ONE+ONE Worth It!.......2007-06-22
Both discs contain same vibe (from a certain point of view), they still are different but they have "i dont know what" that makes you keep listening and listening until you want to put it again.
I dont have a fave cd cause both have parts i love, for those who own it will understand.
Don't read the critics!!! Just Buy it, its a mixed compilation for the new generation duo Dj's that has something pretty cool and you will still hear it in the next years.
One+One surely is a recommendation you will love it and for parties !! :)

Fantastic, Fresh, and Groundbreaking..........2007-05-30
I'm not one for writing reviews here or anywhere, but I felt compelled to for this release. I stumbled into the One+One duo while at WMC in Miami. My friend and I caught their live show at The Fifth, which was their official release party for their One+One release. We were blown away. Subsequently, I've seen them in Chicago and in New York, and each time have been amazed at the quality of their music.
The release itself is the freshest, most original take on electronic music that I've heard in years. My tastes generally lean more towards house (vs. techno, for instance), but have been slowly acclimating towards a greater appreciation of tech-house, etc. This release strikes the perfect balance of "tech" and "melody".... of rich, vibrating basslines, and smooth harmonic overtones.
This release will be looked upon years from now as a true groundbreaker... trust me on that. Do yourself a favor and take a chance. I doubt you'll be disappointed, and I'd bet you'll have a hard time taking it out of your musical rotation.
Enjoy...
One + One Equals Three.... Damn Fine Discs.......2007-04-27
Disc one casts off with One+One's `Rover', at once ambient and electrically charged in a subtle fashion. It doesn't take more than a minute for a beat to drop, crisp and pleasing to the ears-Like a winding river, Rover's bassline slithers smoothly into formation, completing the necessarily sluggish introduction to this highly anticipated double disc mix. Manipulating the decks with deft precision seems to be no problem for the pair of rising EDM stars, though I feel that for a release so fresh and as highly anticipated that it was unwise of the duo to choose two relatively dated and familiar songs, including Deep Dish's "Stay Gold" and the overly-repetitious "To Ya Waistline" to help kick-off the album's first disc after Rover. Yet, by the time JZ's edit of "The Way We Swing" melds into the mixture, we're all beginning to move a bit. One+One creates an atmosphere whereby the constant movement between smoothly thumping club music and transient ambience is not at all uncomfortable. Some really decent tracks which caught my attention on the first mix are "Analog Sparkles," "Love it" and the One+One version of James Zabiela's "Human." James represents his home-grown style with this one and reminds the listener that it is two individuals working with one another to perform, and not a single entity. I am always happy to see "Soothe" play in a mix, and it does so at the end of mix one. Its smooth and minimal appearance (that I am sure was inspired by Fanciulli) delights the senses and aids in bringing the eccentricity of the first mix to commendable closure. Beware of "Think of Love." I did not expect such an impassioned and diverse song to wrap things up: Middle-Eastern and wild, yet coherent and thoroughly enjoyable.
The second mix is the most musical fun I have had since M.A.N.D.Y.'s "At the Controls" release. I think the second mix's aura is wacky and frenetic - hell, listen to the opening track "SimonSis1"! Zabiela went to town on the sampling here. Again, for me, the key-words that describe the musical timbre of this mix are "smooth," and "silky," but all of these stupendous elements are background operations now, allowing for the ensuing madness to take to the fore-front. "Being Stoopid" lethargically slides into "Give Me Luv/Erotic Discourse" (JZ Erotic Luv Mash-Up), raising the wackiness bar to rather unbelievable heights: Even better, we're allowed to bat-around a bit with Fanciulli's own "Cat Out of the Bag (Jim Rivers Cat Nap Mix)," which steadily gains momentum while pursuing a melody that leaves me feeling as if it had been delivered from outer space for my listening pleasure. "Work It" shows Zabiela's wizardry at fooling with the decks again, arbitrarily dropping sick beats into a slick stew of what has now become an EDM frenzy. The Hi-Fi Bugs add a significant techy-prog number with "Don't Die, Don't Kill Anyone," a track whose funky flavor negates making necessary the intriguing track title! Further tracks to note as you traverse down this wacky, unorthodox trail (like watching Alice in Wonderland!) include... well, the whole rest of the disc, to be honest. It is rare that I make the following statement, but EVERY SINGLE track on the second mix adds its part in what amounts to be quietly irresistible madness. There will be no skipping of tracks, here.
But wait! There's more.
The duo prepared a special third bonus mix that is accessible via the internet. The third mix amounts to what I consider a 45-minute combination of the first and second mixes. The first 25 minutes are so slowly paced with a repetitive melody; I sometimes find myself bored with it, but it should be considered a necessity to those of you who enjoy falling asleep to music. By the 28 minute mark, the mix's speed picks up with some spoken-word insertions, and then *wham* - it's off to Zabiela World for another blissful fifteen minutes. Within these fifteen mixes lies everything the second mix was perhaps meant to be and more, since it is so finely condensed and thus leaps and bounds more accessible. I feel the obligation to point out the sexy house bass on the second half of the third mix because for me, it makes the second half what it is.
A superbly smooth, wild and fun recording mixed by two of the world's finest, the musical journey that is One+One is sure not to leave my stereo for months to come. In this case, One + One equals five; five stars out of five, that is.

Very nice! (how much).......2007-04-10
"The Way We Swing" is where the disc really starts to get good. Really good for the next several tracks. Again, listen for all of the details in each track. Fast forward (not really of course because you would be missing out) to track and things get ridiculous.
Disc 2 starts with the only track that I don't care for. It actually sounds like there is something wrong with your CD or speakers. Now I know this is intentional...but I don't care for it.
"Being Stoopid" makes up for the poor beginning which is an excellent track that has beeen around for a while. Back again for a remix of "Give Me Love". You will know this when you hear it. Another classic. Track #4 is excellent. So much going on it makes your ears hurt (In a good way.
I'm not going to ramble on any more about this release. Just know that it is from 2 of the best in the industry.

My favourite track is "The Flying Circus", a fantastic action cue. (The bass-trombone is great!!)
The track "Jenny" is very beautiful, and one of Horner's best love-themes ever.
There are also two jazzy songs on the album. I think they are very good.
If you are a fan of James Horner, or you like Star Trek II, you might enjoy this cd very much.

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.
The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16
I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.
I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15
This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.
Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.
I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.
This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

Hot! Front row seats to see Etta James, 1963!.......2007-05-20
The audience is up screaming and dancing from the first number and Etta immediately slides into the sexiest version of Jimmy Reed's Baby, Any Way You Want Me To Do, giving the song all new meaning. Just four years earlier Ray Charles topped the charts with What I Say, and Etta belts it out true to form with all the flavor Ray gave it, and the audience is absolutely enthralled. You are right there with them on this recording.
She puts The Beatles to shame on Money (That's What I Want), and beat them to it here, rocking out to the tune originally recorded by Motown writer Barrett Strong in 1959. The Beatles made a hit out of it in '63 only after this show. They've Etta James to thank for warming Americans up to the beat.
The house stays on their feet keeping the floor wet though a rocking bluesy Seven Day Fool and they don't get a rest till the guitarist gets to put on a show of his own with Sweet Little Angel; a B.B. King classic, sung by Etta "with a feeling" as Little Walter wrote and Paul Butterfield so famously quoted and promoted. Oh, what a feeling. The first set ends here and we break for drinks!
Encore time! Ooh Poo Pah Doo gets the fans all riled up and dancing again. You can imagine a mixed crowd of revelers, drinks and smokes set down now, see 'em Twisting in front of the band and throughout the aisles. Back to B.B. King for Woke Up This Morning in rockin' double time, and Etta finishes off her party sending everyone home sweaty and in the mood with another Jimmy Reed classic, Ain't That Lovin' You Baby.
Oh, Baby, what a night!

****1/2 actually.......2005-06-11
Some listeners might find James' vocal improvisations a little bit annoying at times, and a couple of songs are on the sloppy side. But most of this album is just plain great, from the opener "Something's Got A Hold On Me" to the three bonus tracks which include a driving "I Just Want To Make Love To You".
Gavrell Cooper and the tough, supple rhythm section drive along the wonderful soul stompers "Woke Up This Morning" and "Seven Day Fool", and James shows her versatility on a lovely rendition of the almost-too-cute "All I Could Do Was Cry". And Etta James have the crowd in the palm of her hand on Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo".
Fans of Etta James probably own this album already. It is one of the highlights of her career, and if you don't have it already, get it right away. This is why record companies bother to release live albums.
THIS IS THE A-BOMB!!.......2002-06-02
The toughest singer you've ever heard........2001-09-07
Besides the incredible singing, the other thing that makes this album a joy is the audience. Their excitement is palpable. On a couple of songs, Etta gets a thrilling call and response going with them, and their energy seems to feed her. The album is the next best thing to Etta James in person.

Between the traditional honky-tonk of Randy Travis and the raucous country-rock of Travis Tritt lies a middle ground of country-pop. At its worst, this is sentimental, easy-listening music--it's as if Barry Manilow had added a steel guitar. At its best, though, as in the hands of a Rodney Crowell or a Kathy Mattea, country-pop marries the storytelling craft of Nashville with the harmonic sophistication of the Beatles. Crowell is the obvious model on Days Gone By, James House's third attempt to make the transition from songwriter to artist. He doesn't quite rise to Crowell's high standards, but House comes close enough to make this a thoroughly enjoyable example of commercial country-pop. Like Crowell, House is a great admirer of Roy Orbison. The best song on House's new album, Little by Little, was obviously inspired by the operatic crooner in shades and it builds unstoppably from tentative efforts to forget an old lover to a big, climactic confession of undying love. Orbison's influence can also be heard in the brooding obsessions of such House compositions as "Silence Makes a Lonesome Sound" and "Until You Set Me Free." Producer Don Cook, who was never bashful about building a big wall of sound with the Mavericks or Brooks & Dunn, gives these songs the Orbison-like grandeur they require. No one would ever mistake House's voice for Orbison's, however. House does his songs justice with a solid tenor, but he has neither the powerful instrument nor the inimitable style that separate the special singers from the pack. Days Gone By is a useful showcase for a talented songwriter and a reliable performer, but songs like "Little by Little" and the title cut need someone like Raul Malo or Chris Isaak who can give these tunes the Orbison-like vocal they deserve. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

This program seems designed primarily to display soprano Sumi Jo's fabulous singing and famous stylistic eclecticism. However, it also exhibits an admirable religious inclusiveness, encompassing expressions of faith from the Latin liturgy to Negro spirituals; there is even a Richard Strauss song that is essentially a paean to love. An incongruous note is struck by a nun's song from an operetta by Benatzky that is a corny Viennese waltz and by a soundtracklike arrangement of a 16th-century Ave Maria. Ranging from Mozart to Broadway, this musical mix is held together by Sumi Jo's ravishingly beautiful, pure, warm voice and the way she can color and inflect it, and by her mastery of every style (though not every language; her German in particular is unintelligible). Her intonation is impeccable, her breath control incredible. Jo's top notes soar triumphantly, and she can sustain them indefinitely, with enough power left to make a crescendo at the end. Highlights include Ravel's "Kaddisch," which sends shivers down the spine; arias from operas by Rossini and Donizetti; and arias from sacred works by Gounod and Fauré. Of two spirituals, the second one is simpler and more convincing. The accompanying forces are excellent; James Conlon doubles as pianist when not conducting. Susan Graham also makes an appearance in the moving invocation "Take Care of This House" from Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
Nice Voice.......2007-05-06
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-17
Sumi Jo, born in Korea,is a much sought after coloratura soprano, having triumphed on stage, and in recitals all over the world. Not being fond of coloraturas, I make an exception for her voice, because of its depth along with the very high register. She shows a great deal of sensitivity to all of her varied selections on this disc, and each delivery is a 'gem' unto itself.
I must personally comment on those works that I particularly enjoy. Hearing her sing Mozart's 'Laudate Dominum' was a real treat; it doesn't matter how often one hears that lovely piece, just like all of his music, it 'wears' well. The 'Pie Jesu' was absolutely stunning as Sumi Jo sang it, and it is a pleasure for me to hear the selection from "GIGI" by Lerner & Loewe; not being a great broadway fan, I have always liked that specific musical. I think because it was well-done when I saw it years and years ago.
This disc is abolutely totally enjoyable. There is something for all musical tastes, and the conductor/pianist James Conlon does a great job pulling it together!!!!!
Sumi Jo- coloratura supreme.......2006-04-09
The rest of the album is enchanting as well as breath taking. I am a harsh critic when it comes to singers so I do not give those compliments very often, nor am I easily moved by singers but Sumi Jo has certainly done that with this album.
My only complaint is that I would have liked to hear her take of "Ave Maria" by Schubert which, while recorded many times over, would complimented her voice perfectly due to it's simplicity. "Sing low sweet chariot" would have been another great one to hear but as far as spirtuals are concerned I was very happy with her acepella version of "Amazing Grace." I was never a huge fan of "Amazing Grace" since it's been done a thousand times over but she brought such seetness and emotion to it. Of course I am kind of biased becuase I offically hate the "belting" version of this song and that's how it's usually done. It's nice to hear a simple, straight forward version.
My last comment is that it's nice to hear Sumi Jo sing less operatic pieces considering most opera singers are rarely bold enough to sing anything other than classical pieces, excluding Renee Fleming of recent.
Prayerful and beautiful.......2005-11-14
Another nice change is that the orchestral accompaniment enhances the singing rather than just tagging along as an afterthought, which often seems to be the case. It is fitting that James Conlon gets equal billing here. This is splendid singing to splendid music.
Sumi Jo is comfortable in any language and in a broad range of styles. I was uncertain how she would tackle songs like Amazing Grace and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. I need not have worried. In the latter she reveals a soulfulness that fits the lyrics perfectly.
The only track not worthy of this collection is Bernstein's Take Care of This House. I suppose, as it is a prayer, it was an obvious song to include, and Jo sings it very well, but it is just a very poor song. That still leaves 14 excellent tracks that, if you are a lover of good singing, you will want in your collection.
A spectalce of voice and vocalization.......2004-12-29
Never is there a weak moment in this incredibly beautiful collection of classical bleeding chunks and spirituals. I don't think you'll confuse Sumi for your favorite spiritual singer in "Amazing Grace" and "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child" but she is magnificent singing the complete and incomplete tunes elsewhere on the CD by famous classical composers including Mozart, Richard Strauss, Rossini, Schubert and Donizetti, to name some of them.
She is in wonderful voice and fresh-faced for the Loewe-Lerner "Say a prayer for me tonight" and does an equally nice job with Susan Graham accompanying Leonard Bernstein's "Take care of this house" from "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue". I'm not much for this kind of music -- I bought this exclusively for her rendition of Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" -- but it adds a dimension to the concert that brings it into the realm of popular Broadway tunes.
This is a wonderful concert of familiar and not so familiar songs from a singer whose voice is eloquent, beautiful and rich, with significant range and span from PPP to FFF. Sumi Jo controls her voice well throughout the concert, giving everyone something to think about regardelss of musical preference. This might have been improved if she'd included a Beatles tune -- maybe "Elenor Rigby" or "Yesterday" -- accompanied by the orchestra and James Conlon's direction. But it stands with any similar collection by any singer as it is.

DJ, Mo' Wax label linchpin, and U.N.K.L.E. architect James Lavelle is an icon for good reason. His ease in dovetailing hip-hop, progressive house, and trip-hop is legendary, and it's part of what makes the two-disc Global Underground: Barcelona compilation such a corker. Thanks to clever mixing, cuts from Mo' Wax protégé DJ Shadow seem right at home next to those by former Stone Roses howler Ian Brown, dub-dancehall king Roots Manuva, brilliant Brit DJs Layo & Bushwacka, and agit-prop rappers Dead Prez. Brown's trippy, staccato "F.E.A.R." is almost a full-blown suite, and fans of U.N.K.L.E.'s Psyence Fiction platter will hear familiar snippets (ditto fans of Shadow's Private Press). The flow never stops as Lavelle scorches through these 30-odd tracks without pausing for breath, showing he is to the Barcelona rave scene what Jose Padilla's Cafe del Mar series was to Ibiza: mind-numbingly cool and absolutely essential. --Kim HughesAlbum Details

Serious Break Beats.......2007-03-30
As most Global Underground fans are aware, these compilations are saturated with techno and trance. Enter Mr Lavelle with his in-your-face break beats and trippy electronica. Definitely different from the previous 22 Global Underground releases...gutsy and appreciated.
My only gripe with this two disc set is how ordinary the second disc is. Disc 1 is powerful and easily tells the tale of Lavelle's careful track selection and layout. He really wanted this album to be special and I truly believe that half of it is!
Unlike most Global Underground compilations for the city series, the first disc is usually lighter and more mellow while the second has a little more oomph. The opposite holds true with this album. The second disc loses the intensity of the first...and to be frank, is a little dull and monotoneous in its track selection.
Disc 1 gets 4/5 stars while disc 2 gets 3/5.
Sonically fantastic as well as alternative to the genre.......2007-01-26
This one stands out among GU releases..........2006-12-09
CD1 starts with a DJ Shadow tune running into a wicked groove by Leftfield with rapping by Roots Manuva, soon easing into a tune from Sasha's Airdrawndagger. This one is all over the board yet there is a steady groove underneath it all with solid mixing and song transitions. Somehow it works.
CD2 follows a similar notion with a similar mix of styles from Meat Katie onto a heavily laced beat propping up Dead Prez's refrain of "still bigger than hip-hop" rocking back into a cool groove from Lee Burridge ending on a high note by tossing in a rock and roll song with a mindbending take on 'There Goes the Fear' from Doves.
It's a mix that keeps the listener busy, especially with headphones, as sirens, airplanes, chirping crickets and other background noises give your brain a tweak. Genre busting and really good stuff.
Ahh... the DJ mix.......2005-01-23

best alternative gu mix so far.....................2004-03-23
75% of this mix is absolutely flawless, even the breaks/prog disc 2. You can really tell maybe Lavelle has put more effort into his mix than previous gu djs because he actually uses some of his own production in the mix to astounding effect. If you've maybe grown a little weary of the usual trendy swooshing mix than this mix will restore your faith. Gracias, Mr. Lavelle.

Album Description
System Recordings is proud to present `At The Controls,' the new double mix CD from James Holden. `At The Controls' comes at a time with James Holden firmly in the glare of the spotlight of the international clubbing world. His productions and remixes are receiving play from superstar DJs like John Digweed, Lee Burridge, Steve Lawler and Sasha, and his DJ schedule includes dates on just about every continent. James' collaboration with vocalist Julie Thompson, "Nothing," was hailed by Trance legend Tiesto as his tune of the year, and he has remixed everyone from Madonna to New Order to Britney Spears to Black Strobe to Kirsty Hawkshaw.2006 is certainly looking bright for 26-year-old international DJ/producer rising star James Holden. His vibrant mixing skills and exciting track selection shine throughout `At The Controls.' Over the course of the 2 disc mix, James Holden reveals himself to be worthy of all of the praise being heaped upon him. His instantly-recognizable ethereal progressive house style meshes with acid house, techno, electro and downtempo melodies. The music sparkles with a very apparent attention to detail, featuring tracks and remixes form Death In Vegas, Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada and Holden himself.

Hand Over The Controls.......2007-01-26
Holden's double-disc set threw me off at first; I kept looking for the fabric, when almost all I found was meticulous stitching. What I was hearing was most certainly "electronica" (a pointless classification if there ever was one), but beyond that, well, it was anyone's guess. A first listen, to anyone not familiar with Holden and his work, will bend the ears as much as it does the genre.
Therein lies the beauty of Holden's "At the Controls." Many of his contemporaries play board games with sound, moving by definable rules to a clear end goal. Holden's aural experiments are more like a Rubik's Cube: muddled and uncertain at first, but steadily realigned, patterns and cohesion arising only after seemingly random shifts and turns. There are a lot of colors on this cube: dark ambient fogs, industrial ratchetings, the siren-song of trance, and the unmistakable heartbeat of deep, deep house. In the hands of a lesser artist, they would certainly clash. Holden's eye for detail, however, creates a pastiche of achingly ethereal noise. With a master's ease, he bends and blends until out of the storm of sounds we see rays of the light behind it.
The first record has a mostly metallurgical tone. Over the passively sweet vocals of Kate Wax ("Angel Blues"), Lucky Pierre's strings and muted trumpet ("Angels On Your Body"), the invigorating guitar of Death In Vegas's "Anita Berber," and the traditional trance inspirations of Midimiliz's "Trace Function," Holden casts a cool, neural net of iron and lead (found best in "Metro Pop," "10101," and "Perlandine Friday"). It's a dichotomy that at first seems like a contradiction, and which can make for some rather dark listening. However, by the time Holden whips out "Charlie's House" (by Nathan Fake), it's obvious that he's going for something far more transcendent. This is clearly the glorious climax of this record, a powerful combination of computerized crinkles and plain, old, uplifting joy.
He carries this mood wholly over into the second disc, shifting that puzzle box of beats ever faster with songs like Motiivi: Tuntematon's "1939" and Ego Express's "Live and Sirius Prime," the colors and codas rising up golden and glowing in songs like Middleton's "Solemn Thirsty" and Slag Boom Van Loon's "Poppy Seed." By the time he reaches his second climax in the reprise of Plastikman's "Cor Ten," the album is almost fully realized, a precisely ordered collection of musical chaos. I say "almost" because, by the close of AFX's "Every Day," this puzzle box still has a few misplaced squares, a few turns that didn't work. These are found in his harshest and most mechanical tracks. The rigid rips of wiry static in "Nazi Trance F*** Off!" sound like a failed experiment in rhythm structuring, and "Hotter Now (Stripped Down Mix)" is SO stripped down that it plays like half of a song.
Even these brief lapses, though, bear the stamp of Holden's need to orchestrate every last blip and nod of this almost unclassifiable album. Although the end result has its tiny patches, its ragged moments where the songs run bare, the whole thing is truly astonishing, a cloak of vivid life. I suggest you try it on; this suit wears well.
PLEASE DISREGARD ANY RATINGS LOWER THAN 5.......2006-12-14
At The Controls is clearly way ahead of its time, it is higly experimental but still is very accesible. Dont turn this album away at first listen, its like a long jazz piece, you have to listen to it a few times to understand it. This album is highly intelligent, a true masterpiece. Every single second of the whole album has all these meticulous details, very artsy but never pretentious. Each track takes you somewhere else, its a great listen for anytime of the year.
Once again Holden, thanks for the great music.
I recommend every artist that is featured on this album (if you can find material of course) and if you like this mix try and get everything with Holdens name on it, Holden is raising the music bar with every piece he makes.
Please check out border community music label for more great music. Dont miss out on Nathan Fakes 'Drowning in a sea of love' lp album, great music as well, and get all material you can find by Petter, he is a great producer too, with a perfect live set.
