5 out of 5 stars one of the greatest ever.......2005-10-19

Johnny Cash is one of the great American artists. These are the early classics. Cash is probably the only one is equally great as Elvis Presley. The collection is an event. My dad was a big fan of Johnny Cash and he introduced me to his music when I was a kid. I had many of his records when I was young. It was great to have that music around. I didn't realize how great Johnny Cash was until I was much older. There are a lot of the great early singles like "Hey, Porter" and "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line." There are other great tunes that you wouldn't get in a proper greatest collection like "Get Rhythm" and "Trail To Mexico." The greatness of Cash seems so effortless. These songs are so simple and so ingenious. There is a style of guitar picking that is essential to any Cash record. Some of the later stuff seems inspired by spiritual music. There are constant themes of respect for the land, and a sense of place, and being in jail. Johnny Cash is also known for love songs. Those are central to his work. There are many songs about being a loner like "I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow" and "Always Alone." One of Dad favorite's songs was "Hey, Good Lookin'." There are 61 gems in this collection. It is very fine. Johnny Cash is a poet and a great musician. He is a big influence on music.

4 out of 5 stars Great Record.......2006-01-14

This album should be in every Cash fan's collection. Although Johnny's earlier recordings are more famous, the Mercury recordings have a tempo and an energy that the earlier recordings lack.

4 out of 5 stars This is the best sounding Johnny Cash.......2006-01-04

I have several other CD's by Johnny that have been remastered and none of them sound even half as good as this one.

Several of these songs are not the "HIT" songs, but several of these are better than many of the hit songs...

The first 9 songs are awesome as is the clear version of "Wanted Man" at the end...

I am not sold on his version of "Cat's In The Cradle", but I am glad to hear his version. And "Home of the Blues" is just OK.

"Folsom Prison Blues" and "Wanted Man" never sounded better...and "I Still Miss Someone" isn't one of my favorites, but I actually like this version.

Per the liner notes "Get Rhythm", "I Walk The Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "Cry, Cry, Cry", "Home of the Blues", "Tennesse Flat Top Box", and "Wanted Man" are all Mercury Recordings, not the original Sun or Columbia versions. This probably explains why it doesn't sound like they were mastered by Thomas Edison and the RCA dog Nipper...recording technology had advanced light years from the fifties to the eighties...and in his fifties Johnny's voice and playing were still fine!

While "At San Quentin" is still my favorite...this is the clearest, best sounding of the Johnny collections.

2 out of 5 stars you can do better than this..........2005-02-10

If you want a low-priced sampler of Johnny Cash, you might want to find one made by Sony. This here is an ill-considered cash-in by Universal, featuring re-recordings made in the 80's. For under ten dollars, there are a number of better discs available from Sony - _16 Biggest Hits_, _Greatest Hits Vol. 1_, _Super Hits_, _Giant Hits_, etc. These are preferable because, for the most part, they feature the original recordings.

5 out of 5 stars A good quality assortment.......2005-01-16

This CD is not for the weekened Cash fan. Those who want 'Ring of Fire'and 'Boy Named Sue' can buy greatest hits CD's. The songs selected on this CD are more of Cash's cornerstone recordings expressing his true voice in music. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy songs like 'Ring of Fire' but the selections on the Masters collection are for the ones who want to experience the real Cash.

5 out of 5 stars Previous Reviews Here Are Hogwash........2004-02-24

The bottom line on this disc is that it contains really strong tracks that Johnny Cash fans will love. The songs (remakes included) are the well-written, well-executed and - here - nicely mastered. Do we NEED Ring Of Fire on another disk? It's fine that it isn't here. And as for the American Recordings, those won't show up on Greatest Hits collections for a while, so no one should be shocked that they aren't here. Is that to say that there aren't omissions? No. I'd have loved a newly recorded version of Boy Named Sue as well. What is really great about this disk is the crisp and clean sound of the newer versions of those early tunes. Every time I play this disk's version of Folsom Prison Blues, I just dig the fact that it doesn't sound like it's being played on a tape recorder through a sock in bowl of punch, under a table in a carpet factory. There will ALWAYS be Johnny Cash compilations getting released. With all the material out there, expect a good number of them to SOUND bad. Good tunes, bad sound quality. Just be judicious and buy the ones you WANT, because lord knows they won't ALL be necessary. That said, this one presents SOME of Johnny Cash's greatest hits with production that is fantastic. Read the track listing and, if this is a set you know you'd enjoy, buy it with confidence.

At Sun Records, Sam Phillips didn't allow the Man in Black to record his beloved gospel songs, so when Johnny Cash moved over to Columbia he got down to the Lord's business rather quickly, recording two sacred records within his first three years at the new label. This 24-song collection combines 1959's Hymns by Johnny Cash and 1961's Hymns of the Heart, making it more cohesive and compelling than most of the other Cash gospel sets. Cash adds a few originals to a variety of older well-known and obscure gospel songs. Along the way, the steady churn of the Tennessee Two is embellished by piano and vocal chorus, but it's Cash's own solemn and earnest readings that truly make this collection an essential entry into his catalog. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars The Gospel Collection Johnny Cash.......2007-02-19

An excellent gospel song/hymn book. One I would throughly recommend to anyone who likes this type of music. Would be good for church groups and singing groups

5 out of 5 stars 1992 Mastered, but Includes Johnny Cash's Entire First and Second Gospel Albums!.......2006-03-31

This CD came out in 1992. It is a compilation of the entire first and second Gospel albums by Johnny Cash: HYMNS BY JOHNNY CASH and HYMNS FROM THE HEART!

This album is very quiet, easy listening. I like it for quiet Sunday afternoons. These are standard musical arrangements in a mid-1950's style, but the songs are very mellow, calm, and filled with great lyrics about the Christian life, as well as many references to Bible verses and stories!

Don't expect the groundbreaking style of the Johnny Cash smash hits that he is most famous for, though! These songs are pretty much in the conventional, standard music industry sound before the birth of rock-n-roll. This is a bit of a throwback in musical styling, but it is also a sincere, heartfelt presentation of songs and Christian values that Johnny Cash loved and respected since his childhood, and through his entire life.

The CD booklet is b/w and pretty barebones. There is a short essay about the albums, which is interesting, but very little photography, only one photo on the cover and one other photo inside.

This is great to listen to because it is two albums on one CD, so you get nearly one hour of laid back Gospel tunes, which I really enjoy!

The first dozen songs, the entire HYMNS BY JOHNNY CASH album, has been re-mastered and re-released in 2002, tens years after THE GOSPEL COLLECTION came out. This re-mastered HYMNS BY JOHNNY CASH sounds cleaner, clearer and louder than the 1992 release, and it comes with a nice CD booklet full of many b/w photos and lots of text about the recording sessions. This is a great purchase, too, but if I had to pick only one, I would get THE GOSPEL COLLECTION first, since you get TWO albums, (and the HYMNS FROM THE HEART album songs are only available on this CD, as far as I know).

3 out of 5 stars A good gospel set but I'd recommend "God" first.......2005-06-06

Cash always gave me the impression as someone who believed in "Carpe diem"...his autobiography gives me the sense that he "seized the day" indulging in sin and claiming salvation in equally desperate, passionate measure. I think that's what gave him greatness when he sings gospel.

He's BEEN to the bottom..he's not a "hand-me-down" Christian who sees Christianity as something he believes because "my daddy did and so did grand-daddy and GREAT-granddaddy" etc etc etc. It's because he's known the tremors of withdrawal after battling drug addiction..and called out to Christ from the pits of despair. He prays and seeks Christ because he HAS to...not because he "ought" to and he sings these gospel songs because he wants you to know the Christ that HE does.

These songs were recorded by Cash between 1959-1961. Because the best of Cash's material in general has been the most personal, most of the best songs here are ones that Cash has written himself or that have special meaning for him. Unfortunately, too many of these are washed over in pipe organ and vocal chorus when a more stripped back arrangement would have been better.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Cash's arrangement of the old standard "The Old Account (Was Settled Long Ago)" is a good one and a standout here. He also sings the spiritual "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" with utter conviction..as though he could PHYSICALLY see the chariots of heaven waiting to come and collect him someday just as they did Elijah. Knowing the poverty of Cash's childhood lends extra poignancy to "I Call Him" (My clothes may be ragged and my shoes may be worn/But I've been a wealthy boy since I've been born/Because I call Him when I'm troubled and I call Him when I'm weak/And He always pulls me through my troubles someway/And I believe He'll be there..like He always is to answer when I call Him"). I'm certain he was thinking back to those days as he sang. "I Got Shoes" builds from its accappella open into a fingerpopping arrangement with a nice lilt. Shimmering vibes accompany "If We Never Meet Again". "Taller than Trees" is a "mama" song from L. Forbee that works well for Johnny. "My God is Real" in Cash's hands becomes defiant ("Some folks may doubt/Some folks may scorn/Well, they can all go on and leave me alone"), nearly daring you to doubt Johnny's God. "These Hands" is a nicely understated lyric of purpose for a family man looking to God's family now as his place to belong.

LOWS:
A couple of the songs here tend to be just a bit maudlin. "Are All the Children In?" is one of these: a recitation recalling Cash's mother checking post-playtime that all of the kids had returned before nightfall which becomes an all-too obvious metaphor for Heaven. "He'll Understand and Say Well Done"'s arrangement is just grating to my ears. Cash doesn't seem comfortable in its range, the "Mormon Tabernacle"ish choir is irritating, and the "old Western saloon" rinky-tink piano is jarring as well. This one's a junker to me. "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning" is full of phony drama from all the production bells and whistles.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you ONLY like Cash's late 50s-early 60s material, this is probably the gospel set for you. But I believe that Cash did a lot of his most vital recording at the END of his career (with the American Records label and producer Rick Rubin) and the CD "God" (ASIN B00004TB8B) includes several of those and is an overview of a wider spectrum of years (and styles) of his gospel material and as such represents a better set for those just getting into Cash's gospel material. I'd still recommend this one, but get "God" first.

5 out of 5 stars what a great gospel album by johnny cash.......2005-03-18

this is a great gospel album by mr cash. its got a bunch of his gospel hits. over the years. there's a few i wish were here on this album as well like the greatest cowboy of them all. that one is my very favorite gospel song by mr cash. but still this is a great album. most of these if not all of them are oldies' but thats ok i love his oldies stuff. johnny cash is still number 1 to many of us. and will be always. a fan of big john cash always kellysherman...

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Uplifting. .......2004-09-07

Should you ever find yourself down or dispirited, I heartily recommend that you put this CD into your player. "These things shall pass" is the best recommendation for anyone afflicted by the temporary downturns of life.

Overall, it's a melodious and highly addictive record. I recall playing it at work and one of my co-workers, after initially making fun of me, requested that I replay it many times. We even used to sing "I've got shoes" together. That was his favorite song. It's a joyous endeavor and will be pleasing even for those whom the lyrics have no meaning.

      Album Description

This very special seven-CD box set contains the seven albums he released on Sun Records and includes virtually everything he recorded for the label. All of his '50s hits are here, including "I Walk The Line," "Folsom Prison Blues," and "Ballad Of A Teenage Queen."

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great, but there are a few alternatives.......2005-12-03

This is certainly a great idea: all 7 of JC's Sun albums, in reissued form with extra tracks, all bundled up and sold at a slight discount over regular price for each. The only gotcha is that you'll have plenty of multiple song versions and duplication. Time/Life (yes, THAT Time/Life) just recently came out with an expert set that just includes 1 version of every Sun song he ever did (61 total), and it's usually the un-embellished version, for about half the price of this 7-disc monster. And there's always the exhaustive old Bear Family set. So you've got options, just pick the one that's best for you.

5 out of 5 stars great dialogue and songs.......2006-05-15

I have ALL of J. Cash's Christmas albums, as well as many, many others. I like this one especially because it DOES have dialogue and gives listeners who are truly big fans of his a better insight to him and his family/friends.

2 out of 5 stars Too Much Talk, Not Enough Music.......2006-02-04

I love Cash and his songs on this CD are good, but there is way too much dialogue between the songs. I bought this CD so I could listen to Music, not the singers/band talking back and forth about what christmas is/was to them.

This listing for this item is incorrect. There are only about 13 songs on each CD. I bought it for the song "Look at Them Beans". It was not included. I returned it to Amazon for a reported "bad batch". The replacement CD was exactly the same as the first.

2 out of 5 stars Amazon GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!.......2006-08-29

Like the other reviewers here I was disappointed that the tracks
listed were not on the album .
I bought another Album from Amazon (the Original Best of Johnny Cash) with "Chicken in Black" and "Boy named Sue" etc and listed as included and GUESS WHAT ! They weren't on that album either.
If you want these tracks get "Boy named Sue and other story Songs" $6.68
So far obtaining these tracks has cost me almost $100 dollars
when I could have taken the cheap option and got the $6.68 album in the first place

        1 out of 5 stars False advertising.......2006-07-28

I also bought this CD for the songs of "A Boy Named Sue", "Boa Constrictor" and others. However the lists say that disk two has 22 songs. It DOES NOT. There are only 12 AND none of the songs I wanted are on this. I am very upset with Amazon and the manufacturer of the CD for giving/allowing this mis-representation in order to sell a CD. My dad has always been a huge Johnny Cash fan. I ordered this collection for his 65th birthday, and when it arrived, I was sadly disappointed to find that the songs on Disc 2 and Disc 3 were listed on Amazon's site incorrectly. I was particularly interested in the funny story songs Boa Constrictor, One on the Right is the One on the Left, and Look at Them Beans - all of which were supposed to be on Disc 2. None of them are. For your information, here are the correct listings:

        Disc 2:
Don't Make Me Go; Goodbye Little Darlin'; I Love You Because; Just About Time; Katy Too; Luther Played the Boogie; Mean Eyed Cat; Next In Line; Straight A's In Love; Thanks a Lot; The Ways of a Woman In Love; You're the Nearest Thing to Heaven.

        Disc 3:
Born To Lose; Cold, Cold Heart; Fool's Hall of Fame; I Forgot To Remember To Forget; I Was There When It Happened; The Wreck of Old '97; You Win Again; Two Timin' Woman; Story of a Broken Heart; You're My Baby; I Just Thought You'd Like To Know; Blue Train
