Lit Up From The Inside

About the Artist
Formed in St. Louis, USA in 1995 by vocalist Adam Reichmann, guitarist Steve Rauner, bassist Todd Schnitzer and drummer Bill Reyland, Nadine has become known for their distinctive brand of independent American rock.

Nadine first performed and recorded in 1996, prompted by a deal with the well-respected German label Glitterhouse. That year saw the release of the debut album, Back to My Senses. The record was never released in the States, but those who heard it in Europe were excited by the potential of this little-known outfit. Q magazine raved "They’ve cast their net beyond standard country rock sources…Nadine promise a classic second album."

In 1997, after Reyland left the band, Schnitzer took on the double-duty of drums and bass – a change that forced Nadine to redefine itself and tackle new challenges with studio experimentation. The result was pure magic. Downtown, Saturday was released in 1999, an intimate, intense record that attracted the attention of a growing audience and the recognition of critics -- a "big step forward" (Mojo), a reaffirmation of the "roots tradition while standing on its own two legs" (CMJ New Music Report), an "instant classic" (five star review, Classic Rock), Top 100 CDs of ’99 (Amazon On-Line).

November 2000 was marked by the release of Nadine’s latest and finest work to date, Lit Up from the Inside. Joined by bassist Anne Tkach, the record shines with the kind of hybrid music Nadine does best – multi-layered acoustic and electric rock with plenty of heart. Germany's Rolling Stone says Nadine "has several talents at its disposal. Many songs on this third album, indeed illuminate from the inside out. Not everything here is rootsy -- ambient accents into the otherwise rustic frame of sound."

The band has recently finished their second tour of Europe and plans to continue recording and travelling in the US.

Product Description:
It’s been over a year since Nadine released Downtown, Saturday – an intimate, intense album that hit the Americana rock scene with it’s signature DIY sound. Lit Up from the Inside is the band’s amazing follow-up. With loose-fitting intelligence and sincerity, Lit Up is full of songs you can never quite exhaust -- from painted, moody ballads to that wildly catchy guitar rock that the radio used to play in summer.

4 out of 5 stars a rewarding journey.......2001-07-02

i came to this record by way of an article in no depression, but that 'genre' doesn't exactly fit this band--the distinctive ache and longing in their music may owe something to country music, but their songs, pop smarts and inventive arrangements propel them into a category they can call their own. for my money, adam reichmann belongs on the list of great american songwriters, and although this record suffers a bit from overproduction, the journey through this record, track for track, is deeply rewarding.

4 out of 5 stars Lit up from another successful album.......2000-11-20

Though not quite as successful as their last album, the AMAZING "Downtown Saturday", Nadine's "Lit Up From the Inside" contains plenty that will satisfy those who liked "Downtown." Rather than repeat the same formula, the band expands their sound and their songwriting breadth. The production is impeccable, and at times the sound recalls that of classic U2 with its large echoing feel. Even though there no songs as immediately catchy as "Closer" or "Twilight" from "Downtown," there are plenty of strong cuts that get better with each listen. The highlights are "Losing Track," the harrowingly accoustic "Streets," the strangely romantic "Still Be There" and the fairly simple "Hope Like the Rain." But picking out selected songs is really missing the point. Nadine's albums create a wonderful, somber, melancholy mood that is quite unique. The only apt comparison I can think of is Saturnine's great lost classic of heartbreak and loss "Wreck at Pillar Point." Needless to say, this isn't music one is likely to find in the Top 40 anytime soon, sorry to say.

Overall, "Lit Up from the Inside" is another excellent album for those of us lucky enough to be acquainted with Nadine.
