George Jones provides the high point on this collection with a very early version of his first-ever hit, "Why, Baby Why," which may well hail from his mid-'50s days as a Hayride regular. The Browns perform "Draggin' Main Street" (one of their earliest recordings), and Jim Reeves is outstanding on "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," complimented by Floyd Cramer's piano. Eddy Arnold delivers a pristine reading of "Cattle Call," and Johnny Horton performs a sweet, austere "Whispering Pines." Judging from the introduction, Johnny Cash's "Hey Porter" hails from the mid-'60s. Hayride alumnus Sonny James sings his 1956 hit "The Minute You're Gone." Visiting Opry artists include the Louvin Brothers performing their 1959 hit "My Baby's Gone," Roy Acuff delivering "Wabash Cannonball," and Carl Smith offering his 1956 hit "You Are the One." Fine performances, but why not more by the Hayride regulars? (NOTE: Recording dates are not included.) --Rich Kienzle
