Her mother was 16 when she had her, and her father moved on when she was two. By the age of 15, with a double-barrel shotgun always at the ready, she was managing a kicker bar in rural Illinois where the corn fields meet the pig farms. That gave Gretchen Wilson something to sing about, with attitude in spades. "You might think I'm trashy, a little too hardcore," she admits on the smash single "Redneck Woman," "but in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door." Wilson, already the toast of Nashville before this full-length debut hit the shelves, isn't just putting the trailer park back into country music--she's the antidote to Shania and Faith. Nothing here sounds manufactured or studied, and the best songs are those she wrote. If most of those spotlight the fightin' side that has made "Redneck Woman" an anthem with blue-collar babes, she lets her vulnerability show on her choice of covers, particularly Leslie Satcher's gospel-rap of "Chariot" and the marital weeper "The Bed." Whatever you think of Wilson, who packs a hint of Sammi Smith and Allison Moorer--and even Janis Joplin--into her double-fisted delivery, you won't forget her. Move over, Loretta. Make way, Tanya. Here's another good ol' honky-tonk girl. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for a Bartender.......2007-07-10

Even though this is her first it is well worth it she sings well and has old traditional country music not like ms.twain who went for the pop country Gretchen keeps her music downhome and I like it and you need to listen to the whole thing to see her influences not just the title cuts there is more to be heard from her and I'll buy that

5 out of 5 stars Great CD .......2007-05-30

I love this Gretchen Wilson CD. Actually the whole family loves it.It's a great get !!

1 out of 5 stars gritty tomboy garbage.......2007-05-13

Horrible music, even makes country look bad and thats bad!!! Like nails on a chalkboard

5 out of 5 stars For the herd of us Redneck Women.......2007-03-11

I don't listen to country very often, but Gretchen Wilson speaks to the country girl in me, and I love it. It takes me back to my childhood, and all of the wonderful people that I grew up with in the Midwest that cultured folk would call rednecks. I've got to say that Victoria's Secret buying high class broads are dull. The whole CD takes me back and her voice is beautiful too.

3 out of 5 stars Here for the Party.......2007-02-04

Gretchen Wilson burst onto the scene with her hit "Redneck Woman" and hasn't stopped yet. If her debut CD "Here for the Party" is any indication, Gretchen is here to have us all party for a long time to come.

As you read her bio after listening to her album, you can see where "Redneck Woman" came from, straight from her life and heart. It's gets your toes to tapping and you can't help but sing along when she wants all the other Redneck women to say Hell Yeah! (You should see the looks I get listening to this song in my truck and start singing along.)

"Here for the Party", the title track and the second single released from Gretchen's debut album is another toe tapper that will have you singing along. It's just a good old, have fun kind of song.

One of my favorite songs on the CD is "Pocahontas Proud." It's about living her dreams and making her hometown proud of her. Not to mention showing the people on music row that said she didn't have it that they were wrong.

There are a few ballads on the CD that show her vocals off and give you an idea that Gretchen is here to stay and make her mark on country music whether they like it or not.

Amazon.com essential recording

In addition to subverting the conventions of greatest-hits discs--only 5 of these 17 tracks appear in the hit versions from Carpenter's studio albums--Party Doll does a better job of balancing the singer/songwriter's moods than any of her releases since 1992's Come On Come On. Here, upbeat celebrations such as "Down at the Twist and Shout" (included in a live Super Bowl take) and "I Feel Lucky" comfortably rub shoulders with the quietly sweet ("Dreamland," originally on an early-'90s various-artists set of lullabies) and brooding ("Stones in the Road") sides of Carpenter's work. Finally, her rendition of Mick Jagger's title tune hints that she has vital work yet to do. --Rickey Wright

I was very pleased with the service I received and the music is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-03-13

Good quality and many of the songs I have heared on the radio.

4 out of 5 stars "for sentimental reasons".......2005-09-07

"This Shirt" - the mere lyrical content to this song can bring tears to my eyes - that's how good it is!

10,000 miles - quite simply "beautiful" - the ultimate song.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous songs, great artist and singer. A great listen........2004-10-21

The songs on this album range from down-home country (Shut Up and Kiss Me, I Feel Lucky) to introspective folky (Stones in the Road)to just plain good-time toe-tapping fun (Down at the Twist and Shout). My personal favorite is the lush and gorgeous 10,000 miles, a long, generous and heartfelt wave of emotion set to music. It is truly a masterwork, the kind of recording that only a very few of the most gifted artists could ever construct. This song alone puts Mary Chapin Carpenter into the elite league of All-Time Greats, be it folk or country. But there's much more! Ms Carpenter is not content to be a fabulous singer and songwriter; she's obviously compelled by a powerful innerspring of talent and humanity to new horizons of discovery for her -- and, because she is so perceptive and talented -- for us. This ain't cookie-cutter music, folks. This is the REAL thing. For anyone who's tired of playlists and me-too musicians, Mary Chapin Carpenter is a gust of the highly-charged clear breeze that follows a thunderstorm and lights up your lungs, eyes and heart -- and has echoes of the storm that preceded it. Are there gripes about this music? Only if you don't like emotion, feeling and involvement. This is class A-plus music top to bottom, from an A-class artist. Party Doll was my first CD from this brilliant musician, but I'm rapidly buying the rest of her collection, and haven't been disappointed yet. I doubt that you'll be either. Love you, Mary.

5 out of 5 stars A good value, and a great place to start.......2004-03-20

I was only casually aquainted with Mary Chapin Carpenter's music before picking up this album. The hits I knew were all here, and so was a lot more material I have come to love as well. I was a bit leery that "Down at the Twist and Shout" was a live version from the Super Bowl; this song was the primary reason I wanted a MCC album, and I was concerned a live version recorded in a stadium during the Super Bowl might be of inferior recording quality. But I needn't have worried, the sound is great, and the performance is energetic and fun, with a verse in Creole thrown in for good measure. "This Shirt" is probably my favorite track I was unfamiliar with, but the entire album is quality; there are very few 17-track albums by any artist where I can say I enjoyed every song. I now look forward to exploring her original albums. I highly recommend this album to anyone looking for an introduction to this great artist.

All that's right with modern country and all that's wrong with modern country in one cellophane wrapper. You can't deny the current roster of talented, enthusiastic, and charismatic performers. On the other hand, the omnipresent rock beats and slick production seem to indicate a lack of trust in the talent. As a result, artists with a less-polished approach--BR5-49, Patty Loveless, Lee Roy Parnell--stand apart from the pack. Choosing material in modern Nashville is also a crapshoot, as evidenced by lines such as: "Going through the Big D, I don't mean Dallas / I can't believe what the judge had to tell us / I got the jeep and she got the palace." Or "Joined a cult, joined the Klan, on the road with Pearl Jam / buried with the Grateful Dead, came back as a Parrothead." Of course, this is a danceable party album, so maybe we should take Trace Adkins's advice: "This ain't no thinkin' thing." --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars A Good Sample........2005-09-03

Not having a background in Country music, I was looking for something that would sample recent trends in the genre for a party I was having. I must say the playlist is a lot of fun and many of the tracks are clever and witty, both musically and lyrically. We all had a good time.

I am a Country fan so enjoyed this CD very much it flows into each track well. Good listening for dancing or driving in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin Country CD.......2002-12-01

I'm not a big country music fan, but one of my kids got this as a gift and after listening once we were hooked. This is an awesome collection of getcha goin feel good country tunes. Our 1st one started skipping from so much use, we've been looking all over for a replacement. I'll buy 2 just in case!

4 out of 5 stars A great boot-scootin country mix!.......2000-11-27

I love collecting compilation CDs, but I don't buy very many because most fail to meet my expectations. I bought this one for several reasons. One: it contains 18 songs, which is a lot more than most compilations. No skimping on songs here! :) Two: it contains a majority of songs that are fast and truly get you into the toe-tapping, boot-scooting mood. I happen to be a line dancer so I especially like these selections. And finally, I like this CD because it has a good variety of songs from groups as well as solo artists, men as well as women.

My only critique is that some of the transitions between songs were very choppily done, such as one song starting right on the heels of another without a break. The transition between tracks 14 and 15 is the best (worst?) example: they completely cut off the end of Trace Adkins' "This Ain't No Thinkin Thing." But overall, I would definitely recommend this CD to any fans of "hot country" music. You will get lots of enjoyment from it.

5 out of 5 stars Listen All Day Long.......2000-11-04

As an owner of the original Ultimate Country Party CD, I was skeptical when I saw the play list, as to whether this one could live up to the standard set by its predecessor. However, one listen through reveals that YES! it is a great listen. What I love about both albums in particular is that they are mixed so well. This album goes from fast to slower songs with out missing a beat. It makes excellent background music at a party (no need to switch discs), perfect car trip music (for people who can't agree on just one artist), and I love to listen to it at work because the variety of artists keeps me from feeling like I am hearing the same thing over and over again. For ultimate country fans this is a great compilation.

I never bought the first one, but this one is definitely a must buy! Ever since I bought it I can't stop listening to it. There were only one or two songs I hadn't heard before, but the rest are popular country songs that will rock any party!

5 out of 5 stars Best start for newbies.......2007-01-05

I am new to Robert Earl Keen, having recently moved to Texas. We had the chance to hear him live at Flores Country Store in Helotes. What a great performer. This disk gives you a great sample of his sing-along work and is a great way to get started. My personal faves are Copenhagen and the Front Porch Song!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Collection From Three REK Albums.......2006-08-13

Good CD if you are a casual REK fan. The selections are from three albums - "The Live Album", "West Textures" and "Gringo Honeymoon". If you are only going to buy one REK CD, I guess this would have to be it. But, if you are bitten by the bug like me, you will end up owning ALL of his music!

1 out of 5 stars not the ones i'd pick........2005-11-20

But the real reason for the low rating is that if you listen to any of Robert Keen's discs through and full, you'll see that there is a theme to each release. He's chosen the order and selections for a reason which gives meaning and underscores the emotion of the songs. This includes the 'novelty' type hits. If you care about the artist's intent in this way, then just buy one of the three complete discs this semi-greatest hits release culls. When Robert plays a live show, he varies the set list each night and picks the songs after the tour bus unloads and he walks around and gets a feel for the place. To a far greater degree, he does the same with his cd's. Why not hear them in the order he intended?

5 out of 5 stars Dreadful Selfish Crime, not to own this CD.......2005-10-28

When I look for a CD of a favorite artist, I first try to find one that will have most of the songs that I enjoy the best. Then I look for the number of tracks it has, you know, I have to get my monies worth. I also check whether it has live or non-live recordings. When I found Robert Earl Keen's, "The Road Goes on Forever", I discovered that its content had all of those features and was pleasantly surprised to find much more. With songs like, `The Front Porch Song', Merry Christmas from the Family' and `Gringo Honeymoon', you get to know how well of a storyteller Robert E. Keen is while enjoying the music. The songs on this CD are meaningful, words we can relate to, they're funny and fun to sing with. I think Robert's talent is big & I think his voice fits perfect with the cool song's that he sings...I said cool songs, this isn't opera. I think his style has style. I'm thankful for KPIG radio, for introducing his music to me and stores like Amazon.com for making CD's like this available for me to buy. I highly recommend this CD of Robert E. Keen's. Listen; let it take you away, sing with it, laugh & may the party never end.

Despite its title, the first nationally released album by this Texas maverick establishes Robison as considerably more than a good-time Charlie. From the sardonic bite of "Sunset Boulevard" and "You're Not the Best" to the alcohol-fueled, nursery-rhyme whimsy of "Barlight," Robison provides a compelling blend of roadhouse swagger, whiplash humor, and an ornery streak that stretches from Austin to San Antonio. Label-mate brother Bruce Robison and Bruce's wife Kelly Willis provide vocal support, and the smoky balladry of the album-closing "Molly's Blues" would do John Prine or Steve Earle proud. Amid a musical landscape littered with alt-country wannabes and tinhorn rebels, Charlie Robison is the real deal, an artist who sticks to his guns. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another great songwriter from Texas.......2007-05-20

Distinctive voice, good band, great writer with a wide selection of topics.

5 out of 5 stars Totally underrated.......2006-03-19

Charlie Robison is an AMAZING song writer and he's been around a while and gets little recognition! He's married to one of the Dixie Chicks, but what people don't realize is that he was writing songs for her and other popular artists long before!

2 out of 5 stars Everybody needs a little Charlie Robison.......2003-06-16

Everybody needs a little Charlie Robison -- to make you laugh and cry and spill beer on yourself for one reason or another.

He gets better with age. If you're only going to buy one Robison CD, hold out for "Live" (four stars) or "Live Unchained" (five stars).

This one is an early work and of interest to Robisonophiles, but the rest of us can hear the same songs played better on his more mature albums.

4 out of 5 stars Rough Hewn Alt-Country Classic.......2002-03-16

What you see is what you get with this Bandera, Texas native. A straight-shooting, hard-working, singing/songwriting country boy with wisdom beyond his years and a Dylanesque edge to his whiskey-soaked voice. His writing soars at times: "Loving County," "Sunset Boulevard," and "Indianola" are stellar first person tales of unrequited love and war. "My Hometown" is the gem, a hilarious tale of a young man's ambition and having to come to terms with his own reality of buried dreams. Robison uses uncontrived blue collar commonality with the ease of someone who's convinced it's time to enjoy the fruits of his labors, and it's hard to argue with good old-fashioned hard work.

5 out of 5 stars Better and better each time you listen to it.......2002-01-31

I had this CD for about two weeks, and each time I have listened to it, I find more and more to love. There is really not a weak song on this CD. From the uptempo movers ( like "Poor Man's Son" and "Barlight") to the hillarious ("You're Not the Best") to the story songs (from the gritty "Waiting for the Mail" to the more light-hearted "My Hometown" to the love-and-crime ballad "Loving County"), Charlie can do it all. This is one CD that will not disappoint any fan of good and true country music.

Album Description

Spirited new sounds from across the sea to the shores of the New Land. From the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic Hesperus Early Music Ensemble's music reflects a time of new ideas, freedom and vitality. In town and village, parlor and ballroom, from the Appalachians to the great concert halls hear the musical pulse of early American music performed on a wide variety of folk and early music instruments. Includes: lively country-dance tunes, evocative Shape Note Hymns, old time Appalachian fiddle tunes, graceful European parlor music, French cotillions, divisions and improvisations. Introduction -The English Colonies in America were a patchwork-not just of territories whose boundaries became state lines, but of people from different places and classes with widely different values and experiences. This recording presents music from that patchwork; from England, the Colonial homeland; Scotland and Ireland, the homes of the largest groups of immigrants outside England; and France, the ally of the Patriots, and music written in the United States. More recordings by HESPERUS from Maggie's Music are Celtic Roots featuring Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout and Early American Roots. Hesperus Ensemble is THE sought after musical group for period music that is both authentic, and most important fun, lively and spirited. They are frequent performers at the Smithsonian's Institute of American Music and can be heard on the soundtrack or the Paramount film with Johnny Depp entitled Sleepy Hollow! Excerpts from liner notes:2.A Set of English Country Dance Tunes: Maiden Lane, Jack O'Lent, Chestnut, Bonny Broom - The visionary London music publisher John Playford first published his English Dancing Master in 1651. It was reprinted 18 times over the next 77 years and is still popular today. 3. Parting Friends/Primrose - These tunes have come down to us in choral arrangements called shape-note hymns .

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-05-20

This cd travels everywhere with me and you can easily imagine a ball at Monticello given by Mr. Jefferson when you hear it.
Try not to daydream too much while driving as i had done several times..lol..it's hard not to with this cd..:)
Perfect for a colonial reenactment or party.

5 out of 5 stars A relaxing journey into our Colonial past.......2006-03-16

I bought this CD to provide me with another dimension to my studies of period events. It truly contains a wealth of music, and takes it place as an important addition to my musical library. Living in the Mt Vernon area, I often travel with the CD playing while visiting historical places, and it provides a wonderful companion to "set the mood" for the myriad locations in the area. The quality of the sound is remarkable, the musicians superb, and the breadth of song selection provides a musical landscape for the period. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-03-04

I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.

It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.

Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.

Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!

5 out of 5 stars Cold Mountain type music that's great.......2003-11-15

Novels and movies like Cold Mountain, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and Song Catchers are showing the growing interest in traditional music and this recording hits the mark. It is music from the days of early America--the time when the first colonists come to America. You can hear the fiddle playing tunes still popular in the Appalachian mountains today and also hear shape note music arranged by Hesperus as wonderful instrumentals. The music takes you to a time when folks were making music in their homes-before TV, before the internet! This recording is good for teachers or educational purposes too- with informative liner notes. All the music is played on folk and early music instruments and it's lively and an enjoyable listen.

5 out of 5 stars The Maturing Wisacre.......2007-06-20

I have followed, and largely admired, Nick Lowe's output since "Pure Pop for Now People". Lowe has always struck me as someone willing to go out farther on a limb than others for a song. More often than not, the risk paid off, and sometimes it didn't. Generally, I'd rather hear Lowe on an off day than certain others when they're firing on all cylinders, but that's merely my taste.

"Party of One" is interesting in where it comes in Lowe's career. He's well off his high-point (post-Rockpile and his high-profile solo efforts), and I think this album finds him in a slightly more reflective groove, but with his wit in full flower. There's the fun-outrageousness of "The Look I Like", "(I Want To Build A) Jumbo Ark", "Refrigerator White", and "Shting-Shtang", but there are hints at the autobiographical in "Gai-Gin Man" and "Rocky Road", as well as slice-of-life stuff in the chilling "Who Was That Man?" and the seemingly laconic "What's Shakin' On The Hill". Behind it all is a feel of "seasoning", of a grown-up wise-guy (made even more clear in subsequent albums), musically sharp as ever, but with a broader, deeper perspective, which, interestingly enough, makes me enjoy the funny bits all the more.

I regard "Party of One" as the most enjoyable and balanced of Lowe's output up to this point. A master storyteller with musical chops to burn.

4 out of 5 stars Whole Lotta Fun.......2007-05-10

Is this Nick Lowe's best work ever? No. Then again, that's akin to saying "you have a Renoir, but it's not considered to be his finest work..."

This CD is eminently listen-able, particularly on one of those roll-down-the-windows driving days.

Some of Nick's hooks are as good (i.e. "brilliant") as they have ever been, as in "You got the look I like." Plus, as has been said earlier, you have two guitar masters working on this album: Cooder and Edwards.

Nope, not his best work, and there are even a few times you'll hit the "skip" button after you've listened through it once or twice, but the fact that you keep playing those other 9 songs, or that you can't shake one from your head hours later, should tell you something.

4 out of 5 stars Nick Lowe AND Ry Cooder.......2007-02-17

One thing other reviewers have missed is that Ry Cooder's typically-awesome guitar work adorns a few of the tracks (Gaijin Man, Rocky Road, and a couple others). Some of these songs are great, and the whole thing is fun.

4 out of 5 stars A LOT OF FUN!!.......2006-03-31

I have a real soft spot for Nick Lowe's first two solo albums, Pure Pop For Now People (or Jesus of Cool in the U.K.) and Labour of Lust. A soft spot? They are two of my favorite albums EVER!! While I love Nick's more adult fare, like The Convincer, I've had a desire to hear something more of the Labour of Lust or even Nick the Knife rockabilly ilk lately, and Party of One is just the rockabilly recipe for what I needed! It's not too slick, nice and rugged, and it ROCKS and is a lot of fun and varied enough to stay exciting the whole listen! Oh, and Dave Edmunds produced it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Nick's best..........2004-12-02

...which still means it's a fair sight better than most other people's work.

If you consider "Party of One" to be the first album of Nick's "indie" period, which also includes "The Impossible Bird," "Dig My Mood," and "The Convincer," it's easily the worst of the bunch. However, if you consider it to be the last one of his major-label period ("Party of One" was originally released on Reprise and was then reissued by Upstart), it fares a little better. But it's still no "Nick the Knife."

My problem with this album is: too much rockabilly. A couple of songs would have been enough, but rockabilly makes up nearly the entire album.

The best song, "What's Shakin' on the Hill," is fortunately *not* of this genre; in fact, it's a step forward toward Nick's more mellow songs of the late 90's, much as the Beach Boys' "Let Him Run Wild" was said to be a step toward "The Little Girl I Once Knew" (which was itself said to be a step toward "Pet Sounds"). But it's apparent Nick's not quite used to this mood yet, and you can hear it in his voice, which doesn't navigate the melody nearly as well as it does today. (He sounds much more comfortable on "You Got the Look I Like," the opener, and another good song.)

So--if you're already a Nick fan, you should pick this up. If you're *not* a Nick fan, don't start here. First, pick up "Basher" for the pre-1987 Nick. As for the post-1990 Nick, there's no "best of" compilation yet, so you might as well start with 2001's "The Convincer" and work your way back. Save "Party of One" for later.

4 out of 5 stars Party Tyme Karaoke - Country Classics.......2001-01-03

This is a good cd. So far, this is one of our favorites. Most people can pick out two or three songs they want to sing, even if they're not country fans. If you are a country fan, you'll know all of the songs. They're classics. The background music and vocals are good, even for a poor singer to keep up with. the graphics are easy to follow along with.
