A good collection of her work.......2005-01-22
It also includes some samples of her pop covers of R&B hits like "You Send Me" and "Pledging My Love," which I like better than the Sam Cooke and Johnny Ace originals. (But then, I generally like pop covers of R&B songs better than the originals!)
Probably, if you want only one Teresa Brewer collection, this is the one to get.

The finest set of western swing ever. Timeless fun!.......2006-07-07
Good Luck in trying to find something better !.......2006-06-21
Keep in mind that this music ain't for everybody. If you like spending time listening to the likes of a feuding Toby with the Dixie Chicks then this real Roots Music ain't for you. But if you would be willing to sell your top coon hound to get the money to get tickets to see "Asleep at the Wheel" then you might be a fan that can apperciate what was started by Bob & Milton way down in Texas back in the early 30's.
While I type this review I'm listening to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys perform "Faded Love" on my computer so I'll cut it short. Buy this set - at this price you can't afford not too. While you are at it do what I did and get the "Proper Records - Bob Wills/Take Me Back To Tulsa" also - you will be Blessed !

A Great Overview Of Western Swing.......2005-06-16
It's not country, it's not cowboy, it's not swing, it's just great toe-tapping fun music!
The songs in this album are presented in chronological order thus allowing the listener to experience the growth and progression of this great music.
The songs are remastered originals and the sound quality is first rate.
There's also a booklet containing liner notes about all the artists and a discography.
I own several box sets by Proper and every single one is a bargain, well worth far more than the asking price.
Musical history that is alive and well today.......2004-09-13
Western Swing is Western Folk Jazz no Hillbillies here!.......2003-12-12
This music has little to do with what was considered Country music at the time or its emasculated mutant descendants in Nashville.
This was not marketed as Country music. In fact in 1945 when Bob Wills, the acme of Western SWing, was the biggest grossing public attraction in the entertainment business, he had his sole invitation to the Grand Ole Opry, and then he almost walked out of there before he played a song because the hayseeds wouldn't let him bring on his drums and horns (not allowed onthe Opry until the late 1950s!).
Western Swing comes from Jazz from the pop Jazz of the 20s and early 1930s, included people who went back and forth between bands like Wills and Spade Cooley to the white big bands (though Bob Wills once tried to hire a black alto player[against the law in Oklahoma] and of late Les Paul has taken to claiming he saw Charlie Christian sit in with the Playboys at Cains and there are pictures of the Playboys having drinks in Chicago with black Jazz greats like Ben Webster!!). Townsend Wills' biographer interviewed many Playboys and none of them felt they were part of Country, but part of Jazz.
Basically it begins with people trying to play Jazz and Blues influenced music with the instruments of the old Southwestern Barn dance bands: guitar, fiddle, piano, adding in drums, and in many bands all the instruments of the Jazz orchestras. Very quickly Bobby Dunne added in the electric Hawaii, pedaless steel guitar and Leon McAuliffe who replaced him in the Doughboys and went with Wills was so well known that Bob Wills' introduction to him "Take it Away Leon" became a catch phrase in the whole country and beyond in the 1940s!
At its most hyperbolic height (captured here in the Space Cooley Orchestra's Oklahoma Stomp, a recording anyone with a set of ears should treasure) you had 16 and 18 piece orchestras with full fiddle sections (in the early 1960s Wills even rounded his fiddles with a violist from the Lawrence Welch band!), complete reed sections, and more brass than they needed, and exotic additions like the Harpist who kicks off The Oklahoma Stomp.
Further on than these recordings go, you would have players like Tiny Moore and Johnny Gimble who incorporated Bebop styles in their solos.
Along the way, mostly during that war time period when recording bans and players going in and out of the army and different bands make following a little harder, the straight western swing style of combining a guitar, steel guitar, and sometimes electric mandolin trio alternating with fiddle choirs took hold as the paradigm for Western Swing. For some reason in most bands the horns seemed to disappear or roll down to just one after WWII.
One thing about this music is that a very high level of musical technique and education became more and more part of the Western Swing environment. We know that European Jazmen like Stephan Grappelli followed the recordings of Hugh Farr who played with the sons of the pioneers and later Spade Cooley, and that Down Beat magazine described Eldon Shamblin out of Bob Wills' band as the best rythm guitar player in the country (slighting Freedie Green who even Eldon probably acknowledge was better).
The other thing in contrast with much of what was being presented as country music contemporaneously is that this was not being presented as "old time music," craddling close to old conventions, but a new hot dangerous music, drawn as close as comfort would allow from Black sources, from the dangerous white swing bands, and from the part of down home music involved in drinking, dancing, cheating, and other things not permitted in the Baptist Southeast.
WSM Grand Old Opry Stars toured the deep South playing in school auditoriums, church houses, and public squares. From the beginning Western swing belonged in barrooms, in dance halls, and other places where "the wine and liquor flow." Even Hank Williams wasn't allowed to use the word "beer" when he sang "My Bucket's got a hole in it" on the Opry. Meanwhile Western Swingers like Wills and Brown were singing about Cocaine and Opium, whiskey and beer back in the early 1930s.
And Smokie Woods wasn't called smokie cause he liked Tobacco. LOL. In fact his tune here called "Everybody's Trukin," about what is done "up in Harlem" includes much use of a word that does sound like truckin', but does not contain an r or a T but does start with an F!!
No this is not Nashville Country or even old time country music. This is Western guys and gals trying to be jazzy, bluesy, wild, whiskey soaked, drug high, hip to the secrets of Negroid nights of "truckin," playing their hearts out fast hot and heavy!
Anyone with ears should own this collection!
ps another wierd side note to this is on the great Hit\
"Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette)" both Tex Williams who sang it and Merle Travis who wrote it died of lung cancer!

The truth is that Suzy Bogguss, whose early music reflected her love of Western tunes and yodeling, never really fit into assembly-line Nashville. Rarely did her major-label producers allow her to reveal her true self. This time, she reveals nothing but that. Masterfully produced by Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson, she's at home with every tune, be it time-honored jazz chestnuts like Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" and Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" or fresh, witty contemporary numbers by Nashville jazz chanteuse-writer April Barrows. Benson, who duets with Bogguss on Barrows's "Cupid Shot Us Both with One Arrow," wisely avoids using a big band. Instead, he surrounds her with a small band of Asleep at the Wheel alumni--including pianist Floyd Domino and driving, Stuff Smith-inspired fiddler Jason Roberts--that provides a sharper, more deft accompaniment than any bigger band could. Liberated from Music Row's relentless pursuit of radio-friendly mediocrity, Bogguss has at last nailed it to the wall with this smart, elegant, and joyous effort. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

David Grisman's duo project with Scottish jazz guitarist Taylor, is a sequel to 1994's Tone Poems by Grisman and Tony Rice. That one explored the bluegrass side of Grisman's music through the use of vintage fretted instruments, and Poems II explores the jazz side the same way. As the lavishly illustrated, 48-page booklet that comes with this single CD explains, the 19 tunes on Tone Poems II are sequenced in the order they were written and are played on instruments built within a few years of the composition. Thus "Blue Moon," written by Richard Rodgers in 1934, is played on a 1935 Epiphone Deluxe guitar by Taylor and on a 1932 Epiphone Windsor mandolin by Grisman. A must for vintage-instrument obsessives. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Enjoy some early gems from Maestro May !!!.......2007-04-15
The CD begins with a swinging rendition of the classic "All Of Me." The horns carry a lot of the melody, as was often the case with May's orchestrations. The percussion, drums and piano enhance the beauty of this number.
Other great numbers on this CD include the hot "Lulu's Back In Town" with an awesome saxophone helping out the horns section; and the romantic and slower paced ballad "When My Sugar Walks Down The Street." "Charmaine" gets a sophisticated arrangement that left me breathless! In addition, we also get a 1950s Latin beat for "Perfidia;" and "Tenderly" shows us just how romantic trombones, trumpets and saxophones can really be. How elegant!
Listeners will recognize some very famous ballads, too: We get "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me)" with a big band flavor which will positively charm you; the playful older number entitled "Little Brown Jug" and the swinging-ist rendition of "Makin' Whoopee" you ever heard! The horns, drums, percussion, guitar are in perfect synch as May conducts his orchestra to perfection.
The CD ends strong with "Dixieland Band." This number gets the big band treatment May was so famous for; and "Dixieland Band" will leave you wanting more! Love that Latin beat that May inserts into "Dixieland Band" midway through the number! I doubt you'll put this one away and just forget about it--you'll be playing this CD again and again for quite some while to come!
The liner notes provide an extensive essay about Billy May's career written by Joop Visser; and the art work reflects good judgment, too. You also get the song credits and there is a clear listing of who played which instrument in the liner notes as well.
Billy May's talent cannot be forgotten; and it is a blessing we have great CDs like this one to prove his was a most impressive talent. If you like this CD, I recommend other CDs by Billy May & His Orchestra including the import CD entitled Plays The Standards by Billy May and two-fer CDs that offer the content of two Billy May record albums on one CD including A Band Is Born/Big Band Bash. In addition, fans of that terrific big band sound from the 1940s and early 1950s will cherish this CD.
Sit back and enjoy the ride!

As someone who's new to Patsy Cline's music..........2007-02-17
They butchered those beautiful songs.......2006-11-28
A few gems in a well-intentioned mess.......2006-03-24
For the bad, "I Fall to Pieces" is an amazing heartbreaking song and Natalie Cole is completely unequipped to sing it (at least she didn't sing it as a duet with Patsy a la Unforgettable.) Norah Jones and Michelle Branch, two talented singers dealing with their own material, are unable to pull their respective numbers off (incidentally, Norah fares much better on "Just Because I'm a Woman" a similiar but much more successful tribute to Dolly Parton.) Diana Krall's reading of "Crazy" is strangely flat, as is kd Lang's washed-out "Leavin on Your Mind." The latter was particularly surprising because at first glance I expected this to be the standout track. Patty Griffin's rendition of "Faded Love" might have been good but seems drowned by the production.
There is yet some hope for this CD though. Lee Ann Womack does a brilliant, wrenching version of "She's Got You" and Terri Clark smokes on "Walking After Midnight." Amy Grant's cover of "Back in Baby's Arms" is suprisingly good as well. The final track is an a capella rendition of "Sweet Dreams" by Martina McBride with backing vocals from Take 6. Although I didn't really enjoy Take 6's contribution, this was well-executed otherwise.
While cover versions can often be an interesting twist or occasional improvement on the original, I think buying a Patsy Cline album would be a much better use of your hard-earned money OR look into Loretta Lynn's "Sings Patsy Cline's Favorites."
Patsy was one of a kind ..........2005-11-18
Two other cuts miss the mark: Natalie Cole's approach to "I Fall to Pieces," well, falls flat - primarly because Natalie Cole's singing style is somewhere between a bray and a whine. And I have issues with Martina McBride and Take 6's version of "Sweet Dreams," largely because they're so enamored of the soundscape that the song gets completely lost in the shuffle.
But the other cuts are pretty snazzy, each for a different reason. Norah Jones' reading of "Why Can't He Be You?" conveys just the right air of ambivalence. Amy Grant's Texas swing-style arrangement of "Back in Baby's Arms" captures the good cheer of the song, and some of its sass as well. Diana Krall's rendition of "Crazy" proves not only that a great song is a great song in ANY setting, but also that a smart musician with a fresh approach can reveal new meaning in a song you've heard a zillion times. Michelle Branch's "Strange" is a bit, um, strange, in that she has an oddly unpleasant voice - and yet her interpretation somehow works. Terri Clark puts some muscle into "Walkin' After Midnight," Rebecca Lynn Howard tears the roof off of "You're Stronger Than Me," Lee Ann Womack gets to the emotional meat of "She's Got You," and Patti Griffin imbues "Faded Love" with such sadness and a sense of loss that I almost don't miss the ragged intake of breath that made Patsy's original such a stunner.
And then there's k.d. lang. The perfect, velvety vocals ... the powerful sound and equally powerful feeling ... the world-weary, "I've been through this before and I know what's coming" tone ... this is one brilliant recording. Never afraid to take a song apart and put it back together again, she's one of the truly great singers of this - or any - generation.
I'm a bit mystified by the reviewers here who seem to feel this CD doesn't qualify as a "tribute" because the singers, for the most part, bring their own individual style to their tracks. Isn't that what Patsy herself did, to the everlasting good fortune of us all?
