"The best compilation of Carter Family songs I've heard in years. Vocals and instrumentals are as good as it gets." John Blisard / Tamarack - The Best of West Virginia
"On Bristol, Virginia-born singer Ginny Hawker and West Virginia-bred vocalist Kay Justice cover ballads and spirituals made famous by country music pioneers the Carter Family. Ex-New Lost City Ramblers guitarist Tracy Schwarz and autoharp/banjo player Mike Seeger, among others, provide an elegant, yet earthy accompaniment to the ladies' Carter-pure harmonies. Hawker and Justice may not be as well known as Emmylou Harris, but like that country stalwart, their mellow voices are simultaneously temperate and striking. Their singing is free of twang but full of bittersweet inflections, which highlight the enduring beauty of these old-fashioned songs -- not even a card-carrying member of the Church of Satan could resist "On The Rock Where Moses Stood," a hopping hymn graced with surprising melodic twists." - Carlene Bauer / CMJ New Music Report / Issue: 637 - Oct 4, 1999
"Originally from Virginia, Ginny Hawker now lives in Gilmer County, West Virginia. Kay Justice was born in southern West Virginia and now lives in Abingdon, Virginia. These ladies have thoroughly studied the music of the original Carter Family from Virginia, who first recorded in Bristol, Tennessee in 1927.
"The extensive liner notes provide much information about the songs, and the dates the Carter Family made the original recordings. There are many things to like about this project. Kay and Ginny each sing beautiful lead and harmony. Mike Seeger plays some beautiful autoharp while Tracy Schwarz's lead guitar reflects much influence from Mother Maybelle Carter. One of the most interesting songs is "Sunshine In The Shadows." Mike and Kay each play the banjo in the old-time clawhammer way. Ginny sings the lead on this one with Kay adding the harmony part. Mac Traynham sings bass much in the style of the late A. P. Carter. Mac sings on "Sunshine In The Shadows," but is not credited for that song in the liner notes. Amy Michels plays some nice old-time banjo on "Walking In The King's Highway."
"The musical efforts of the cast is exactly what was needed on each song. But the main focus here is the vocals of Ginny Hawker and Kay Justice. They have obviously prepared well for this project. I was unable to target one song out of the fifteen as a standout. Each song has value and the vocal treatment by Ginny and Kay made each song come alive.
"This project is a MUST for anyone who loves original country music. This is the way it started and the way it should remain. When old-time music is performed as good as it is on Bristol, don't mess around. Put it out just that way. That is exactly what Ginny and Kay have done." Frank Overstreet / SPBGMA's Bluegrass Music News
Product Description
The latest release in too many years by this fantastic duo celebrates the wonderful music of the Carter Family. While Carter tunes have shown up on previous Ginny & Kay releases, this is the first project devoted solely to the songs and style of this legendary first family of country music. In his liner notes, John Lilly accurately describes the project: "Combine great singing, timeless material, mature musicianship, inspired arrangements, judicious engineering and mixing, and a soulful edge, and this is what you get. You get a heartfelt tribute to one of Americas great musical families, and a testament to the strength and importance of traditional music in a modern age. This recording will ring in our ears for many years to come." Adding Carter-esque touches throughout are several excellent supporting musicians: Tracy Schwarz on Maybelle Carter-style guitar, Mike Seeger on autoharp and old-time banjo (yes, the Carter Family was known to sport a banjo on a t! une or two every now and again), Mac Trayhnam on A. P. Carter-inspired bass vocals, and Amy Michels on one additional track with old-time banjo.

Album Description
The prolific Johnny Bristol made his name at Motown as a writer & producer of tracks like Diana Ross & the Supremes' 'Someday We'll Be Together', a song he co-wrote years before. In 1974, he did a successful production assignment for Boz Scaggs & made his solo debut for MGM. In short order, Bristol created an intriguing persona with a patented wry vocal delivery. The title track is a sensual masterpiece that all but summed up his lyrical meter. The infinitely playable & smooth 'You & I' is just as good. 'I Got Cha Number', also on Scaggs' Slow Dancer, has Scaggs coming on to do some fun harmony vocals, but tracks like 'Memories Don't Leave Like People Do' & 'Love Me for Reason' are so-so efforts. This is prime '70s L.A. R&B/pop with Bristol's sure production hand & arrangements by H.B. Barnum. Players include David T. Walker & his singular guitar fills. Polydor Japan.Customer Reviews:

Every last note..........2006-06-14
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Johnny Bristol - The MGM Collection

Product Description
North Carolina native Johnny Bristol was best-known as a Motown songwriter/producer during the Sixties. With partner Harvey Fuqua he helmed several classic hits, like Aint No Mountain High Enough, by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. He closed the decade as producer and co-writer of the Diana Ross & The Supremes final no. 1, Someday Well Be Together. Despite his successes, Bristol never seemed to be able to escape the shadow of Motowns better-known writing/production wizards, Holland-Dozier-Holland and Smokey Robinson. Bristol was also underrated as a singer and, when he signed with MGM Records in 1974, his performing side began to get the recognition it deserved. Hang On In There Baby seemed to burst out of nowhere that year. But Bristol had, in fact, earlier teamed with Jackey Beavers for several singles back in the early Sixties. At the age of 35, he felt it was time either to get back into the world of performing or hang up the mic for good. He believed that the title track from his first solo record would have been a hit for anyone, so why not do it for himself? The record was a crossover smash in America and reached no. 3 in the UK. He also was nominated for a pair of Grammys that year, including Best New Artist. Bristol followed up the Hang On In There Baby album with a second, more personal MGM disc, Feeling The Magic, which featured among its credits a pre-Raydio Ray Parker Jr. The Hip-O Select release includes all the tracks from both MGM albums, plus a 1980 re-tooling of Hang On In There Baby with Alton McLain. Bristol had given this reissue his enthusiastic blessing, but he was not able to see its release, as he passed away in March of 2004. The album stands as testament to his talent and a proof of one of his songs sentiments: memories dont leave like people do.

For traditional country fans ONLY.......2002-07-31
Not being familiar with the originals, I cannot say whether they are faithful covers, but it's likely that they are, because the whole style of the album reminds me of the Carter family, even though it's a long time since I heard any of their own music.
Carter fans may wonder what the point is of buying this. My answer is that these recordings were made using digital technology, so the sound quality is far superior to the Carter's own, however well remastered. For the rest of us, this is a great album of uncompromising, acoustic, traditional country, and it will cause people to seek out the original music.
