"All my life they told me 'you're pretty good for a girl,'" Rhonda Vincent sings on this album's title track--a sly dig at the notoriously patriarchal culture of bluegrass, and at critics who qualify her as a "female bluegrass singer." But like Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton (who adds harmony vocals to the rocking "Heartbreaker's Alibi"), Vincent is one of the elite artists in the genre--period. She's got the awards and Grammy nominations to prove it, but mostly she has her voice--a flawless, instantly recognizable instrument that releases all of the emotion from durable gospel standards like Roy Acuff's "Precious Jewel" and the more contemporary-styled "Forever Ain't That Long Anymore." And she's got her band, the Rage, who rip through train songs like "Rhythm of the Wheels" or instrumentals like "Ashes of Mt. Augustine," which serves to remind us what a hot mandolinist she can be. Along with the archetypal bluegrass themes of home, death, and country, Vincent also has current conflicts on her mind. She covers Byron Hill and Mike Dekle's "Till They Come Home," which captures the impact of war on military families, walking the line between patriotism and unquestioning nationalism. On "God Bless the Soldier," however, she crosses that line with a strained analogy between Christian and military sacrifice. But her sentiments are nothing if not genuine--and she's got the vocal and instrumental chops to bring those emotions all he way home. --Roy Kasten

1 out of 5 stars Gets on my nerves.......2007-04-29

After about three songs this album gets on my nerves...big time! What the hell is this...all of the songs sound the same. Try Dale Ann Bradley and Claire Lynch, their blue grass albums are not annoying like this one.

5 out of 5 stars All American Bluegrass Girl.......2007-03-09

Ms. Vincent is a credit to bluegrass. Every collection needs to include this CD, as it will warm your heart with its soul, and stimulate your appreciation for the quality of the music.

5 out of 5 stars All American Girl.......2007-02-18

I know Rhonda personally, and what you see is what you get.
She is a real star and a nice person to meet.
She was in music a long time before the rest of the country
knew her, but we in the Iowa, Illinois, Missouri area have
known Rhonda for a long time, and she is real!

5 out of 5 stars Rhonda is Awesome!.......2007-01-04

Rhonda Vincent's latest is absolutely impeccable. It's a fabulous collection of her fantastic songwriting and musicianship! God Bless Her in the New Year!

5 out of 5 stars Good intro to Rhonda.......2006-11-01

This CD is a good intro to all of the best of Rhonda Vincent. Toe-tapping, soothing, gospel, instrumental - all the best elements of her bluegrass are on it. Sure to be an impulse purchase after you hear the track samples above.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful.......2007-02-04

Did not sound at all like the original, I have old 45rpms of these and believe me, do not waste your money if you know anything at all about Bobby Bare's singing. This CD sounded like it was recorded from some practice session of a Bobby Bare wantabe.

3 out of 5 stars It's Better Than No Bare at All, I Guess.......2004-10-23

I recall a pair of sisters, lovely girls without dates, playing "Shame on Me" over and over on the jukebox, but Mr. Bare has never emphasized his 1962 successes (including a much underrated "To Whom It May Concern"). He was playing a small country bar in Chicago just two years later when I saw him doing those songs, medley style, including "Dear Wastebasket" and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall in Love Today". Not long afterwards came "Detroit City" and he was in the big time. Pity that all of the songs here couldn't be the originals (like "To Whom it May Concern"). Go for the CD that has those originals if you want to be stirred by memories. This isn't it.

1 out of 5 stars Another Rerecording.......2003-02-20

Bobby's voice as with all others has lost the range he used to demonstrate. This is not the worst case of a "re-do" I have had the displeasure of hearing, but it still is far short of the original offerings of Bobby during the 60's. As a courtesy to all involved, Be aware these are not all of his original recordings. Buyer Beware!!

5 out of 5 stars Bare and Friends.......2000-04-08

Has anyone ever heard of this album? To my understanding, its available only on vinyl. The song in particular i'm looking for is "THE SINNER'S PRAYER". This was one of the best albums ever put out by this artist, and I can't find even the title anyplace. Its like it vanished from existence!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

5 out of 5 stars Music to travel Route 66.......2007-06-27

This CD really set the tone for our trip from Tulsa, OK to Santa Monica. We played it the first thing every morning and can't tell you how much it added to the trip. Great CD to get you "in the mood"

3 out of 5 stars Dusty Chaps-not "original" Capitol Records version!.......2004-11-01

I love the Dusty Chaps recording for Capitol Records entitled "Honky Tonk Music". The track "don't haul bricks (on route 66)" is a real highpoint of that fine LP, but, sadly, the recording on the Route 66 compiliation is not the original album version that I was familar with.
It is a complete shame that someone hasn't already released the Dusty Chaps album onto CD. It rivals anything by Commander Cody or the New Riders.

5 out of 5 stars King of Anthologies Strikes Again!.......2004-06-26

Austin Super Producer David Sanger [NOT the New York Times reporter] has acquired a reputation as King of the Anthologies, because of his output of quality work in that type album. This is the first of two collections Sanger has produced honoring The Great American Highway [and as drummer for traveling band Asleep At the Wheel, Sanger knows highways!] The first two cuts are obligatory: the theme from the long-ago TV series "Route 66" and the song of that title, as sung by its composer, the late Bobby Troup. The rest of this one is a skilled, imaginative blend of songs recorded especially for this collection and catalog tunes unearthed in memory or research, including the only known CD availability of the '70s alt.country forerunner, The Dusty Chaps, with a drug-smuggling warning, "Don't Haul Bricks on 66." This great album tells a story or two (the Road and our fascination with it) and sounds terrific at the same time! A class AAA effort.

4 out of 5 stars Dusty Chaps: Tucson Home Town Heros!!!.......2003-01-07

Any compilation that includes a Dusty Chaps track is automatically worth at least 4 stars! The Chaps were songwriter George Hawke's showcase band in the late 70's and early 80's. In their element, a grimy beer joint attached to an old motel down on the Benson Highway, they kicked butt. "Don't Haul Bricks" may not be their greatest track, but its very worthy and makes this album a must for me, as their various albums are completely unobtainable.

4 out of 5 stars A gateway to Jason Eklund.......2002-11-19

Jason Eklund was introduced to me through this cd. He is truly a great songwriter and I encourage those who liked his track to buy all of his cd's. He is American music!

      Album Description

The jaunty Gene DePaul score for the musical play "Lil' Abner" based on the comic strip by Al Capp is heard instrumentally - and it's quite a show! "Broadway Bouquet" from 1965 is an important part of the famed Faith "string" album series - perhaps the pinnacle of his rich string sound that spanned gorgeous melodies and counterlines across sections of the large orchestra. (Bill Halvorsen)

      Album Description

Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These two reissues from Collectables on 1 CD were originally released in 1965. 24 tracks. 2003.

      3 out of 5 stars It's not stereo.......2005-01-10

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

5 out of 5 stars classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not the Satelllites' best.......2004-07-05

The Georgia Satellites' debut album was a surprise hit, rising to the top 5 and spawning the Billboard #2 single "Keep Your Hands To Yourself", but this 1988 follow-up went largely uinnoticed, peaking at #77 before sinking like a stone.
And that's a shame, because there is some real feel-good rock n' roll here...raw, gritty hard rock a la Stones, and highlighted by the sleazy boogie of "Mon Cheri", and a tremendous high-octane cover of Ringo Starr's "Don't Pass Me By".

But it must be said that "Open All Night" doesn't match the Satellites' debut album...most of the 11 songs are good, but too few of them are great. Dedicated Satellites fans will want it anyway, and it is certainly not a bad record, but more casual listeners will be much better served by the excellent career overview "Let It Rock - Best Of The Georgia Satellites".

3 1/4 stars for this one. Good enough, but not a necessary purchase when such a fine compilation is available.
