Editorial Reviews

Frank Overstreet / SPBGMA's Bluegrass Music News
"The best compilation of Carter Family songs I've heard in years. Vocals and instrumentals are as good as it gets." John Blisard / Tamarack - The Best of West Virginia

"On Bristol, Virginia-born singer Ginny Hawker and West Virginia-bred vocalist Kay Justice cover ballads and spirituals made famous by country music pioneers the Carter Family. Ex-New Lost City Ramblers guitarist Tracy Schwarz and autoharp/banjo player Mike Seeger, among others, provide an elegant, yet earthy accompaniment to the ladies' Carter-pure harmonies. Hawker and Justice may not be as well known as Emmylou Harris, but like that country stalwart, their mellow voices are simultaneously temperate and striking. Their singing is free of twang but full of bittersweet inflections, which highlight the enduring beauty of these old-fashioned songs -- not even a card-carrying member of the Church of Satan could resist "On The Rock Where Moses Stood," a hopping hymn graced with surprising melodic twists." - Carlene Bauer / CMJ New Music Report / Issue: 637 - Oct 4, 1999

"Originally from Virginia, Ginny Hawker now lives in Gilmer County, West Virginia. Kay Justice was born in southern West Virginia and now lives in Abingdon, Virginia. These ladies have thoroughly studied the music of the original Carter Family from Virginia, who first recorded in Bristol, Tennessee in 1927.

"The extensive liner notes provide much information about the songs, and the dates the Carter Family made the original recordings. There are many things to like about this project. Kay and Ginny each sing beautiful lead and harmony. Mike Seeger plays some beautiful autoharp while Tracy Schwarz's lead guitar reflects much influence from Mother Maybelle Carter. One of the most interesting songs is "Sunshine In The Shadows." Mike and Kay each play the banjo in the old-time clawhammer way. Ginny sings the lead on this one with Kay adding the harmony part. Mac Traynham sings bass much in the style of the late A. P. Carter. Mac sings on "Sunshine In The Shadows," but is not credited for that song in the liner notes. Amy Michels plays some nice old-time banjo on "Walking In The King's Highway."

"The musical efforts of the cast is exactly what was needed on each song. But the main focus here is the vocals of Ginny Hawker and Kay Justice. They have obviously prepared well for this project. I was unable to target one song out of the fifteen as a standout. Each song has value and the vocal treatment by Ginny and Kay made each song come alive.

"This project is a MUST for anyone who loves original country music. This is the way it started and the way it should remain. When old-time music is performed as good as it is on Bristol, don't mess around. Put it out just that way. That is exactly what Ginny and Kay have done." Frank Overstreet / SPBGMA's Bluegrass Music News

Product Description
The latest release in too many years by this fantastic duo celebrates the wonderful music of the Carter Family. While Carter tunes have shown up on previous Ginny & Kay releases, this is the first project devoted solely to the songs and style of this legendary first family of country music. In his liner notes, John Lilly accurately describes the project: "Combine great singing, timeless material, mature musicianship, inspired arrangements, judicious engineering and mixing, and a soulful edge, and this is what you get. You get a heartfelt tribute to one of Americas great musical families, and a testament to the strength and importance of traditional music in a modern age. This recording will ring in our ears for many years to come." Adding Carter-esque touches throughout are several excellent supporting musicians: Tracy Schwarz on Maybelle Carter-style guitar, Mike Seeger on autoharp and old-time banjo (yes, the Carter Family was known to sport a banjo on a t! une or two every now and again), Mac Trayhnam on A. P. Carter-inspired bass vocals, and Amy Michels on one additional track with old-time banjo.

Album Description

The prolific Johnny Bristol made his name at Motown as a writer & producer of tracks like Diana Ross & the Supremes' 'Someday We'll Be Together', a song he co-wrote years before. In 1974, he did a successful production assignment for Boz Scaggs & made his solo debut for MGM. In short order, Bristol created an intriguing persona with a patented wry vocal delivery. The title track is a sensual masterpiece that all but summed up his lyrical meter. The infinitely playable & smooth 'You & I' is just as good. 'I Got Cha Number', also on Scaggs' Slow Dancer, has Scaggs coming on to do some fun harmony vocals, but tracks like 'Memories Don't Leave Like People Do' & 'Love Me for Reason' are so-so efforts. This is prime '70s L.A. R&B/pop with Bristol's sure production hand & arrangements by H.B. Barnum. Players include David T. Walker & his singular guitar fills. Polydor Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, Simply Awesome!.......2005-07-24

I first heard this album back in the 70's while living on the island of Barbados. It had come directly from England where it was extremely popular at the time. As a teenager, I identified with the lyrics as well as the delivery, and found it to be very sexy. The music has hung around in my head for many, many years... and I found myself searching for the album over the internet year after year, without any result (not even on Napster). Then, I found the Title Song "Hang On In There Baby" on one of the file sharing systems about 5 years ago, realizing then that the Internet will finally get me back in touch with this super sweet music. Now, here it is, in all it's spendor, and easily available on Amazon. Thank you Amazon, for bringing Johnny Bristol's sweet music back to me. 5 out of 5 stars Every last note..........2006-06-14

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
      Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

          Product Description

North Carolina native Johnny Bristol was best-known as a Motown songwriter/producer during the Sixties. With partner Harvey Fuqua he helmed several classic hits, like Aint No Mountain High Enough, by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. He closed the decade as producer and co-writer of the Diana Ross & The Supremes final no. 1, Someday Well Be Together. Despite his successes, Bristol never seemed to be able to escape the shadow of Motowns better-known writing/production wizards, Holland-Dozier-Holland and Smokey Robinson. Bristol was also underrated as a singer and, when he signed with MGM Records in 1974, his performing side began to get the recognition it deserved. Hang On In There Baby seemed to burst out of nowhere that year. But Bristol had, in fact, earlier teamed with Jackey Beavers for several singles back in the early Sixties. At the age of 35, he felt it was time either to get back into the world of performing or hang up the mic for good. He believed that the title track from his first solo record would have been a hit for anyone, so why not do it for himself? The record was a crossover smash in America and reached no. 3 in the UK. He also was nominated for a pair of Grammys that year, including Best New Artist. Bristol followed up the Hang On In There Baby album with a second, more personal MGM disc, Feeling The Magic, which featured among its credits a pre-Raydio Ray Parker Jr. The Hip-O Select release includes all the tracks from both MGM albums, plus a 1980 re-tooling of Hang On In There Baby with Alton McLain. Bristol had given this reissue his enthusiastic blessing, but he was not able to see its release, as he passed away in March of 2004. The album stands as testament to his talent and a proof of one of his songs sentiments: memories dont leave like people do.

One day while looking at albums at Tower Records on Sunset Blvd, in Los Angeles, I struck up a conversation with the gentleman who photographed and did the art direction for this album. I had a vague idea who Johnny Bristol was, so on his recommendation, I purchased this music. I am eternally grateful to him for this album has become a favorite of mine. Musicians like Willie Weeks, David T. Walker, Ray Parker Jr., Earl Palmer, Ed Greene, Sonny Burke, the incomparable Victor Feldman, and the one and only Ernie Watts brought Mr. Bristol's music alive. Man, oh man, I just couldn't get enough of "I Love Talkin' 'Bout Baby"(great sax work from Ernie Watts, how much sexier could this get?) and the beauty of "She Came Into My Life". This man can sing!! Put this on late at night, with the one you love and let Mr. Johnny Bristol work his special kind of magic. It's no wonder he also produced an album for Johnny Mathis! On another note, the art direction is just in line with the contents of this album, classic and sexy, not an easy thing to do, but it truly works.

          5 out of 5 stars Tastefully Sexy.......2005-03-10

Former Motown producer Johnny Bristol had a huge hit in 1974 with the Grammy-nominated "Hang On In There Baby". BRISTOL'S CREME was his third album and featured the top-10 r&b hit "Do It To My Mind" as well as two other top-40 r&b hits "I Sho Like Groovin' With Ya" and "You Turned Me On To Love". Johnny's seductive "Barry White meets Bill Withers meets Lou Rawls meets Jerry Butler" vocals simmer on these three r&b hits and "Baby's So Much Fun To Dream About" and "Love To Have A Chance To Taste The Wine", while luscious rhythm and string arrangements add their romantic appeal. Perfect r&b for dimming the lights with that special someone.

          Album Description

5 out of 5 stars For traditional country fans ONLY.......2002-07-31

This is a selection of Carter family songs, many of them obscure, recorded by two ladies who grew up listening to this type of music. They certainly know their stuff, and have managed to avoid Keep on the sunny side, Wildwood flower and anything else that would be an obvious choice. I never tire of those two songs, but a lot of people do, only because they have been recorded so often. Anyway, it's difficult to tire of the songs here by listening to other CD's (except the relevant Carter Family CD's) because they are so rarely covered.

Not being familiar with the originals, I cannot say whether they are faithful covers, but it's likely that they are, because the whole style of the album reminds me of the Carter family, even though it's a long time since I heard any of their own music.

Carter fans may wonder what the point is of buying this. My answer is that these recordings were made using digital technology, so the sound quality is far superior to the Carter's own, however well remastered. For the rest of us, this is a great album of uncompromising, acoustic, traditional country, and it will cause people to seek out the original music.

5 out of 5 stars A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Would Have Been Proud.......2000-12-29

This album is pure joy. The singing and playing in general is superb, while the harmonies on 'Amber Tresses' are out of this world. Ginny and Kay have made an interesting selection of Carter Family songs, ranging from familiar items from the group's days with Victor, through to 'Gently Lead Me', which A.P. and Sara recorded for the small Acme label in the early 1950s, long after the original trio had disbanded. The ladies' instrumental work, too, is highly creditable, and is enhanced by the skill of 'guest' musicians Tracy Schwarz (Ginny's husband), Mike Seeger, and Amy Michels. Seeger's autoharp playing on 'I Loved You Better Than You Knew' and 'Broken Hearted Lover' gives these tracks a very distinctive flavor. The overall sound is wonderfully clear and crisp, thanks to expert engineering and mixing work. This is a soothing and relaxing album with no hi-tech electronic gimmickry. Just good, old fashioned, high quality musicianship. A real listening pleasure.

I was so happy to hear that Ginny and Kay were getting back together to do an album. This is the best harmony singing recording that I have heard in ages. Thanks a million!

This is a hard collection of music to find. I was lucky to come across it. It gives you an introduction to the very start of the real old good country music. It is an excellent collection of the great artists that started this music. I would recommend it to everyone. It shows the different many styles of older and great country music. It should for sure be in everyones collections.
