Customer Reviews:
Timelessly Nasty.......2003-10-18
One professional reviewer used the phrase "timelessly nasty" to describe Tony Joe White's "Snakey." That is about the most appropriate way I can think of to describe this excellent set. The opening title track "Feeling Snakey" is some of the greasiest low-down swamp music you'll hear as Tony Joe blasts, "If I ever make it back to Louisiana, if I ever get my body uncoiled, gonna take my woman back to the shack in the swamps, smell them crawdads boil." On this track it's abundantly clear that Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits owes a major debt of gratitude to Tony Joe White's lead guitar style. "Bayou Bleus" steams with a smoldering groove. On "Nothing I Would Not Do" Tony Joe waxes romantic, "When the night is falling, look up at the sky, pick you out the brightest one and remember that I will be looking at the same one trying to hang on until I make it back to you." On "Dark Horse Coming" Tony Joe's guitar burns like coal as he refuses to be ready for death, "I went up on the mountain, heard the panther scream, I know it's a sign, but I don't know what it means." "The Organic Shuffle" is a swamper's novelty song with a tale from the health food store. "Living Off the Land" has some blazing lead guitar. "Rico (14) Field Worker" is an aching ballad, "I never told you about my dreams." Once again, Tony Joe White has put together an excellent set that pushes & pulls, kicks & screams, wails & moans. Like a fine wine, this swamp fox is aging well. Enjoy!
Tony Joe White keeps on going.......2003-05-07
I'm a fan of Tony for allready 15 years now, he still sounds great. This cd did grow on me, first I thought "well, it's ok" but after 3 times I'm thinking "what was I doing the first time I heard the cd?". It rocks, it's swampy, it's bluesy and its "real music" no computerised instruments, it's like it's supposed to be. Great music (btw my favourite is Living off the land)
Tony, you did it again!
More Great Swamp Music.......2003-04-14
Tony Joe has done it again! If you like your music swampy, you'll love this CD. My favorites are "Living Off the Land," "Dark Horse Coming" and "Taste Like Chicken."
Another album from the Swamp Fox.......2003-01-02
Rebellious Tony Joe sang on Beginning, "I didn't come here for just one song". He's stayed true to his word these last 30 odd years.
There's a few familiar riffs on Snakey and he sounds a little older but it doesn't take anything away from this album.
The music ranges from his classic bluesy swamp pop guitar and harmonica to an almost classical sounding spanish guitar number.
His style of straight forward story telling and uncluttered lyrics filled with quirky humour hasn't changed. There's nothing new on this album but it doesn't sound stale or dated. Who said more of the same is a bad thing? It's all good!
I don't think Tony Joe will win any new fans with this album but speaking as an existing fan, I loved it.
Consistent.......2002-12-08
This CD is more of the same. Tony Joe White will always provide a strong consistent performance. I've played the disc about a dozen times and it really is your down to earth, lets keep it simple and achieve a great end result disc!! The guy keeps it on track with low down Swamp Rock. If you love his sound, if you love his voice then you'll love this disc.
