5 out of 5 stars Vanessa.......2007-05-06

Vanessa Williams has long been one of my favorite singers and entertainers out there and this compilation is a great example why. Featuring the now-classic pop ballad "Save The Best For Last" and the Oscar-winning "Colors Of The Wind" (which is my personal favorite on the album), among other hits, the album is an absolute winner. As for Vanessa herself, you just can't help but be captivated by her sheer beauty and talent (currently co-starring on "Betty"), I simply adore this woman. After all the turmoil she had to go through in the beginning of her career, she just started from scratch all over again and she did it in such an honorable way. She's a true role model - for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection @}->---.......2006-02-11

I really like Vanessa Williams and over the years she has had a couple of big songs here and there. Some of the ones on this cd were never huge hits, but to her fans, we know them well. My personal favourites here are Betcha Never (a bit latin-ish and fun), Sweetest Days and Save The Best For Last. That song is now a bit of an anthem. She doesn't have the most powerful voice in the world, but it's pretty and her music is really beautiful. Maybe for fans only. I just wished she'd really come back with some new big hits.

3 out of 5 stars Some very good, some less so.......2005-09-22

This CD has three great songs: Love Is, Save the Best for last, and Dreamin'. The rest of the songs are just OK. This is why it just doesn't pay to buy CD's. I can't recommend purchasing the whole CD just for three songs.

2 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2005-08-18

I bought this CD in order to get a few of the "big hits," and that's what I got--no more, no less, as most of the other songs are just so-so.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!.......2005-08-10

I grew up during the 80s and I am a big fan, so I enjoyed each song in this CD

5 out of 5 stars old songs, same issues.......2007-07-16

I thought I had heard it all, Chad Mitchell that is, but several of the songs on this recording where new to me. I have several Mitchell Trio LP's but I must have missed one when I bought them new in the 60's.

5 out of 5 stars Instant Nostalgia Trip ..........2007-04-11

This CD was exactly what I was looking for, as it contained several of my favorite songs that do not appear on any of the other of the Trio's CDs that I own. I was fortunate to see them "live" during my college's Homecoming weekend in 1962 or '63, so it was an instant nostalgia trip for me. Best of the best -- "The Marvelous Toy", "Bonny Streets of Fyve-io", "Four Strong Winds", and "The Banks of Sicily" brought back some poignant memories. Other goodies were "I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound" and the Draft Dodger Rag". The Vietnam War was raging at the time and starting to become very unpopular on campus, so it brought the entire fieldhouse to its feet, laughing and applauding. I still LOL when I listen to it. Two songs on this Disk that touched me were "Cherry Tree Carol" and "She Loves You". The latter is a down-tempo rendition of the Beatles hit, presented more like a love song than the Beatles version and is quite enchanting. I highly recommend this CD to any of the Trio's fans.

5 out of 5 stars A great folk collection.......2003-11-27

My first exposure to this great, under-appreciated group was hearing "Lizzie Borden" on the Dr Demento radio program. I then made a point of searching out the album on which that song appeared. When I finally found it and listened to the rest, I was hooked. I eventually obtained all the Kapp albums but never heard any of the Mercury recordings until this collection came out. What a gem! This quickly became one of the most played CD's in my collection. Their voices blend so beautifully, it's like they were born to make music together. I disagree with another reviewer who says they were a cut below the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary. These guys are every bit as good, if not better in some ways. And the musicians backing them were among the best in the business. I find it difficult to understand why they never really enjoyed the popularity and fame that other folk artists achieved.
This collection is a delightful blend of their whimsical pieces (Dubarry, Stewball, a Dying Business), their political songs (Barry's Boys, Friendly Liberal Neighborhood KKK, What Did You Learn in School) and their more touching, sentimental songs (Marvelous Toy, Four Strong Winds, In the Summer of His Years). I see now they have released the full albums from which some of these songs were taken. You can bet they'll be on my Christmas list this year.

5 out of 5 stars A solid compliation of the Chad Mitchell Trio's later years.......2003-07-30

The Chad Mitchell Trio began recording with Mercury Records in 1963, after releasing their first four albums on Kapp Records (the best of which was their live album, "The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End"). The group recorded six albums for Mercury, the last two of which saw Chad Mitchell leaving the group and being replaced by a young John Denver (Mike Kobluk and Joe Frazier were the other members). As folk singers the Chad Mitchell Trio was a notch below the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary, which is still pretty good. Besides, these guys covered "Blowin' in the Wind" first; the problem was their label delayed releasing it and PP&M beat them to the punch, which is why they jumped to Mercury.

This collection features 27 tracks, including songs written by Tom Paxton ("The Marvelous Toy") Phil Ochs ("That's the Way It's Gonna Be"), and even Lennon & McCartney ("She Loves You"). However, while they offer up the same sort of cheerful harmonies that characterized popular folk music in the Sixties, the Chad Mitchell Trio tended to more in the forefront of providing songs that were political and/or satirical in nature. "Barry's Boys" is about 1964 Republican Presidential nominee Barry Goldwater, "Alma Mater" is about the integration of college campuses, while "Your Friendly Liberal Neighborhood Ku Klux Klan" and "The Draft Dodger Rag" need no further explanation. Only seven of these tracks feature John Denver, but he wrote three of the songs, including "For Bobbi."

My own quibble with the selections is that it does not include the group's cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man," on which Denver sang the lead (how can you pass up the one example out there of "Denver does Dylan"?). For the first half of the music career of the Chad Mitchell Trio there is a Knapp collection from 1963 called "The Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio," while this album, "The Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio: The Mercury Years" more than adequately covers the second half.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not a great collection.......2003-05-28

The Chad Mitchell Trio (CMT) was far and away the best folk group of the 60's, and being trained as classical singers probably had a lot to do with that. Like many of their peers, the members of CMT (Chad Mitchell, Joe Frazier and Mike Kobluk) met in college, but despite their young ages, their arrangements and harmonies are the most stylized and professional of all the artists of that era, outclassing fellow folk groups such as The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary by an extremely wide margin.

While their first three albums on the Kapp label are good, they were just appetizers for what was to come. The CMT really came into their own when they moved to Mercury, greatly expanding their range, which this collection covers fairly well. Some wonderful examples of this incredible part of their career include "Four Strong Winds", "African Song", and "Bonny Streets of Fyve-IO", and biting satires like "Barry's Boys", "Alma Mater" and "Your Friendly Liberal Neighborhood Ku-Klux-Klan" are good but sound somewhat dated today.

Unfortunately, this CD is missing several outstanding tracks from the Mercury albums, particularly the many traditional folk, gospel and blues tunes they recorded (like "Tell Old Bill"). It's great to see "Marvelous Toy" and "Draft Dodger Rag" here, but other classics such as "The Last Thing On My Mind" and "The Hip Song" are sorely missed. Even when Chad Mitchell left the group to pursue a solo career in 1966, the group soldiered on with John Denver, who although he could never replace Chad, still managed to create stunning efforts with the group. Their version of The Beatles' "She Loves You" is a prime example, and the best cover of that song I've ever heard!

The Kapp records have all been re-released on CD, but unfortunately the ones from Mercury have not, which is most unfair. If you're not familiar with any of the CMT's catalogue, either "best of" collection is a good place to start (see also The CMT Collection: Original Kapp Recordings), but I would highly recommend spending some time in used record shops looking for copies of the Mercury LP's. You'll have to dust off that phonograph that's been sitting in your closet for years of course, but it's well worth the effort.

Although the 2 CD set Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years starts with the Scorpions' fifth studio album Lovedrive, it effectively traces and relives most of the German outfit's development from buzz band to rock stars. Beginning with their Billboard debut Lovedrive, which featured "Loving You Sunday Morning" and "Holiday" (contained here), the first disc follows the band through the platinum success of Blackout and the mind-blowing popularity of Love at First Sting. Included are the guitar-buzzing, pulse-pounding cuts "The Zoo," "No One Like You," "Rock You Like a Hurricane," and "Still Loving You." But with the second disc, Deadly Sting unabashedly captures a star-dazed band on the way down. Four cuts from the sappy, mediocre Savage Amusement are included, as well as numbers from the equally unimpressive Crazy World and the comeback-of-sorts Face the Heat. Although only the first CD is essential, it's the entire package that reveals the complete picture. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars They Still Sting After All These Years.......2007-03-17

I was never a huge Scorpions fan when I was growing up. I was familiar with all of their radio releases, but not much else. When "Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years" was released, I decided that it would be worth the price to gather up the bulk of the Scorpions' most popular tunes. I actually bought this double disc set when it was originally released (well in the wake of the Grunge revolution that killed 80's hard rock and hair metal). The album is definitely worth your consideration if you enjoy hair and hard rock bands from the 80's/early 90's.

Most people will be able to recognize songs like "Wind of Change," the anthemic "Rock You Like A Hurricane," "No One Like You," and "Still Loving You." A few more, like myself, can recall songs like "The Zoo" and "Tease Me, Please Me." One really nice treat on this album is "I Can't Explain," from the "Make A Difference: Stairway To Heaven/Highway To Hell" album. It's the Scorpions' take on The Who's popular tune. Also included are gems like "Big City Nights" and "Loving You Sunday Morning."

As a whole, this is the perfect collection for casual fans like myself. I found quite a few songs on here that I was unaware of and really enjoyed them. I can't speak for the diehard fans, but I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to have a sizeable portion of Scorpions tunes without having to muddle through each and every album out there.

5 out of 5 stars this one has all your favorites.......2006-04-17

It has been really hard to find a cd that has ALL of the really great songs by The Scorpions. This is it. It will really rock you like a hurricane.

2 out of 5 stars Great Liner Notes, Packaging, Good Track Selection, Pity about the Sound Quality!.......2005-09-22

On the face of it, except that the Mercury years would exclude any Michael Schenker and/or Uli Roth contributions, this would probably be the best Scorpions compilation out there. The cd liner notes are excellent, the overall packaging is quite good and the track selections cover a very representative amount of their material to date.

Unfortunately, the recording isn't remastered or even mastered well for that matter. The volume levels are very low and the sound is very poor given what's out there today. I have unremastered discs that were released pre-1997 that sound a lot better than these discs do. I haven't yet heard the latest one disc offering, "Bad For Good" but given that it's released recently, perhaps the sound is mastered better over there and you're better off going for that one.

Maybe if they keep everything else and do a proper digital remastering of this, it would be worth the money. I regret getting this version for the very poor sound quality and if I could do it over, I'd probably chance it with "Bad For Good" and get truly well remastered versions of "Lovedrive" and "In Trance/Virgin Killer" and I'd have the best that the Scorpions have ever done.

And that's my recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars SCORPIONS at their very...Best!.......2005-08-21

This Double cd is an excellent and complete collection of all of the best songs by Metal band "The Scorpions".

CD1 includes 16 great Scorpions Classics such as...Holiday, The Zoo, Black-out, No-one like u, still loving you and Rock you like a Hurricane (Just to mention a few).

CD2 includes: Rhytm of love, believe in love, wind of change and many more (17 in total). I could still listen to this Mega group and remember the days when Heavy Metal ruled the music industry. Whatever happened to good all Heavy Metal by bands such as Scorpions, Ozzy, Mottley,AC/DC,Dio, etc?

This CD is a most have for any Heavy Metal music fan!
A complete compilation of one of the best bands ever...SCORPIONS!

5 out of 5 stars Scorpion's best Greatest Hits CD........2004-03-24

I actually got this CD for Christmas and this is a really good CD and I encourage that all of the Scorpions fans to buy this CD, whether you're a hardcore fan or a casual fan and beware that this CD costs about $27-$35 and if you're on a budget then I would recommend Bad For Good: The Best of the Scorpions which contains 18 songs while this CD contains 33 songs from the 1979-95 period and this is about all of the songs you need if you're a casual fan.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The only other Timi fan in the UK?.......2006-11-06

I found the review of your UK reviewer absolutely spot on. Tmi Yuro was the most underrated singer of her age, in any genre.

I wore out two copies of the original Mercury vinyl LP and was delighted when the remastered lengthened version came out.

Some say this was her weakest album and sales were not great but they never were with any of her albums and it is just beyond me why she was not a million seller with every album. Virtually no bad tracks, the most committed emotional singing, I liked the fuller orchestral sound of the Mercury album as a change, although 'Soul' is still my favourite of her albums, and indeed it was the very first album I ever bought.

And what a treat to get all the extra tracks on this compilation even though many of them do not really fit with the feel of the original album. We must not complain - it has taken long enough for her albums to appear on CD and although I agree with one reviewer that the vinyl sounds better (I still believe vinyl is more 'musical' than CD) at least I can easily transcribe to my mp3 player and listen at will.

A compulsory addition to one's collection

5 out of 5 stars There is only one !.......2005-12-02

Oh my lord there is only one and It is the GREAT TIMI YURO She is the greatest female singer that ever lived!I've heard people say she's the greatest white female soul singer, take out the word white and you'd be right. I first heard Timi when I was sixteen years old and knew then this woman could sing like no other Her voice would make an angel smile There are so many of her songs that are amazing It's hard to pick one out I have many of her albums and love every one of them she's the best, back and beyond. You can't go wrong buying her music If you're new to TIMI Start with her early recordings, If you live 100 years you'll never hear a woman with a more powerful voice Yes the little white girl could sing!!

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but buy the Original Timi Yuro first........2005-11-19

This is a very interesting collection, wildly different between the first half of the cd and the second half. From what the liner notes tell, the first 11 or 12 songs were arranged by Quincy Jones. These songs tend to be a bit somnambulent-heavily orchestrated adult contemporary ballads. My favorites among these are Johnny, My foolish heart, I'm still around. Track 13 is where the fun begins with a rowdy version of Roy Hamilton's rockabilly classic "You can have him." Track 15 is called Get out of my life, and it sounds very much like something Bert Bacharach would have written for Dionne Warwick - it's a great song and arrangement. Track 17 is Teardrops till dawn which is a slightly bombastic Phil Spector-ish production that sounds remarkably like the Shangri-La's Leader of the pack. I love it. Track #21 is the reason you should buy this cd - it is called Cuttin In. This is Timi Yuro giving a bitchy, growling R&B performance that equals Etta James at her best. This song is awesome. The final two songs are the Italian language E Poi Verra L'Autumno and Ti Credo. E Poi Verra is also an emotional, convincing and dramatic song, Ti Credo is more gentle and lovely.I once read that Dinah Washington said she could sing anything, and the reviewer said she wasn't bragging, she was telling the truth. Timi Yuro could also sing anything. This woman was a truly great talent. It's so amazing that she seems to be unknown and/or forgotten - I guess the slimy recording industry is too busy promoting their latest selection of untalented "bimbette" female singers that currently proliferate and adult contemporary screechers and shriekers like Michael Bolton. Now you ask, why didn't I give this collection 5 stars? Because it is not a perfect collection like "The Original", and I also prefer Timi's "Sings Willie Nelson". Some people hate the Willie Nelson cd because her voice is smokier and darker, but her world-weary voice was completely appropriate for the dark and sometimes depressing Willie Nelson songs. The Amazing Timi Yuro is worth buying for "I'm cuttin in" - that performance is so remarkable, and there are other worthwhile songs on this as well, but I would get the aforementioned cd's first.

5 out of 5 stars Timi Yuro at her Greatest.......2005-10-08

I went buying this CD just knowing the singles released by Timi Yuro, and a few album cuts from both ends of her Liberty records Career. Unlike what the liner notes say, I think the LP this CD was based around was a departure from her early work at Liberty. "The Amzing Timi Yuro" feels more like a jazz album, starkly removed from her Last Liberty outing "Make The World Go Away" She sings with more subtly here, which allows you to appreciate the great enunciation and passion that she bught to every note, and demonstrated she was a very versatile singer, that she did not need to belt out the song all the time to caress each note with convinction and believeabilty.

The following singles are really random, but are great nonetheless. I actually prefer her reworking of "You Can Have Him" to Dionne Warwick's (Both minor hit's during 1965) It sounds like a lost Ronettes track, with Timi starting off the song demurely, almost nonchalant and as the song progresses it seems the subject on her mind eats away at her, and the resulting anger and fury of being burned snowballs out by the end of the song. By Comparison Dionne Warwick's straight ahead rock-soul version sounds like a lost Live Vandellas Performance, not concentrationing on the lyric of the song.

Then there is the brilliant 3rd Single "Get Out of My Life" which is so sublime and the way Timi is able to stand out against one of Teddy Randazzo densest productions (well at least in Mono, you savor the lushness of his productions when they are in Stereo). Again Timi shows restraint when the sentiments are directed at another person, but when she concentrates on what she's feeling, all the emotions come pouring out..maybe too intense an emotional statement for 1965 Brit Beat and Supremes dominated top 40, like most of Teddy Randazzo's work.

I just hold a slight preference for The Royalettes Version of "Can't Stop Running Away" from their "Elegant Sounds" LP possibly because Ironically that's the version I heard first, or it is in Stereo, and in Contrast Sheila Ross is better able to convey the feeling of claustrophobia and running away from a break-up a little better.Timi Yuro doesn't seem like a woman that would run away, she would, like on the A-side, she'd confront it or dismiss it with the confidence she portrayed on record.

Possibly my favorite CD purchase this year....

5 out of 5 stars WHY ARE SOME TRACKS NOT INCLUDED.......2005-10-06

Timi only recorded one album with Mercury, which is here and also includes most of the Mercury singles. Unfortunately there are some tracks not included, and I don't understand why.
This album is the most "adult" set of recordings she ever made, and they will never date. Her voice is sheer perfection, and Tim wrings every ounce of emotion she has on each one. My own personal favourite is "All I Need Is You", but they are all gems.
She was a terrific singer, and to me outshone Striesand and Franklin and all the other female singers. I think she suffered from very bad promotion and management, as she should have been a huge star.
I have every record she made, some are signed by her, which I treasure. I also now have almost everything she did on cd, which saves me from playing my treasured vinyl which I will never part with.
I also have fan club material which I have kept from the sixties, plus a couple of letters she wrote to me. The last one was very sad, as she was telling me that she had just recorded what she called "the last thing I can ever offer to you", which was her superb album with Willie Nelson. She knew she would never record again due to her wicked cancer, which eventually took her from us. She is so very sadly missed, not only as a lovely little lady, but also as possibly one of the greatest white soul singers who ever lived.
Why she never reached the top I just don't know as she certainly deserved to be there.... Mike Rossiter

Product Description

In a perfect world, which this clearly isn't, Martin Briley would be a household name, putting his album out every 18 months or so to the delight of his several hundred thousand fans (we would have said millions, but we didn't want to be greedy). Instead, he practices his songwriting craft in a tiny home studio on behalf of others, and most of the recordings he makes these days are demos heard only by other artists and their managers. Now that's not exactly digging ditches, so don't cry for him, Argentina. But in the early Eighties, there was a perfect moment when public taste intersected with a tasteful musician for an MTV-driven Top Fifteen hit called "Salt In My Tears." Only the last two of Martin's albums have ever had a legitimate CD release, and they routinely fetch upwards of $150 on eBay (when you can get them). Our release contains every track from all three of his albums, PLUS six previously unreleased tracks unavailable anywhere else! All of them were painstakingly remastered in 2004, so they sound as clear and crisp as the day they were first laid down. Add to that extensive notes by noted rock critic Scott Schinder and complete lyrics by Briley Himself, and you have a deluxe snapshot of a very brief and fruitful period of a long and successful career.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Melodic Rock with great lyrics - This is simply essential, long awaited and very much appreciated........2006-05-28

Martin Briley, is for those who do not know, one of the greatest rock song writers of all time. His songs are filled with aspects of real life that many song writers would rather avoid.(For those of you thinking: "Why have I never heard of him?" Well in case you havn't worked it out yet, most great artists don't get to see the light of the recording industry way, thanks to there versions of what we should listen too. BUT, Martin has been writing songs for illedged greats like Paul McCartney, Celine Dion and many others for years, he's a guy who really knows his stuff peoples), Musically these peices are superb. Catchy peices will blow you away and the way the music works with Martin's almost Phil Collins like(at times, it's unique but this is just a quick way of explaining it(It's better than Phils(OK biased fan opinion maybe)), voice is simply magic. Having only ever heard "One Night With A Stranger", and having wanted to hear the other two albums for A VERY LONG TIME, you simply couldn't obtain them without paying a fortune on auction sites like ebay for example. Now here they all are, large as life and as fresh as ever. It was worth the wait too, might I tell you. I'd be surprised if almost anyone couldn't get something great out of all these great peices. Some highly recommended peices on the set are: "The Man I Feel", I Don't Feel Better", "She's So Flexible", "Just A Mile Away From Here", "Dangerous Moments", "Before The Party Ends". That's two of my favourite tracks from each album and you'll just have to buy the set and have a listen to find out which albums there off, if you don't already know.(If you enjoy melodic rock, this set will give you spine tingling dance of joy titilation).

In this single set, you get all three of Martin's Mercury days studio albumns and to top it all off, six great extra demo tracks recorded around these times also.

If your a Briley fan and havn't been able to find these albumns, for goodness sake grab this set as sadly there's only 3000 copies world wide and who knows how long it will take for us to see another release.

Brilliant and absolutely essential for anyone who wants to hear how real song writing and melodic rock music goes together.

Once again, many thanks Martin for making this collection possible, it's a fans dream come true.

Though barely past 40 on this disc, Kathy Mattea, best known for sentimental hits like "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" and "Where've You Been," has obviously been feeling some of the pangs of midlife. Themes of loss, atonement, and spiritual reckoning echo through 2000's The Innocent Years, her first album in three years and one of her very best ever. Mattea possesses a warm, magnificently expressive alto that has suffered comparisons (both fair and unfair) to Canadian singer Anne Murray's amiable purr. Yet Mattea has seldom sounded so impassioned, inspired, and delightfully contemporary as she does on this exquisite song collection. The title tune reaches far beyond poignant nostalgia and captures a painful inner yearning for spiritual rejuvenation and the rebirth of innocence. Throughout Mattea translates her spiritual and emotional quest into a deeply satisfying journey for her listeners as well. --Bob Allen

    5 out of 5 stars One of Kathy's BEST.......2002-01-04

I'm not going to review each cut on this collection. Since I've found this, it's been on my CD player just about everyday. I'd like to point out which track is my favorite, but I can't because each one has touched me in its own way. They're thoughful, introspective, intelligent, and very well crafted. They're songs that I wished I'd written. I've been a fan of Kathy's pretty much since her beginnings, but I feel that this is the most incredible collection of songs she's put out to date. And I think that her voice has never been sweeter. Sure, it's no longer "mainstream country", but she's scored a major hit with me with this CD. (Country radio plays such trivial stuff now anyway.....the really exceptional songs never make it on the air.) I can see this being one of my absolute favorites for many, many moons. It should be in everyone's collection.

1 out of 5 stars Great voice - shame about the songs.......2001-04-30

I think Mattea's "Love Travels" CD is excellent - a selection of great songs - pity she couldn't repeat the trick on "Innocent Years". Instead she puts her money on a bunch of third rate no hopers out of the Nashville Hit Factory stable. The lyrics are crass, tired, sentimental cliches and the melodies are completely forgettable. Even the musicians seem uninspired. It sounds a bit like a poor imitation of Mary Chapin Carpenter (many of the same backing band members). Mattea's own composition "Innocent Years" is probably the best of a bad bunch with the gospel flavoured "Why Can't We" a close second. The rest are non-runners. I've tried to listen to it again several times but each time I have to skip to the next track. What a waste of a great voice. Don't waste your money - buy Erica Wheeler, Cheryl Wheeler, Gretchen Peters, Carrie Newcomer ...........

4 out of 5 stars Reflections and Truths After the Innocence.......2000-12-10

In what some say may be her last release aimed at a commercial country audience, Mattea emphasizes her reflective side, often trying to cut through the noise of contemporary life. On the title track, she looks back at her youth, wanting "To see my face at 16 again/When the boy down the street was my best friend." The quasi-spiritual "Why Can't We" takes dead aim at how overemphasis on possessions can get in the way of happiness: "People with nothing/Can hold onto something/If they can be happy/Why can't we." She bullseyes the germ of both the spark of a relationship ("Out of the Blue") and the depth of commitment ("That's the Deal"). Combine these songs with Mattea's friendly, powerful alto that makes you feel you've known her all your life, and the result is a special, moving album that finds its way into the CD player with frequency. Mattea ends on a lively note with the bonus track "BFD," an exercise in abbreviations and somewhat mature humor.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2000-10-17

In listening to this album, I am finally sure what good, true, love for music is. Kathy Mattea has shown through these songs that she has an amazing idea of love and spirituality. I have found this album to be both inspiring and full of thought inhancing material. I urge anyone who loves beautiful voices and amazing songs to buy this album.

        5 out of 5 stars An early 70's gem.......2006-08-12

Ron's two-star review couldn't be further off the mark. It's the ballads that are the stunning highlights of this album as well as Don's Mercury label follow-up 'Hot Blood.'

'I Was Checkin' Out She Was Checkin' In' is one of the all-time classic cheatin' soul songs. How many people thought it was the Rolling Stones hitting an unexpected high when they first heard this on the radio? (Mick Jagger owes an unpayable debt to Don Covay for usurping his vocal sound and style). 'Leave Him' simmers for eight wonderful minutes, but it has to be 'Somebody's Been Enjoying My Home' that floors the Soul pathos-o-meter into the red... Don itemizes all the evidence of another man in his abode culminating with, "He even had the nerve to rob my Frigidaire. What made me so mad he drank my last six-pack of beer. Lord!"

A great album. And the funky stuff is pretty good too.

2 out of 5 stars More Like Mediocredude.......2005-05-25

It's not all bad, but most of it is. The first two cuts are very promising and funky. They really bring a whole new dance element to Don's music that wasn't present before. But once he tries to do a ballad, the album starts to fall apart. "I Was Checking Out" is a truly immature look at adultary that is downright grating. I don't know if he was trying to be funny or ironic, I just know that it does not work. The next track he tries to return to funk, but with only marginal results. His cover of Memphis is interesting, but the song is so tired, even his completely new approach can't really help it. "The Pinch Hitters" is slightly entertaining until you realize it is the exact same song as "Overtime Man." "Somebody's Been Enjoying My Home" is also a replicate, only this time of the lousy "Checking Out."

Now, for a monument to self-indulgence, 8 minutes of "Leave Him." I don't how anyone can listen to this entire song more than once or twice. Then, he tries to do a cover of "Money." He uses a music style similar to The Wiz here, but again, the song is just too overcovered. Finally, the album ends on a decent, yet generic soul ballad. In a great marketing move, RPM has put half the tracks from the second Jefferson Lemon Blues Band album, "Different Strokes" on here. The other half of the tracks will be attached to a reissue of Don's album "Hot Blood." I had high hopes for this section because I'd read good reviews of "House of Blue Light. "Sweet Thing" is absolutely great, classic Don Covay. "Shoes" and "Hitching A Ride" are decent, but lean more toward Don's new funk sound. They are nothing like the raw blues found on "House of Blue Light," however. I loved Mercy/Seesaw and after receiving House of Blue Light today, I am liking that album, too. Superdude sounds like a weak comeback album in comparison. It just sounds childish.
