Chalee Tennison

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
At a time when teenage girls flock to Nashville to sing bland pop music packaged as country, newcomer Chalee Tennison is a rarity, a bona fide throwback to the days when the hillbillies ran Music City. A former drywall hanger and guard at a maximum-security women's prison, Tennison is also a single working mother of three who writes and sings about, as her press material puts it, "everyday dreams of life and the heartbreak of romances gone sour." If that doesn't sound like Tammy Wynette, the album, laced with a prominent pedal steel, surely does, and not in a manufactured way. With a sob in her voice that even Wynette would have saluted, Tennison also comes naturally to Wynette's Deep South enunciation, and she seeks out the same kinds of woman-to-woman songs of pain, neglect, and personal strength ("Just Because She Lives There") that secured Wynette's legend. So what if the midtempo rhythm numbers seem forgettable? The album's sturdy ballads and Tennison's soulful performance make this a debut to remember. --Alanna Nash

While Chalee Tennison's self-titled debut showed potential, it also seemed tentative and suppressed in places, a stigma that sometimes plagues freshman efforts. This time her confidence explodes as she demonstrates her full range. Her twang, attitude, and taut passion make her the closest thing we have to a postmodern Tammy Wynette. The material, including seven songs she cowrote, is consistent and first-rate. Her vamping, flirty "I Ain't" seems almost tongue-in-cheek, while she approaches "I'm Healing," a song of renewal cowritten with Dean Dillon, with an almost religious fervor. She carries that intensity to the optimistic "This Woman's Heart," "Under Your Skin," and "Somebody Save Me." Her approach may seem modern on "Go Back," yet it's actually one of those timeless, sentimental yarns country singers have spun for decades. She tackles heartbreak from two different directions. Anguished denial permeates "What I Tell Myself," while "You Can't Say That" meets it head on. Nothing, not even the blaring, abrasive, and one-dimensional arrangements, gets in her way. --Rich Kienzle

GREAT CD!! Chalee may not be a household name in the music industry, but this CD ranks right up there with all the big names in the music industry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent second album.......2005-07-25

While matching the quality of her debut album, this album shows Chalee growing in confidence as a songwriter. Chalee only co-wrote one song on her debut album but here she co-wrote seven songs, with Dean Dillon and Rick Carnes among her co-writers. For Chalee to get the opportunity to co-write with men such as these is a great honor.

The standard is set by the opening track (Yes I was) in which Chalee admits to making plenty of mistakes but says she has learned from them. In the next song (Somebody save me), Chalee feels vulnerable, not knowing what to do, but in the third song (I'm healing), she seems to on the way to better times. The fourth song (Making up to you) is about a couple fighting and making up. In the fifth song (This woman's heart), Chalee seems to be happy in love. The sixth track (Go back) is a story about a trucker and a waitress.

In the seventh song song (Break it even) in which Chalee encourages her man to admit that it's all over between them. Then follows a song (We don't have to pray) in which a man leaves a woman but while the woman is begging him to stay but their daughter tells her just to let go. But then comes another song (What I tell myself in which Chalee cannot forget her ex-lover. A song about imminent break-up (You can't say that) precedes a song (I ain't) in which Chalee warns off a potential suitor who isn't looking for true love. The album closes with a song (Under your skin) in which Chalee is very happy in her relationship.

Whether singing ballads or up-tempo songs, Chalee is brilliant. This album didn't give Chalee the breakthrough that she deserved. I feared that it might be the last album that she recorded, such as the ways of the music business, but Chalee has since released another album on a different record label so all hope is not yet lost for her career.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD EVER.......2004-04-29

This CD is the best ever recorded. I am a HUGE fan and Chalee not being HUGE is a problem. Her promotional team is terrible. This CD doesn't have a bad song on it. My favorite song ever is "Somebody Save Me." If you are use to being the strong one that every one of your friends and family leans on...this ones for you. I LOVE THIS CD. BUY IT NOW...you won't be disappointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a voice!.......2004-04-17

THIS WOMAN'S HEART is an honest effort from Chalee Tennison. It's unfortunate, but she was dropped from Dreamworks after her 2003 album PARADING IN THE RAIN was released. She possesses a true country voice that is lacking today in Nashville. This sophomore set really uses her vocals on some great songs about heartbreak and life. The opening "Yes I Did" is an epiphany of sorts, accepting her past and how it has made her who she is today. Songs like "Somebody Save Me" and "I'm Healing" paint a picture of a woman who is trying to do her best under the circumstances, and these songs ring true with their emotion. "Makin Up With You" and "Break it Even" are fun country songs. The title track is smoldering ballad of love and devotion. "Go Back" is a touching ballad that will tug at your heartstrings, as will the emotional ballad "You Can't Say That". Overall an impressive set of songs!

4 out of 5 stars Nice set of songs.......2003-09-30

Chalee Tennison's second album THIS WOMAN'S HEART is a great album that was overlooked, much like her first. It's a wonder why this woman is not more successful, but I guess that's how Nashville is. You are either too country or not country enough. Chalee has a beautiful, distinct country voice, that compliments the songs well. Her songwriting is often simple, but powerfully emotional at the same time. She shows her playful side on songs like "Makin Up With You", a fun uptempo song where she sings about initiating fights because she enjoys the making up process with her lover. Songs like "Somebody Save Me" and "I'm Healing", suggest she is very human and her emotion rings true on these tracks, about being human and hoping for better days. "Yes I Was" is a nice uptempo to open the album with, where once again she proves she is human and has made mistakes, but has also carried herself with dignity and grace. "Go Back" is a touching ballad that has a nice message. Another highlight for me is the emotional ballad "You Can't Say That". This is nice traditional country, that is still mainstream in its approach. Overall a good cd.

5 out of 5 stars A great debut country album.......2005-07-16

Sadly, Chalee never became a major star despite recording three excellent albums for major labels of which this was the first. Of course, there is always stiff competition in the music business but there is no denying the quality of the music here. Chalee has a lovely voice capable of singing both up-tempo songs and ballads superbly. She managed to find some great songs to record although there do not appear to be many famous names among the songwriters.

Chalee co-wrote the opening track here, a superb ballad titled Someone else's turn to cry.. Other equally brilliant ballads include I can feel you drifting, I'd rather miss you, There's a war in me and my favorite track here, Just because she lives there. Chalee is equally brilliant on faster songs such as I let him get away with it, A stolen car, It ain't so easy and Sometime.

This album and the others are as good as anything recorded by the major stars but it seems that Chalee is destined to remain just another brilliant but obscure country singer.

5 out of 5 stars Chalee has a DEFINITE Country Future.......2004-06-28

Listening to this album, you can be sure that with time, Chalee will have a permanent place in country music. Her voice is 101% PURE Country. Her Songs are all upbeat, songs with good lyrics, and what more could you ask for. Rock on CHALEE!

I GOT TO SEE CHALEE THIS YEAR TWICE MY DAUGHTER GOT TO TALK TO HER AND GET SOME PICTURES WITH HER. SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL PERSON AND A WONDERFUL SINGER. HER STORY IS LIKE MY I THINK WE COULD BE TWINS. I FEEL THE PAIN SHE HAS GONE THROUGH THE SAME PAIN I FELT. I THINK SHE DOES COUNTRY MUSIC GREAT

5 out of 5 stars Chalee is #1.......2002-01-28

Chalee Tennison's music has the capacity to touch hearts and change lives. Her voice is strong and sincere, yet gentle and soothing. Not only is her singing talent showcased on this album, but her songwriting as well. She takes the listener on a journey into her life, and almost anyone can relate to something on this album, whether it's the feeling of healing expressed on "Someone Else's Turn To Cry," the sense of lost love on "Just Because She Lives There" and "I Can Feel You Drifting," or the sassy attitude on "Ain't So Easy." This album is a must have for any Country Music fan!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this albm - it's great!.......2001-01-03

I actually bought Chalee's album for the Bat McGrath tunes on it. I had never heard her, but I'm hooked. She's fantastic. It's not often that I like EVERY cut on an album, but this one's an exception.

4 out of 5 stars A Country voice that needs to be heard.......2005-09-24

Chalee Tennison has been around a few years, and has never broken out onto the national country music scene, but she is as good or better than a lot of singers with a much wider audience. She sings with all the emotions in the classic country style of joy, sorrow, tragedy, hope and redemptions of love gone wrong. Much of her material is autobiographical in nature, but not so personal that it gets in the way of our own appreciation of her as a vocalist. "Hank (Williams) Did It That Way." Give her a listen and you just may find a new voice to warm your heart and kick your imagination into high gear!!

2 out of 5 stars Whats all the fuss about?.......2005-01-14

I don't like this album, and can't listen to her voice for very long. Nothing special...

5 out of 5 stars Chalee Rocks!.......2004-10-01

I am so sad because Chalee has never really had the chance to get onto radio other than i n TN. She is a great talent, and this album is worth listening to. She sings songs of struggle and triumph, overcoming the odds,a nd just being a woman. This girl has got it! I think this is her best work yet.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2004-05-02

Sounds just like Reba McEntire. Without the CD in hand I would have mistaken the two.

5 out of 5 stars Chalee is one of the BEST.......2004-04-29

Chalee's latest CD is GREAT. I have been a HUGE fan of hers since her first selftitled CD. She has been on Three labels and had three CDs. She should be BIG, but hasn't had the right promotional team. Songs like "Me & Mexico", "I am LOVE", "Parading in the Rain", "Believe" are all better than most of the songs on the Radio. Buy this CD and her other three. I just hope this isn't the last we hear from her.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Vocals, Touching Song.......2003-07-15

I have been a fan of Chalee Tennison for many years now. This song is amazing. "Easy Lovin' You" is a wonderful story about loving your children no matter what..it's about a woman who has a child when she was 17 and her and her baby girl grew up together. Though Chalee didn't write it Amber Leigh White and Philip White went through the same things as Chalee...Chalee too had her daughter at that age and they grew up together. "Easy Lovin' You" is a must have for any person...Give Chalee a chance, you'll be glad you did!

Not only is "Makin' Up With You" one of my favorite Chalee Tennison songs, but it's also one of my favorite songs of all time! Her powerful voice shines through on this upbeat, sassy tune that will have you clapping your hands and tapping your feet. The bold instrumentation fits perfectly with the playful lyrics without drowning out Chalee's voice. Just another example of Chalee Tennison's awesome talent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-09-09

Tongue-in-cheek cool. Playfully kinky. This lady deserves a big ol' hit...and this just might be the one. One of the finest, unheralded singers that Music City has produced. Come on and jump on the bandwagon now!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun song.......2000-09-07

I really enjoyed this fun song. Chalee's voice is so good and strong.

Chalee Tennison is an absolutely incredible artist. Her last album was an emotional roller coaster. Dead on country. This first single from her new CD is a fun song and once again highlights her truly amazing voice!

This song goes straight to the heart. For anyone who's loved and lost, this song could be an anthem. It brings the listener to the realization that now it's "Someone Else's Turn To Cry" Each song on the CD has a message for the listener.

5 out of 5 stars Chalee Will Touch Your Heart if You Let Her.......2002-12-06

This CD is an awesome collection of ballads and uptempo honky tonkers. You'll love every song, Chalee deals with her past head on in We Don't Have to Pray, and let's the listener get a peek at her heart in Somebody Save Me. But you also get to have fun with songs like I Ain't and Makin' Up with You. One of the strongest songs for this album is Go Back, a hear wrenching ballad you have to hear to feel the impact of. This is a must for any country fan. Chalee is here to stay.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Lyrics Delivered by a Powerful New Voice.......1999-05-18

These are the kind of lyrics from which classics are born, lyrics which stand the test of time regardless of the momentum shifts in Country Music. The video is shown regularly on CMT, and the performance is in a word, powerful. We'll hear this one on the radio for years to come, long after it leaves the charts.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful addition to the country music family!!!!.......1999-05-18

I was fortunate enough to be able to hear a pre-release of Chalee's first album and I'm hear to tell you, she's ready to make her mark in country music history. With a voice that is so unique and so pure it will leave you in amazement. I hear a touch of Tammy Wynette in all of the songs on this album. Her first single,"Someone Elses Turn To Cry," is incredible. Chalee has definitely done her homework on her first album. I look forward to hearing many many more wonderful songs from Chalee. I hear a FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR NOMINEE in this record. Way to go Chalee!
