Nashville hacks singing for faux-patriotism.......2005-12-23
What do these artists have in common? Cutting edge musical geniuses? Gifted songwriters able to speak to a wide range of audiences? Innovators in their genre?
Err, no.
Actually what they all have in common is that they all appear on this package, created to commercially exploit the war on terrorism, one which contains songs like Where The Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly, This Ain't No Rag, It's A Flag, and Back Where I Come From. In other words, maudlin, xenophobic, cliche filled, black/white dichotomous sentiments, and the lack of any attempt at rational or questioning political analysis, all set to fiddles and pedal steel guitars, and to be marketed and sold at Wal-Mart. I should add that I am not against patriotism, when it is intelligent and well informed; this, however, is dumb, reactionary faux-patriotism. Nothing is more so than the song God Bless the USA. As an American who loves his country, I can say that this song, with its syrupy sound and its naive lyrics, does not speak for me.
I listened to a bit of this schlock on a plane ride a while back just to see how much of it I could take. The answer was - not very much. What little I could take made me want to drink, and heavily.
Some of these performers, specifically Brooks and Dunn, Randy Travis, Charlie Daniels, and perhaps Kenny Chesney and even (I hate to admit) Toby Keith are actually fairly talented; others, like former lounge singer Lee Greenwood, Alabama, Montgomery Gentry, etc, are 3rd rate musical hacks.
Ultimately, listening to this nonsense, I'm reminded that some of the greats of the genre, like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, George Jones, and Willie Nelson were neither knee-jerk
reactionaries nor apologists for a ruling political party. Then again, Dusty Drake, Montgomery Gentry, and Blackhawk are no Johnny Cashes. Just Nashville hacks, soon to be forgotten.
Great CD.......2005-08-21
NOTE: Most of the bad reviews below have to more with politics than music. These folks probably have never listened to all the songs let alone actually buying the CD.
To to a kids review.......2005-07-31
I'll tell you I'm a kid (age 16) and some don't want to use their real name because this is the internet, not real life. If you knew my name or the original reviewer's real name, would that make any difference? Anywa, you say since a reviewer doesn't use their real name, they are a terrorist? Very intelligent.
"If your home is destroyed by someone, you are not going to look for the people or person involved. No you are going to the proper authorities and they will handle it.
That is what happened here. We were attacked and the proper authorities are handling the situation."
We were not attacked by Iraq and the proper authorities are not handling the situation. We attacked Afghanistan, but Iraq has nothing to do with this.
"Look I am all for freedom for imagrant's but they took it to far with the attacks. Living in our country, working here, becoming friendly with the neighborhoods and gaining the trust of everyone around just to destroy part of the country you love (so you say) is just something that cannot be tolerated. At least we had the guts to tell them we were coming. You should be thankful that you have a country who is willing to protect you and your family. "
So you think it's immigrants fault that we were attacked? And you call yourself an American? You should be blind to race and country of origin, we are all Americans here. The country of Afghanistan attacked us and we went after them, that has nothing to do with immigrants.
"Right after 9/11 happened EVERYONE was togther as a whole to make sure the people behind this act of cowardly violence (kind of like the way you wrote your rewiew) and any kind of terroristic threats on U.S.A. would never happen again. But I guess for some of you people that was just like hopping on the band wagon for a short period of time."
It was not cowardly violence. In a war you strive to kill the most enemies you can. I would only Hope the US would strive to kill or detain as many terrorists as they can just as their target was civilians. Whatever you say, suicide bombings are not cowardly, they are actually pretty effective. Find me a US citizen willing to fly a plane into a building full of terrorists to kill our enemies.
"It's not a matter of what song's are good to listen to and what songs aren't. It's about a bunch of people who support the country (they love) so they can feel safe to go shopping, go to work or just go for a walk and not have to worry about some idiot flying a couple of planes into some building's or into the ground and never see their loved ones or the light of day ever again."
Ah, back to the actual review of the CD, which you have made a minor detail. I don't care about what these singers support, I care about their music. I care about what politicians support, and how singers sing. I happen to like many of the songs on the CD, but I didn't buy it because I own many of the songs already.
"How can you say you love something if you are going to let it get hurt and not try to justify the situation. I feel sorry for the people in your life."
Well more people are in car crashes every year than were in the WTC during 9/11, so you should be pushing for safety in cars. How can you say you love something if you are going to let it get hurt and not try to justify the situation? Of course you are a very effective tool of the terrorists, the typical American scared out of his pants when a building goes down, scared to shop, when you are in more danger driving your car. We have killed over 10 times the ammount of CIVILIANS in Iraq (nothing to do with 9/11) than the 9/11 attacks killed. Of course I'm sure they aren't people to you.
But back to the CD, I am really thinking about buying it mainly just for "Hey Mr. President" and I'm dissapointed they didn't put it on another CD, I love the song and the Warren Brothers.
Most of the songs are really great, although "God Bless The USA" was overplayed and I used to love it, but now I'm just tired of it. All of these songs are great, although some don't even seem to be patriotic. But that doesn't matter to me, because great music is great music, which is worth buying.

Inspirational power ballads with soaring harmonies dominate the ninth album by this veteran Texas quartet. Whether singing of the everyday, character-building challenges faced by ordinary folks in the title track, celebrating the comforts of domestic bliss in "Nothing to Prove," or thanking a higher power in "Hey God," much of the material has a thematic uplift that matches the music. Two of the songs, "Long Lost Smile" and "What She Had to Do," tell the story of a heroic woman who runs away from an abusive or neglectful relationship. Yet the band shows a sexier side with the double entendre of "Cowboy Girl," the sensual "One of Those Nights," and the steamy "Careful Where You Kiss Me." While songs name-check rock idols like Van Morrison and Bob Seger, the closing "Always in the Band" makes Lonestar sound more like the Journey of contemporary country. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Lonestar's Predictable But Likeable "Mountain".......2006-10-22
With the surging successes of Rascal Flatts, Carolina Rain and Heartland, these four lads may no longer be the lone star of tight harmonies over adorning radio-wooing grooves. Hence, the stakes are higher as evidenced by Lonestar's less than successful predecessor disc "Coming Home." As a result, this multi-Grammy nominee has one of two options: either to give themselves a sonic makeover or to continue to charter the same course that had brought them success thus far. For album number 9, "Mountains," they have chosen the latter. Rifled with their trademark power ballads performed with a bombastic flair and thumbing country pop rockers with the occasional fiddling, "Mountains" is what fans have come to expect and love. However, as virtuous as consistency is, there's a predictability to these tracks that can come across as dull and even trite. Further, their often over-the-top polished production with jarring guitars and ear-numbing drums, courtesy of helmsman Mark Bright, pilfers from the boys' performance a tepid earnestness.
This does not mean that there are songs that deserve widespread circulation. Most ardent and performed with a transparent agony comes at the encore of the disc: "Always in the Band." Never have the boys sounded more genuine when they sing about the sacrifices they have had to make as itinerant entertainers. Also, fetching is the piano-based ballad "Hey God"--a stark theological treatise of trying to make sense of suffering in the light of God's sovereignty--these guys really know how to articulate such a profound issue within the short confines of this song in a winsome way. Similarly uplifting is the vanguard single "Mountains," an inspirational ballad about overcoming life's obstacles, performed with those patented high notes a la their hit "Amazed." Much less optimistic is "What She Had To" which deals with the struggles of an abused mother absconding with her children, a slice of life so acerbically captured in song.
However, the rest of the album in no way comes close to the abovementioned cuts. Despite the mention of cowboys, boots, rodeo, and everything western, "Cowboy Girl" is a loud 70s rocker that suffers far too much from its ear-destroying drums. Cut first by Andy Griggs, the guitar-imbued "Careful Where You Kiss Me" is only as interesting as the title suggests. Also, known for their share of empowering women type of songs, "Long Lost Smile," though noteworthy for its sentiments, is performed with an artifical sheen as if these boys are more out to please their legions of female fans than performing something that means something to them. Further, the presence of round the clock Nashville current hot shot writters such as Brett James, Bill Luther, Jason Sellers, and Tom Shapiro usually show promise. But, somehow Lonestar has been serviced with many of their leftovers or paeans written to fill up their punch cards. Perhaps, a track or two from the more seasoned writers such as Paul Overstreet, Pat Alger, Victoria Shaw or Angela Kaset might have salvaged a little some of this mess.
While their previous album "Coming Home" was a return to a more organic earthy sound, "Mountains" brings them up the slope to a heavy produced slick package. Though not all is doom, these boys still do know how to croon a power ballad to great effect, they are often let down when the tempo perks. After 9 albums of this pop-country road, if these guys want to stay on the country music scene in the long haul, perhaps a detour may be redemptive. Nevertheless, for those who are at averse to change, there's enough here to satisfy longtime fans and thus far with the title cut climbing up the charts, no mountain seems insurmountable yet.

Lonestar has sold the bulk of their 8 million albums on the strength of two things: lead singer Richie McDonald's straight-to-the-heart, emotive vocals, and crossover songs that express the Hallmark sentiments of tongue-tied Romeos and Wal-Mart dads. The premier target of these valentines is the stay-at-home mom who needs only one thing more than sleep, and that's serious romance and appreciation--something more than flowers on Mother's Day and a once-a-month restaurant dinner with the kids in tow. Let's Be Us Again, which again balances power guitar and pedal steel in the quest for radio airplay, hits that button time and again. The title song doesn't match up to the anthemic pop ballad "Amazed," but it does strike an emotional chord. McDonald and company strive mightily to put the intimacy back into long-term relationships with "That Gets Me," "What I Miss the Most," and "Summertime." Where the album disappoints is in its over-the-top paeans to family, first in the insufferable "Let Them Be Little," then in the nice but unconvincing "Women Rule the World," and finally in the trite "Mr. Mom." It's times like these that Lonestar seems most guilty of pandering, if not treacle. Buyer beware: sugar buzz ahead. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

Mr. Mom.......2006-01-31
I just wanted to say that "Mr. Mom" is one of the best and most true-to-life songs I've ever heard. Whoever that person was who thought that the words were "hilariously idiotic" obviously does not have children and never had siblings.
"Football, soccer and ballet
Squeeze in Scouts and PTA"
(this is what my mom goes through every day)
"And there's that shopping list she left
That's seven pages long"
(my mom spends $300 at Wal-Mart some days)
etc.
"Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the 18th time..."
etc.
It's all so true!!
Love These Guys.......2005-11-12
Thank You Lonestar For Making The Most Annoying Song Ever!.......2005-03-06
Let's take a look at a few of the hillariously idiotic lyrics from this song:
"Football, soccer and ballet
Squeeze in Scouts and PTA
And there's that shopping list she left
That's seven pages long
How much smoke can one stove make
The kids won't eat my charcoal cake
It's more than any maid can take
Being Mr. Mom
Well
Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the fifteenth time
Breakfast, six naps at nine
There's bubble gum in the baby's hair
Sweet potatoes(they pronounce it PER-TAT-ERS) in my lazy chair
Been crazy all day long and it's only Monday
Mr. Mom"
I should seriously consider becoming a country artist. I can make my voice sound like a male country singer and I can write meaningless whitetrash songs, so all I have to do now is find someone to play steel guitar for me, and i'm gonna make it big as a star in Nashville and all over redneck USA. If you want to hear good country, stay with classics like Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty. Please pass on girly garbage and mindless hick mumbling.
Lonestar Needs to be "Us" Again.......2004-10-02
Back in the late 90s, Lonestar enjoyed a career makeover. Divorcing itself from its Texan honky tonk spit and sawdust roots, they have indulged in anthemic balladry and Eagles-influenced country rockers. Gone are the pressed starched shirts, Stetson hats and cowboy boots, the Lonestar of today (as pictured on the album sleeve) wears designer jeans and leather jackets, looking more like an over grown boy band. Such a move certainly paid off handsomely as Lonestar has anchored itself firmly as country radio's darling.
"Let's Be Us Again" continues Lonestar's winning streak with the standard over-the-top power ballads and popish rockers. I have no qualms with artists trying to placate the support of radio; after all without airplay, it's commercial suicide for any artist. But has Lonestar gone too far? So far that "Let's Be Us Again" becomes a marketing ploy rather than an artistic expression of the group's ingenuity.
How sincere are these guys on the loquacious "Mr. Mom" and the guitar driven rocker "Women Rule the World"? Are lines such as "They're so sexy when they're mamas," "In all shapes and sizes they make my temperature rise" really from the heart? Or are they pretentiously written so as to tickle the fancy of country music's largely female audience? Trace Adkins has done it with the extremely degrading and insulting "Hot Mama," is Lonestar following suit?
The rest of the album doesn't get better. Most of the songs deal with themes that are far too safe within country music's canon. The titles say it all: "County Fair," "T.G.I.F.," "Summertime," and "Class Reunion." Following in the shadow of their mega smash hit "Amazed," most of the ballads here are powerhouse performance with Richie McDonald trying to prove that he could reach and sustain the high notes, rather than trying to express the emotions of the songs. With that said, the romantic title cut "Let's Be Us Again," the melancholic "What I Miss the Most" and the inspirational "From There to Here" are still ingratiating.
Like many male bands and artists, Lonestar's eagerness for success has made "Let's Be Us Again" pretty pretentious. Maybe Lonestar should take their own advice and "let's be us again." They need to re-discover their own identity and chose songs that express that identity, rather than fashion itself into an over grown boy band singing mawkish material.

In the Mark McGuinn-penned "Unusually Unusual," lead singer Richie McDonald swoons over a girl who's "absolutely unpredictable." If only the same could be said of I'm Already There, which fulfills every expectation one could have of a Lonestar album. As usual, the band's ordinariness is delivered at a highly competent level, and the recordings here are all catchy all the time. The band rocks out in an agreeably familiar way, making equal use of country, pop, and AOR conventions, and McDonald can hit any note he wants if he's given a running start--as on the romanticized rationalizations of a power ballad called "I'm Already There," this album's bid for a hit of "Amazed" proportions. The disc's most surprising moment, "Without You," is also its most disappointing. After a mumbled, emotionally complex verse ("Hurt, cry, pray to die / That's all I've got left to do"), McDonald and his mates suddenly launch into an inexplicably bombastic chorus that sounds like its never even been introduced to its own depressive heart. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

Lonestar, a self-contained country band in the tradition of Alabama and Little Texas, enlisted Los Angeles transplant Dann Huff to produce Lonely Grill, their third effort. Huff has helped them craft a record that fits the modern country format without descending into terminal slickness. Though some of the material is formulaic--"Amazed" (power ballad), "What About Now" (country Springsteen)--it is quality formula and the boys sing it like they mean it. Huff manages to put some new twists on the country-rock arrangements while keeping them more country than rock. Lonestar wanted this CD to reflect the energy of their live shows, and though some of the material might work better live (the hip-hop meets Hee Haw "Saturday Night"), the CD benefits from the relatively stripped-down sound. Richie McDonald has a voice on a par with many of Nashville's solo artists. When handed cleverly rhymed material like "Don't Let's Talk About Lisa" (which allows talkin' about "Hanson or Marilyn Manson," but not about "she whose name must not be spoken"), he proves up to the occasion. To paraphrase Merle, Lonely Grill "ain't art but it ain't bad." --Michael RossCustomer Reviews:
This IS the best Lonestar CD.......2007-06-11
That being said...this is a great CD. It has fast songs like "Don't lets talk about Lisa" which is pretty good. But I prefer the slow songs.
"Amazed" was obviously a huge hit, and rightfully so.
"Tell her" and "I gotta find you" are great songs that make me wonder why they stopped making good music like this. "I gotta find you" is my personal fave on the whole CD.
Lonely Grill- the title track is a good song too, with a beautiful guitar sound.

ZZ Top's twangy, hyper-charged Texas-style blues-rock has always been superficially irresistible. The blazing guitar riffs and driving rhythms of hits like "Legs" and "Tush" have made them anthems in topless bars the world over. Yet on this 15-cut tribute, country artists like Lonestar, Dwight Yoakam, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., and his son, Hank III, not only manage to match the blistering, guitar-driven abandon of ZZ's original hit versions, but also imbue them with a measure of bluesy soulfulness. Some listeners will probably be surprised to discover that these familiar songs do actually have lyrics, since the ZZ boys tend to bury them under a ton of metal. While some of these covers are less than memorable, quite a few are outstanding. Along with the aforementioned artists, Brooks & Dunn (on "Rough Boy"), Alan Jackson ("Sure Got Cold After the Rain Fell"), and Andy Griggs ("I Need You Tonight") also evoke a tough tenderness that's often obscured when the Topsters slip their sleek hit-making formula into hard-rockin' overdrive. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:

Pretty cool!.......2003-11-21
I wonder if any of these artists were really fans?.......2003-03-22
My biggest problem with this cd is that hardly any of the songs have soul. It sounds generic. I think the main problem is that most country singers today use studio musicians, and they play what they are told. So if you tell them to play a country version of a rock song, that's what they do. But they don't make it personal, and that is what is missing.
What are some of the pluses on the album? Well, I have to say that the Warren Brothers did a good job on "Cheap Sunglasses", and I really enjoyed Hank III's version of "Fearless Boogie". "Just Got Paid" by Montgomery Gentry just ROCKS. I was glad of that, because "Just Got Paid" has one of the best guitar riffs ever. Period.
For the most part, this tribute album lacks soul, and in spots the singing is laughable. If you're looking for an album like the Eagles' tribute "Common Thread", you're not gonna find it here. Too bad Travis Tritt coundn't have added a song to this album.
Ignore All The Other Reviews.......2002-06-23
Buy it because you like Dwight Yoakam, Phil Vassar, Bocephus, but not because you want to hear ZZ-TOP. ZZ-TOP already has their OWN albums out. ;) Leave bluesy, humbucking, grungy goodness to the TOPs. That's what they do best. Country needs to be played by Country.
