4 out of 5 stars I was very pleased.......2003-06-03

... I decided to buy it mostly because of the cheap price. But after opening and playing it, I was really glad I bought it. Notice I only gave it 4 stars, but to me that is very good (5 stars are reserved for recordings of the utmost quality).

Some of these concertos might be familiar to the listener, as they were to me, if he has heard Bach's keyboard concertos. However, I have always felt that the oboe was the most beautiful of wind instruments, and I enjoyed hearing them in this new light.

While I am not an expert on the oboe, the playing seems very good, and the phrasing and touch of the strings could not be better. Here's one recording with which can't go wrong, whether you are new to classical music or a seasoned listener.

4 out of 5 stars Evidence of Changing Musical/Cultural Tastes.......2003-02-10

Amazing that such exquisite music lost interest in Bach's time. As experts have noted and these liner notes on this recording suggest, much of Bach's fame was not in his lifetime as musical tastes were changing.

Thus, much of his concerto for oboe need reconstruction. Here played ably by Hommel and backed by Cologne Chamber Orchestra.
Intonation and phrasing is adequate, at times a little too dark for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction to the music of J.S. Bach.......2002-08-30

This disc is as good an introduction to J.S. Bach as any I can think of. As the insightful liner notes indicate, Bach often used parts of earlier compositions while writing his 1730s concertos for harpsichord(s); researches into these concertos suggest that those included on this disc were originally written for oboe, and whether it's ultimately the case or not, this recording shines. Christian Hommel's restrained performance serves the music perfectly: each track features vast melodies and excellent ensemble-playing; meanwhile, the sound quality and balance couldn't have been better. This is pure, abstract music at its best: music whose power doesn't depend on what it might 'suggest' or 'represent', but only on its own language. And like all great music, the pieces on this disc become the springboards for contemplation that French painter Albert Gleizes yearned for in the early 1940s. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars J.S. Bach Oboe Concertos.......2001-09-10

J.S. Bach is my favourite. Of his music I probably love his concertoes most. The 5 concertoes on this CD are all reconstructions, according to the notes in the cover, i.e.the available scores by Bach himself are for other instruments:
mainly harpsichord. The assumption is that Bach had also made versions for other solo instruments at an earlier date.

I actually know each of the recorded pieces here played on either harpsichord, organ, violin or oboe. One of the concertoes, BWV 1053, as mentioned in the cover too, is shared with a cantata.I have it as BWV 169.

The all oboe versions here, I think, are definitely the most charming.

Amazon.com essential recording

Although Einstein on the Beach is by definition an opera, Philip Glass's most famous work also transcends traditional music categories. Glass avoided all vestiges of plot in the piece and dug deep into his quiver of repetitions to create an artfully unnerving five hours of brilliance. The instrumental ensemble never exceeds five members, playing electric keyboards, saxophones, flutes, and a single violin. Furthermore, the music congregates around the upper registers, often darting through its loops at seemingly incredible paces. The chorus bears huge chops, creating a dense, if silkenly staccato, series of juts, and a powerful array of higher-register annunciations that ring with the aural power of leaping, blurring filaments. This 1993 version of Einstein truly supersedes its predecessors, stretching to around 190 minutes over three CDs. There is a strong current of postmodern collage throughout the piece, with rafts of pop culture references. But Einstein, after all, is indeed based loosely on Albert Einstein and ends with booming allusions to nuclear annihilation and mathematics. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars "...it could be very fresh and clean.".......2007-04-18

Einstein On The Beach was first performed in 1976 and the first recording was released in 1979. This version of Einstein was release in 1993. To date, these existing reviews span a period of 8 years - which to me, is a testament to the significance of this masterwork.

And in the same spirit as another reviewer, I too must confess that I prefer the original recording over this revised, modified and re-recorded version. I will say that this version is not at all "bad" - it is excellent. But to me the heart of the music lies with the original recording. I can understand the desire to release a "newer" version of this recording, but unfortunately in it's more polished form, it has lost a great deal of charm and, as has been mentioned, humor. Oddly the readings in this new recording sound very affected and almost pretentious. The music here played with a digital perfection has a sense of more mechanicality and a less human feel than the previous release. Between the two versions, I think there is about 20 additional minutes on this re-recording than the earlier one, but for my taste this does not really add anything of startling consequence to the piece overall.

It is said that all music is mathemetics. And since we all know about Einstein and his love for the violin, it was an incredible intelligent choice to merge the two into a singular revolutionary concept. As the reader is aware: it is now generally recognized as one of the most significant contributions to late 20th century music and performance, and simultaneously re-defined the potential of opera.

So why buy this edition over the other? Honestly, I can't give you one solid reason. Both have positives and negatives. Get both. But listen to the earlier one first!

5 out of 5 stars Hard to fault.......2007-04-13

Before this, I'd only really heard Glass's solo piano music. Where I found his repetitive figures unmoving in that context, here - fleshed out with vocals and synths - they become something else, something hypnotic, beguiling and quite beautiful. Even over 3 hours, it is hard to tire of the gradually shifting rhythms, which move at break-neck speed.

It is hard to grasp the effect the music has by listening to the samples above, and you shouldn't think, 'well, this is fine - but for 3 hours?!' - as it is much more than the sum of its parts. That effect is akin to a visual illusion on an epic scale. Only musical, if you will.

This edition is hard to fault: it's very well recorded, despite the set being 14 years old and it's all very attractively packaged. The booklet is thorough, although I would have liked to see some colour photos from the performance, not just the badly reproduced black & white ones we are provided with. That aside, well worth the money.

1 out of 5 stars unironic, inferior to original recording.......2006-03-01

Einstein on the Beach is one of the great works of music/theatre (as opposed to opera, or even traditional "musical theatre") of the 20th century, but the rerecording suffers from the bloated, cheap pretentiousness that characterizes almost all of Philip Glass's later work. Dilettantes criticize the original for the "artificial" timbre of the synthesizers, ignorant of the idea that the sound of the synthesizers are part of the piece as a historical text, or that the grating sound of the original recording actually emphasizes the formal qualities of Glass's minimalism. Utterly lacking in the irony and wit that made the first not only fascinating, but a pleasure to listen to, the rerecording is just dull.

4 out of 5 stars "...and I wasn't tempted to buy one...".......2006-02-26

I seem to be in the minority, but I prefer the original recording. What this version gains in performance and sonics, it loses in bite and immediacy. I came to Glass from rock music. The earlier recording had attitude and human energy. This one is fine art. I guess it depends what you're in the mood to hear.

The text has been altered quite a bit. I can live with everything except the new "Mr. Bojangles"; for some reason, Glass decided that the speaker should EMOTE in an odd self-conscious way. It doesn't work. The deadpan humor is gone.

The new sax line in "Building" (formerly "Building/Train") seems to have wandered in from a different universe. We're zooming through a mathematical soundworld ... and there's Kenny G. This piece has been extensively revised. The old version suggested a train at full throttle. This version is much slower, with muted organ and a meditative vibe.

The "Bed" aria is technically flawless (a definite "improvement"), but it doesn't have the plaintive, haunting feel of the first recording. This singer has a strong, formal, "operatic" style.

Someone was wondering why the earlier version was a 4-CD set. The reason is, it was originally a 4-LP box. At the time, 4 vinyl records meant 4 shiny compact discs. CDs were still a strange new medium for rich people. It took a while for the public to demand longer discs and lower prices.

5 out of 5 stars Freakish.......2006-02-12

Philip Glass will always be the finest when it comes to Classical Minimalism. Just listen to this 3-disc set of Einstein on the Beach. It's dazzling, dizzying, and menacingly addictive to hear. Definitely gets fives stars from me.

I'd also recommend Glass's film score to the movie "Koyaanisqatsi." It's as bold as Einstein on the Beach.

An avant-garde ensemble playing the 1978 Brian Eno piece which put ambient music on the map. Eno's idea was to make a series of tape loops into tightly composed Muzak. He wanted a sonic backdrop for bland public spaces that would reward close listening. Bang on a Can, playing acoustic and electric instruments, breathe life into it, making the music's neutrality seem coldly beautiful. The piece is divided into four parts, each consisting of a few gentle, minimal figures, calmly repeated and shifted. Rhythm is eliminated and time seems to stretch. What is revealed is the sensuousness possible in a single note. Music has never been the same. This is the best place to hear where it changed. --Steve Tignor

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars stupid and not Eno. Zero stars........2006-12-28

Its not an Eno album, but its credited to him.

Yes, I know, its "bang on a can", but it lists him as primary regardless. It should not.

The compositional process for the original is Algorithmic. treating it like a reproduceable composition is like trying to repaint Pollack's "Blue Poles". You could, but why?

As a lifetime fan of Eno, I find this product absurd and misleading.

Airports is a masterpiece.
This is a piece of something else.

5 out of 5 stars Eno gone wild.......2005-09-27

Bang On A Can's version of "Music for Airports" adds a jangly depth to Eno's more compressed version. They've managed to use the studio to create space in an already swiss cheese like piece. But the key difference here is the space is much more stark than Eno, thanks to the startling presence of their instruments, which rattle and drone and twitter expressively. The quiet becomes the space for anticipation of the instruments. so rather than the steady rolling pulse of Eno's, you get more up and down with BOAC's version.

It doesn't improve on Eno's piece. I think in some way, it vindicates Eno's abilities as a composer.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2005-04-25

I have known the original Eno version intimately for years, so I approached this CD with a question: Does it add anything to the original? The short answer is one part does, two maybe do and one part doesn't. The first part (arranged by Michael Gordon) is the least satisfying. It doesn't seem to add anything to the original Eno version apart from an unsettling deep piano chord at the start. It sounds awkward and clumsy, and it lacks the smooth beauty of the original. Part two consists of mostly aetherial voices, as did Eno's, but on this version David Lang has fleshed it out with subtle additions that work quite well. Third section brings out a slight jazz flavour to the original, which is interesting although I have yet to decide whether I like that angle or not! The best part is the final part, which certainly adds to the original Eno composition. Eno's rich, chorale of synths has been enhanced by the addition of some interesting instruments, e.g. plucked instruments, that really brings out some novel textures in the piece. So, overall, three stars - one for each reasonable piece on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Takes the recording out of the studio.......2003-09-26

By taking Brian Eno's legendary ambient cornerstone album "Music for Airports" out of the studio, i.e. by recording it with live musicians in real time, avant-garnd ensemble Bang on a Can present us with quite a masterpiece, considering the original work was conceived as a piece solely with synthesizers and tape loops in mind (and at hand) when the music was first put together over two decades ago.

After interpreting works of the great minimalists Steve Reich and Terry Riley it would only seem appropriate for them to be the most appropriate pick to give new life to Eno's seminal ambient work, and they do an extraordinary job at it, in my opinion. The result is an album (an exec. production by Philip Glass, by the way) that is true to the source while adding new instruments to it in a process that counted with Eno's blessing all along the way.

5 out of 5 stars not what i expected!.......2003-05-15

so, i bought this CD thinking i was getting the 'brian eno' version... but no; it was the 'bang on a can' version! hmmm, 'bang on can' doesn't exactly conjure up "ambient" music.
well, i gave it try and man am i impressed! i'm not sure how this stacks up to the original, but this is awesome mood music!
highly recommended! ranks right up there with eno's "apollo" disk.

2 out of 5 stars Kelly Hops Again!.......2001-04-01

Compared to the "original" cast album, which was the two writers and a piano, this album is a dream. Still, it would have been great to hear the original orchestrations instead of a studio band. The performances on this CD give the show some credibility, unlike the first album. One wants to see more of this type of thing done. But put in the original orchestrations. How about Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Yearling, La Strada? If you are a serious collector nab this while you can.

4 out of 5 stars A FITTING TRIBUTE TO MOOSE CHARLAP.......2001-03-22

HAVING BEEN ONE OF THE VERY FEW WHO SAW "KELLY" in 1965,I WAS VERY PLEASED TO FIND THIS STUDIO RECORDING OF THE ORIGINAL MUSIC. I DO MEAN ORIGINAL. SOME OF THE SONGS THAT WERE WRITTEN WERE LATER REMOVED BY A GROUP OF PANIKY PRODUCERS PRIOR TO THE NEW YORK OPENING. THEIR ACTIONS RESULTED IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHOW THAN HAD BEEN ENVISIONED BY THE COMPOSERS. IT ALSO MADE "KELLY" A MONUMENTAL FLOP SO MUCH SO THAT ITS DEMISE WAS THE SUBJECT OF A COVER STORY IN "SATURDAY EVENING POST". IF YOU READ THE CD NOTES..IT IS ALL EXPLAINED THERE. THE CD IS DEDICATED TO MOOSE CHARLAP. THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, INCLUDING BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES (TITANIC) AND RIGHT OUT OF THE 60'S, SANDY STEWART. IT MAY HAVE SOME SHORTCOMINGS, BUT OVERALL..EDDIE LAWRENCE SCORED WITH THIS CD!

3 out of 5 stars WHERE ARE THE ORIGINAL SONGS?.......2000-02-10

TO START OFF WITH. THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A BROADWAY CAST ALBUM. IT SOUNDS LIKE AN OFF BROADWAY ALBUM BY LISTENING TO THE ORCHESTRA. IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE A BAND THAN AN ORCHESTRA. SECOND,I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL SHOW. WELL, READINNG MY BEST PLAYS OF 1964-1965, THEY LIST THE SONGS ON OPENING NIGHT AND A BUNCH OF SONGS ARE NOT ON THE ALBUM AND SONGS ON THE ALBUM ARE NOT LISTED IN THE BOOK. I AM CONFUSED. ANWAY, WHATEVER IS ON THE CD IS FAIR. ALL THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, BUT LISTENING TO THE CD, IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH. PRETTY AVERAGE MUSIC. TAKE A LESSON FROM THE DRAT!THE CAT! RECORDING ON VARESE SARABANDE. NOW THATS A GREAT STUDIO CAST ALBUM. I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY PICKED KELLY OVER MANY OTHER SHOWS THAT HAVE A MUCH BETTER SCORE THAT WERE NEVER RECORDED LIKE THE BODY BEAUTIFUL OR SHERRY OR LOVELY LADIES, KIND GENTLEMAN TO NAME A FEW. IF YOU ARE A BROADWAY SHOW COLLECTOR THAN THIS SHOULD BE IN YOUR COLLECTION, OTHERWISE, I WOULD PASS.

    5 out of 5 stars Finest interpretation.......2007-06-24

Especially at this price you should compare these performances to any others.
Blacher was the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic in the 90's, a
graduate of Julliard and these are, I feel, the best recorded renditions of
    these works.

4 out of 5 stars Great performance on BWV 1052!.......2007-01-08

I bought this CD several years ago. I listened to it then and felt the speed was a bit too fast for my taste, so I put the CD into my suitcase and left it alone.

I played this CD again recently by occasion and listen to the Concerto in D minor (BWV 1052). I was still a bit uncomfortable about the fast speed at first, but I was very impressed by the nice and smooth performance by the Cologne group. So I decided to listen to it a few more times to see if I can get used to the speed. Well, I did! Now I like version a lot and I put it to my favorite playlist for daily enjoyment. Even though I'm not a professional musician, I believe this version is one of the valuable ones out there and many Bach listeners would appreciate it.

This CD also contains Violin Concerto in A minor and E major. For those two concertos, J. Brezina / Camerata Romana version has been my long-time favorite.

I think if we can get one great piece of music in one CD with the low price like this one, we should be happy.

5 out of 5 stars Quality country ballads with echoes of Patsy Cline.......2004-03-14

Lisa is one of many talented singers that were given a chance on a major label only to disappear back into obscurity when the first album failed to sell. Country music wasn't always like this. For example, Reba McEntire had two flop albums before making a breakthrough with her third album. So, this is Lisa's only album but it's a classic. It does not have any up-tempo songs on it and that may have its downfall - this was 1993 when country music was boosted by interest in line-dancing, therefore up-tempo songs were in big demand. The style of the album is a blend of traditional and nineties country with Patsy Cline being an obvious influence. There are electric guitars, drums and strings but the steel guitarist, Sonny Garrish, makes his presence felt clearly, with there is also a fiddle and other acoustic instruments.

There is some variation in pace, with some mid-tempo songs providing a contrast to the slow songs. The three singles released were Somebody's in love, Drive time and Under the light of the Texaco, all of them excellent but none of them making sufficient impact to help album sales. Some of the other songs have been recorded by others including That makes one of us (Forester sisters) and There goes the neighbourhood (Shania Twain) but the most famous song here is the sixties country classic, Don't touch me. Originally a country hit for Jeannie Seely, many country singers have covered it since then.

Two of the other songs (If I was her, Forgive and forget) were co-written by Lisa Angelle, who has been a successful songwriter in recent years. She released an album of her own eventually but, like Lisa Stewart, was unable to release a follow-up. The final track, Is it love, was co-written by Byron Gallimore, who has been very successful as a songwriter and producer for Jo Dee Messina and others. Great as all these songs are, my favorite is Old-fashioned broken heart, an outstanding traditional country ballad with aching steel guitar.

This is a brilliant album of country love songs. It is a pity that record companies are so ruthless these days. Given a fair chance, Lisa could have been a major star.

        5 out of 5 stars A True Treasure.......2004-07-16

If you love Bach's music, and the oboe, you will certainly love this cd! My absolute favourite for the oboe, without a doubt! Delightfully beautiful music! Such wonderfully sweeping melodies!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful oboe music.......1999-03-28

The harpsichord version of some of these concerti does not do these works justice. One cannot appreciate BWV 1055 and BWV 1053, for instance, on the harpsichord as much as one can appreciate them played on the oboe. The melodies are more noticeable here. Nothing gets lost in all that continuo playing. The first low oboe note that presents itself in the first track is enough to engage one's curiosity. Afterward, it's just enjoyment. These are beautiful recordings, and perhaps the only CD to offer the combination of these five CDs. The sound as well is divinely clear.
