Not a dud on it........2007-02-19
Bit of a stretch giving it a five star rating I originally thought, but it really does deserve it. There are a couple of five-star songs on this album - America Street, and the quieter, sorrowful Sorry to a Friend, but every other one is a four starrer or very close. You won't be bothered getting up to skip any of these tracks while you're listening to Honour Among Thieves, and that makes a pretty good album as far as I'm concerned.
If you like James Taylor, Nickel Creek, The Waifs, or the quieter stuff by Garth Brooks or Lee Kernaghan, you'll be well served by adding this to your collection.
Great songwriting and great singing add up to a great album........2007-02-07
Ediwn McCain's songwriting really shines on this album. The tracks "Sorry to a Friend" and "Solitude" are both destined to be classics among Ediwn McCain fans. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, he has only had a few radio hits; "I'll Be" being his most popular, and another great example of beautiful lyrics and songwriting, although on a different album.
The tracks range from bluesy folk to light rock. The lyrics are often sublime, and always intelligent. McCain's voice is like a glass of fine whiskey; edgy and smooth at the same time.
Excellent album for those looking for something accessible, yet mature and engaging.
The original, the best, and nearly the lost art.......2004-11-24
This is the album that introduced Edwin McCain to the world, and it is a wonderful amalgam of rock, blues, and jazz, featuring acoustic and electric guitars perfectly blended with saxophones and woodwinds, layered with Edwin's beautfully powerful voice. There is no other album out there with this particular sound.
If you have ever loved an Edwin McCain song, then you simply must get this album. Unfortunately, the woodwinds abruptly disappeared on his next few albums, only to reappear in the latest "Scream and Whisper". You'll appreciate them here.
The Greatest Album of All Time.......2001-08-06
yup, this is it...the best of the best. Not even Edwin McCain has or will be able to outdo himself. This is what music is supposed to be. I will never get enough of it, it's just mind-blowing. Thank you Edwin for raising the bar, you define brilliance.
The artist that 'popular' radio forgot!.......2001-04-24
The first time I heard "Solitude" I said to myself that if one iota of those lyrics had any truth that this guy was the greatest songwriter to live in the last 10 years! When I met Edwin and the band some time in 1996 and found it was a true story I knew he was the greatest songwriter that 'popular' radio would never appreciate. "Solitude" got me to buy the CD, "Jesters,..." made me a huge fan. Because of EMB I've become familiar with two other artists, Jeffrey Gaines and Pete Riley (/Treehouse), who both opened for EMB the numerous times I've seen them. If you like what you hear on the CD but have never seen EMB live you have no clue what you're missing. If you like EMB and you're looking for more fantastic artists check out Jeffrey Gaines and Pete Riley.

The great band you haven't heard!.......2005-07-29
If you miss the days of real rock bands who were comprised of guitar, bass, drums and a ton of conviction, then you owe it to yourself to hear the Brandos. Comprised equally of members from NY and the Pacific Northwest, they were signed to an American label in the late 80s & they were eventually given the old screw
job by the record company. The band decided to head for Europe where they built a devoted audience and a fine catalog of albums on SPV in Germany (funny how Europeans appreciate American roots rock more than Americans do). Sadly, this means they have been absent from the airwaves stateside and I'd bet most hip, rock radio program directors don't even know who they are. David Kincaid is the driving force behind the band but all four members share equally in their success. The first obvious influence is John Fogerty and how can you go wrong there? Kincaid's Irish roots show through on many tracks and his fascination with the Civil War has only added to their singular identity. 'Honor Among Thieves' is their best LP start to finish and the greatest hits package, 'Contribution' is also a great introduction. Except for 'Gunfire at Midnight,' which suffers from poor audio quality, you can't go wrong with any Brandos release. Also, David Kincaid has released 2 albums of Civil War songs of which "The Irish Volunteer" is best. David actually searched museums & libraries for songs & fragments of
songs from the Civil War era, mostly focused on the experience of the Irish soldier in this conflict. This is a must-have if you call yourself a Civil War aficionado.
No Frills, No Filler.......2003-10-15
It's a shame bands like the Brandos fall into obsurity when sh*t
like 98 degrees get's all the hype and popularity; these guys were ahead of their time (any band that can cover a CCR tune and make it their own deserves airplay and critical accolades!);
at 14.98 this cd is a bargain, you won't be disappointed...
One of Best Groups of All Time.......2000-01-21
First heard Gettysburg back in 1987. Managed to find the album on vinyl in 1988. Thought then and still think now that it is one of the top 5 albums ever recorded. Can only help but think that the Brandos were 10 years ahead of their time. If they came out in the late 90's during the Modern Rock resurgence, imagine how far they could have gone.
Straight -up R&R........1999-06-30
Not much filler, straight-up rock. No "effects", just some strong face-first music hovering around the 2-3 minute mark per song. Listen and enjoy!
Simply wonderful.......1999-06-19

Album Description
Immovable, skin like armor...a rolling juggernaut. Rhinoceros, Buffalo's sxe monster could NOT be more aptly named. Having had a comprehensive West Coast tour under their belts at a stage when most young bands are more inclined to play to their own scene; Rhinoceros is a force unto themselves. Sonically and stylistically nothing short of pulverizing. There is no need for Rhinoceros to carve out a small niche for themselves within straightedge hardcore, or the broader scene of hardcore because Rhinoceros is going to change the nature of the game. Stylistically, reminiscent of early Madball with touches of of 100 Demons; Rhinoceros does not fall into the trap of just borrowing from their influences, but rather etching out their own place within hc and sxe. Their debut full-length, is imminent..much like the chaos that will follow.

Customer Reviews:
Faces + Badfinger = Artful Dodger.......2005-02-16
In the Mid-70's, Artful Dodger, mainly popular in the Cleveland and Pittsburgh areas, combined an infectious combination of artistic qualities from the Faces and Badfinger into a power pop posture and provided some accessible, straight-ahead rock that unfortunately for whatever reasons never really got its push to the commercial mainstream.
"Honor Amoung Thieves" was their second release in 1976 after an excellent 1975 self titled debut, a truly forgotten and virtually unknown pop classic that was close to being on par with other power pop artists like the Raspberries and Big Star at the time. "Honor Amoung Thieves" is not as strong and consistent as the debut but still has some quality AOR-orientated power pop rock.
When I first heard the kickin' "Keep A Knockin'" and singer Billy Paliselli, I thought I was listening to Rod Stewart and the Faces. A number of other catchy tracks such as "Not Enough", "Good Fun", "Hey Boys", the title track and the nice ballad "Scream" displays that the band was truly having fun and still shining with success.
If you want to rediscover true 70's power pop that has been relatively unknown to the mainstream, pick up these first two Artful Dodger CD's and breathe in the fresh air of enjoyment.
How Could They Miss?.......2004-03-06
This album came out in the 70's during my early adolescence, when I had just discovered album-oriented rock (now classic rock). Having just gained an appreciation for Kiss, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, etc. on my local rock station, I was pretty excited when I heard "Honor Among the Thieves" blaring out of my new bookshelf Radio Shack stereo (14 watts!). This previously unknown band burst onto the scene out of nowhere. Their sound was a unique pairing of Rod Stewart vocals and Rolling Stones guitar tones; all wrapped up in Aerosmith sing-along melodies and catchy guitar hooks (both of which are missing in most of today's rock). Couple all of this with the initial DJ enthusiasm over what was supposed to be their breakthrough album, and the fact they shared the same management team as Aerosmith and Ted Nugent at the time, Artful Dodger seemed to be a band ready to break big. Based on the title track, I couldn't wait to have my parents drive me to the local record store to buy the album. Do you know the rare feeling you get today when you buy a CD based on a couple of good songs, and you discover that it's actually a great listen from start to finish, as opposed to being comprised mostly of throw-aways? Well, this album is just a great listening experience from beginning to end. It's one of those that will have you singing along in the car, tapping your fingers on the steering wheel, and taking the long way home. Tragically, for whatever reason, this band disappeared from the radio and record stores just as quickly as they arrived on the scene. Perhaps the management team had only so many resources to spread around, and chose to focus their energies on the already established Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. Nothing against these giants--they're great. But given the right support, Artful Dodger is one of those classic "could've beens." You can't go wrong by adding this one to your collection--right next to "Toys in the Attic."
One of the greats forgotten.......2004-02-07
This is a quality rock album from a classic band that didnt get nearly enough recognition(like the michael stanley band). The music is melodic, edgy and fun.Great scratchy Rod Stewart like vocals and searing crunchy guitars. The bands first release, the previous "Artful Dodger" is a notch hotter than this one but this one follows suit with no shame at all."Honor among Thieves" will be sure to please anyone with an appetite for the rock classics. The song "Scream" is a melodic and emotion provoking acoustic rock ballad that is a high point on the album.
Too bad this is the only one available.......2000-02-09
This is a good CD even though I think the albums that came before and after this one are a little better(their debut and "Babes on Broadway"). But all their albums contained two ingredients that appear to be in short supply these days-skill and fun! Purchase this Cd so the record company takes notice and releases the other 3.
One of their best........1999-04-22
Waiting for all of their past LP's to come out on CD, Artful Dodger was one of the classics.

Customer Reviews:
Little Molecues of Mueller.......2005-10-05
This CD caught my eye on the P.S. Mueller home-page. I was curious how he would work out as a lyricist, since the actual words on the cartoons tend to be few, though always well-chosen, and frequently hilarious. The result is really quite good, and every bit as surreal as you might expect. I did find that the available sample track ("Little Molecules") was not as representative of the album as a whole as I might have liked -- it remains my favorite, whether because I heard it first or because it's actually better I don't know -- but the other tracks are also quite good. To my ear, the sound is very much like early Leonard Cohen, or maybe some of the less percussive Tom Waits, with the nice buzzy overdriven amplifiers giving it a good, gritty garage-band kind of feel. The Blue God departs from both of these guys in that it has very different subject matter, and the final track, "The Blue God", actually takes on something of a narrative arc, which was a surprise. Mueller is definitely in some other head-space than most people, as any fan of his cartoons must know, but he's clearly not trapped in cartoon-land, and has given us a nice bit of bonus surreality to chew on.
Unique and powerful.......2005-06-11
This is a great album. The lyrics hint of deep emotion and the dark blues/jazz sound is powerful.

Cowboys hit the mark.......2003-04-06
The Columbus band X Rated Cowboys put out a solid debut album. The album is full of good music, good lyrics, and good times. These Cowboys are going somewhere. Look for their follow up album "Saddest Day of the Year". It's just as good as "Honor Among Theieves". If you ever get the chance to see X Rated Cowboys in concert, I highly suggest you go see them. They know how to put on a good show.
Cowboys come through.......2002-01-05
This album is excellent. The songwriting is superb, the musicians seem very in to what they are playing. Definitely has a polished sound to it, unlike many other indie groups. Recording is top quality and I would recommend this to anyone who likes Johnny Cash, Ronnie Dawson, and just plain good music.
