5 out of 5 stars The best compilation of old Willie greats..........2007-05-25

This CD is the definitive collection of some of Willie's works from the '70's and '80's... "Angel Flying too Close to the Ground" is excellent, and many are standards that speak to the creative and comforting nature that is Willie...

If you are getting to know Willie, this is the CD to start with...

Getting this was like getting a brand new CD. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Love My Willie.......2007-03-23

This CD has all my favorite Willie Nelson tunes, including "On the Road AGain," "All of Me," and more. After a while, though, all the songs start to sound the same. Oh well, I still like it.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2007-03-09

I am not a country fan, but Willie is something special. There is nobody like him, and never will be. This album is a steal at the price. There are so many creative songs on here, it is in my top 10 alltime favorites.

Amazon.com essential recording

Five producers are represented in this sampler of pre-superstar Willie, including RCA titan Chet Atkins. (For a more thorough overview of Nelson's RCA years, investigate The Essential Willie Nelson.) The great appeal of this 18-song collection, however, lies in its scope. By the time he'd signed with RCA in 1964, Nelson was established as a proficient Music City songsmith whose own recordings were frustratingly underappreciated. While the likes of "Nite Life," "Hello Walls," "Funny How Time Slips Away," and "Crazy" (all represented here) may have been country hits for others (Ray Price, Faron Young, Billy Walker, and Patsy Cline, respectively), young Willie's takes reflect his remarkable talents as a vocalist. Then, too, there are the likes of the obscure "Opportunity to Cry," as dark a song as ever came out of Nashville. Nite Life presents a trailbreaker in the making, providing a perspective on an essential phase in Nelson's development. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars I guess Nashvile was the roughest........2007-04-11

Willie Nelson didn't become a country music superstar until 1975, when he was 42 years old. He had been trying to make it for over 20 years before he had his breakthrough hit, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain". Before that, he was best known as a songwriter; having written hits for Patsy Cline, Ray Price, Faron Young, Billy Walker, Roy Orbison and others. He had some moderate success as a recording artist, with his biggest hit being "Touch Me" in 1962, which was a #7 Country hit. That song is on this CD, along with a few other minor hits and several non-hits. This material shows that Willie's unique singing style had been there from the beginning. Because he was so unique, prodcers often didn't know what to do with him, and sometimes stuck him with arrangements that didn't really suit him. Most of the material here works well, although not as well as when Nashville just gave up and let Willie do his own thing. This is a good sampler of Willie's early years. My personal favorite is the autobiographical "Me and Paul".

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd .......2006-12-30

I ordered this for a member of the family looking for a few particular songs. This cd had them all and then some. He was very satisfied with the quality of the cd. I was very satisfied with Amazon service and fast shipping of seller. Great cd for all those long time Willie Nelson fans!

5 out of 5 stars An Eclectic and Visionary Collection.......2006-09-25

This fascinating collection of early singles, rarities, and album tracks off of early Liberty and RCA recordings of Willie finds him searching for his voice, yet is entirely satisfying and remarkably consistent. It's a great record.

The early recordings of some of Willie's best known songs -- "Nite Life," "Crazy," "Healing Hands of Time," "Hello Walls" -- all benefit from the spare, open, and nuanced arrangements found here.

Willie's early rockabilly efforts are particularly successful -- "Rainy Day Blues" sounds a bit like early Mose Alison, and "Everything But You" could have fit easily onto a Johnny Cash or Elvis Sun Session recording.

Willie's bright and tasteful arrangement of "Bring Me Sunshine" -- perhaps the only song here that is not about a lost love and feeling blue and lonely -- clearly presages the work he would do a decade later with Booker T and the MGs on Stardust. I hope the album that track came off of is re-released in its entirety soon. Finally, his clever and economical songwriting style is highlighted in "One in a Row," one of his finest songs on an otherwise superlative album.

Fans of Willie would be well-served to pick up this early collection, it does not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Album.......2006-05-15

Let me start by saying that I'm not a big fan of Willie Nelson's voice and delivery of a song. But, I doubt if there will ever be (or has ever been) a songwriter of Willie's caliber....well, maybe Don Gibson? Still, this collection of early Willie Nelson is amazing, and in my opinion, his best vocal work. I'm especially partial to "Mr Record Man", "One in A Row", and "Man With the Blues". There's also an assortment of Willie Nelson penned numbers made famous by others, including "Hello Walls" and "Funny How Time Slips Away". While his take lacks the smoothness of Faron Young and Ray Price, it is interesting to see how Willie envisioned their delivery. It would be worth your time and money to grab this CD while it's still available. It presents a glance into a Willie Nelson that most folks didn't realize existed; a Willie Nelson that didn't quite fit into the Nashville Sound formula.

5 out of 5 stars A Curiosity, Yet One of Willie's Best.......2005-12-03

Admittedly, I haven't heard everything in Willie's huge cataloge. But listening to this, I'm struck by how strong his voice was in the early '60s when these seminal tunes were cut. These are all wonderful genre-bending songs, relaxed, down and full of soul, with Willie's trademark, just-behind-the-beat vocal phrasing, the kind of thing jazz singers have long done. Accompaniments are generally just right, spare, bluesy and loose. Nothing here is dated. If you're a "Stardust" fan or a newcomer to Willie, you'll be greatly surprised by just how right this collection sounds. Pick it up, by all means. It's a total classic glimpse of, yes, a genius just starting out, but sounding like he's got the wisdom of an old man.

4 out of 5 stars The life I love is making music with my friends........2005-05-01

This is a decent collection of Willie Nelson's Columbia Records hits from 1975 to 1981. However, it is by no means comprehensive. Of the 16 Top Ten hits Willie had for Columbia during this period, 7 of them are not included here. I should also point out that some of the songs here are live versions, instead of the original versions. Also, "Good Hearted Woman" and "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" feature Willie solo; they aren't the hit duet versions with Waylon Jennings. But this is still a decent sampler of some of Willie's best work.

4 out of 5 stars Ahh, now here's enjoyable country music........2004-06-03

This is a great cd that I listen to at least once a month. It's the only country cd I own (I hate country) but I enjoy it immensely every time. "I'd have to be crazy" is worth the price of the whole disc. And "Blue eyes crying in the rain" is truly a timeless classic. I would recommend this to other people who hate country, it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Whiskey River, take my mind.......2003-09-26

They just don't come any cooler than Willie Nelson. And this is a terrific collection of his older music.

Before American country music went _entirely_ corporate-prefab (at least in Nashville), there was a little group of singers and songwriters that people dubbed the 'Outlaws'. Depending who you asked, this group tended to include at least Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Our Hero.

The tendency (with exceptions) was for these guys to be -- in contrast to the clean-cut down-home simple aw-shucks 'country boy' of popular fancy -- a bunch of rowdy long-haired hippie-redneck maverick-rebel-iconoclast good old bad old boys. It was speculated that they were occasionally less sober than judges, and it was even rumored that one or two of them might perhaps have smoked a little weed once in a while. Their voices were raw, they wore bandanas on their heads instead of around their necks, and their guitars were sort of twangy. The general impression was that you might not want your daughter to date them but they would probably be a helluva lot of fun to go drinking with.

Well, all right, that image was as carefully cultivated in its way as the one it was supposed to replace. But damn, these guys played _real_ country music, like Haink an' Loretty done. Turn on your local country radio station today and you'll hear the contrast at once.

Willie was and is the very coolest of this crew. By the measure of coolness alone, he stands in a class _almost_ by himself -- 'almost' because J.J. Cale and Neil Young also exist. In his way he's every bit as iconoclastic (and even surreal) as Neil. Like Neil, he's something of an acquired taste. And like Neil, he's neither bound by nor terribly interested in our quaint musical conventions and the artificial lines we like to draw between allegedly different types of music. In fact, he might well object to my describing even his early stuff as 'country'.

This particular CD collects most (not all) of his cream-of-the-crop 1980-and-earlier material. It doesn't replace (say) _Red-Headed Stranger_. But it will (a) introduce you to this living legend if you haven't heard much of him before, and (b) provide you a handy disc to pop into your player when you just want to listen to your favorite songs.

The older I get, the more I find myself looking back on the artists I've listened to for the past forty years and discovering which ones really have staying power. Somewhat to my surprise (since I never really considered myself an avid fan of his), Willie is wearing much, much better than most of them.

3 out of 5 stars You Can Do Much Better.......2002-07-13

This collection is actually missing some of Willie's best songs - "Always on My Mind," "City of New Orleans," "Poncho & Lefty," etc. Try Columbia's "Super Hits" instead.

5 out of 5 stars Love Willie, Love this CD.......2002-06-28

The funny thing about Willie is that everybody seems to like him. From the real-deal cowboys to folks that "only" listen to hard-rock, everybody concedes that Willie is great. This CD only crystallizes that fact. All of the songs that you remember from the 70's are here -- "Good Hearted Woman," "Whiskey River," et al. And there are some that you've maybe never heard but that will stay with you all the same. There is nothing finer than this rendition of "Angels Flying Too Close to the Ground." So, anyone who loves Willie should own this CD. It is some fine work. Of course, it's not everything he's ever done, but it is a good thumbnail sketch of his pre-1980 work.

If this CD was free, it wouldn't be worth owning. I have many Willie CD's and this one is so bad I'm throwing it away. It sounds like it was recorded on a microcassette recorder inside a dumpster. The sound is thin, harsh and tinny. Willie should buy every copy and publicly shred them.

First things first: The title is deceptive. Yes, these are super hits--but not necessarily for Nelson. Check the song list, because if you're looking for songs made famous by the jazzy cowboy, you'll likely be disappointed. A master of reinterpretation, Willie applies his skills to a list of favorites, turning them inside-out and coming up with wholly original versions. --Alexandra Russell
