One of the finest voices in country.......2005-08-08
An excellent album from the eighties.......2004-04-20
The one track that made it onto the American hits collection is Where've you been, which has become Kathy's signature song. However, in this particular song it is the lyrics that people seem to love - they relate to the sentiments expressed. The other hits were all upbeat, catchy songs - Come from the heart, Burning old memories and She came from Fort Worth Texas.
Of the other songs, my favorite is Hills of Alabam. No surprise, really, as this was written and originally recorded by my favorite bluegrass singer, Claire Lynch, who adds backing vocals. Claire's own version can be found on an untitled album by the Front porch string band, of which she was lead singer. The title track is also excellent, as are Here's hoping, True north, Love chooses you and I'll take care of you.
While I slightly prefer her two previous albums (Walk the way the wind blows, Untasted honey), there isn't much to choose between the three and those two are better represented on that hits collection. So if you already have that, this should be the next Kathy Mattea album on your shopping list.
Great Country Album with Kathy's Signature Song.......2004-01-12
If you buy only one of Kathy's albums, I would suggest her Collection of Hits, which I think is even better overall. However, I definitely recommend "Willow In The Wind" for the other songs not in her Collection. Kathy Mattea is one of the few country artists (Trisha Yearwood and Dolly Parton are others) where it is really worth exploring the full catalog of albums to find those hidden gems not included in the greatest hits compilations. If you are building a collection of Kathy's music, this CD is a great addition.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful sampler of music.......2005-09-23
--Music--
Selections on this disc come from eight different Collegium recordings, representing a wide range of the Cambridge Singers' work. Pieces here include secular and sacred work, ancient and modern. There are a cappella and accompanied pieces. Composers represented here include Stanford, Bruckner, Verdi, Debussy, Taverner and Purcell, as well as a number of pieces by John Rutter himself. The latter pieces include the first movement of Rutter's wonderful 'Magnificat'.
Guest performers include the King's Singers and the City of London Sinfonia, Richard Baker as a narrator and Wayne Marshall on the organ.
The music is very well done; Rutter's ear for tone and balance is superb, and his building of this ensemble of singers has retained a consistent beauty and grace through the years. Their best pieces are liturgical and religious pieces, but there is a good deal of power and fun in the secular and folk songs.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

Album Description
Never have you heard more powerful vocal ability than from this young lady. Two tracks were penned by Dana Jordan, "Take That", an "in your face" man-basher type song and "Hold Fast to the Faith", a Christian Country song written for Dana's mother. "Your Love" is a great mid-tempo cha-cha, while "Tell Me I'm Wrong" and "I Can't Help Myself" are heart-stirring ballads. Great sing-along tunes are "The Recipe", "Lay Around & Love on You", while the women's favorite picks are "I Like a Man to Drive" and "Dear John".

Though Australian, more than any figure in English music Percy Grainger consistently blurred the bounds between folk-music arrangements and original composition. Two arrangements of Danish folk songs on this disc, "The Nightingale" and "The Two Sisters," have never been recorded before, while 13 others of the 23 pieces are, in these versions, premiere recordings. An essential issue for Grainger collectors, the music has broad appeal, conveying a direct emotional intimacy in such pieces as the solo piano version of "The Power of Love," a tune that, Grainger noted, "matched my soul-seared mood" after his mother's death. "Molly on the Shore" is among Grainger's best-known folksong arrangements, though not so many will know this vibrantly performed string quartet version. The Lincolnshire song "Died for Love" is given a poignant reading by Della Jones, who also has fun duetting with Stephen Varcoe on "Hubby and Wifey." Elsewhere, Martyn Hill brings the pure melancholy that distinguishes his Finzi songs to "Willow Willow." Impeccably produced and annotated, this diverse anthology is another Chandos triumph. --Gary S. DalkinCustomer Reviews:
REALLY NICE COMPENDIUM..........2005-12-03
This particular volume (Vol. 14) features Grainger's settings of various folk and popular songs which he made in the first quarter of the 20th Century. The accompaniments are set for small ensembles, and Grainger utilized the harmonium on many of the song settings on this disc.
Sound is 24-bit.
