5 out of 5 stars Rarities...an absolute gem.......2006-09-05

Great album, bringing together three of the great songwriter-poets of our time, who along with Blaze Foley constitute a world unto themselves. They got together to perform this benefit for a Dental Clinic! Townes even comments that he can't get dental (or any) insurance. All three are tight and brilliant, but the most heart rendering songs in this collection belong to Guy. The man is a treasure - he plays one of those guitars that he made himself (yes!!), it sounds beautiful..the same care and thoughtfulness is present in the songs..buy this...today!!
Oh..one correction to the other review on this page: Lucinda Williams' Drunken Angel isn't about Townes, but about Blaze Foley.

5 out of 5 stars Hello, Is Anybody Out There?.......2006-03-09

I find it hard to believe that no one has reviewed this beautiful album. So I'll give it a go.
If you're a fan of one or all of these artists, you'll love this album. The intimacy of the live performance in what sounds like a very small cafe is perfect. These guys write personal songs. Songs that are sometimes very, very close to the heart.
Guy Clark, for some reason, is an unknown treasure. His songs have no peer. Steve Earle is a rebel with a cause. And Townes Van Zandt is the drunken angel and poet that Lucinda Williams sang about.
My advice: listen and learn.
And thanks to the reviewer above regarding my Drunken Angel comments. I stand corrected.
But Townes was a bit of a drunken angel himself, I would say.

On September 13, 1995, this like-minded triumvirate of country-folk singer-songwriters joined forces for a good old-fashioned song swap. The music's warmth and relaxed vibe make it sound like it was recorded on someone's back porch in Texas as opposed to Nashville's Bluebird Café. Pulled together for an Interfaith Dental Clinic benefit by Guy Clark's wife Susanna, the three old friends sing songs and tell stories in an intimate acoustic-and-a-stool atmosphere in front of an appreciative audience--what more can you ask for when you have such compelling songwriters? The ravenous cult fans of these artists will want to add these delightful performances to their collections, but newcomers will get an engaging and useful primer on the modern Texas troubadour style. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Great company for lonely nights.......2006-07-17

Townes Van Zandt's performance on this album made me appreciate his earlier recordings all the more, but he was still my favorite of the three. Hearing him do "Pancho and Lefty" in that rusty old voice made me weep, and his monologue about having a gold tooth extracted as a gambling debt made me laugh till I wept. It means even more now, knowing that this was very likely one of his last public appearances.

Anyone expecting perfection here will be disappointed. But it's the roughness of this performance that makes it so damned endearing.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Brilliant Songwriters in a Relaxed Setting.......2006-03-18

Did you ever wonder what would happen if three of America's best songwriters got together to share songs and stories? This disk answers the question. Earle, Van Zandt and Clark are arguably among the best songwriters this country has to offer (Texas branch) and on this disk they share their songs with each other in round-robin fashion before a very small audience. Stripped of studio arrangements, the three performers proudly display their wares for what they are - classic songs that ought to last long after the songwriters are dead and gone.
All three performers are (were, actually - Van Zandt died a few years back) great friends, with tremendous mutual respect for each other, so the camaraderie and friendship heard here is a rare and special thing. It must have been quite a special evening at the Bluebird Café that night. If you're a fan of any one of these three performers, then this disk is well worth your attention, since I can guarantee that you will soon become a big fan of the other two as well. A- - Tom Ryan

2 out of 5 stars Why songwriters are not always good performers.......2005-01-21

When I first saw this cd, I thought "This has got to be great!"
I love all these guys, and I figured this cd has to be just wonderful! Wrong! After listening to as much as I could stand, I now realize why these wonderful songwriters sell their songs. With the exception of Steve Earle, (who also bombed on this cd),
I don't think any of these guys are singers at all. You may not like this, fans, but I would definitely skip this one. Just my opinion, I only gave them a 2 for their songwriting.
