Editorial Reviews
Rob Dixon "Through Her Eyes" SouthlandRecords.com THIS IS FILLED WITH SMOOTH, DEEP-VOICED COUNTRY LOVE SONGS AND LOST LOVE SONGS, JUST RIGHT FOR SLOW DANCING WITH SOMEBODY WARM. There's not a wrong note in this album. Dixon's third in the past 20 years or so. It's radio friendly, and if it were on a major label with a lot of clout and deep pockets, it would probably be getting more airplay on middle of the road country stations. Dixon grew up in Maryland, had some local success and moved to Nashville in 1977. He had a stint as lead guitarist / frontman in George Jones' band, and moved to Fort Worth to sing in the Billy Bob's Texas house band. He's been playing the Texas circuit since. He wrote all eleven songs on this one, including a co-write with Shannon Watkins of what may be the album's best track. "If You Didn't Feel So Good". His lyrics come from the heart and the supporting music is solid if not spectacular.

The finest British oratorio tenor.......2005-01-14
On this CD he is in command of every emotional nuance of the recitative. 'Deeper and deeper still' from Jephtha is a good example of the emotional range. His diction is perfect and the Handelian runs are effortless.
He had an amazingly wide range, extending from a baritonal quality in the lower registers to the effortless high notes in the arias from 'Acis and Galatea'.
He also sings some standard operatic arias on the CD. All these are sung in English and he observes every expression mark to the letter.
I can thoroughly recommend this CD to potential buyers.

Not brilliant, but then it is a single - more like 3.5 stars.......2002-04-25
The actual song Through Her Eyes is alright but not brilliant. I don't like pop sounding stuff much (being a metalhead and all) but I did like Another Day on Images and Words. Give it a good listen and you'll appreciate it. Can't see the point in wasting a track by having 2 versions of the song though, considering that one is simply the other with extra bits added on. What I don't get is that this song is not really representative of what the band is about. I mean, I'd rather listen to their pop music than most of the stuff that's out there, but if you think this single is what Dream Theatre are about then no, they're not. And if you only like strictly metal you'll hate this song.
The live songs are good and the band are incredibly tight musically. However, LaBrie sounds [terrible]. He continually misses notes, sings off key, cannot reach the heights he could on the album, sounds tired and his voice lacks the edge it has in the studio. That said, the actual music is very well performed.
Home is pretty good. For a 14 minute long song it doesn't seem to do as much as I'd hoped but it is good.
However, it is the medley, When Images And Words Unite, that is worth the (pretty small) price alone. Pull Me Under (where Mike Portnoy doubles his drum speed in places), Under A Glass Moon, A Fortune In Lies, Only A Matter Of Time and Take The Time are squished into one 16 minute long headbanging track. Absolutely superb.
All in all, it doesn't offer as much as it could, but it is a single not an album and if you can't afford to splash out on the live album but would like to hear the band live, then this is probably worth it.

Scene's "Through Her Eyes".......2000-08-04
It's main drawback is a lack of any new music. I was hoping that a single might produce a few non-"Scenes From A Memory" based b-sides. I'm curious to hear what else Jordan Rudess will contribute to the band. Alas, what we get are two versions of "Through Her Eyes." One is practically identical to the album version, just minus the opening female vocals. The second includes a nice, but rather out-of-place saxaphone solo by Spyro Gyro's Jay Beckstein.
Another question I have is, of all the songs off of "Scenes From A Memory," why make this one the single? "Through Her Eyes" is far from one of the album's leading tracks. "Fatal Tragedy" and the epic "Home" seem to be two more likely candidates.
Our other offerings are two live tracks from the first leg of the Metropolis 2000 tour. The first is the aforementioned "Home." "Home" is the centerpiece of "Scenes" and easily one of DT's best works. The live version, however, leaves something to be offered. To keep with the album's sound of the song, played live "Home" is slowed down, and it feels it. The tempo is sluggish and feels like your just plodding along through it.
The best and only reason to own this is for "When Images and Word Unite." A medley of five songs from the first two Dream Theater albums. Easily, more enjoyable of a romp than "Home" and it's nice to hear James LaBrie's verison of old tracks.
If you're bent on owning all of Dream Theater's works, pick this up. Otherwise, stick with "Scenes From A Memory" and see DT live. It will make up for not buying it.

Amazon.com essential recording
Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:

Stereotypical disgrace.......2006-04-26
More troubling is the fake Yiddish accent put on by the characters that give it an historical distortion, but also seems almost anit-semetic in its portrayal of whiny, negative women who are based on every stereotype available.
The writers obviously have no sense of Jewish history and no fear of appearing foolish in their attempt to identify real events.
Oy--this is a stereotypical disgrace.
