Vanguard combines 22 recordings from the 1959 and 1964 Newport Folk Festivals, giving the listener a chance to hear the legendary duo in live performance. Achingly beautiful ballads such as "Man of Constant Sorrow," "White Dove," and "Rank Stranger" showcase the pure, passionate harmonies that mark their best work while "Orange Blossom Special," "How Mountain Girls Can Love," "Hard Times," and "Clinch Mountain Backstep" find the pickers, especially Ralph on banjo, generating considerable fire. Two unnecessary comedy routines and four repeated songs bog down this set, which can't replace the original Columbia and Mercury studio recordings. Still, the music here is of the highest order: Carter's rich lead vocals blend exquisitely with Ralph's raw mountain tenor. --Marc Greilsamer

After waxing their seminal Rich-R-Tone and Columbia recordings from 1947 to 1952, Carter and Ralph Stanley actually broke up their band; Carter even joined Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys for a short stretch while Ralph recuperated from a car accident. By 1953, they were back recording for Mercury and for the most part continuing to fuse the raw mountain music they grew up on with Monroe's more progressive propulsive style--although the duo does branch out a bit stylistically across these 48 tracks. Still, when it comes to two-part bluegrass harmonies, the Stanleys were without question the pair to beat: The blend of Carter's rich, warm voice with Ralph's crude, coarse moans stands as one of bluegrass's most distinctive sounds. Whether singing about the home folks (both living and deceased), the Lord, or the lover (both faithful and not), the Stanleys imparted a blunt, emotionally honest, soul-baring intensity. Along with the Rich-R-Tone and Columbia sets, this record is an essential collection of not only the Stanley Brothers' work, but of bluegrass in general. --Marc Greilsamer

Powerful!.......2005-03-14
Keith Whitley does a wonderful job on the titles that he sings lead on for this album. Two of the best songs are definitely "Traveling the Highway Home," which features great banjo work and the call and response arrangement of "Amazing Grace." The haunting and archaic vocals will definitely over power you. The entire album is full of wonderful and traditional music that deals with questions of death, life, struggles, and overcoming obstacles. We find our help in the Lord and this album is honest and soul-stirring.
Clinch Mountain Gospel features some of the best and classic work of Ralph Stanley gospel. The recording sound is excellent! There is no doubt this album is a timeless treasure in the history of the Stanley style and American music. The uniqueness and talent of Ralph and his band is simply magical.
This will reach you, religious or not!.......2004-01-26
Excellent from top to bottom.......2002-03-28
As always, Ralph Stanley takes Bluegrass Gospel where only he can take it with his high tenor voice.
Some of the best on the album are "Over In Gloryland", "Jesus Savior Pilot Me", "I've Just Seen the Rock of Ages" and "I am Weary."
The sound of this album was of much better quality than expected with both the vocals and insturmentation being extremely clear (recorded in the 70's, I wasn't sure what to expect).
Whether a fan of bluegrass, gospel or both, this CD is for you.

Ralph Stanley's half-century-long career received a nice boost late in 2000 with the release of Joel and Ethan Coen's movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? The film prominently featured three tunes from the Stanley repertoire, including the title tune of this stellar anthology (although it's not Stanley's version that's featured in the film). Another is the hillbilly lament "Oh Death," a traditional song that perfectly suits Stanley's high, wavering, mournful voice. Focusing on Stanley's post-Stanley Brothers career, this set serves as a fine introduction to his estimable body of work, including gems like "Goin' Up Home to Live in Green Pastures"--as pretty a country gospel tune as has ever been recorded--"Hard Times," and "Old Richmond Prison." It's an altogether satisfying collection that leaves the listener wanting more. --Gregory McNameeCustomer Reviews:

Ralph Stanley sings songs of sorrow and he means it; I think the scary feeling many listeners talk about comes from Stanley hitting home, a deadeye bullseye on some archetypical fears.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
In many ways a follow-up to 1992's stunning Saturday Night & Sunday Morning, this glorious two-CD set pairs the bluegrass pioneer with established legends and notable comers from across the worlds of country and bluegrass. Now in his 70s, Stanley still possesses the most spine-tingling high-tenor wail the world has ever known, and he still knows how to make it mesh with whoever might be joining him. --Marc GreilsamerAmazon.com
Few country artists, among them Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, and the Louvin Brothers, have amassed such an impressive body of work as Ralph Stanley. On this simply amazing two-CD set, Stanley mines his musical legacy by inviting current country and bluegrass artists to record with his band in the studio, and a veritable who's-who jump at the opportunity. Dwight Yoakam, Laurie Lewis, Jim Lauderdale, Gillian Welch, BR5-49, Bob Dylan, and sundry others join the legendary claw-hammer banjo picker and rip through the Stanley Brothers songbook, prompting country troubadour Hal Ketchum to say, "Singing with Ralph Stanley is like painting with Picasso." --Tod NelsonCustomer Reviews:
As Good As Bluegrass Gets.......2003-02-09
Guest vocalists run the gamut of bluegrass artists (Tim O'Brien, Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss), country artists who got their start in bluegrass (Marty Stuart, Vince Gill), old-school country (George Jones, Porter Wagoner), alt-country (Gillian Welch) and artists like Bob Dylan, who defy categorization.
From beginning to end, this is a glorious album. Each song is recorded with such passion that you don't want it to end. I'm encouraged that bluegrass has been enjoying a rebirth in popularity in recent years, and if projects like this are a consequence, then I say hallelujah! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Mountain music for everybody to enjoy.......2002-08-18
There are four main reasons for the success of this project.
1. Ralph is in remarkably good voice throughout - how many singers of his age could you say that about?.
2. His musicians are in top form, providing a bluegrass backing leaning towards traditional country.
3. Traditional country and bluegrass were not fashionable at the time, so this album was a total contrast to, and a refreshing change from, mainstream country. I love mainstream country too, but I also like the traditional music.
4. Because the music was unfashionable, nobody expected this to be a big seller, so all the guests were there to enjoy themselves, and it shows in the music.
The choice of songs is excellent, although I'm not sure why they chose to include Christmas songs (Beautiful star of Bethlehem with Connie Smith and Bright morning star with Kathy Mattea) - I love Christmas music, but I prefer it to be on separate CD's. Still, that's a minor point.
Your favorite tracks are likely to depend on who are your favorite guests. Bluegrass is well represented (of course), while there are several mainstream country singers, past and present. Porter and George's careers are almost as long as Ralph's, while Vince, Patty and Dwight were all at the peak of their careers when this was recorded.
The biggest surprise is Bob Dylan. He doesn't usually take part in such projects, but he fits in well. No doubt his inclusion helps to attract some people to this album who would otherwise ignore it.
Those who live in the mountains may relate directly to this music, but for those of us who live in cities, this is as good a piece of escapism as we're going to find, now that so much country music has gone uptown.
Enjoy this - and Clinch mountain sweethearts too !!!!

Bluegrass Legend Stanley at his best!.......2002-03-19
For those of you from the country scene new to bluegrass, you'll hear many voices you recognize from the country radio scene including Dwight Yoakam, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill, George Jones and Kathy Mattea just to name a few.
You'll also get to hear many of today's bluegrass greats including Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krause and Gillian Welch.
Although all tracks are excellent, some of the standouts are his rendition of "Pretty Polly" with Patty Loveless, "Thy Burdens are
greater than mine" and "Lonesome Banjo Man" with his son, "Bright Morning Star" with Kathy Mattea and "The Lonesome River" with Bob Dylan.

Considering the tremendous role that family has played throughout his life, it was by no means a foregone conclusion that Ralph Stanley would persevere in music following his brother Carter's death in 1966. Not only did the younger Stanley choose to carry on (at the age of 40) the tradition of the Stanley Brothers, he was able to build on it. The Clinch Mountain Boys circa 1971--Stanley, Curly Ray Cline, Roy Lee Centers, and Jack Cooke--already ranked among the elite ensembles in bluegrass before Stanley added the talents of young bucks Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs. This glorious four-CD box is at once a celebration of Stanley's return to peak form and a thorough and thoroughly rewarding investigation of this classic period in Clinch Mountain Boys history. All facets of this band are revealed: breakneck traditional fiddle and banjo tunes, scintillating a cappella gospel harmonies, rousing live cuts from their 1971 Japanese tour, old-time favorites from the Carter Family, and, of course, a full slate of Stanley Brothers classics. If anything, Stanley's own mountain whang became even more spine-shivering as time passed. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

The unaccompanied ballads are haunting and truly a vista to the old Baptist rule of no instrumentation for the hymns in church. I play these discs so often, I'm worried about wearing them out. The instrumentals on disc 4 are great examples of Dr Stanley on his game!
This label and period is my favorite version of Ralph Stanely. Thank you Ralph Stanley!

This 16-track duet package is something of a companion piece to 1993's Saturday Night & Sunday Morning and 1998's Clinch Mountain Country, both of which offered a dazzling array of duets featuring Ralph Stanley singing with an A-list of country and bluegrass stars. Clinch Mountain Sweethearts, which features only female partners, is a worthwhile collection, though somewhat less focused than its predecessors. Country, folk, and pop stalwarts such as Iris DeMent, Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch, Chely Wright, and Joan Baez display their artistry as they square off with Stanley at the microphone. But the real treats are Stanley's duets with less celebrated talents like Gail Davies, Melba Montgomery, Valerie Smith, Kristi Stanley, and Jeannie Seely. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:
+ 1/2 stars.....Bluegrass Is Alive And Thriving.......2003-02-09
The premise to this 2001 Rebel release was simple: Find some of the best female vocalists in the business and revisit some of the old Stanley Brothers classics. I was skeptical at first, but after the first notes of "Ridin' That Midnight Train" with Iris DeMent, any misgivings I had disappeared.
Although no less moving, Stanley performs "Oh, Death" with Gillian Welch--not a capella, but with the backing of the Clinch Mountain Boys. Other highlights are Dolly Parton's version of "Loving You Too Well," Sara Evans' "Are You Tired of Me, Darling," Lucinda Williams' "Farther Along" and Valerie Smith's "I'll Remember You in My Prayers." Truth to tell, these are are all lovingly performed songs.
As the reigning patriarch of bluegrass, it's encouraging to see Ralph Stanley (who was 73 when these recordings were made) not only receive the recognition he deserves but for helping pass the torch so bluegrass will continue to thrive into the 21st Century. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
In Dreamland with Dolly, Iris, Melba, Chely, Lucinda, et al.......2002-08-01
Though under-represented, some notable ladies did appear on the previous albmus (Clinch Mountain Country and Saturday Night Sunday Morning), including Connie Smith (who also appeared on that John Prine album), Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris. Patty Loveless, Rhonda Vincent and Laurie Lewis, so they leave the stage to others this time.
All the songs are beautifully sung and well chosen. On albums like these, your favorites tend to depend on which guests you like best, but there are so many here that I love, although Dolly is my favorite singer.
Valerie Smith recorded a stunning debut album (Patchwork Heart), listed as Limited Availabilty by Amazon.com - a definite contender for my favorite bluegrass album. I haven't heard her second, Turtle wings.
It's great to see Jeannie Seely back in the recording studio, singing a lovely version of I'm ready to go.
Kristi Stanley (Ralph's daughter-in law) makes her recording debut here, and acquits herself well. It remains to be seen whether she records anything of her own.
Patty Mitchell, who also puts in a great performance, was once a member of the Dixie Chicks. Their music pre-Natalie was very different, much more solidly traditional (way off the mainstream - I could never imagine a major label wanting them), as evidenced on their Little ol' cowgirl album, one of three unavailable early albums, not listed by Amazon.com.
Then there's Pam, Maria, Sara, Gail, Joan, Gillian and the five in my headline .... each and every one of them makes a magnificent contribution. For Iris fans, there's a real treat - she gets to do two songs.
So there you have it - a great bluegrass album of love songs, featuring fifteen magnificent ladies, some world-famous like Dolly and Joan, some complete unknowns like Patty and Kristi and the rest somewhere in between, yet all putting in strong enough performances such that nobody really stands out from the rest - and that makes for a great album.

My heartfelt wish is that this wonderful music continues to find its way into popular culture. We need Ralph unplugged on MTV! If it worked for Tony Bennett it can work for Ralph (although Ralph would be a considerably more challenging cross-over project!). If this NYC-raised Van Halen - George Clinton lover can "get it", anyone can!!
