Shania Twain--recluse, happily married, mother of one--has sold more than 40 million albums with flirty, hook-laden, beat-heavy, country-tinged pop that has all the subtlety of a musical wet T-shirt contest, yet is as irresistible as Swiss chocolate and Pringles. There are a few heartfelt, moon-in-June love ballads on this generous and long-awaited 20-song collection, which includes three new songs along with all the predictable chart-toppers and near-chart-toppers. But it's the mostly nonstop, uptempo booty-shakers--too often with garish overproduction and vapid lyrics--that, for the unconverted, tend to run together after a while. No doubt, this relentlessly upbeat retrospective will keep Twain's millions of fans jumping up and down on their sofas. --Bob AllenRecommended Contemporary Crossover

The come-from-nowhere success of Shania Twain's previous album, The Woman in Me, proved that the world was ready for a combination of traditional instruments, girl-power themes, and dance-pop dynamics. Whether Twain is a modern-day Dolly Parton or a country music Spice Girl is a matter of perspective. But with her third album, she accentuates the sing-along choruses and simple dance rhythms while downplaying the country elements. As a pop move, it works wonderfully for her, earning Twain a valued spot on MTV, VH-1, and pop radio. The emphasis is on fun rather than depth, of course. But no one can accuse her of being stingy: she and her Svengali-like producer/husband, slick-rock king Robert "Mutt" Lange (Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC), load down the album with 16 songs, all of them quite radio-friendly. --Michael McCallCustomer Reviews:

At the very top of her game!.......2006-10-21
I must admit I don't like what Shania Twain's later music evolved into nearly as much as this older stuff. I think in this album she was more driven by her own inner creativity and less by mass marketing concerns.
The ballads here are heartfelt and the faster songs convey an enthusiasm for life and youthful exuberance. While Shania is certainly sexy with a lot of charisma, she is also an incredible performer and worthy of her reputation. I can still remember the first time I heard her on THE WOMAN IN ME. I still love this album as well.
If you are going to own one or two Shania Twain albums and not get any others, I recommend that this is one of the two to buy. If you don't like the earlier country sound, try her newer stuff. However, I think this older material is more representative of where her heart truly lies and for me it comes across lound and clear through the speakers.
This could be a greatest hits CD.......2006-08-08

Give Shania Twain points for honesty. Up!, her first new release in five years, offers both pop and country versions of the same 19 songs, the red disc boasting pop renditions while the green proffers country. It's a smart idea, since it allows Twain the freedom to dress a song in whatever arrangements and instrumentation she pleases--without setting herself up for criticism as to whether Canada's Queen of the Bare Midriff spat on the Holy Grail of Nashville. Often, the only difference is the substitution of pedal steel, fiddle, and banjo for strings, guitars, and keyboards. In these situations, where she employs the same riffs and melodic strains, the country version usually pales in comparison; however, the green disc wins on those songs where the subject matter hits closer to home, especially the unwed mother tune "I Ain't Goin' Down." Twain was never truly a country singer--she was merely marketed that way--and her red disc particularly pleases, while making no excuses. She is what she is: a perky lounge singer with a calculatedly honeyed voice, a penchant for inane lyrics--often about absolutely nothing--and, in tandem with her husband, Mutt Lange, a masterful command of rhythm, production, and mood. ("I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" is confection perfection.) There's something oddly hypnotic about much of this project, and it may be simply hearing what Shania can do when she abandons the pretense of being a country singer and concentrates on music. Call this a guilty pleasure--pop, country, or somewhere in between. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

Shania Twain comes full circle on this album, cowriting 11 out of 12 cuts and proving that she can do more than sing. Once again she crosses over into pop-rock territory with this multiplatinum affair, bringing legions of new fans into the country camp. Peppered with hits such as "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" and "Any Man of Mine," Twain's sophomore effort features crisp and clear vocals and country-flavored pop arrangements. Husband and cowriter "Mutt" Lange, known for his production work with hard hitters Def Leppard, has produced a fresh sound for country, enhancing the traditional with a more gritty, gutsy sound; even the more delicate tunes resemble those power-pop tunes from the 1980s. This is music for all occasions: danceable, romantic, and powerful. --Paula GhergiaCustomer Reviews:
Shania Twain at her absolute best, great songs too!.......2006-10-21
Spunkiest Cowgirl of Any County.......2006-08-19
Her tenderness is done with finesse on her opener, "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore)," but is even bettered on "Raining on Our Love" Then she really kicks it into gear with a fun gallop on "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under," "You Win My Love," and "No One Needs to Know". But, if these numbers don't win you over, her smash hit, "If You're Not in It for Love (I'm Outta Here)" is worth the price of the CD. With vocals that ably fill the ebb and flow of the spunkiest country song--possibly ever conceived--the band actually fills up in a big way what even her voice can't even do. (Her back-up band is particularly accomplished on this album.)
There isn't a bad song on 'Woman in Me,' and, while 'Come on Over' is the favorite commercially (and maybe even more entertaining) 'The Woman in Me' showcases women's country where no one has tread before.
She started with Country, now it's pure (heavy) POP.......2006-04-24
although it was a #1 worldwide smash, I didn't like it except
for some ballads. I thought..is this Country? And if it is so
what happended to Country music during the 90's? The only thing
left on most songs is the steel guitar but the rest are screaming
electric guitars + lots of other noises. It seems like heavy
rock to me compared to Country music from the 60's through the
80's. With the second try of a Shania Twain record it was again
a flop. "Up" has some nice ballads but out of 19 songs only 3
or 4 are bearable. Since 1997 Shania Twain cannot be considered
a Country artist nor a crossover artist. It's pure Pop.
My last try, however, was this "Woman in me" because all the
reviews said it was more country like. This is true. Shania
Twain WAS Country during the first half of the 90's. On this
CD at least 8 out of 12 are real nice. Instead of buying new
material I will go backwards and get the first Shania's records.
Brilliant!!!.......2006-03-31

In my opinion the only artist in my album collection who comes close to Shanias effortlessly belting performance here is Patsy Cline, so if you like her you'll like this.
I know it wasn't overly successful at the time but as a retrospective I think Shania should be proud to have it in her back catalogue. It's a faultless debut and a very worthy addition to any Shania fans collection.
You may not think so at first but it WILL grow on you...

Album Description
This International version of this smash hit album contains the regular (red) pop mixes on disc one, plus the exclusive world/rhythmic sound mixes (blue) on disc two. The blue disc is exclusive to this version and is not scheduled to be released in the USA. Mercury. 2002.Customer Reviews:
Up! The blue disc is awesome!!!.......2007-04-20
All three discs accompany each other and each disc are different for the different genre of Shania's fans: Country, pop and rock, and finally her international fans.
I love 'I'm Jealous' on the blue disc. It is very beautifully written and mixed and each Indian instruments help bring out a deep-slow moving ballad that touches the heart. A beautiful love song!!!
Others that I love are C'est La Vie, I'm Gonna Getcha Good, In My Car I'll Be The Driver, I'm Not In The Mood To Say No.
The Blue disc is a must for any Shania Twain fans!
One of the best CD's........2007-01-11
A musical experiment love it or hate it.......2006-04-28
I still say everyone should give it some credit even if it is so different.
If you like hard rock then it's OK.......2006-04-24
nice songs the rest is screatching electric guitars, 3 sets
of drums, shouting back vocals....it's hard rock and I hate
that.
The grean CD - supposed to be the Country versions - is pure
nonsense. It's somewhat less noisy and you hear some more
steel guitar. I just do not understand how Shania is considered
as a country artist. She probably was during the early 90's but
after the interruption of Garth Brooks, Country music changed
into heavy rock and Nashville didn't stop this trend towards it.
If you like Country and want to listen to it you will have to
buy remastered versions of artists from the 60's, 70's and 80's
like I do. Nowadays -again- I inmensely enjoy listening to f.e.
Gene Watson, Johnny Duncan, Johnny Lee, Moe Bandy, Charlie Rich
etc. etc. etc. That's what I call Country and not this "heavy,
punk-like pop rock whatsoever!
International version nothing great.......2006-03-21

GOOD.......2006-02-15
I GOTTA BUY A TRIBUTE TO SHANIA TWAIN.
Not for 'fair weather' fans, but an interesting retrospective..........2006-02-11
This album is typical of the late '80's pop-rock genre Shania gravitated towards on account of her early career whilst supporting her siblings after the death of their parents.
As a fan of, say, 'Foreigner' or 'Heart' I can safely say that Shanias performances here do not lack anything in comparison. Not forgetting either that these are by no means polished album tracks produced for general release, being only re-mixed demo tapes.
If you want a perfect example of how good her vocals are on this album, record yourself singing to a backing track in your bathroom at home to see how awfull this could have sounded - and just how much potential there was waiting to come through.
'Lost My Heart' and 'For The Love' are my personal favourites here and ably demonstrate her ability to belt out a good song with passion and committment.
Take no notice of the tinny quality of the music recording, concentrate instead on that amazing voice and be glad she had the grit and tenacity to pursue her dreams, thus providing us with the great vocal talent we came to appreciate - not to mention the pleasing aesthetic qualities she brings to our screens.
And take no notice of the poor reviews listed here - In my humble opinion there really hasn't been much thought employed therein.
Country Purists Beware (ah ain't no country purist).......2005-09-14
The red-state folks who need Shania to be strictly a "country" artist and turn a blind eye to her pretty-darn-good pop remixes probably won't be able to deal with this, as it could lead to dancing of the non-line variety. But us more "liberal" fans OK with our singers stretching sometimes will find much to enjoy here. Ironically, some of the crunchiest of these ("Wild and Wicked", "Hate To Love", "Luv Eyes") sound a bit like what producer/hubby "Mutt" Lange turns out with bad boys like Def Leppard. Go figure.
Early standouts for me, are "Lost My Heart", both mixes of "It's Alright", and "Bite My Lip." In "Lip", Eileen Shania tolerates...barely...unwelcome advances from the boss, then her boyfriend cancelling on their dinner date.
One fairly big omission in the liner notes: I caught 2 additional songs NOT written by Paul Sabu and Eileen Regina Lange. "For the Love" is a remake of the late Bobbi Martin's 1970 hit "For the Love of Him" and was written by Martin and Al Mortimer. "Half-Breed" (yes, the Cher song) was written by Al Capps and Mary Dean. Just trying to give credit where credit is due, that's me...
Nice surprise. Nice price. Recommended.
Great Stuff!.......2005-07-18
