I grew up listening to johnnie taylor & this cd is the best. RIP Johnnie.
A closet-cleaning, but a damn good one.......2004-11-01
This twofer is a typical '70s closet cleaning, but contains most of the good songs Taylor cut for Stax, before he left for Malaco (in Stax's demise) and all their drum machines. Contains much of his macho posturing tunes like the "Jody" series, but also some of his light political work, like "I Am Somebody." If you're looking for a singer who reminds you of that guy at the other end of the bar, Taylor's your man. Since it's doubtful he'll get a career-wide retrospective that will tie together the gritty Stax work, the Columbia disco years and the Malaco mildness, one can settle for this and a copy of Disco 9000.

Nostalgic.......2007-01-05
This cd played some nostalic songs, although it was a gift to my mother-in-law, who celebrates her 90th birthday on 6th January 2007 she was tickled pink with the gift, she has always loved Johnny Ray's style of singing and the message's they bring to those in the his era. I seen him as a youngter at Sydney Stadium and he was dynamic, i recommend him to those with romance in their hearts.
Johnnie Ray--a performer who REALLY knew how to reach people with his music!.......2006-05-18
Johnnie Ray was one of the very few huge stars of the 20th century who TRULY knew how to reach his audience and touch them with his great music. He sang and played piano beautifully--but there was something more. When he sings songs on this CD like "As Time Goes By," "Cry," "Walking My Baby Back Home," and "The Little White Cloud That Cried," I am stirred and I feel excited by his music. There's almost a unique energy and level of excitement in Johnnie's voice that literally begs for your attention and emotional involvement with each and every song he performs on this CD. There's also a very well done duet by Johnnie and Doris Day on this CD entitled "Let's Walk That-A-Way."
The recordings here are mono; but you'd never know it. The quality of the digital remastering by Larry Keyes is excellent and the musical arrangements are beautifully executed. Johnnie voice sounds like he's right there in your living room. After listening to this CD I will buy more of his CDs and I already feel sorry for myself that I never got to see him perform in person!
I notice another reviewer writes that Johnnie is not remembered as well as he should be remembered. I strongly agree. Indeed, Johnnie was one of the first authentic rock and roll artists in that he performed using African American rhythm and blues while accentuating each part of the important words in the song. For example, listen to the song "Cry" and notice how Johnnie sings the word "cry" as "cah-ry." Awesome! Oh sure, Johnnie was sometimes made fun of because of his flamboyant style on stage; but the total emotional commitment he made to all his work could never have been anything except a great asset. His paychecks reflected that talent, too!
The liner notes boast an extensive essay about Johnnie written by Will Friedwald. I learned a lot about Johnnie by reading this; and you will, too! Unfortunately, there are no pictures here. If you want the song credits just look at the actual CD itself--they are right there. I would have liked the lyrics printed out for us included in the liner notes but since Johnnie sings so clearly you really won't need them anyway.
In short, I highly recommend this for Johnnie's fans (obviously) and fans of classic pop vocals. This CD is also a good choice for people who want to get to know just how great Johnnie Ray really was. Johnnie made great contributions to the arts during his lifetime; and this CD demonstrates that nicely.
Where Have Johnnie's Fans Gone?!.......2004-09-24
Okay, this isn't as much of a "review" as it is a general call-to-action directed at Johnnie Ray's fans. It's very sad that with all of the great stuff of his that is currently on a digital format, nobody seems to be buying any of it. His entire career is on compact disc, and yet the amazon reviews for all of his CD's combined amount to a handful. Is it just that nobody knows who he is? If that's the case, I urge all of you, please share this music with people!
There's no excuse for this legend to fade away just because of historical revisionism in the musical community. Get your kids to listen to this, and your GRAND-kids! This man moved an entire generation with his music, and there's no reason that he can't do it again, but people have to learn about him. I know first-hand how seldom heard the name Johnnie Ray is. I myself only discovered him about four years ago when I was in High School.
Through a magnificent twist of fate, I was sent home early from school after twisting my ankle, and while sitting in the car that afternoon (waiting for my dad to finish some errands), I nearly bolted out of my seat as a cool, smoky, and effortless voice crooned "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" from the radio that was tuned in to our local Oldies but Goodies station. It made an instant mark on me, but I still had no idea who this guy was. I had to search the internet for hours just to find information on this amazing voice, and when I learned of Johnnie Ray's tumultuous rise to fame (he easily caused more media scandal than Elvis), it was a shock to find out that this man is practically unknown today.
People, I beseech you, don't let this music go unheard one day longer. It has the power to move young people just as it does Johnnie's die-hard fans. In fact, if you can listen to the Cry-Guy and honestly say that you are not moved by it, you should check yourself into the nearest morgue, because you probably don't have a pulse.
As for the CD being reviewed, it's very good. "Whiskey & Gin" is a hard-to-find early hit, and that tune alone makes this disc worthwhile. It's almost scary how close to Rock & Roll this song comes...especially when you consider that it was recorded in 1951, several years before "Rock & Roll" was to become the new soundtrack to American life. Elvis is always credited as the "first white artist to record in an R&B style", but what most people don't know is that Johnnie Ray beat him by three years! Check out this CD. It'll put a new spin on the Cry-Guy, and perhaps present a few new favorite songs in the process!
The Best of Johnnie Ray.......2003-07-06
I have been a fan of Johnnie Ray since I was fifteen and among all DC I have bought of him, this one is the best of them all. The quality of the sound is number one and the selection of the 16 tunes on it was so well choosen that you get exactly all the songs that made him so popular. I recommand this DC for a gift as well as a personal remembrance.
Little known fact..........2003-02-17
My cousins went to school with Johnny Ray at Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon. It was well known that he was close to being deaf. I find it utterly amazing to hear the music he performed...when he could hear very little ! To me he was one of the better singers in the 50's...

David.......2007-01-30
I had never heard of this bloke before, but discoverd it on the radio and had to have the album. Brilliant! Cool piano driven blues/jazz. Will start digging out his back catalogue now.
Incidentally I had trouble sourcing this album in Australia, Amazon zipped it out to me in under two weeksa and for cheaper than the local guy could.
Bring on globalisation!
Here's that cat.......2003-08-30
Ever listen to Chuck Berry music, and when hearing the fantastic piano in the background wonder who that cat was?
Here's that cat!
This is an infectious collection of music that's as fun to listen to, as it sounds like it was to record!
After hearing this, I can't wait to get my hands on some more Johnnie Johnson!
Go Johnnie go go go!.......2000-05-05
Johnnie Johnson is simply a fantastic piano player with a style all his own. Let's face facts - It was Johnnie Johnson who wrote such chuck berry classics as Johnny B. good although they were credited to berry for a long time. Finally Johnson decided to strike out on his own 30 years later and we all should be greatful that he did. Johnnie B. bad is his second solo album and it is just great to listen to. His first album, bluehand Johnnie, while filled with hot piano licks, really sounded forced and uninspiring and almost electronic. Finally with this album he got it all together and just played what he wanted to play and everyone who sat in with him to make this record sounds like they are having a great time. for me the standout track is the opener, "Tanqueray." I could just play that song all day long. It has a nice raw sound to it - almost like a spontaneous jam session. The album carries this feel through almost every track so it sounds like you are listening to a group of guys playing the blues just to have some fun, but the piano player just happens to be the one and only Johnnie Johnson. pick this CD up and you will very quickly see why Johnson easily deserves to be a well-respected musician in his own right - Chuck berry or no chuck berry.
The most fun R & B I know..........1999-09-28
The whole album is a celebration. Tons of fun. After once or twice I guarantee you'll be singing along. And after hearing "Stepped in What?" you'll never look at the sidewalk the same way again...
Johnnie the Great.......1998-07-12
Great blues-boogie piano- w/ Clapton and Keith Richards- even a rare Richards SOLO! Johnnie in fine laid-back form. Tanqueray is outstanding!

my title says it all. i know all about the old skool. i love, its still called the blues, and wall to wall. buy this masterpiece and i promise you will be glad you did.
These songs by JT will make your lady melt..........2000-06-14
...one word for them. Superb. If you don't get a good feeling or a lump in your throat from hearing the late great JT sing "Just Because" then, truly the world is harder than I can ever imagine. It has "Cheaper to Keep Her" from a Malaco live production with JT in fine form. A rendition of Ray Charles' "Drowning in My Tears" is as masterful as the original. But it also has those ballads, those ballads, those ballads..."Everything's Out in the Open" "There Ain't Nothing Like a Lady" "Nothings as Beautiful As You", "This is Your Night" and like I said before, the most excellent "Just Because"; these cuts will make your lady melt. Let me type that again. These cuts will make your lady melt. The CD is already an exceptional collection of Malaco JT tunes, but I would not be angry if the powers-that-be slipped JT's version of "Lady in Red" on it. As it is, you will love the heck outta this!

Possibly Johnnie Taylor's all-time best CD........2007-05-25
This CD is a historically important live recording from one of Stax Records' most important figures. Recorded at the long-defunct Summit Club this is raw, funky and down-home Southern R&B at its best. Although I'm not a big fan of live albums I admit that "Live At The Summit Club" is a true masterpiece of Southern Soul which has a very intimate and relaxed yet spontaneous, anything-can-happen-here feel and ambience. This set's live versions of "Who's Making Love", "Stop Doggin' Me", "I Don't Wanna Lose You" and "Steal Away" eclipse the original studio versions for their greatness. Many thanks to the people at Concord Records for releasing this CD.
LIVE! LIVE! ALL THE WAY LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-06
SOME LIVE PERFORMANCES ARE NOT ALL THAT GREAT, SO I AM A LITTLE SKEPTICAL OF PURCHASING THEM, BUT THIS ONE WAS INCREDIBLE! DESPITE THE FACT THAT HIS BAND WAS A LITTLE LOST AT TIMES, THIS TRULY SHOWS HOW GREAT A SINGER J.T. WAS AND HOW MUCH OF A ENTERTAINER HE HAD BECOME! YOU DON'T EVEN CARE ABOUT ANY MISTAKES BECAUSE HE IS SINGING THE SONGS WITH SOOO MUCH POWER AND HEART FELT CONVICTION. YOU NEED THIS IN YOUR COLLECTION!!!!
Very soulful.......2007-03-29
Johnnie Taylor turned the place out on stage for this show.Johnnie Taylor always was Soulful with his vocals hitting the Grunts&breaking it all down. this is one of those Live Albums that is so Underrated. but when you get your Groove to this you won't soon forget it.
One Greasy Biscuit.......2007-02-27
Recorded live 9/23/1972 at the Summit Club in L.A. The video cameras for the WattStax movie were throwing the band off right from the start. JT picks up on it and he's none too happy. He stokes them back into shape an turns this mutha out. Well recorded. Perfect soundtrack for your next pimps an hos party, some glide in yo stride an some dip in yo hip. Funky, soul vibe, all the way.

Product Description
Recorded near the end of 2004, this is the last recording from Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Legend Johnnie Johnson. The first studio release from The Father Of Rock & Roll in ten years is also his last. After a hospital stay in August & September, Johnnie came back strong. Hale and hearty of spirit, he was in top playing form & always ready to play. You can hear his heart all through this recording, Johnnie s performance leading a band of world class St. Louis musicians through all original material. rock & roll, blues, & Johnnnie s unique hybrid of jazz, swing,& boogie woogie, laid on a foundation of blues & gospel. It is likely that Johnson knew this could be his last recorded statement. And it was a very personal project. Beach Weather is about Johnnie s life & frame of mind, Lucky Four about Johnson s fourth wife. Find Me a Woman, A Good Day, people who know Johnnie would tell you those lyrics could fit him as well. The 2 hard blues, just listen to Johnnie on em. Johnnie's was the deepest blues. The blues is at the base of everything Johnnie played. Johnnie would take you all the way home. Nobody did a turn around like Johnnie Johnson. Johnnie would make the earth move every time. All the songs on the project were a collaboration between Johnson, producer Jeff Alexander, & Rich McDonough. Mention must be given to the band. Rich McDonough is one of the finest guitar players on the scene today. His lead work through the 2 deep blues is exemplary, and his slide on Beach Weather is right on. The interplay between Johnson and McDonough through the entire recording is delightful, thrilling, and instructional. Gus Thornton's bass lines are tailor made for Johnnie Johnson, noone sounds like Gus. He is the man. And Joe Pastor is a wonderful, intuitive drummer. Listen to former Blues Brother frontman Larry Thurston sing "The Blues Don t Knock" and you may start a petition to bring him out of retirement. And Victor Johnson is another guy who should be a household name. There was a lot of feeling here. Johnnie Be Eighty. And Still Bad! Johnnie's last statement. Recorded on home turf, outside St. Louis, live in the studio, with friends.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely marvellous.............2005-08-28
.....you can use any superlatives you like. The great late J.Johnsons last recording has an extremely cool as well as intimate feeling. The songmaterial is simply awesome, written by Jeff Alexander, who is also the primus motor behind the project. (...)
If you are a genuine blues lover, then do yourself a huge favour and order this CD now! Also recommending the project
"School for fools" by Larry Thurston, wonderful CD as well.
The Big Kahuna.......2005-08-15
If you like the blues you're gonna love this. Johnny Johnson may be gone but his music lives on. This was his last recording, which is a shame because he didn't leave a large library of music. The song "The Blues Don't Knock" by itself is enough to warrant the purchase of this CD, yet luckily all of the tracks are good. Got the blues? Not if you don't own this.
Johnnie Be Bad SO Good!.......2005-06-11
If I was a piano I would not want anyone but Johnnie Johnson to play me. Beautiful, vital music. The melodies are magical, and Johnnie's left hand just fills up the songs. I love Rich McDonough's guitar playing! I love the whole band, and love the vocalists. The dynamics are incredible. You do not hear`this kind of dynamics in recordings enough anymore! The Blues Don't Knock is one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard! And Beach Weather is just a happy good time catchy stick in your brain not go away song. Johnnie was a special man. This is special music.
Johnnie Be 80 and Still Bad!.......2005-05-31
Johnnie Johnson's rolicking boogie woogie blues piano on tracks 1,2,4, and 6 make my blue days sunny! I can't feel down when his gifted fingers dance over the keyboard painting a happy sound! Track 3's "The Blues Don't Knock" is a true blues lovers delight with Johnnie painting the mournful sound with his piano talents, Rich McDonough's guitar crying from the innermost depths and Larry
Thurston's always great vocalization interpreting Jeff Alexander's intuitive lyrics. Thurston's smooth, rich sound is on all tracks except 5. Victor "Big Daddy" Johnson supplies the perfect vocal interpretation of a woman tortured man on "Better Sell My House." This CD of Johnnie Johnson at his best and still bad is a work of art. Thanks to Jeff Alexander for making it happen so the rest of us blues lovers can enjoy "Johnnie Be Eighty and Still Bad! Mary C., KZUM, Lincoln, NE
Best Yet..........2005-05-20
I can't stop singing "It's Beach Weather Baby",,. What a cool song, and it's about a happy man! Johnnie Johnson is my hero! I love this cd. The piano bounces my blues away! " A Good Day" is old time rock and roll, with words of strength and integrity. " The Blues Don't Knock" is sure true in my life. The music on here is great The songs are great. And where did this band come from? Amazing players, incredible vocals, A all around must have recording. I can't stop listening to it.
So sad Johnnie is gone, but it sure sounds like he went out rockin! "It's Beach Weather..." up in heaven for sure.

This CD made me want to vomit...I threw it in the trash........2004-10-19
I'm a huge jazz fan, and I was expecting something of the sort when I purchased "NightMusic". The cover to this album is misleading. What you get is some pretty nauseating elevator music that is bland and corny. Please spare yourself the misery and skip this album.
great comeback.......2003-08-11
great-beautiful album.
you have to live in NEW YORK to love it!
HORRENDOUS.......2000-02-06
Listening to this album was a painful experience. How to describe it? Let's see: CORNY, CHEESY, DULL. You want smooth jazz? Pick up a Todd Cochran or Antonio Carlos Jobim album.
outstanding mood album.......1999-07-28
I hardly ever listen to "soft" music, and pretty much gave up on jazz some years ago. But I love albums that present an ambience - the kind you can listen to 10 times in a row - and this one is in that category. Fluid sax & vocals, great piano - I can only hope these guys are planning to put out another one. I also highly recommend "To the Heart" - produced 20 years earlier!
Romance me under the aurora or the midnight sun!!.......1999-06-19
This is a lovely album with mature, mesmerizing male vocals. Several tracks stand out, especially Skyline and Don't Go. I produce a late night smooth music show in Alaska, and find this CD always gets noticed when I play it....solstice, shine on!!

Before Johnnie Taylor was the soul sage of "Who's Making Love" or the pop-disco smoothie of "Disco Lady," he was a gospel star--the lead singer of the Highway Q.C.'s and later of the Soul Stirrers, where he followed Sam Cooke. He eventually shook off Cooke's vocal mannerisms and left gospel for the soul and disco world, but the church always stayed in his voice--and in the wry moralism that underscored even his most libidinous songs. When he sang "I've Been Born Again," it was nominally about the woman who'd made him monogamous, but his prayerful phrasing argued otherwise. Taylor died in early 2000, and Lifetime is a smartly constructed survey of his entire recording career, including dozens of big hits and a healthy helping of alternate takes and rarities (admittedly, though, the last two decades of the years in the title are represented by all of four tracks).
His first big break in secular pop came when the unrelated Little Johnny Taylor had a hit with "Part Time Love" but couldn't promote it effectively; Johnnie with an "ie" stepped in and remade himself as a bluesy shouter, backed up by the Stax house band in Memphis. By the end of the '60s, he'd hooked up with producer/songwriter Don Davis, who was his creative foil for the commercial peak of his career and introduced his voice to the Detroit sound for a string of little morality plays that zoomed to the upper reaches of the R&B charts. (Admirers of XTC's "Standing in for Joe" should enjoy Taylor's "Standing in for Jody.") The culmination of this period, and of his hitmaking career, was "Disco Lady," a 1975 collaboration with P-Funk sidemen, but Lifetime's final disc even makes Taylor's long decline sound as sharp as the rest of his canon. --Douglas Wolk

Woman Across The River: What Regret Sounds Like.......2006-07-01
Any set that includes JT singing "Woman Across The River" with Booker T & The MGs gets 5 stars; I don't care if there's 900 songs on it. "Woman" is the absolute pinnacle of southern rhythm & blues as far as I'm concerned. They say in Memphis, a musician doesn't play the next note until the last one's finished. Here's the proof, right here. It seems unfair to single out any one musician because they mesh together perfectly as a whole, but Booker's Hammond B-3 playing is just sublime. And the liners say they recorded most of this stuff live with very little overdubbing. Holy Mackerel. Oh yeah; there's lots of other killer material on here as well.

A great tribute to a "show you right!" soul singer!.......2002-05-02
This set is a necessary purchase for the JT fan. If you own few of his Stax CD's, this is a treat, since 75% of the box is Stax material. I am a Stax nut, so I had many of the tracks presented.
But it is still worth it due to his early pre-Stax tracks plus his Columbia and Malaco output, ending in the classic " Soul Heaven."
I liked JT because of his great singing voice and his attitude about life in general. He cared less about the critics and the negative publicity. He was one of the greatest.I missed his show in Birmingham about 2 weeks before he died in Dallas in May 2000.
Forget the critics that don't give this set 5 stars. They believe after a certain period of time at Stax his stuff got dull. I believe JT produced quality product until Stax was forced into bankruptcy in 1975 and continued to produce quality until his death. Look at the review on his last album for Malaco!
Show you right!
" mr. johnnie taylor the legend himself".......2001-01-13
I THINK THIS IS THE BEST CD'S BECAUSE THE MAN HAD TALENT AND HE HAD THE VOICE AND HE KNEW IT. FROM GOSPEL TO SOUL HE HAD IT ALL. AND I DON'T THINK THAT IT IS ENOUGH SAID ABOUT HIM AND HIS MUSIC. I HAVE ALMOST ALL OF HIS CD'S AND IT IS MY PLESURE TO ADD THIS ONE TO IT.HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST, BECAUSE IN HIS SONGS HE WAS JUST TELLING IT LIKE IT IS AND WHAT HE FELT AND THOUGHT ABOUT AND YOU REALLYHAVE TO LISTEN TO THE WORDS TO REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT J.T. WAS TALKING ABOUT.JOHNNIE TAYLOR IS RATED NUMBER IN MY CD COLLECTION AND ALWAYS WILL BE.

Johnnie Taylor a real artist.......2000-10-14
Johnnie Taylor was a great artist. His CD Good Love is so great I play it whenever I get the chance. Johnnie Taylor will truly be missed, but his legacy will live on. If you ever need something to pick you up Johnnie Taylor and his soulful voice will do the trick.
Good Love.......2000-07-28
You can't miss me when it comes to Johnny Taylor. I love everything he has ever done, every song he has ever sung. Every song I listen to him sing is better than the last. I always said I wanted to be married to him, and just have him sing me to sleep every night. I am surely going to miss him too. I already do. I love this cd just as I love all his cd's. He was truly the greatest. Any cd that has the name Johnny Taylor on it, I will definitely buy. This was one of the best. All the songs were great.
Johnnie, we are gonna miss ya..........2000-06-02
...we love the heck out of JT here in the Crossroads and are saddened by his passing. This CD here "Good Love" represents both his long awaited return to the radio playlists across the nation and a celebration of that silky soul blues lifestyle we imagined he had. Dressed in a tuxedo, transported only by limo, with a huge diamond studded gold ring on each finger, that brother could croon a good blues song or an R&B lounge favorite and have the sisters out of their seats; he, himself, of course, bearly broke a sweat...the brother was cool, and always cool. But he could also get down home with any bluesmeister in the house. Listening to the cuts here, "Last Two Dollars", "Too Many Memories", "Sending You A Kiss" and, of course, the groovin' "Good Love", I am convinced that most folks don't realise what a great talent the world has lost...we here in the Crossroads know.
Good Love is JT s comeback.......1999-03-12
Johnnie Taylor is a long-time chartbreaker. From the early 60 s with "Who s Making Love" (actually Stax biggest hit ever!!) to the first platinum certificated "Disco Lady" (which is by no means disco-music) and other 70 s hits he always had hits. Especially in his circuit, the chitlin-curcuit where he is a big star ever since. After meeting Malaco the good stuff and succesful recordings came back to him and "Good Love" is without doubt the best he had done in years. JT goes from ballads from Rich Cason, tunesmith at Malaco who prefers rather electronic sounds, to blues-alike songs like the hit "Last Two Dollars". This one became a standard in Bluesclubs around the country and a hit for JT. Dancesongs like "Slide On" leave the people doing the same steps all over the country and ballads in the wonderful Malaco-Sound round the picture up. This one shows once again the versatility of Johnnie Taylor and the great, warm sound of the Malaco Studios. Buy it!
