Once an Outlaw, later a Highwayman, now an elder statesman, Willie Nelson joins forces with Merle Haggard and Ray Price (both of whom have recorded duet albums with Nelson) in a celebration of the classic country song. Everything about this is defiantly old school, from the production by veteran Fred Foster and the musical support from steel guitarist Buddy Emmons and Texas Playboy fiddler Johnny Gimble and vocal backing from the Jordanaires to songs from the likes of Harlan Howard, Leon Payne, and Lefty Frizzell. For all of the artists' generational ties, their differences are what distinguish the project: Nelson is the reediest and most conversational vocalist, Haggard the bluesiest; and Price remains the quintessential countrypolitan crooner. Whether they're harmonizing on Mickey Newbury's "Sweet Memories" or trading verses on Howard's "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down," the vocal blend suggests old friends having the time of their musical lives. Guests include Vince Gill (on "Heartaches by the Number") and Kris Kristofferson (on his Why Me Lord"), but a trio like this doesn't need much outside assistance. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Let's be clear: Last of the Breed is a story - actually, a novel, if not an epic - unto itself. The title sums it up pretty well: On these two discs three classic performers, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard, band together on songs they've known and loved for years.

Their contributions don't need elaboration. Each is a legend. All three hark back to a time that's in some ways gone. When you consider the lives they've lived, the world that formed them as artists, and even the landscapes they knew as they began playing in beer joints and backwater clubs long ago, then the truth of those four words, Last of the Breed, comes clear.

Look a little closer, and they take on another reference, to the songs as well as to the giants who celebrate them here. Whether drawn from deep in the tradition, back from the well of Gene Autry, Lefty Frizzell, and Floyd Tillman, or picked from the more recent catalogs, this music conveys a feeling that might be mistaken for nostalgia but is in fact a timeless eloquence.

They don't write or sing `em like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Great Country Music.......2007-07-12

This is truly the last of the breed of real country musicians.
There aren't many country pickers and singers left. All the "New Country" folks are just rock stars with a cowboy hat on. This is really good listening. Just relax, sit back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Last of the Breed - Well Done.......2007-07-03

This CD is a well rounded selection of music with three of the best artists to deliver it. When it comes to Country music, these three artists can give you the best there is. The production is first class and this is a big part of the sound. If you haven't purchased this album, do so. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All.......2007-06-28

Last of the Breed is the best of the best. The songs, words, music, and especially Willie, Merle & Ray you will simply & totally enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The rocks of this kins of music . .......2007-06-28

ANYTIME willie and ray have ever gotten together to record it has been a TREASURE for your ears . WILLIES VOICE WORKS WELL with any ray price style music . And vice versa . many a people will say oh waylon/ willie were the best together . And yeah they were very good . But for some reason these two know when to let the other shine and when it is time to carry a part in any given song .BETTER then any other two singers in any music format . Then THERE IS merle who is so good at what he does that people dont realize it is the music behind him that has made him shine .He knows so well how to use the band behind him it is awesome .Anytime you get a recording of merle you will see he knows how to use every bit player around him so well that it seems each are enjoying themself s so much that it just has to be great . But this IS ALMOST the last of the breed . This would have been the last of a breed if the three artists that were left out at least made a little showing on this recording. yes the other three that would have made this release complete would have been the 3 top guys left . GEORGE JONES / HANK JR / GENE WATSON . and these 6 are the last of the best of the best left touring . THIS LIST IS THE LIST OF ARTISTs THAT NO ONE WILL EVER FILL THIER SHOES .

3 out of 5 stars Better in theory than in practice.......2007-06-23

What's not to like about this album? Great singers, old familiar songs, it seems like just my cup of tea. But, for whatever reason, this music just didn't "click" with me. After just a couple of listens, I found myself skipping over these CDs in my CD player. I realize that this review might not be very helpful to others because I can't manage to put my finger on what it is I didn't like about these CD - I just didn't. If you don't already know and love the individual material of all three of the artists, I suggest you try and listen to it before you buy it.

With 41 tracks drawn from nine record labels, the two-disc Essential Willie Nelson is impressive in its breadth. Disc one is simply superb; it begins with 1961's "Night Life," recorded for the obscure Bellaire label, and moves on to several of Nelson's early 1960s Liberty recordings, an overlooked gem recorded for Monument in 1964 ("I Never Cared for You"), a cherry-picked selection of his RCA and Atlantic sides, and finally his mid-1970s hits for Columbia (where he found his greatest chart success, beginning, in 1975, with the No. 1 single "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"). Disc two, however, is hit-or-miss. Classics like "On the Road Again," "Pancho & Lefty," and "Nothing I Can Do About It Now" are offset by such lesser material as "To All The Girls I've Loved Before" (recorded with Latin pop star Julio Iglesias), the phoned-in "City of New Orleans," and the sounds-better-on-paper "Highwayman" collaboration with Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings. (Just because they all made it to No. 1 doesn't make them "essential.") Nelson's two best albums of the 1990s, Across the Borderline and Teatro, are represented by a paltry two songs. The disc ends with collaborations with U2, Lee Ann Womack, and Steven Tyler and Aerosmith (the previously unreleased "One Time Too Many"). None is particularly worthy of a best-of collection. Still, while it doesn't quite live up to its billing, the Essential Willie Nelson offers an excellent career overview of one of country music's true legends. --David Hill

5 out of 5 stars This will do--til I can buy every CD he's done.......2007-07-06

I didn't like Willie Nelson til I moved to Austin. You can't live there, hear all the good things he's done, and then listen to him and not start liking him. Someone has a problem, there's a storm, a fire--whatever, Willie's there playing and singing his heart out and getting as many of his fellow musicians out doing the same. Now, I want the whole collection because the B-sides are as good as some other folks' A's.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must have!.......2007-06-28

Great collection of Willie's best. Note though that the songs on the label of the 2nd CD are not the actual order they are recorded on the CD.

I am really disappointed with most of the cuts in this collection. For example, I had never heard "Pancho and Lefty" with violins and chorus. Not the Willie I want to hear.

Willie Nelson has never been one to do the safe or expected, and this Booker T. Jones-produced album of pop standards from the '30s and '40s certainly fits the profile. It's also one of the better albums of Nelson's career, allowing Willie to dip his fragile, quivering tenor all around the beat in songs like "All of Me" and "Unchained Melody." Jones's organ, piano, and string arrangements are low-key and swinging (except on the almost wooden "On the Sunny Side of the Street"), and Nelson's vocals on "Georgia on My Mind" and "Moonlight in Vermont" are filled with a dignified and slightly jazzy country soul. The 1999 reissue adds a pair of bonus cuts to the mix, including the lullaby-like "Scarlet Ribbons" and the somewhat out-of-place "I Can See Clearly Now." --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars September Songs.......2007-06-05

In 1978, Columbia Records--the same label that had handed Bennett his walking papers six years earlier--took a gamble and released Willie Nelson's landmark tribute to the standards, Stardust, named in honor of Hoagy Carmichael's signature tune. Nelson, who had already written a few tunes that would become standards in their own right, set out to record the "songs I grew up with," arranged for a honky-tonk country ensemble.
"The fact that we did `Stardust,' `Georgia on My Mind,' `Moonlight in Vermont,' `Blue Skies' just opened up the possibilities of getting a wider audience to listen," said Nelson. "From the older people who remember these songs, to the ones who never heard them before...a great song is still a great song."

At the time, critics believed this little collection would be nothing more than a speed bump in Nelson's country career before he got back On the Road Again. Instead, it caught on like a hot Texas prairie fire, heating up Billboard's pop charts for 117 weeks and warming the country charts for almost ten years. To date, Stardust has sold over four million copies and continues to do brisk business.

Stardust is the one that started it all for me. More than a quarter century later, it still impresses me as much as when I first heard it as a teenager.

By the time Nelson recorded this landmark album, he was already a country-music legend. With a laid-back ensemble of country-music performers, Nelson brings his unadorned singing style to ten of the most accessible standards, from the title cut to another Hoagy Carmichael classic, "Georgia on My Mind," and Irving Berlin's optimistic "Blue Skies." His take on "The Sunny Side of the Street" captures the hopeful spirit of so many Depression-era songs that helped keep Americans' minds off the tough times.

But the pieces that work best here are the more sentimental favorites, like Kurt Weill's "September Song," "Moonlight in Vermont," and the Gershwins' "Someone to Watch Over Me." Nelson conjures quietly powerful images with his sincere storytelling. His love for these venerable melodies comes through on every track, mainly because of his understated knack of letting the music do most of the talking.

5 out of 5 stars Willie at his Mellowist.......2007-04-02

A great singer singing classic, timeless tunes. Can't get a better comination than that! I had purchased this 8-track tape back in the late 70s and had forgotten about how much I enjoyed it. Bought the CD from Amazon at a great price! This is not a country album but it is undeniably Willie Nelson-style. This is as laid back as an album can get. Beautiful in its own way.

Every song is presently well, the fidelity is just great. This is now one of my favorite CD's.

4 out of 5 stars (Move Over Georgia, I've Got...) LOUNGES ON MY MIND.......2007-01-29

In 1989, Girlfriend and I decided that we wanted to find a nice little lounge that we could call our own - a quiet place that we could slip away to from time to time and enjoy an adult beverage. A place where everyone would know our names, but they would mostly just bring to our table the things we asked for and then leave us alone. So we began the quest one evening, and the first place I suggested we sample was the intimate cocktail lounge located at the rear of THE CREST HOUSE RESTAURANT on Washington Boulevard in Culver City. We went there, and to two other places that night. Over the next couple of weeks, we visited several other drinking establishments in the Los Angeles area, and when the alcoholic haze finally settled in our minds, we found that nothing could compare with the very first place we'd tried.

So, THE CREST HOUSE lounge became our home away from home, and for years it was like an oasis of yesteryear in contemporary times. The quaint lounge featured a cozy little fireplace, nostalgic red booths, little twinkling Christmas lights year `round over the bar, a couple of televisions for the showing of Dodger games, and an ancient, reticent fixture at the end of the bar who Girlfriend and I referred to as "Mr. Doom" because he reminded us of the old gaunt ghost who sometimes hitched a ride with us in our "Doom Buggy" on the HAUNTED MANSION ride at Disneyland. And then there was that jukebox filled with great music from a variety of decades - most of it conducive to relaxation and gentle conversation about good times shared. Girlfriend and I gave that machine most of the exercise it got. (The geezers and geezerettes - God love `em - were forever complimenting us kiddies on our exquisite taste in music.) Our favorite selections were:

Moonlight Serenade (Glenn Miller); Boogie Woogie (Tommy Dorsey); I Wish You Love & That Old Black Magic (Louis Prima with Keely Smith); Desperado (The Eagles). And when I punched G5 and G6 on that old jukebox (which I frequently did) we got BLUE SKIES and MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT by Willie Nelson. Both of those lovely songs are found on this collection.

In 1978, Ol' Willie Nelson departed from his hometown, "Countryville", and with the great Booker T. Jones producing and arranging, he released STARDUST, an album of Pop standards. (If you're not familiar with Booker's old `60s band, BOOKER T. AND THE MG'S, you have missed out on some of the greatest dance music ever recorded. I mean, even Ol' Stephen T. can dance to Booker T., and I'm as White as Wonder bread!) Now the initial reaction one might have at the thought of Willie's nasal voice singing GEORGIA ON MY MIND is understandably, "What the--?!" That's got to be bad, right? Does a bear cr@p in the woods? Does a dog put out a fire...hydrant? Does a ghost haunt the building where I work? Well, the answer to the above questions is "yes" ... except for the first one.

Believe it or not, somehow Willie's schnozzy voice works perfectly with these mellifluous classics with their sparse but perfect instrumentation. (When Ol' Waylon used to sing Willie's part while performing their Country duets live and solo, he would hold his index finger up high for the entire audience to see, and then with great deliberation, bring it down to press one nostril closed and - voila! - Willie Nelson!) Well, fact is, Booker T. is a musical genius, and he knew exactly how to sculpt the ideal sonic form to compliment Willie's "unique" vocal quality.

Now, I've never cared for the song SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME - not by Willie, not by Frankie, not by no one - but to my ears, the rest of these songs are gentle, gorgeous, and romantic. ROMANTIC?! Yes, I said, "Romantic." Somehow Booker T. made Willie sound romantic and that's alchemy of the first order! You could play this album at low volume over a candlelight dinner with your Special One, and it would almost work. I say "almost" only because most of the songs are steeped in a melancholic marinade. So, the album might be better suited for playing at low volume while enjoying a warm glass of robust red wine and reminiscing about beautifully serene evenings you spent sipping Old Fashioneds with old flames in old-fashioned lounges. Or calling to mind past barroom brawls you participated in with old Mr. Doom while you were still in your youth. (Hoo-Wee! He had a wicked left hook ... for a dead man!)

A greatest-hits package from an artist who thrived on concept albums is a frightening proposition. Even the liner notes refer to him as the "all-time #1 country album artist." To top it off, much of Nelson's best work--Yesterday's Wine, Shotgun Willie, and Phases And Stages, for example--was commercially unsuccessful (not to mention on a different label). While Red-Headed Stranger and Stardust did make commercial inroads, they're best digested as single entities. With all that said, these Columbia chart toppers, which span from 1975 to 1989, still make for enchanting listening. By illustrating Nelson in his various moods---pop standards, honky tonk, cowboy, folk, gospel---it provides a worthwhile introduction, and will help newcomers decide where to move next. --Marc Greilsamer

Though this 1975 album cost Willie only $20,000 to record, it handed him the success he'd craved after years as a hit songwriter and modestly successful singer. By blending originals and vintage material, he created a timeless Western saga, one that originally left Columbia Records, who'd guaranteed him artistic control, skeptical. The label's doubts, amplified by the fact that Nelson had recorded the album in Texas with only his seven-piece touring band, evaporated after the album and two singles, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and "Remember Me," became huge hits and launched Willie into the stratosphere. This enhanced version preserves the original sequence, adding four bonus tracks. One, a brief snippet of Bach's "Minuet in G" from the 1986 Red Headed Stranger film, is inconsequential. Three more, from the 1975 sessions, are enjoyable covers of Hank Williams's "I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You," Bob Wills's "A Maiden's Prayer," and Pee Wee King's "Bonaparte's Retreat," footnotes to the original but welcome nonetheless. --Rich Kienzle

Saddle up, and let Willie Nelson take you on a mellow 33-minute trot through the Old West. Before this sparkling concept album Nelson had been known primarily as a songwriter, having penned hits such as "Night Life," "Crazy," and "Hello Walls." On this 1975 record, he creates a lonely and plaintive mood with an almost childlike lullaby quality. "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" thrust him into the spotlight, but ballads such as "Time of the Preacher" and "Can I Sleep in Your Arms" also receive sensitive treatments . Borrowing from turn-of-the-century cowboy music, Nelson guides a 15-song journey that includes some lively instrumental stops, but mostly wanders quietly through the sage. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger.......2007-05-13

Great! great! great! I had this record many years ago (in the '70s) and was very happy to find it on ebay.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-04-03

Stark, depressing, moving, quiet, sad, redemptive, and superb. All of these adjectives describe what many believe to be the primary Willie Nelson masterpiece, 1975's Red Headed Stranger. This classic was smartly reissued in 2000 with some great bonus tracks and much-improved sound. A necessity in anyone's music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Only memories remain........2007-02-09

This was Willie Nelson's breakthrough album, released in 1975, when Willie was 42 years. It is a concept album, telling a story about the Wild West in 1901. The basic storyline is about a preacher who kill his wife and her lover, goes on the run and is eventually redeemed by the love of a good woman. The instrumentation is very sparse, usually featuring just acoustic guitar, piano and drums. Some of the songs are very short, being just long enough to advance the storyline. The album is most famous for featuring Willie's first #1 hit, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain". That song is great, of course, but so is the entire album. The CD features four bonus tracks which were recorded at the same sessions but left off of the original album. They are: Johann Sebastian Bach's "Minuet in G", Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)", Bob Wills' "A Maiden's Prayer" and Pee Wee King's "Bonaparte's Retreat". This CD is a must get for Willie Nelson fans.

Less successful when it's sentimental (Waylon Jennings' "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys") than when it's wry (Willie Nelson's myth-puncturing "Me and Paul"), this cash-in compilation of previously released cuts was just in time to grab the first platinum record ever awarded a country album. It's not bad, but both Jennings' contemporaneous Dreaming My Dreams and Nelson's Red Headed Stranger are more nuanced tastes of the good-bad-but-not-evil-ol'-boy lifestyle. (Not to mention much of Tompall Glaser's own Outlaw compilation.) This 1996 CD reissue adds nine more tracks from the era as well as a new Jennings-and-Nelson version of Steve Earle's "Nowhere Road." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars THE BIRTH OF THE "OUTLAW MOVEMENT" IN NASHVILLE ! (and the rest of the world, too).......2007-07-11

Wanted: the Outlaws (1976) is the album that changed country music forever. Although most of the songs on the album had been previously released, the way it was all packaged and marketed reached an audience that hadn't been interested in this genre before, young rock music fans. The album cover featured photos of the long-haired, bearded, and rugged-looking Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Tompall Glaser, along with Waylon's attractive wife, Jessi Colter, on an old wild-west WANTED! poster. The music inside is a collection of country music, most of it on the rowdy side, with a couple of catchy ballads by Jessi. Waylon and Jessi sing an energetic duet on Elvis' Suspicious Minds. Willie sings of a musician's rowdy life on the road in Me And Paul, and then creates a thoughtful barroom scene in Yesterday's Wine. Waylon's at a bar, too, but he's country rocking with his song, Honky Tonk Heroes. He also sings the reflective My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys. Jessi's ballads, I'm Looking For Blue Eyes and You Mean To Say are very good, and she's a great singer. Waylon and Willie duet on Heaven And Hell, and their co-written anthem Good Hearted Woman, which includes an audience track to sound "live". Tompall adds his country-rock version of Jimmie Rodgers' T for Texas and the hilarious Put Another Log On The Fire. The album sold millions, and opened the door for a new brand of country music that would dominate the scene for the next decade. Even ol' Buck and Roy started sporting beards on the TV series Hee Haw, and so did Glen Campbell! Other country singers, like Hank Williams, Jr., David Allan Coe, and Johnny Paycheck got on board, and older outlaws like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard enjoyed new interest in their careers. Country rock acts, like Charlie Daniels and The Marshall Tucker Band joined in, and the "Outlaw Movement" became an influential force in contemporary music. This 20th anniversary issue is well put together, remastered to sound better than ever, and includes many songs that weren't on the original. The songs are listed as "The Original", "The Lost", and "The New". "The Original" are the songs that were included on the original release. "The Lost" are previously released songs by the singers as separate artists. The best of these are Waylon's (I'm A) Ramblin' Man and Slow Movin' Outlaws, Willie's You Left A Long, Long Time Ago and Healing Hands Of Time, and the duets with Waylon and Jessi. "The New" is the Steve Earle produced Nowhere Road, which is a new country rocker that features Waylon and Willie together. Wanted: The Outlaws is an important country music album, a peice of history, really, and is essential for every fan of country music, or music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Wanted: The Outlaws.......2007-05-28

I think this reissue of the 70's classic is a perfect example of less being more. I am not certain if any of the new additions make this CD better than the first version. In fact, to be honest, I think the first version is a 5 star classic, while this reissue overall deserves a solid 4 stars. My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys is the best of the bunch here, while the cover of Suspicious Minds is outstanding. I always loved the two songs from Colter, and I think the addition of more from her lessens the overall impact of You Mean to Say and Looking for Blue Eyes. A great CD. The sound here is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Classics!.......2007-03-09

I have wore mine out. I need to buy a new copy.

5 out of 5 stars Texas music.......2007-03-08

A real gem and the heart of the outlaw country music movement. The recent re-release with the songs added that didn't make the first album is a nice addition to any collection. Makes you wonder why they didn't include them the first time around. Who knows. If you thought it was great on vinyl you'll love it on cd, just a Fantastic album!

4 out of 5 stars Original Was Better.......2007-02-28

In agreement with most of the reviews here, if you love the 70's country music so-called outlaw movement, you will love the music here, I have the original on a still working 8 track, I was very excited to get an
expandanded edition of this on disk, but to be honest, the longer edition looses something for me, I do "like" Jessi Colter, but as we all know, she does not carry this album, extra tracks included 3 Jessi solos in a row, then 2 Jessi duets with Waylon, that part of the Cd was a bit much for me, but besides that one pont, this is still a great set of tunes and an essential part of country music history to own.

Though Willie Nelson's thematic albums in recent years have been hit-and-miss, this labor of love is a thorough delight. One Texas legend pays tribute to another and evokes the inspiration of a third, as Nelson puts his stylistic signature on the songbook of Cindy Walker, with arrangements channeling the spirit of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys (whose most familiar songs include many of Walker's). Nelson's conversational phrasing refreshes the familiar title track and brings out the soulful depths of heartfelt (and heartsick) balladry such as "Not That I Care." The nimble band features the interplay of Playboys alum Johnny Gimble on fiddle and the legendary Buddy Emmons on steel guitar, under the production of Nashville veteran Fred Foster. Saloon songs such as "Bubbles in My Beer" and "The Warm Red Wine" meet the mythic West of "Cherokee Maiden" and "Dusty Skies" and the weathered resilience of "Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age" and "I Don't Care," as the collection pays testament not only to Walker's range, but to Nelson's interpretive mastery. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Produced by Fred Foster, the man behind such stars as Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, & Kris Kristofferson, You Don't Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker is truly a return to form for Willie. The band performing on the record is made up of several of Nashville's premier session players, who successfully capture the spirit and sound of classic country music. All songs were written by Country Music Hall of Fame inductee (1997), Cindy Walker. At 87, she has a long list of writing credits to her name, which include: "Dusty Skies" recorded by Spade Cooley, Bob Wills, & The Sons of the Pioneers, "Cherokee Maiden" recorded by Bob Wills, Merle Haggard, & Mel Tillis, "Warm Red Wine" recorded by Ernest Tubb and George Jones, "You Don't Know Me" recorded by Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Jimmy Dean, Henry Mancini, & many more The single, "You Don't Know Me" was made most famous by Willie's close friend Ray Charles on The Modern Sounds of Country and Western Music. "I loved her music," Nelson says of Walker's catalog of playful saloon songs and heartfelt ballads. "Even before we met I felt like I knew her from listening to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys do her songs. Every night of the week as a teenager I was playing things like "Miss Molly" and "I Was Just Walking Out The Door" somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Put some money in the juke box........2007-06-16

On this CD, Willie Nelson sings songs written by the late Cindy Walker. He performs 13 of her songs here, which date from 1942 to 1963. Most of these songs were hits way back then for country music legends like Bob Wills, Eddy Arnold, Ernest Tubb, Red Foley and Webb Pierce. Interestingly, Miss Walker wrote most of these songs from a man's point of view, probably because there weren't many popular female country singers back then. (Kitty Wells was the first female country music superstar, and she didn't have her first hit until 1952.) These songs fit Willie Nelson like a glove, and he performs them quite well in his trademark style. I'm sure that Willie's fans will really enjoy this CD.

I've always liked Willie Nelson and this is one of his best albums. All songs are good - good easy listening.

5 out of 5 stars Willie Nelson sings the songs of Cindy Walker.......2007-05-09

This is my favorite CD that I've bought in a few years and I buy quite a few! The way Willie sings these songs are as if Cindy wrote them all for him. I can sit and listen to this CD over and over. Cindy was an amazing song writer -one of the greats, and Willie (also one of the greats) certainly does her songs justice.
This is a wonderful tribute CD to both Cindy and Willie Nelson. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, can't recommend this CD enough!
Be sure to add it to your collection if you haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD.......2007-01-07

5 out of 5 stars Willie sings Cindy.......2006-08-20

Cindy Walker has written some of the best known country songs for many, many years for some of the best artists we have had. "You Don't Know Me", "Sugar Moon", and "Cherokee Maiden" will delight any country music fan, especially if you like Willie Nelson and the flare he adds. "Bubbles In My Beer" is a fun song while "Take Me In Your Arms" can tug at your heart. This CD is a wonderful tribute to a lady who gave so much to the music industry.

Perhaps his superb three-CD box Revolutions of Time is a bit out of your price range. Maybe his 16 Biggest Hits collection feels a bit slight. This two-CD set works as a fair compromise between the two, although it lacks any discographical information or liner notes. Still, the music here is mostly breathtaking and is varied and balanced enough to provide a clear sense of Nelson's numerous strengths: a deft songwriting flair, a respect for country's traditions, a distinctive nasal twang, and a wonderful touch and feel on his gut-string guitar. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Willie Nelson's The Very Best of Willie.......2000-05-25

Various of Willie's songs of this album have been reviewed in detail by the editors and customers elsewhere in amazon.com, and I'll just say that On the Road Again and Pancho are some of the reasons why Willie Nelson is one of the three greatest people in the history of Country Music, in my opinion. They call these Outlaw Country. I call them Spirit of the Law Country. Letter of the Law asks where, who, what, when, how. Spirit of the Law asks why. Which one do you think gets the answer?

5 out of 5 stars Great songs by an all-time classic performer!.......1999-11-20

For better and for worse, this trans-generational pairing of Willie Nelson and producer Ryan Adams takes the veteran into musical territory where he wouldn't have likely ventured on his own. There's long been an organic unity to Nelson's signature sound--the way his conversational phrasing plays against the staccato runs of his gypsy guitar, with the backing of a band that's been with him so long he calls them Family. On Songbird, Adams substitutes the more aggressively electric backing of his own band, the Cardinals, and plainly had a large say in selecting and arranging the material. Two highlights that most bear his imprint are "Blue Hotel," which Adams wrote for the project and with which Nelson plainly connects, and the bluesy, ominous arrangement by Adams of the closing "Amazing Grace," which sounds closer to "House of the Rising Sun." At the other extreme, Nelson's lumbering take on the Grateful Dead's "Stella Blue," which culminates in an electric squall, sounds like the kind of music Willie would rather not listen to, let alone make. And the hard-edged riffing on "$1000 Wedding" practically bludgeons the Gram Parsons song to death. While the three Nelson originals (two old, one new) all work fine, the rest is hit (Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah") and miss (the title cut, by Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie). It has been said that Nelson can sing just about anything--which doesn't necessarily mean that he should. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Kick it off if you're ready........2007-07-03

This Willie Nelson album was released on Halloween, 2006. It was produced by Ryan Adams and features Adams and his band, The Cardinals. The music has an alt-county feel to it, not surprisingly. I like the album quite a bit, and was surprised to see several negative reviews of it. I suppose that means it's not for everyone's taste, but the same thing can be said for any album, can't it? Perhaps the negativity comes from Willie Nelson fans who don't appreciate the Ryan Adams influence on the album, or Ryan Adams fans who don't appreciate Willie's singing. Well, regardless of what the naysayers think, I like it. I especially like "Songbird", "Hallelujah" and "We Don't Run"; not that my opinion counts for more than anybody else's opinion. You shouldn't listen to me anyway, you should make up your own mind.

I first heard this song on the car radio and it grabbed me right away! It's fantastic. I hope it was a major hit for Willie because it is a very catchy tune that soars with his unique voice. I will eventually listen to the rest of the album but I can't stop playing Songbird!!!!!! My email address is now [...].

If you're a Ryan Adams fan you probably know that each album takes at least 7 listens through before one decides that it isn't crap-ola. And then slowly, magically even, the music starts to speak to you like nothing before. And then, you're hooked! This album is no different.

For Willie fans, just be patient and it will happen for you. Obviously this type of patience is not something you're accustomed to with Willie. But Remember 7 times through. Let Willie be free. Let Ryan Rock. And Let it Ride.

Album Description

What do Ryan Adams, Trey Anastasio, Jeff Beck, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths, Eric Clapton, Bootsy Collins, The Roots, Ben Harper, Terry Hall, The Skatalites, Willie Nelson, No Doubt, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, Shaggy, Rahzel, U-Roy, Bunny Wailer and Rachael Yamagata have in common?

The all-star guests on "true love" range from legends Like Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Bonnie Raitt to younger stars including No Doubt, The Roots, and Trey Anastasio. The caliber of these collaborators reveals the impact that Toots has had on several generations of rockers and rappers, while appearances from reggae icons Bunny Wailer and Marcia Griffiths show the respect granted to the man who might be the music's greatest living vocalist. At the heart of it all is that voice - drenched in soul, rooted in gospel, and still breathtakingly powerful after almost four decades in the spotlight.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent crossover of styles and talent.......2006-03-01

Entertaining and enjoyable listening. Nice remakes of classic Reggae songs using some crossover artists.

5 out of 5 stars A straight shot of feel good music.......2006-01-13

I didn't know Toots at all, but read a magazine review and gave it a chance. Boy have I been missing some great music. I listen on my commute home and arrive feeling happy and "cool" by association. If you love blues, Buffett, or Bonnie, this sound will hit you where you live. Not just for Reggae fans. Stop reading this and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Dandy! .......2005-10-01

Unlike one reviewer who sounded like he never did love Toots, this is one of my favorite albums by Toots and the Maytals and I have been listening to them for *many* years. Toots has never sounded better and he made all of the other artists who played along with him on the CD put in some of their finest performances, as well. There is hardly a track on here I don't love, but Still is Still Moving to Me, Pressure Drop, and Sweet and Dandy are some of my favorites... and Blame on Me with Rachel Yamagata (who I honestly had never heard of before) just burns me up. I love it. This is a work of art, unlike some of other compilations which I personally thought were either okay, like BB King's, or sounded like they were just inviting younger musicians to play on their albums to reach new audiences and sell more music, like Santana's. Carlos said he was trying to prove how older people could still get it down, then only invited young women to participate and shake it up. Not Toots, man, he knows what's cool and everyone was invited - young or old, you will love it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars My kind of music!.......2005-05-30

I have to admit that prior to purchasing this album I really had no knowledge of Toots' long history of making music. I always loved the sound of reggae - my dad listened to Hawaiian reggae while I was growing up - and I was ready for something fresh and new.

What I enjoy most about "True Love" is that Toots' vocals are never drowned out by his guest artists. He has a strong, almost bluesy sort of voice, and he really sounds like he enjoyed making these songs. It really amazes me that he was able to work with so many artists from such varied genres. "Pressure Drop" and "Monkey Man" easily satisfy my need for upbeat, fun, summer/spring sorts of songs while "Careless Ethiopians" and "Blame on Me" paint a landscape drenched in a darker, haunting tone. If I were to name a song that I do not care for too much, however, it would be his collaboration with Shaggy, I think mostly because Shaggy's vocals aren't too great on here.

5 out of 5 stars TOOTS GETS MY GRAMMY!.......2005-02-07

Toots is finally getting the recognition he deserves. One of the best reggae performers I've ever seen and this album is definitely one of the best. Love the cuts with Bonnie Rait and Willie Nelson and Marcia Griffiths. Toot Toot Toosie.....HELLO!
