my gut even back then, more so now. As for the rest, they just don?t move me one way or another anymore, but it did for that 18 year old I once was.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME...........2001-11-15

OK....seriously, I bought this album back in '90 and it really rocked me big time. "Green manalishi", "Delivering the Goods", "Burnin' Up", "Killing Machine" and "Evil Fantasies" - YES!!! I love this song - very groovy !! I love the "thick" "creamy" sound The Police would rip off for their tune "Every Breath You Take" a few years later. Only one blemish from this album: "Before the dawn" - what a corny, contrived, wimpy, out-of-it style !!!! I must admit when I heard: "before the dawn, I hear you whisper in your sleep: "don't let the morning take him"" - Christ! I really thought Rob was talking about some guy sleeping in bed with him!!!!! Hahahahaha!!! Turned out I was right!!!! hihihhihhi!!!

4 out of 5 stars JUDAS !!!!! JUDAS !!!! JUDAS !!!!.......2001-08-10

THe good old days... THis album is classic, as all albuns up until SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE are. After that, the decline began (even if DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH has some good tracks here. Les Binks is the drummer here, don't know why he left. Dave Holland was good, but not in the same category. Anyway, the title track is a killer, everything shines here. BEFORE The DAWN is also great, different. A lesson in metal.

4 out of 5 stars IT MAKES NO SENSE ..........2001-08-04

I agree with some reviewers that say this album is a little bit weaker than STAINED CLASS. But you forgot one point: everything Priest released before they sold out in the middle eighties achieved classic status, including "HELL BENT FOR LETAHER".

5 out of 5 stars Brutal Metal, Classic Priest..........2000-12-22

Wow. If you listen to this album loudly enough you'll end up picking your friend up by the ankles and pile-driving him into the floor. It's that powerful. Tracks like Delivering The Goods, Hell Bent For Leather and Green Manalishi were designed to destroy furniture to. The energy is incredible. Evening Star offers a sense of optimism to temper the power of the other tracks. The whole album is terrific, even when it slows down for Before The Dawn. Worship at the alter of the Priest.

5 out of 5 stars Hell bent for metal.......2002-01-08

great cd. all dwell tribute cds rule now the review...

    1. Cage - Freewheel Burning. Great way to open an awesome metal cd

    2. Burning Inside - Green Manalishi. My favorite! its really well done and the vocals are still understandable to those non death metal listeners.

    3. Speeed - Grinder. Awesome, classic song done perfectly

    4. Defekt - Rapid Fire. pretty good, the only thing close to filler on this although there is none.

    5. Tyrant - Tyrant. Really good, i like how a good band did the same song title at there name.

    6. Acheron - Devil's Child. What a good song for the satanic leaders to cover

    7. Seven Witches - Diamonds and Rust. At first the band sounded like something black metal, so i thought it would be interesting to see black metal cover this diamonds and rust. yet, its not... but its all good

    8. Blood Coven - Screaming for Vengeance - Probaly my 2nd best fav on ths cd, great work

    9. Killswitch - Exciter. Captured mr.halfords vocals perfectly

    10. Debauchery - Riding on the wind. SOOOO good! i love it. its a jam that will get to jumpin around

    11. Dissaray - Delivering the Goods. Good!

    12. Engrave - Sinner. Awesome song, im glad Engrave kept up and pulled out a 7 minute cover

overall bad arse cd, get it now for the sake of your ears.

    4 out of 5 stars Hell Bent.......2000-07-31

All in all this is a pretty decent tribute album.None of the bands did a really awesome cover of Judas Priest, but they are still worth hearing.I liked Burning Inside's cover of 'Green Manalishi' and also Speeed's(who doesnt live up to there name)cover of the classic 'Grinder'.Metals fans,if your curious to what this sounds like its a mixture of Death and Power metals bands. So if your a fan of either genre then go buy this puppy.

5 out of 5 stars "Sons of Liberty" gets a brother..........2004-09-25

Can you imagine my joy at finally managing to purchase this CD? Maybe.

This CD, like its younger brother, is one of the finest albums that you will ever purchase. A lot more original tunes in this one, but you could hardly tell the difference between traditional and original. That's the beauty of Amadan.

    5 out of 5 stars All Fun.......2004-07-13

The younger brother to Sons of Liberty, Hell Bent 4 Victory is definitely the rebel in the family. With many original songs mixed in with more traditional tunes, HB4V is guaranteed to keep your feet tapping to the beat long after it's stopped playing. A little bit of Irish, a little bit of punk, and all fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-07-09

Excellent. A little faster and a little harder than Sons of Liberty, but still a welcome difference.
    Keep them coming boys!
