Though easily as popular as Bing Crosby, Gene Autry was not as versatile and perhaps not as talented as his fellow multimedia star. But to his credit, Autry was better able to capture the imagination of a young, ever-expanding American consciousness with songs that helped create the myth of a West where "you sleep out every night and the only law is right." The songs on this collection span from 1929 (with a wonderful yodeling blues called "Blue Yodel No. 5") to his signature tunes "Back in the Saddle Again" and "You Are My Sunshine," recorded in the early 1940s. What's remarkable about this collection (arranged roughly in chronological order) is how closely many of the early songs are tied to African-American blues. As the collection progresses into the mid-30s, the elements we've come to recognize as "Western" begin to emerge in the music. Through it all, Autry's performances are sturdy and plainspoken, unfolding with an unexpected ease and grace. Generally excellent sound makes this CD a perfect starting place for those interested in one of America's most important early pop icons. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Gene Autry "Back In The Saddle Again:".......2007-07-18

It is Gene at his all time best. If you are either an old or new fan of him I highly recommend it for your collection. Again my cassettes do not even start to compare in goodness to this CD in showing his great musical talents both vocal and instrumental. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Must have CD for Country Western fans........2006-02-14

This is one of my favorite country western CDs. Ol' Gene gave us his best in numbers ranging from Mexicali Rose to Blue Hawaii to Blueberry Hill.

I just can't get enough of the simple somewhat melancholic style. Also these are transfers from analog recordings and the slight degradation in sound quality adds to the "long ago" feeling.

The simple, yet memorable arrangements will melt a heart of stone. I remember listening to some of these numbers on the Voice Of America program. The VOA programs used to open with some songs as a prelude to interviews and the like.

What a treat. Makes one pine for the wide open spaces.

THIS IS GREAT, AS WERE THE OTHERS YOU HAVE ON AMAZON.COM

5 out of 5 stars 25 of Gene's best ranging all different styles he's covered.......2002-01-25

Gene recorded much of his best in between the 1930's and 1940's and this compilation of 25 Gene Autry classics on ASV runs the gamut of musical styles he has covered ranging from western (Back In The Saddle Again, Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Dust, South of The Border, etc.), pop (Blue Hawaii, Mexicali Rose, Blueberry Hill, etc.), blues (Any Old Time, his cover of Jimmie Rodgers's Blue Yodel #5, etc.), country (You Are My Sunshine, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You, etc.) and other styles and were recorded from 1929-1945. While Bing Crosby covered Gene's "Goodbye Little Darlin' Goodbye" ..., the sound quality for the most part is generally excellent while some songs such as "Mexicali Rose" and "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" do sound rough compared to CD's using Sony's original sources but it does sound acceptable for the 78 plus the surface noise adds authenticity and nostalgia for the people who grew up in the era these songs were recorded. This is the perfect introduction to the talent of Gene Autry, plus ASV has a companion disc to this collection called "The Last Roundup" if you want more to add to this collection with no overlap. Absolutely essential to any collection of country, western, and early pop music and after all you can't go wrong with ASV's product after all.

5 out of 5 stars MELLOW VOICE OF AMERICA'S FAVORITE SINGING COWBOY.......2000-03-16

THIS CD HAS 4 BLUES SONGS SUNG BY GENE AUTRY. THE REST ARE MOSTLY EASY LISTENING. THESE SONGS EXCEPT FOR "BACK IN THE SADDLE" HAVE A VERY MELLOW SOUND AND ARE VERY SPIRIT LIFTING. ONLY GENE AUTRY COULD DO SUCH A FANTASTIC JOB. LOVE THE VARIETY AND THAT MELLOW VOICE!

Years ago while I was overseas in the army I bought this tape and have enjoyed it very much. The tape has become old and worn and since I now have a computer the that plays CDs, personal CD player, CD player in my truck, and etc. I bought it on CD so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. Don't be fooled this CD can be enjoyed by any and everybody of all ages. I am 35 yrs. old but I also own CDs by Britney Spears, NSYNC, CCR, Backstreet Boys, the Eagles, B.B. King, Christina Aguilera, and many others and I enjoy all of them. If you enjoy the samples you well enjoy the whole album.

5 out of 5 stars What became of Ellie May? Did she enter a convent?.......2001-01-25

Columbia has released a series of CDs paying tribute to the Country Classics, volume 3 of which is entitled AMERICANA and contains twenty-five so called "saga songs", i.e. numbers which put to music stories of good vs. adversity.

This disk features a veritable posse of legendary artists. Johnny Cash is the most represented ("Don't Take Your Guns to Town", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "A Boy Named Sue", "Highwayman" - the last with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson). Others with more than one track are Marty Robbins ("Big Iron", "El Paso"), Hawkshaw Hawkins ("Twenty Miles from Shore", "Soldier's Joy"), and Stonewall Jackson ("Life to Go", "Waterloo").

Then, there are my favorites:

"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker) makes me yearn for the coonskin cap I had as a kid. It'd look mighty fine at the big management meeting. (Actually, I think it was rabbit fur.) I'd probably run afoul of PETA, though. And who needs that hassle?

"Big Bad John" (Jimmy Dean) reminds me of the hero I once aspired to be. Unfortunately, real, everyday life is pretty much mundane. Besides, there are no mines locally, and sewer work doesn't have quite the same cachet.

Even though I love just about everything British (except Lemon Shandy), "The Battle of New Orleans" (Johnny Horton) is a real toe-tapper. Makes me want to dump tea into Los Angeles harbor. In your eye, Tony!

The next time I have to pay my IRS taxes, perhaps playing for them "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" ("Little" Jimmy Dickens) would get a more warm `n' fuzzy response. Hmm ... maybe not.

Lastly, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys) brings to mind Ellie May sunbathing out by the CEEment Pond. Let's dwell on that vision for a long moment. Dang, Uncle Jed! (If you haven't a clue as to what I'm blathering on about here, then forget it, as you're too young to appreciate this CD anyway.)

My only regret concerning this collection of down-home favorites is that the catchy theme from "Green Acres" isn't included. Pity. I was hoping to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute best!.......2000-10-25

A must have for all true country music fans. It has the ballads and songs of the best bygone era in country music. Buy this and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the memories!.......2000-06-29

I stumbled over this CD while looking for something with "Long Black Veil" on it. What a gold mine I found with all these mostly country oldies plus a few newer ones! About all that is missing is "Summer Wine" and "Miller's Cave." Even to my tin ears, the sound is great; and I certainly enjoy listening to the original recordings rather than someone else's.

This CD is worth it's weight in gold. The mix is outstanding. One of the few CD's that you'll enjoy playing straight through time and time again. The songs take us back to a more simple time. Some of the best songs ever written are here. Simple, infectious melodies that will never go out of style. This CD is worth twice it's price. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars columbia classics Vol 1.......2005-04-08

I was born in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvina. That was way before TV. I remember all these artists and the songs. When they were appearing in Pittsburgh or Wheeling West Virginia (The WWVA Jamboree) I would be right there in the front row. I loved the music when it was Hillbilly, then country western and than The Nashville Sound.

I am so thrilled you recorded all the greats on one CD. I love it and am so happy to be able to purchase it. PS -- I had all the 78rpm records, but over time they got lost. Thank you for putting them all on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect Appalachian honeymoon soundtrack.......1999-01-25

We bought this - on cassette - in Washington DC on our first day of honeymoon in September 1997. Having flown from Northern Ireland, it provided us with the perfect honeymoon soundtrack as we drove from Washington to Nashville, along the Skyline drive, down through South West Virginia, across Eastern Kentucky to Berea, and down to Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. We are from an Ulster-Scots/Scotch-Irish background, and during those three weeks we fell in love with the land that our forebears had settled in so many centuries before, bringing thier fiddles and folk songs with them, creating what was the core of mountain old-time music and bluegrass. From the Carter Family right through, every song is a classic. You must buy this!

5 out of 5 stars New Old Stock.......2007-02-07

I grew up listening to my pop singing cowboys songs in his old pickup. The radio only worked part of the time, the rest of the time he sang. There's a lot of old cowboy songs in my collection that mostly came from his collection. As most things happen a good friend suggested Ian Tyson. This CD looked to be the most appropriate place to start with so I bought it. It's been a long time since I heard some of these classics and Ian does them all justice. I can't get over how his own material blends so seamlessly with the traditional classics. To pick a favorite would be to leave out a dozen other tracks. The only track of the 19 I ever skip is "Tom Blasingame." I was blastin' down a country road the other day in Dad's old truck singing "Whoopee Ti Yi Yo" with Ian Tyson and happy to have found this CD. If you like real cowboy music this is a must have. JB2

5 out of 5 stars great.......2006-07-10

Ian Tyson has a voice & sound you never get tired of hearing. Great CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great Cowboy Songs.......2005-09-13

What a breath of fresh air to finally have true country music. The songs on this CD are wonderful and the voice is exceptional. This will stir the heartstrings and make everyone wish they lived out where you can let dogs run free, horses are untethered and cowboys ride the range. Most definately worth the price. Can't wait for the next song when you listen to this, yet enjoying each one for its own merits.

5 out of 5 stars From Old West to New West . . ........2005-06-14

Ian Tyson is just a great cowboy singer, with all the authenticity of a man who knows the West from horseback and knows not only how to pick terrific songs but sing them with an enjoyable range of delivery. Geographically the songs on this CD cover the high plains from Canada to south of the border, though I find myself preferring the ones that celebrate Alberta ("Alberta's Child" and "Old Alberta Moon"). Maybe they just seem more genuine.

Historically, meanwhile, the songs range from the era of cattle drives with traditional songs ("Whoopee Ti Yi Yo" and "Leavin' Cheyenne") to the New West of pretty girls in pickup trucks and country rock ("Old Corrals and Sagebrush" and "Rocks Begin to Roll"). There are story songs ranging from the drama of "Gallo De Cielo" and "Murder Steer" to the light-hearted cowboy humor of "Sierra Peaks." Finally, there's a fine musical tribute to cowboy writer and illustrator Will James. Plus numerous others.

Previous reviewers here note that the re-release doesn't include "Sierra Peaks," but the copy I just got from amazon includes it, so maybe that oversight has been corrected by Vanguard. And, by the way, thanks to Vanguard for reviving this wonderful set of songs on CD. They are all a pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Great re-release of Ian's two Columbia solo efforts.......2000-03-07

Old Corrals and Sagebrush is a re-release by Vanguard of Ian Tyson's two solo efforts on Columbia in the early 80's. These records were nothing short of groundbreaking at the time. And, yet, Ian was just making music in his living room and putting it on tape. The sessions on this release have an authenticity to them that is rare. There are so many great songs on the set that it would be pointless to single out any. But I will anyway. Whoopee Ti-Yi-Yo (Get Along Little Doggies) is a great rendition that favorite "doggies" song and after years of listening, I can't get enough of it. Hot Summer Tears is a great ballad that, of all things, will remind you just a bit of The Eagles! If only The Eagles could be so good. This song showcases Ian's excellent incorporation of the Mexican sound into his music. So I chose two, but I could just as well have chosen 10 favorite songs on this release. It is that good. My only disappointment is that it does not include Ian's cover of Bruce Utah Phillips' Goodnight Loving Trail. Trail is on the original Columbia release of "Ian Tyson" and is a gem. Too bad it was not included on this one.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Country Hits and Misses.......2007-05-30

I ordered this CD for the Floyd Tillman tracks, which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The rest of the mix is spotty at best, with some tracks bordering on mere filler.

5 out of 5 stars HOT!!.......2003-01-09

As fine a compilation of serious pre-nashville glitz honky tonk as you'll find. REally a great disc.

4 out of 5 stars Classic soundtrack to an idealized 50s honky-tonk.......2000-04-04

I've had this disc for a few weeks now, and I finally figured out what it sounds like: a jukebox at some idealized 50's honky tonk. Columbia has gone back to the vaults to pull out a wealth of country honky tonk material, *27* tracks, clocking in at an incredible *73+* minutes! The recordings range from the mid 40's through the early 60's. The sound is really quite impressive throughout.

Artists include Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys on a mid-40's blues, Floyd Tillman, "Little" Jimmy Dickens, Lefty Frizell, Marty Robbins, Carl Smith, Johnny Horton (forever wiping out the sound of "North to Alaska" and "The Battle of New Orleans" by ripping it up in an almost rockabilly style on "Honky Tonk Man"), Ray Price (with great versions of "Heartaches by the Numbers", and "Crazy Arms"), and more.

Lots of fiddle and peddle steel round out the package. A great buy.

4 out of 5 stars Half is ok, half is fantastic.......1999-10-01

The first half is weak, but the second half (starting with "Hey Joe") makes up for it. It's a chronological presentation. A good sampler. Every song from then on is FANTASTIC!

4 out of 5 stars Start here without hesitation........1999-04-17

These artists had all the technology they needed. Just listen to this stuff! Ones who can deliver a honky tonk song like this are not in such desperate need of digital assistance! A good intro to real country songs by real country singers and musicians.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great collection.......2004-02-28

This is a really fabulous collections of songs. There is a great balance of old and new. This isn't a collection from one single genre and the diversity keeps the mix interesting. It's great to hear songs that wouldn't normally be noticed while a movie is playing and it's also great to hear those easily recognizable tunes from popular movies.

Michael Martin Murphey's 1st CD in 1990 was great. This one Michael sings by himself. Has almost same musical background. I like it but it doesn't make me want to get up and dance.

5 out of 5 stars True and enduring testaments to the American West.......2002-06-08
