What a blast! Applying garage-band urgency to a selection of material that extends well beyond countrypolitan favorites, the freewheeling SCOTS demonstrate surprising range and ferocious chops. At the heart of this labor of love, as the album's title suggests, are crossover country favorites from an era when the music was a staple on Top 40 AM radio (where many fans first heard "Oh, Lonesome Me," "Wolverton Mountain," and "Rose Garden"). Yet the release shows an equal affinity for the rock of that era, as the band gives the Kinks' "Muswell Hillbillies" an arrangement that recalls the Sir Douglas Quintet, injects a guitar surge from "Gloria" into the (pre-Creedence) Golliwogs' "Fight Fire," savors the fuzztone dreaminess of T. Rex's "Life's a Gas," and transforms the Who's "Happy Jack" into a banjo-driven hoedown. In other highlights, the band puts pedal-to-the-metal overdrive into the psychedelic shimmer of the Byrds' "Have You Seen Her Face" and adds some pop bounce to the swamp blues of Slim Harpo's "Te Ni Ne Ni Nu." The result is an irresistible party platter. --Don McLeese

Fun.......2007-07-16
I recommended this disc on a Rolling Stones' Fan-Club site and someone remarked "that album scratches me right where I itch". I can't write a better review than that. This has a great, eclectic, choice of songs and strong lively performances. What more than fun do you want from your rock n roll?
Favorite party album band brews up another gem.......2007-07-06
I got my first CD player at the age of 15 in the glorious summer of 1985 - this is back when the CD player was the size of a small refrigerator and they hadn't even invented the "shuffle" option. CDs sold for over $20 and came in surfboard-sized plastic sheets that required the Jaws of Life to open. I look back on that old heap of slag and smile.
Not so my CD collection. I still have many of the CDs I bought in those years, and it is stunning how many CDs I bought that had one good song surrounded by dreck. I guess that's the problem of going to a high school where Ratt, Cinderalla, Poison and other big-hair bands were worshipped - there's only so much redemption that "Pyromania" and "1984" can provide.
Suffice it to say that as I've grown older, I've grown more temperate in my musical purchases - if the album isn't consistently good from start-to-finish, I won't buy it. Based on that criteria, I can offer little praise higher than to say that I've bought all of SCOTS' albums and have never regretted it - not a single "Invasion of Your Privacy" in the bunch.
That SCOTS would crank out a cover album doesn't surprise me - this is a band that is proud of its influences and has paid tribute to other songwriters and bands in previous albums - "Pass the Hatchet," anyone? This album features the unique SCOTS' take on a bunch of old timey stuff that comes out smelling like . . . well, not roses, but at the very least a big old mess of barbeque.
SCOTs defines the party album for me. There are few better guarantees for a fun get-together than to put a few of these albums in the player and let fly. And these are good for both lazy outdoor get togethers and late-night boot-stompers. These are quick, fun tunes played with style and belted out with sass - especially when Mary Huff gets her big old voice in gear.
If you haven't checked out SCOTS before, I can't tell you that "CF" is the perfect album to start with . . . I'd start with my favorite, "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down," but that's just me. Suffice it to say that this album won't steer you wrong, and may open up vast new possibilities as you reconsider a slighted musical genre.

Mary Huff Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-26
What a group of fine musicians and Mary Huff not only is a fantastic bass player, she looks great doing it. These covers are great, they are so versatile. I just saw them in Towson and they are better live. Viva Microfret!
"Something To Hollar About!".......2007-05-07
Sure,I've heard SCOTS do straight on covers, like "Merry Christmas Baby",I've even heard them do odd covers like The Swinging Medallions "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" & Slim Harpo's "Scratch My Back" in Espanol...but I must admit, these latest covers show the SCOTS still have a lot of tricks up their sleeves! Some of the choices have that honky-tonk appeal, that seems obvious for them to cover, like,"Oh Lonesome Me","Wolverton Mountain","Rose Garden" and "Engine Engine #9". But they add a little something to them that make them their own! "Wolverton Mountain" now has yodellers on it! Mary Huff's upbeat, slightly bouncier version of "Rose Garden" is a highlight!
Then there's the other stuff, among them: The Kinks "Muswell Hillbilly" gets the countrified kick it needs! T.Rex's "Life's A Gas" - my fave track on this album - is presented as an Acid-Rockabilly duet! Guitarist/Ring Leader Rick Miller can't do a covers album without some John Fogerty/CCR material, and SCOTS cover "Tombstone Shadow" and "Fight Fire" (Super cool version!).And just when you think it's all souped-up modern rockabilly, they take it down a notch and present The Who's "Happy Jack" as a sort of Country Bears Jamboree.
This is easily one of SCOTS smoothest and most listenable albums! ( Not that I don't love the ORIGINAL material. But a break every now and then is absolutely acceptable!)

Timeless Classic.......2007-05-14
"Living Stereo" was the name of RCA'S highest quality recordings. The three major labels, RCA, Columbia and Capitol all invested large amounts of money and effort to improve, indeed, perfect the new LP stereo recordings of the 1950's. This album presents a good example of RCA's labor and technology. Although some of these songs are generations old and recorded on rather primitive equipment, they still sound great. Thanks to digital technology, these precious gems sound better today than they did when they were first recorded almost 50 years ago. I bought the LP, then the cassette version so I could listen to it in my car as I traveled the Pacific Northwest selling records and tapes to retailers. You will enjoy listening to the harmony of this cowboy classic.
The last round-up.......2007-04-19
As a small child in the early 1960's, I was given an EP of four songs that were originally on the COOL WATER album (these were: "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "The Last Round-up" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky"). At the time, I didn't know who the Sons Of The Pioneers were and had never heard any of their music. Long story short-- I LOVED that record. So, many years later, when the opportunity presented itself, I gladly bought the LP.
This early stereo recording (1959) is a marvel. Traditional cowboy songs with a full (yet not intrusive) orchestra. Gorgeous harmonies, classic tunes and excellent sound. COOL WATER is a truly great album that all fans of traditional American music should own. Highest recommendation.
cool water music cd.......2007-01-09
the songs where sung by some of the oldest western singers in the 20th century, such as autry murphy and roy rogers.
the group was called the sons of the pioneers and if you consider that the wild west still was in the early `900's and tombstone still had stages and sherrifs you can see why.
if you truly like REAL country or western music, then sons of the pioneers is for you
Stands Alone In Time & Genres.......2007-01-09
First the history of this album for me, then my impressions of the CD.
As a kid, we'd leave my hometown of Tulsa and make the drive to my Great-Grandparents' home, in the little town of Holdenville, Oklahoma. While the adults hung up coats and fixed lunch and talked and talked and TALKED, I'd race to the back room.
The back room had tinkertoys, a handful of trinkets gathered from local eating establishments, but for me it mainly had a record player and a stack of records.
It didn't take me long to figure out that very little of my Great-Grandparents' music was going to appeal to me; however, among the stack, I found this album. I loved it immediately and played it every time we went to their house.
Years later I inherited that album, but by that time a bad needle had ruiend the recording and none of the digital "tricks" I had could resurrect it.
Fast-forward to today, and the CD arrives!
As you might imagine, I had high expectations for this CD. Not only does it meet my expectations, it completely exceeds it.
First, the songs are of course exactly as I remember. However, it's like a veil has been lifted between me and the performace... this isn't sound in a groove coming from a cone, they're performing in the room! I'd forgotten how irresistable it is to harmonize with them.
The dynamics are at least as wide as on the album, actually wider because there's no "overload" point where it turns to fuzz. Voices truly soar.
The recordings, while focused on the nartually-eq'd voices, are deep, rich, full, clear, crisp and fresh. This is a very well-balanced recording!
O.K, finally, this is a recording from analog tape form 1959... how's the hiss?
ABSENT.
No joke. I like to think I've got pretty sensitive ears, and I'm not hearing ANY tape noise even at loud volumes. Absolute worst noise is the slightest 60 cycle hum at the beginning or end of one or two tracks when one mic is open by itself. Frankly, I'm not convinced I'm hearing that! I don't know if the RCA producers were magicians with analog tape, or if the company that mastered this CD figured out how to take out the hiss without disturbing the rest of the music... but it is whisper-quiet. the CD label says "Advanced Noiseshaping Redither," and maybe that's the magic... whatever it is, WOW!
In very brief moments, to only the slightest degree, is there a hint of analog overload, but it NEVER distracts from the music and is only a surprise because you almost forget this isn't a full-digital recording!
If you have the SLIGHTEST interest in the Sons of The Pioneers, cowboy music, or simply want an excellent example of what the medium was / is capable of, please do yourself a favor and get this CD!
P.S. - An added bonus for me: ironically, my Great-Grandparent's copy was MONO. Obviously, these recordings were meant to be heard in stereo. If you listen to the files on this page, you'll hear some of the problems of listening in mono: phase issues, etc. Buy this, and listen through headphones for best effect.
P.P.S. - Dig that bass singer!!! :-)
Wonderful Western Songs By A Great Group.......2006-08-09
This CD has some great songs sung by The Sons of the Pioneers. Ridin Home, Way Out There and Riders in the Sky are outstanding. This is the group that carried on after Bob Nolan retired. The singer who sounds like Bob Nolan is Tommy Doss who does a great job on Riders in the Sky and others. I bought this album in 1959 when it was originally available, and am happy it is now on CD.

Album Description
This Amazon.com exclusive version of Marshmallow World & Other Holiday Favorites includes a live bonus track, "Blue Christmas."
Considered to be one of the finest singers in the world, Raul Malo has always crossed cultures and blurred musical boundaries, breaking new ground with his distinctive balance of vintage sound and contemporary attitude. Born in Miami of Cuban parents, Raul is best known as the founder and frontman of Grammy-winning, multi-platinum band the Mavericks. Formed in 1990, the Mavericks were one of the decade's biggest country bands, recording seven albums, including their 1994 breakthrough, What a Crying Shame, and twice being named Top Vocal Group by the Country Music Association.
This is Raul Malo's first solo Christmas album, which features Raul's beautiful and unique interpretations of beloved holiday tunes. Some songs are distinctly stylized, some traditional, others sung with a hint of humor, but all very nostalgic.

Statlers Take Gospel To Another Level.......2007-07-13
For someone who's musical tastes range from the neo-Cajun Pine Leaf Boys to hard rockers like Def Leppard and Motley Crue to edge-of-Country bands like The Mavericks and the Desert Rose Band, you'd probably think that a review of a Statler Brothers' album would seem out of place. However, I must admit that I have a very soft spot in my heart for these guys. Growing up in southwest Louisiana, my dad ruled the radio and was the primary music buyer in the family. I was treated to acts like Merle Haggard, Jimmy Swaggart, Fats Domino, and Marty Robbins. I also got a healthy dose of the Statlers who, other than Merle, were probably my dad's favorite artists. My first concert was a Statler Brothers show and I would eventually see them again in Dollywood a few years later. Their sound has stuck with me forever.
This particular album shows the Statlers at their finest: singing Gospel music. I'm not talking about modern Gospel sounds. Nope, I'm talking about Southern Gospel, complete with four-part harmony, string pickin' and plenty of "oomph" to get you on your feet. Contemporary Christian artists can't hold a candle to traditional Southern Gospel sounds. From the wonderful "Just A Little Talk With Jesus" to the upbeat gem that is "I'll Fly Away," this album is wonderful. My personal favorite tunes include "Precious Memories" and "Turn Your Radio On."
Yes, a kid who grew up with Guns N' Roses, Whitesnake, and Metallica does know what good music is. You may not fancy my other tastes in music, but give the Statler Brothers a try. You might be surprised at how much you will really enjoy them.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-01-09
This CD is a treasure for any Christian and Statler's fan. It will keep you humming all day.
Statlers.......2007-01-04
Yes! This CD is a winner!! Cannot beat the harmony of the Statler Brothers and there were plenty of selections for wonderful listening. Buy it!!
Great gospel by great group.......2005-07-23
Great gospel album, plain and simple. The four-part harmonies of the Statler Brothers were never better, and this is the kind of music that makes them shine. I must disagree with those who lament the addition of Jimmy Fortune. While I liked the earlier work with tenor Lew DeWitt, I think Jimmy's voice is fantastic and the group's sound, though a little different, is every bit as good. These are all simple, down-to-earth gospel numbers--all good, with my favorite being the live version of "I'll Fly Away", which has a unique change of key in the middle and enough energy to send you off for the remainder of the day. Good stuff!
A History in Harmony-35 years of the Statler Bro's........2003-11-17
I first feel obliged to say that I have not yet purchased this particular album, however I have been listening for many years on various other albums. One thing is for certain, when someone down here plays this record (or other's with songs such as these), Our Savior, with a joyful heart and great big smile, is sure to be listening as well. Among the most impressive attribute's of this phenomenal foursome, is there honesty and integrity. For over 35 years they've shared the stage with one another and, while having need to replace only one of the original member's, the great counter tenor, Mr. Lew DeWitt, who took his last flight home some years back. Even with this vast expanse of time, through it all, there has been precisely nothing to cast a even the faintest of shadow's on themselves both as a group as well as in their own individual lives, their families or their music. As the mellenium was drawing closer and is now steadily on it's way, listeners of everything from the inspiration and hope of Christian & Gospel music, to the overwhelming anger and bitterness of Gangster Rap & Hip-Hop, are finding all too often that even though certain performer's are able to look and act with seeming sincerity the part on stage, the moment they step off, they become virtually unrecognizable. The Statler Brothers on the other hand, along with many other performers from that period, are who they are by the grace of God and nothing more, Sharing with others their simple secret, making no exceptions, changing nothing based on their surroundings or those who incessantly lurk about trying to . There can only be one conclusion when asking how they do it, and that is through their faith and trust in Christ. This faith and trust, coming from God the Father automatically lends itself to the trongly detected in nearly every song they've let the values instilled be Christ to anyone would say that. To end this review, allow me to just present a list of undisputible facts. 1)The Stat. Bro's have been working, virtually non-stop for better than 35 years. 2)Their has never been a member leave the group for any reason other than death. 3)The harmonies they produced in 1965, '68, '71, etc., are today just as crisp and beautiful, perhaps even more so. 4)Through the songs that Don & Harold Ried, and the other charter member Phil Balsley the world has taken posession of some it's most uplifting, tear-jerking and very often side-splittingly funny assets. In short, their is not, and will probably never be a vocal musical group, in any genre to have what these gentlemen have or do what theses gentlemen have done, and certainly not with the grace, style and integrity with which they've done it. This marvelous quartet, in late 2002, took the stage and grabbed their mic's for last time. I was never afforded the opportunity to see them live, but I will most assuradely continue to listen to their records, CD's, cassettes and maybe even an 8-track or two (this is a large, rectangular cartridge, made in much the same way cassettes and used for the same purpose), and maybe, if we all ask really nicely, after they've rested a bit they will again take their place up front to sarenade us once again. Until then, I guess we'll just have to count the flowers on the wall. My recomendation for this album "Todays Gospel Favorites" is that it's nothing short of must-have. Their other albums are quite good as well, try and get the whole collection if you can, you'll never tire of spinning them.

Amazon.com essential recording
In addition to subverting the conventions of greatest-hits discs--only 5 of these 17 tracks appear in the hit versions from Carpenter's studio albums--Party Doll does a better job of balancing the singer/songwriter's moods than any of her releases since 1992's Come On Come On. Here, upbeat celebrations such as "Down at the Twist and Shout" (included in a live Super Bowl take) and "I Feel Lucky" comfortably rub shoulders with the quietly sweet ("Dreamland," originally on an early-'90s various-artists set of lullabies) and brooding ("Stones in the Road") sides of Carpenter's work. Finally, her rendition of Mick Jagger's title tune hints that she has vital work yet to do. --Rickey Wright

I was very pleased with the service I received and the music is very good.
Nice CD.......2007-03-13
Good quality and many of the songs I have heared on the radio.
"for sentimental reasons".......2005-09-07
"This Shirt" - the mere lyrical content to this song can bring tears to my eyes - that's how good it is!
10,000 miles - quite simply "beautiful" - the ultimate song.
Fabulous songs, great artist and singer. A great listen........2004-10-21
The songs on this album range from down-home country (Shut Up and Kiss Me, I Feel Lucky) to introspective folky (Stones in the Road)to just plain good-time toe-tapping fun (Down at the Twist and Shout). My personal favorite is the lush and gorgeous 10,000 miles, a long, generous and heartfelt wave of emotion set to music. It is truly a masterwork, the kind of recording that only a very few of the most gifted artists could ever construct. This song alone puts Mary Chapin Carpenter into the elite league of All-Time Greats, be it folk or country. But there's much more! Ms Carpenter is not content to be a fabulous singer and songwriter; she's obviously compelled by a powerful innerspring of talent and humanity to new horizons of discovery for her -- and, because she is so perceptive and talented -- for us. This ain't cookie-cutter music, folks. This is the REAL thing. For anyone who's tired of playlists and me-too musicians, Mary Chapin Carpenter is a gust of the highly-charged clear breeze that follows a thunderstorm and lights up your lungs, eyes and heart -- and has echoes of the storm that preceded it. Are there gripes about this music? Only if you don't like emotion, feeling and involvement. This is class A-plus music top to bottom, from an A-class artist. Party Doll was my first CD from this brilliant musician, but I'm rapidly buying the rest of her collection, and haven't been disappointed yet. I doubt that you'll be either. Love you, Mary.
A good value, and a great place to start.......2004-03-20
I was only casually aquainted with Mary Chapin Carpenter's music before picking up this album. The hits I knew were all here, and so was a lot more material I have come to love as well. I was a bit leery that "Down at the Twist and Shout" was a live version from the Super Bowl; this song was the primary reason I wanted a MCC album, and I was concerned a live version recorded in a stadium during the Super Bowl might be of inferior recording quality. But I needn't have worried, the sound is great, and the performance is energetic and fun, with a verse in Creole thrown in for good measure. "This Shirt" is probably my favorite track I was unfamiliar with, but the entire album is quality; there are very few 17-track albums by any artist where I can say I enjoyed every song. I now look forward to exploring her original albums. I highly recommend this album to anyone looking for an introduction to this great artist.

Raymond's seminal material cut in 1963 at a radio station in Moncks Corner, S.C........2007-01-02
Playing Time - 47:17 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.
One artist who owes a great deal to Rural Rhythm is Raymond Fairchild. For Rural Rhythm, this album by Fairchild was originally put out in 1963. It's one of his earliest releases. It was originally called "King of the Smokey Mountain Banjo" album (RR-146) and is given the highest marks. Known as the "31 tune album," some even thought it was too long. An additional album by the same name (RR-254) was subsequently released about six years later by the label. Only three cuts were different. It was unclear why Rural Rhythm had done this, but the speculation was that the earlier release had gone out of print. Those 31 songs are the material on this CD.
Fairchild's pleasant banjo album of mostly old standards included backing by Red White's Dixie Bluegrass Boys (Buck Duncan, Roy Mull, Tommy Rodgers). A reissue entitled "31 Banjo Favorites--Volume II" by Raymond Fairchild was issued on CD in 1999 as RHY-268. Based on a 1999 interview with Barry Willis (author of "America's Music: Bluegrass"), Fairchild shares some recollections about his early days of recording for Rural Rhythm. Dobro-player Clarence Jackson had recorded "Houndog Dobro" (RR-130) and "Bluegrass Special" (RR-132) for the label, and it was Jackson that produced Fairchild's first album for Rural Rhythm. "He come to Maggie Valley," recalls Fairchild, "and told me about that company. I was workin' on Ghost Town, in Maggie Valley. After the season, I got in touch with `em. We cut it then. Roy Mull was on rhythm guitar, Tommy Rodgers was on fiddle, Red White was on rhythm guitar and Bud Duncan was on bass, and me on banjo. It was a little ol' radio station and a reel-to-reel tape recorder. It was Moncks Corner, SC. We worked on it a couple of nights."
When asked why he had two rhythm guitars and no mandolin, Raymond replied, "Well, I don't know the story now, but it seems to me that Mull might have been a little weak. And Red White, he was around, and we figured that two might fill out my pickin' a little better, you know. I very seldom use a mandolin.
Full of boundless energy and determination, his albums demonstrated a multitude of banjo techniques on plain ol' country picking, fiddle tunes, standard bluegrass, old country and gospel. The volume of material being released at the time made it nearly impossible to give it all the attention it normally would have received. Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. It's an immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes. Some should be revived by today's bands. Don't expect to hear vocals, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass instrumental sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
good banjos.......2003-07-31
Although I had not heard of Raymond fairchild, i was impressed with his style, had some good blue grassy tracks and the picking was great
Maybe not perfect.....but what is??.......2003-03-23
To put it simply, Mr. Fairchild is awesome. I have had the privelege of seeing Mr. Fairchild in concert many times and it is always a humbling experience for aspiring banjo players like myself. To be dismissive of Mr. Fairchild's obvious talent, like a previous reviewer called it "gimmicky", is ridiculous. It is obvious that the reviewer is unable to simulate the style of this guy. I agree that the genius of Scruggs and Crowe is well known and they are considered "tasteful", but the "Scruggs" style is also a very simple one to emulate. I find it much easier to tabulate a "Break" by Crowe or Scruggs and to pick it out than to try and play a tune like Mr. Fairchild plays it. You just can't do it without having the talent to back it up. While a certain amount of showmanship is included in Mr. Fairchild's recordings and live-shows, it is the banjo playing that keeps me coming back for more. This CD is not perfect however, the sound leaves a little to be desired in comparison to todays releases, bear in mind this CD was recorded in the 1960's and the mix is weak at times. Also the back-up musicians are not of the caliber that Mr. Fairchild tours with now, but over-all,it provides a raw and true picture of an awesome talent displayed by Mr. Fairchild. More recent CD's by Fairchild such as "Lil Zane" and others, are more polished, so if you are obsessed with a polished product, check some of those out, but if you just like hearing a master at work, buy this CD and look past the imperfections and you will "see" what I "hear". It's not a "gimmicky" sound at all, but an awesome display of a true master that is in complete control of his instrument. If you don't believe me, just try and copy one of his tunes!! Better yet, go catch one of his live performances, where he really shines, and you will have no doubt of his standing of one of the true "elite" banjo players of our day.
musical delight.......2003-03-18
I love bluegrass and love listening to the humming banjo. I had never heard of raymond fairchild, but soon fell in love with his amazing fingers. after listening to this back to back twice, I ended up buying several more CD's of his music.
For banjo history buffs..........2003-01-20
Raymon Fairchild belongs to an exclusive group of super pickers that Bela Fleck has credited with providing inspiration for his own work. Fairchild's picking is raw and fast, and his sound is straight from the mountains. Listening to Fairchild and his unique 3-fingered style is a little like watching a Ken Burns documentary- like finding a missing piece of a puzzle- you'll begin to see the whole picture in the history of the 5 string banjo.
These recordings vary in quality from poor to fair, but each seems faithful to the original.

Inspirational southern Gospel.......2004-12-28
The Oak Ridge Boys can sing gospel like no other group can, and their 'original' lineup proves it on this set of tracks. Highly enjoyable and inspirational!!!
The Original Oak Ridge Boys at Their Very Best!.......2004-07-26
This collection of southern gospel classics is a re-release of the Oak Ridge Boys' "On The Sunny Banks" project, recorded in the early 1960's, well before the group's cross-over into country music. Personnel at the time these tracks were laid down included the great Smitty Gatlin (lead), Willie Wynn (tenor), William Lee Golden (baritone), Herman Harper (bass) and Tommy Fairchild (piano).
The group had been known as the Oak Ridge Boys for a relatively short period of time when these songs were released. Smitty Gatlin purchased the name "Oak Ridge Quartet" from the legendary Wally Fowler in the late 1950's, then changed it to reflect the new lineup. As fans of Southern Gospel know, Willie Wynn was one of the industry's leading tenor singers, and the late Herman Harper went on to create the premier talent management agency that still bears his name. Incidentally, contemporary Oaks fans may be interested to know that this project marked William Lee Golden's debut with the group, resulting in one of the longest tenures in either gospel or country music.
This CD contains positively stellar material from some of the greatest writers in southern gospel -- Dottie Rambo, Gov. Jimmie Davis, and Smitty Gatlin himself, performing his very own "When I Lay My Burdens Down Someday". This one is solid gold. Don't miss it!

This posthumous release gathers together the best-known inspirational numbers by "Gentleman" Jim Reeves, the East Texas troubadour who perfected traditional country's smoothed-out Nashville sound. With his inimitable velvety baritone, Reeves caresses each note in his signature laid-back style, performing with genuine confidence rather than smarm. "I'll Fly Away" marries Reeves's classic tones with Floyd Cramer-styled piano and "Padre of Old San Antone" captures the highly polished Tex-Mex flavor introduced by Reeves on his monster hit "Mexican Joe." "We Thank Thee," an eloquent ballad of gratitude, exemplifies the sophisticated country-pop that Reeves and contemporary Patsy Cline popularized, "In the Garden" shines brightly with ringing guitar coupled with Lawrence Welkian group background vocals, and "Trouble in the Amen Corner" is a first-class tearjerking talkie. --Paige La Grone

Jim Reeves At His Best.......2006-11-12
I usually do not write reviews (I don't do concerts either) but this one I could not pass up. If for whatever reason at the end of a hard day you need to relax, listen to this CD. The music has a most soothing effect and when it is over I feel real good. I am an avid Jim Reeves fan and his beautiful voice is always the key, but the song selections on this disc are wonderful.
All Time Gospel Favorites by Jim Reeves.......2006-03-13
We love Jim Reeves and his music. We just returned from a visit to a hospice where a close friend of ours is dying. We played it in our car going and coming. It is quite comforting.
Almost As Good As It Gets.......2000-01-29
The recording is excellent. Many of the songs I have heard before but there are some good ones that I haven't. I would recommend this to any Jim Reeves fan. I rated it 4 stars because I have the "Essential Jim Reeves" and I feel it deserves the 5 stars. This one isn't quite as good.
this is an excellant cd.......1999-02-01
Christian or not you will enjoy this music, it has a calming affect if your having a bad,or not It's great music. It also has an important message. I can't say enough, it's just beautiful, enjoy. Gospel music at its best.......2007-01-11
This is one of our favorite CDs. We couldn't enjoy this CD more.
All of the tracks are wonderful. We're glad we were able to find
it on Amazon. Hope the Gatlins continue to produce such great music
for years to come.
Gatlin Bros. Family Gospel Favorites.......2005-10-06
Very well done, for just three singers. One of few that carries "Whispering Hope", a favorite of one of our past relatives.
Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin BrothersSing Their Family Gospel Favorites.......2005-08-30
We have almost every Gatlin CD available-This is one of the best--Songs done with different arrangements & are very singable --A mix of old hymns & the Gatlin standards. Really enjoy their version of "Love Lifted Me"
Nice country gospel set!.......2005-01-02
This is a nice Christian country set, from a Top 40 commercial country act that was popular in the 1970s and '80s. Admittedly, Larry Gatlin is sounding a little long in the tooth and slightly shaky as a soloist, but their obvious sincerity and love of the music lifts this album up, and when they sing in an upbeat jubilee style, the Gatlins can really get your toes a-tappin'. There are also some slower ballads sung in a more modern Southern Gospel style, though almost all the songs are older traditional tunes like "Amazing Grace," "Rock Of Ages," Albert E. Brumley's "I'll Fly Away," etc. Another nice thing is that the musical backup is pretty restrained: they just have the band play as much is necessary to get the message across, and leave the emphasis on their vocals and on the words, which is really where is belongs. Gospel fans and Gatlin fans alike should enjoy this record quite a bit.
Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers Family Gospel Favorites.......2004-11-10
XM Satellite Radio Channel "America" recently promoted this album on their "Stained Glass" program. The featured selection was "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning"---a moving rendition of the tradition hymn. Larry Gatlin was interviewed by the host. NOBODY mentioned that "Lower Lights" is NOT contained in Family Gospel Favorites. This was a misrepresentation of the new album. Caveat emptor---I did not double-check the song list when I ordered the album---my fault. But now I am disappointed that a "promised" song is missing.
