A lonely Westerner in Nashville, Marty Robbins salved his soul by cutting an album (in one afternoon) of mostly self-composed cowboy ballads. One of them was a four-and-a-half-minute epic, "El Paso," that broke every rule of Top 40 programming to become a No. 1 pop and country hit in 1960. Robbins was arguably the most surefooted and accomplished singer in all country music, and that was never more obvious than on these Western ballads performed to often breathtaking perfection with a very small group and a vocal trio. Other titles include "Big Iron" (also a Top 30 hit), "Running Gun," and Western classics like "Cool Water," "Billy the Kid," and "The Strawberry Roan." Three extra tracks flesh out the 1999 release, including "Saddle Tramp" (the B-side of "Big Iron") and "The Hanging Tree" (title song from the 1959 Gary Cooper Western). --Colin Escott

Classic Cowboy.......2007-05-27

Although Frank Sinatra is credited with creating the first "concept" album. Columbia might have one-upped Capital with this unique "Old West" collection. Although its been almost 50 years since this jewel was first recorded, it sounds like it was made yesterday. Marty Robbins has had many hit albums in the C/W top ten, but none of them has been as endearing as this 1959 classic. You get "El Paso, "Cool Water" "The Hanging Tree" and 12 more ballards sung by one of Country/Western all-time favorites. I can guarantee, you will continue to listen to these cowboy story songs for years to come.

Gunfighter Ballads by Marty Robbins is Cowboy Songs at their Best.......2007-03-20

The lable attached to the CD says "All Time Country Classic". It's misleading. This is an all time classic, period. I first bought this collection as an LP. The front said "High Fidelity", not "Stereo High Fidelity," but as a kid in 1959, I didn't care. "El Paso" was #1 on the pop charts. Marty Robbins had been a "cross-over" artist making the charts with "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation," so I was primed when this album hit. Grammy-winning "Gunfighter Ballads..." set Marty Robbins apart. It isn't country, it isn't '50s pop, it might be Americana or folk music. It is cowboy or western music, I suppose. There are more reasons to own this album than "El Paso." "Cool Water," "The Master's Call." Utah Carol," "and "The Strawberry Roan" are all great songs interpreted by a great voice. "Gunfighter Ballads ..." is what it now says on the CD jacket, a "classic." Marty Robbins died in his early sixties, so many younger ears may not know him. They should, especially if they collect the good stuff from all eras.

I grew up listeniing to Marty Robbins, and the Gunfighter Ballads is my favorite album and I just had to get this CD...because I use to listen to the music on LP, back in the 80's and I haven't heard the songs for over 15 years...with great imagination, listening to these songs would make it seem like you're watching a very interesting Western movie.

More than just "El Paso.".......2007-01-28

If you want to buy this CD just for "El Paso" you'll be plenty happy. If you allow yourself to listen to the remaining tracks, you'll be very happy. This was Marty's best effort, IMHO.

The remastering is done very well, although the source recording, being in 1959, does have its limitations. Overall, a very enjoyable CD, and well worth the work done to remaster and restore it!

I find the quality of the CD GUnfighter Ballads & Trail Songs to be fantastic. I never thought I would ever find this album in a CD form. This was one of my favorite albums I loved listening to when I was little. My dad loved this album as well and now that my dad passed away. Everytime I listen to this CD I think of my dad. Thanks Amazon for having it on hand for me to purchase it.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A must for both casual and die-hard Western fans. Great even if your sense of nostalgia doesn't reach that far back (like me; I'm 22). I love the combination of slow ballads and fast, jumpy songs.

More Momories of Westerns.......2007-03-09

Boy, do these bring back memories of some of the Great Westerns of the 50's. We sit and listen to the songs and think of the movies and the TV shows that they are from. We can remember who starred in the movies and how the "Sons of the Pioneers" entered the stage to sing.
This is a GREAT CD.

For anyone old enough to remember all the great Old West TV shows and movies from the same era, this CD is bound to bring you lots of fond memories and relaxing pleasure. What's best, the artists are all the originals; there are no remakes. Plenty of tunes are on this CD. It's well worth the price and the time.

This album takes me back to Texas. "The Sons Of Katie Elder" sung by Johnny Cash and "Nevada Smith" sung by Merle Kilgore sound good but are a bit modern. "The Searchers" sung by the Sons Of The Pioneers really hits home. As the sun sets and the days grow short I ride away and I look toward home.

A "cosmic cowboy" in the country-rocking '70s, Michael Martin Murphey revived his career as a cowboy traditionalist with this 1990 release. Mixing campfire chestnuts such as "Home on the Range, "I Ride an Old Paint," and "Happy Trails" with contemporary hokum such as "Cowboy Logic," the album returned the western to the music formerly known as country and western, and its success inspired a series of sequels on the Warner Western label. This album has many classic cowboy songs which are superbly sung by MMMurphey, traditional but upbeat... not the GAutry & RRogers style... definitely singalong stuff.

My original disk had a play error and was promptly replaced by Amazon within days of notification. "Hats off" to customer service!

A career defining album and reinvention.......2004-12-03

Murphey has always been a cowboy...his second solo album was titled based on his classic song "Cosmic Cowboy." But early in his career his cosmic cowboy persona was a modernizing of the cowboy myth, a guy as he said could work cattle in the day and discuss philosophy in the night. This album was a return to his western roots, a tribute to the cowboy myth. And a very effective tribute it is. A mix of new songs celebrating the cowboy lifestyle and traditional cowboy songs, the album is very effective and is not only a highlight of Murphey's career but a good introduction to western songs. The booklet is almost scholarly in it's description of the history of the traditional songs. However, it is not dry, but a very entertaining and detailed filled stories behind the songs. Very highly recommended.

If you like Western songs then this is a great one to have.

No originality.......2006-02-24

If you like the Sons of the Pioneers then you have already heard the songs on this album, proformed almost identically. The only diference is Dale Evans, but since Roy was a member of the sons I guess it should be expected. If you haven't listened to any of the son's albums then Songs of the old west is worth your buck.

Sorry, Boys!

Although I thought the world of Roy & Dale, this album won't cut the mustard. I only had to listen to the previews to tell you that. This is not one of the better Sons of The Pioneers with Roy & Dale albums. This is one of those "times are changin' so let's slick this one up" albums. They slicked it up alright. Slid right outta my fingers and back to the rack.
Sorry, but I like the albums that have the "old" sound to 'em. Like they were singin' on the trail...not in the studio, with all those fancy voice enhancers. Just my two cents worth.

Ride Down Happy Trails!.......2003-05-26

Roy and Dale sing a collection of songs from their movies which record the flavor of the Old West. This is a great CD for Saddle Pals of all ages.

Roy and Dale: Always!.......2001-06-22

If you are a Roy Rogers and Dale Evans fan, you might want to add this one to your collection. The songs are vintage King of the Cowboys and Queen of the West material. The backgrounds are sweet and maybe a little too "orchestrated" for my cup of tea, but the vocals are crisp and of excellent quality. Dale is featured with equal time on the C.D., and her voice is one of the most beautiful you'll ever hear. Roy's "Colorado Trail" is,in my opinion, worth the price of the album. I've often wondered what the world would be like if there were no Roy Rogers. Thanks to recordings like this one, we'll never have to find out! So, saddle up, there's open range ahead--where the air is clear, the sage is always in bloom, and cowboy music comes drifting through the gloamin'. Would-be cow punchers of all ages will like this collection. Trust me.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

When the makers of Toy Story 2 went looking for a story that Woody could own in the celebrated sequel, they settled on thickening the plot by making Woody the former star of a 1950s-era television variety show. I bought this CD strictly based upon other people's reviews, as I had never heard Riders in the Sky before. My kids (ages 2 1/2, 4 and 5 1/2) ask for this CD often---especially my youngest! The CD is peppy and fun and enjoyable to listen to--even after the 50th time. If your kids like TOY STORY 2, then chances are very good that they will enjoy this CD as well. Even my husband enjoys this CD and he often balks at "kids music" that isn't familiar.

a very pleasant and somewhat haunting cd, easy listening at it's best for western songs,cd only has 10 songs on it but they are all very good and easily worth the price.This cd would be good to play for background music also.I would like to see more of these cd's.

Nice Cowboy CD.......2003-11-03

i really like the CD. it has nice instrumentals of many classic cowboy songs. the quality is very good too. the only downfall is that the CD is only about 30 minutes long so it is quite short. but other than that, i recommend it for anyone wanting to hear these nice classic songs.

Desparado Stories.......2006-07-11

Ballads of Jessee James, Cole Younger,Belle Star and others are done with accuracy and style. Strawberry Roan done with Chris LaDeoux is the best ever recording of this old favorite. The West is going to get wilder is so wild you'll wear out the CD in the middle!

Not as warm as it could have been.......2005-07-25

My favorite song on this selection is, El Paso. I love the arrangements with the brass that adds the warm Mexican environment and when you close your eyes to listen to the song, you can't help but feel you are hanging out inside Rosa's Cantina. You can see the wooden tables, the dancing girls, the liquor, the guitar players, the long bar, and every scene imaginable in the town of El Paso.

Here is what I found that was disappointing.

Soon after the fair gunfight:

The part I felt that took away from the song was when the verse; "Just for a moment I stood there in Silence. Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done. Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there, I had but one chance and that was to run"

This verse makes the song. He wasn't a cold blooded killer. He was jealous but by cutting that verse out, he didn't seem like a sensitive man who was in love with his girl. I remember asking Wild Windy Bill McKay, who worked with Roy Rogers, what he thought about that verse. He replied that he wasn't a bad cowboy he was a just jealous and when he was jealous, rage took over. Windy went on to say that the cowboy didn't mean it as it was the crime of passion that over took. Pointing back to that verse, it paints the cowboy's warm sided character. I think if Michael Martin Murphey would have recorded that verse, then he would have recorded a classic that would rank number one with Marty's. I somehow believe that the verse Martin Michael Murphey cut out was Marty Robbins' favorite. I also feel that if Mr. Marty Robbins were here, he'd say to Michael, "Hey you did a great job. I almost like it better than mine. I do have a question though? Why did you cut out that verse?" Just ask Little Jimmy Dickens as to how he feels about this verse. I give it a 3 fir effort but had that verse been in there, I would have given him more than the 5 stars if I could. I gave a lower grade because I felt that there was a lack of respect for the original artist. I know that every artist is different, and they each feel the song differently. But, it came across with mixed signals. He comes across as a cold hard bitter killer because he doesn't take the time to at lease show some respect to the young boy he killed in a fair gun fight, but instead he runs off and heads to Rosa's back door to run and catch the fastest horse he can find so that he can run away. If he would have not edited the verse, the song would have been consistent. There seems to be a small hole and having that lyric in there, would have made the song tighter.

A Natural Follow up.......2004-04-23

Once again, Murphey resurrects cowboy classics. Many deal with the exploits of legends of the West, both the "white hats" and the "black hats". If you've enjoyed MMM's early recordings of cowboy songs, this is a natural. If you didn't enjoy the earlier collections, you've got a loose connection somewhere and you'd better get it checked out. On this CD, Murph is joined by various guest artists who contribute a nice touch to the finished product.

I bought this as a result of "Cowboy Songs" and "Cowboy Songs II" and haved played it over and over. Overall, it holds up well to repeated listening and is usually in my "travelling collection" of CDs that I take with me on the road.

Carrying on the traditions of Marty Robbins.......2003-03-14

Cowboy music was given a massive boost when Michael recorded several albums in the nineties full of cowboy songs. Not since the heyday of Marty Robbins had any singer had any singer been so successful with such music.

Marty's influence is evident from Big iron, the opening track, a duet between Michael and Marty made possible by modern studio techniques - Marty died in 1982, ten or eleven years before this album was recorded. Michael also covered Marty's classic cowboy song, El Paso.

Several cowboys are the subject of songs here - Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Frank James, Cole Younger and Sam Bass. Michael recognises women's contribution to the old west with Belle star (generally described as a brazen hussy, according to Michael's interesting notes) and Queen of heartaches.

Strawberry roan is a great song about a rodeo horse. Riders in the sky has been covered many times, but Michael's version is among the best.

If you enjoy this album, you will also enjoy his original Cowboy songs album, and the Christmas album Cowboy songs 2.

Cowboy songs 3.......2002-07-28

I was 20 years old when I first met MMM. I was a student at that times. One day, when I was passing by a music market I heard a cowboy song playing. I asked who's singing this song. The salesman said "He's Michael Martin Murphey. This cassette is very well. I recommend you to buy it." As I like cowboy songs, I bougth it.
Now I'm 35 years old and still MMM is my favorite singer.
In fact, once I used to have this "Cowboy songs 3" audio cassette. But it's become deformed and out of use by the heat of the sun. I wanted to buy a new one but I could not find it in Turkey.That's why I ordered this cassette.
The songs are really very well. Especially Big Iron is the best for me.
