A Hundred Miles or More carries the subtitle A Collection, and what a curious collection it is--cuts from soundtracks, side projects, and tribute albums, plus guest duets on other artists' albums and five previously unreleased tracks. In other words, this is a collection of Alison Krauss performances that have never appeared on an Alison Krauss album, though it holds together better than such a grab-bag approach might suggest. Highlights such as her duet with Brad Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby" and her a cappella rendition of "Down to the River to Pray" from O Brother, Where Art Thou? will be familiar to most Krauss fans, though it's doubtful that many share her infatuation with retro rocker John Waite (with whom she revives his "Missing You" and duets on a cover of Don Williams's "Lay Down Beside Me."). Other projects represented range from Disney to the Chieftains to the Louvin Brothers (she duets with James Taylor on their "How's the World Treating You." There's minimal contribution from her Union Station band--making this a solo release by default--and little information to indicate whether the previously unreleased tracks were outtakes from earlier releases or recently recorded for this one. --Don McLeese More Alison Krauss

A poll-winning fiddler since her teens, Alison Krauss was an established bluegrass star when her label persuaded her to step out from her usual projects with Union Station, her crack band, and sanction this compilation of various band and solo guest performances. The ploy worked, yielding a wonderful, odds-beating crossover hit with Krauss's cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," a carousing late-'60s pop chant transformed into a delicate, vulnerable declaration of love. Focusing on Krauss's lovely, yearning soprano, the track elevated the musician above her resolutely democratic role in her quintet, catapulting Krauss to the biggest bluegrass success story in over 30 years. Krauss has stayed true to her bluegrass roots, as well as to Union Station, but this cross-section of contemporary bluegrass songs, joyous gospel, and canny rock covers testifies to the young artist's luminous appeal. --Sam SutherlandCustomer Reviews:

As a superstar who's revered by both the young country audience and traditionalists, Alan Jackson is at his finest when he's steers clear of trifles like "Chattahoochie" and takes those younger fans to school. Here he does just that by paying respects to Hank ("Midnight in Montgomery"), swearing allegiance to George Jones ("Don't Rock the Jukebox"), and calling out all those newcomers who've decided it's time to get twangy now that country's hot ("Gone Country"). All of it pales next to "Here in the Real World," however, as perfect a honky-tonk weeper as mainstream Nashville has produced in 30 years. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

Anyone who is still clueless about what a great singer Ronnie Dunn is need only grab this second greatest-hits package from Brooks & Dunn, a 17-song compilation that skims the commercial high points from the duo's 1998-2004 period. Dunn, the quintessential balladeer, soars on honky-tonk laments and reminiscences like "Red Dirt Road" and "How Long Gone," and on full-throated romantic plaints like "That's What She Gets for Loving Me" and "It's Getting Better All the Time." His sidekick, the underrated guitarist, utility singer, and all-around dynamo Kix Brooks, also gets his moment to shine on a marvelous '60s-style, 18-wheeler ditty called "Independent Trucker," one of three new cuts included here. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:

and mid 80's. His incredible deep baritone voice + the wonderfully
arranged melodies scored hit after hit. During those days I collected
each and every LP launched on the market because, besides the hits,
all other songs were beautiful as well. Like so many other great C&W
artists of the 70's and 80's he stopped having success around '89 when
producers decided to change country music into pop music and struggle
for the Hot 100. That was the end of 3 full decades of authentic C&W
music. A real pity!
My opinion.......2007-06-11
My favourite though, has got to be 'You're My Best Friend". In this Don uses the soft gentleness of his voice to tell of his friendship with his wife.
There are many of his great songs also, I'm Just A Country Boy - Tulsa Time - Good Ole Boys Like Me and Listen To The Radio mixed with some that I hadn't heard before. Don sings sad and heartbreaking songs without being morbid.
All in all, it is a good mix of great country songs from one of the best in the business. Hard to beleive he's just turned 68.

Album Description
Just like the lead character in his classic composition "Mr. Bojangles," Jerry Jeff Walker steps to a different tune. He gave himself the perfect title when he wrote his autobiography Gypsy Songman. Some consider "gypsy" a euphemism for irresponsible, some consider it eccentricity, and some call it artistic license, but whatever you want to label it, it was the fuel that provided the fire in Walker to write the songs he wrote. Walker writes from his own experience. He can take a microcosm of a thought and elaborate enough for its poetry to shine through. Gypsy indeed - this is a man who even chose his own name. Born Ronald Clyde Crosby in 1942, the youngster grew up in Oneonta, New York, surrounded by music. His grandmother played piano, his parents loved to dance and he spent hours listening to their Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong records. It was his grandmother who bought him his first guitar at Christmas when he was 12 and he learned a few chords from the man who owned the local pizza parlor. The "Jerry" part of his name came from a false I.D. he got when he was 19, since the drinking age was 21. For several years, he went by the name on that card--Jerry Ferris. After going AWOL from the National Guard in the early '60s, and settling in New Orleans (officially moving to Texas in 1971), he chose a new name. He liked the name Jeff and then partly as a tribute to a black jazz pianist he had befriended, Kirby Walker, he chose the surname of Walker. The friends who knew him as "Jerry" couldn't make the switch as easily, so Ronald Crosby, aka Jerry Ferris, became Jerry Jeff Walker.Customer Reviews:

more greats from a one of a kind man.......2007-07-04
This is another great CD of hits by Tom T. Hall. Two days ago, I got to hear him on XM radio, interviewed by Bill Anderson, and a couple of songs from this album were mentioned. He mentioned not being allowed to sing "I Love," on network TV, because one of the things he loves is, grass. The Tv censor took "Grass," to mean pot. Any fan of Tom T. Hall knows that would be the furthest thing from his mind when he mentioned grass. He was of the generation which, if he wanted to alter his mind, would do it with beer. see "I like Beer." "Deal," "Fox on the Run," and "Old Side of Town," were totally new to me when I got this, and I love them all. "Old Side of Town," sounds like a George Jones song. "Homecoming," was first offered to Bill Anderson himself, who passed on it, letting Tom T. take it into orbit. just some of the good stuff on this excellent CD.
Great sampling of a great talent!.......2007-06-09
For Tom T. Hall Fans.......2007-02-06
Country music storyteller.......2006-11-16
Tom wrote and recorded songs that told stories - little vignettes of everyday life. Other country singers did this too, but only as a part of what they did. For Tom, story songs were what mattered. You want typical love songs? Look elsewhere. Yes, Tom sometimes sang about love but, like everything else, he told it in a story.
This collection includes all his country top ten hits plus his own recording of Harper Valley PTA, a song that he wrote but which became a huge international hit for Jeannie C Riley. Her version, which sold over four million copies, topped the American charts but didn't quite make the top ten in the UK.
Among Tom's classics here are Old dogs children and watermelon wine (my favorite), Faster horses, I like beer, Ballad of forty dollars, I love, Country is, That song is driving me crazy and The year that Clayton Delaney died.
Conspicuous by their absence are Sneaky snake and One hundred children. They may not have reached the country top ten but they are among his best songs and certainly better known than some of the songs that are included here. Still, I've yet to see a compilation that includes all Tom's classic songs. Other compilations that include those two miss out other classics - and that includes the double CD boxed set, which (as I said in my review of it) could so easily have been a triple CD with no drop in quality. Dedicated fans can at least get all the classics by buying different compilations, though that means a lot of duplication. If you are such a fan, you may be better to start with the box, then add Greatest hits 2 and one of the RCA compilations, then see what else you want.
If you only want one CD of Tom's music, this is the one to buy despite the absence of two classics. If you enjoy it as much as I do, you can always buy more of his music another time.
Repackaged version of Hall's Ultimate Collection from 2001.......2006-07-29
Literate and folkie, Hall's early Mercury recordings were often inspired by real life events. Produced by Jerry Kennedy, the earliest hits - "Ballad of Forty Dollars," "A Week in a County Jail," and "Salute to a Switchblade Knife" - sound similar to his work with Roger Miller. These sardonic sides, along with such classics as "Homecoming," "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died," and "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine," still conjure wry poignancy.
Hall embraced country radio by mixing barfly sing-a-longs "That Song is Driving Me Crazy" and "I Like Beer" with kid-friendly ditties ala "I Love" and "I Care." Yet, he also boldly experimented with his basic sound. Examples? "Ravishing Ruby" employed Mexican xylophone long before Jimmy Buffet did, and "Fox on the Run"was a rare commercial blow for bluegrass.
At his commercial peak, Hall left Mercury for RCA, where the enclosed hits "What Have You Got to Lose" and "The Old Side of Town" demonstrate an artist whose work had become merely product. A return to Mercury yielded a popular remake of Rudy Vallee's "P.S. I Love You" (the final track found here) before his star completely faded.
Although it omits interesting lesser hits, this crisp sounding collection is a strong retrospective of a great singer-songwriter. It is a repackaged version of Hall's Ultimate Collection that was put out in 2001.

Trisha Yearwood ended up in the middle of one of 1997's music-industry storms when her version of the big ballad "How Do I Live" aced out teenage sensation LeAnn Rimes' on the soundtrack of Con Air, an action flick everyone immediately forgot about. Also somewhat lost in the commotion was Yearwood's own honorable half-decade-plus of hits, so many that some of her best (like a masterful version of Melissa Etheridge's "You Can Sleep While I Drive") didn't make it to this roundup of singles. That's OK; there'll be another. And for now, Songbook honorably recapitulates the career so far of one of current country's most-reliables. --BylineCustomer Reviews:
