Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one........2001-08-09

If you don't have any Etta Jones (and that's "Jones," not "James"), you couldn't do better than this collection, an assemblage of some of her best recordings from the 80s and 90s (unfortunately, I picked up some of these recordings before discovering this single-disk anthology, by far a greater value). Etta was practically a Billie Holiday sound-alike in the 1960s (which is not bad), but as these recordings demonstrate she acquired even greater strength, confidence, assuredness with the passing years. The recorded sound is up-close, alive, present, and the support by tenor saxophonist/husband Houston Person matches her own robust sound. And Etta's one of the few singers I can think of who can stand up to the sermonizing of the Hammond B-3, which replaces piano accompaniment on some of the tracks.

5 out of 5 stars sampler CD's are geneally dull but this one is excellent..........2000-08-01

This is not just a compilation of her "greatest hits" this CD highlights 14 of her greatest songs from the Muse label. From the last two decades. Among her finest sessions with her husband on tenor sax. excellent.

4 out of 5 stars swings like hell!!!.......1999-10-24

This is a great album. All the musicians are in top form. A must for all fans of good, swinging vocal jazz!

5 out of 5 stars Under the boardwalk never sounded better.......2004-02-22

Lynn Anderson recorded this album for Mercury in 1988, five years after her previous album on the small Permian label and eight years after her last album for Columbia, the label that she was with throughout the seventies. Based on the quality of the music, this attempt at a comeback deserved to succeed but didn't, so Lynn never recorded for Mercury - or any major label - again. Nevertheless, this is one of the finest albums Lynn ever recorded and is well worth tracking down.

Lynn's hit-making years are generally remembered for her up-tempo songs (Rose garden, You're my man, Top of the world, Listen to a country song, How can I unlove you) - she seemed to be particularly suited to those songs although she also recorded some fine ballads. By 1988, she had been married and divorced a couple of times so maybe her outlook on life had changed. Whatever the reason, the up-tempo songs are largely missing from this album, which is mainly filled with ballads.

The tempo of the album starts fairly briskly with Lynn's stunning cover of Under the boardwalk, which became a top thirty country hit. I was, of course, familiar with the original version by the Drifters but I hadn't realized what a great song it is until I heard Lynn's version, which I believe to be superior to the original. The Drifters' classic songs seem to suit country singers - both Buck Owens and Emmylou recorded outstanding covers of Save the last dance for me.

Once past the opening track, we are treated to one excellent ballad after another. How many hearts was expected to be a major country hit but it barely scraped into the chart. The album closes with two Harlan Howard songs (Turn the page, Odds and ends).

Lynn was in peak form on this album, which is certainly among the best she ever recorded. This was not her last album. A new album seems to appear every five years or so. There has been the Cowboy's sweetheart album (which I regard as her best ever album), a live album and a Christmas album. But if you want to hear Lynn singing ballads, this is the album you want.

5 out of 5 stars intense and intimate.......2005-03-31

'right here' is a hard and fast trip into courtney-land, but it's definitely a trip worth taking. the record is completely unproduced - naked vocal and guitar tracks on every song - they pretty much mixed the levels and left it, and that rewards the listener with a sense of privacy, as if attending an intimate concert in the living room. definitely recommended for fans of ani difranco, kathleen edwards and patty griffin... a solid third record.
