Bravo! Mo' Mo' Mo'.......2006-05-13

The word "Mo'" in the title got my attention. I bought the CD to compare it to the already popular "Three Tenors" (Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras). Wow! Was I surprised. I had expected an all opera, classical and possibly spiritual repetoire. But, the music varies from "Nessun Dorma" to "Love Train" was truly, truly delightful. I enjoyed the wonderful voices of Thomas Young, Roderick Dixon, and Victor Trent Cook and the variety of musical selections so much that I purchased several other copies for my family and friends. Then, several months later, I saw their performance on PBS. I immediately ordered the VHS offered by the TV station, paying way, way over the retail price. But, I had to have it. It was, and is, the most exciting musical performance that I have seen. Later, when I put the tape into the player at my son's house, my 5-year-old granddaughter Ciara stood next to the sofa to watch. I expected her to move away soon, but, she stood there, during the entire playback of the performance, and I do mean from beginning to end. I left the tape there so that son could see it later. The following day, and for most days during the next several weeks, Ciara asked to have the tape played, until she later was taught to handle it herself. The family has since replaced my VHS with the DVD so that now, when Ciara visits me, we can watch the show again (and again). "Three Mo' Tenors" was so surprisingly wonderful- with great voices, charismatic personalities, terrific orchestral arrangements, lively and precisely choreographed routines, and just an overall feeling of mutual admiration and respect among the three gentlemen. The beautiful cinematics, with frequently interspersed shots of the enthusiatic audience, contributes to the feeling that I am actually there at the concert. Every time I watch it, I see and hear something new. When I first heard the CD, I was not fascinated by the countertenor voice. After seeing Victor Trent Cook's heartwarming performance on the DVD, and hearing his comment about his mother's definition of a countertenor, I have been granted a new appreciation for his voice. Here it is, years later, and I'm still enamored, remembering Roderick Dixon's "Make Them Hear You" elicits tears, Thomas Young's "Twisted" makes me laugh, and the duet with Victor and Thomas (see, I'm now on first-name basis with them) is so beautiful. I could to on and on. In fact, it's time for another listen.

I would rate this CD more than five stars if I could! I picked up this CD not knowing anything about these guys, but, knowing that I liked some of the songs contained on it. I was absolutely blown away by this collection! These guys have it all. Voices, talent, showmanship, style, technique, etc. Everytime I listen to it, I feel like I'm sitting right there in the theatre. I am a huge fan of opera, jazz and gospel. This CD covers it all! Although my favorite tracks are La Donna e Mobile, Make Them Hear You, and Nessun Dorma, they are all so good! I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again. You have to hear them to believe them!

wonderful collection of music.......2005-08-23

A good album is one that can't be categorized neatly. Three Mo' Tenors tackles classic opera, Broadway tunes and other genres with ease. They have beautiful voices, and the music they choose to interpret is so universal that even my toddler girl loves listening to it! Their technical expertise combined with their stage presence and charisma makes for an enjoyable cd. Highly recommended - especially if you are looking to introduce yourself or your children to different musical genres.

One of my most favorite performance DVD's, but how, or why, on earth did they leave off the most stiring single number on the CD - "A Song For You," by Rodrick Dixon?

The two-disc, 46-cut Good Times does a great job of demonstrating how singer and saxophonist Louis Jordan's music evolved from the fairly straight swing of his early Decca sides to the jump blues that made him a father of rock & roll and soul. "Ain't That Just Like a Woman," for instance, features guitarist Carl Hogan giving birth to one of Chuck Berry's signature licks, while the likes of "Beware" and "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie" balance punch and elegance like the work of few bandleaders before or since. It would've been nice to see the mightily syncopated "Early in the Morning" (later covered by both Ray Charles and Harry Nilsson) taking the place of, say, "The Two Little Squirrels," but there really are few complaints to be made about this collection. --Rickey Wright

If i hear Little Richard Pop Off One More Time About How He Invented Rock & Roll( "i'm the the ayatolla of Rock & Rolla"!),i'll throw the cd and vid of "Caldonia" at him and tell him to SHUT UP!! The Imodest and Full Of Themselves always Steal and appropriate from others.Jelly Roll Morton also claimed he invented Jazz,and great though he was- he,Like Richard,was more concerned with self promotion and personal myth making.The Boastfull are never the first string artists.That takes sincerity and humility.And p.s. Jerry Lee Lewis(entertaining and raw as he is)got much of his deal from the Boogie Woogie piano playing-singing of Harry "The Hipster" Gibson-also from jordan's era.Why do these guys egos prevent them for giving credit to their progenitors.

The #1 R&B Artist Of The 1940's.......2004-06-29

This genius was the #1 selling African American artist of the 1940's. No one else sold more records or had more hits. He out sold The Mills Bros.,Nat Cole,Duke,Ella,Buddy and Ella Johnson,Satchmo, and Count Basie.He was the #1 R&B artist of the 40's with more top 10 hits and more #1's on the r&b charts than any other Black act of that period. Louis also had a total of 9 top 10 pop hits between 1944 and 1950 and he is the only r&b based artist to have 2 #1 hits on the country music charts(an astonishing feat back then). Those two songs are Jordan classics-1943's and early 44's classic "Ration Blues" and 1944's "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't Ma Baby".Both songs are included on this wonderful cd.The great Nat "King"Cole hit #1 on the Country charts in the mid 40's with his "Straighten up and fly right" but Nat was more of a pop singer than r&b singer. 'G.I.Jive" was a massive hit for him in 1944.It was #1 on both the r&b and pop charts that year. Some may think of Louis Jordan as a clown and that's a monumental tragedy-this cat was a musical genius and an incredible composer,bandleader,and saxophonist. The clown moniker could be easily applied to Charlie Chaplin,Jerry Lewis,Laurel and Hardy,and Harold Lloyd,but they were genuises as well. This cd is a must for any music lovers collection.

Great Compact Jive Package!.......2003-09-02

Starting as a member of the Count Basie band in the 1930s, Louis Jordan soon became known as sax player, vocalist, and jive man extraordinaire on his many solo recordings from the late 1930s until his death in the mid-1970s. This package focuses only on the years 1938 thru 1953, which is admittedly most of his best work, but it would be nice to hear some of his later recordings as well. In particular, two recordings of the classic "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", cut in the 50s and 70s, improve by being taken at a faster tempo. Louis practically invented jump blues, and no less a giant than BB King has paid tribute with an album of all Jordan material. (Let the Good Times Roll). Building on Cab Calloway's earlier reputation as the king of jive language and music, Jordan creates an evocative, often hilarious picture of the trials and tribulations of the black performer of his day. His takes on trains ("Texas and Pacific", "Choo Choo, Ch'Boogie," and "Salt Pork, West Virginia"), drinking ("What's the Use of Being Sober?"), waitresses ("Boogie Woogie Blue Plate"), and life itself (the wonderful "Life is So Peculiar" duet with Louis Armstrong) still delight after all these years due to his irrepresible humor and jive language. So, if your budget only allows for a two-CD set, spring for this edition by one of the most upbeat, positive, and all around funny cats ever, and run, don't walk, to the nearest Saturday night fish fry.

great stuff - what a great discovery.......2002-05-14

I first heard this in a bar in New York as my wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary. The barman had a whole load of old music that he was playing - he was a real expert
Anyway every time we heard a tune that we really liked it turned out to be a Louis Jordan number so we went home and ordered this CD

We play it all the time: its very varied, there's some really neat period pieces which initially sound a little silly but they really grow on you - I find myself singing "barnacle bill" all the time. Great fun and a lovely change from the normal fare- try it

The True King of R&b -Essential!.......2001-06-30

DAMN Chuck Berry! LATER for Little Richard (he could just SHUT UP!) LOUIE JORDAN was the TRUE King of Rock and Roll and R&B! Listen to the wild preaching in "Beans and Cornbread" and try not to roll on the floor laughing. Dig "Open the Door Richard" and I DARE you not to sing along. Try keeping your feet still through "Salt Pork West Virginia" or "Don't Worry Bout That Mule." Trying to find a bad Louis Jordan record is like finding green snow and chicken's teeth! They don't exist!

Delbert Recycled - Still Does it for me!.......2006-08-11

Let's get it straight - this and "Honky Tonk-N Blues" are not really Delbert albums as though he went into the studio to cut this record. No sir, all these songs are from his 1975 and '76 albums Love Rustler and Genuine Cowhide on ABC, mixed and matched and put out again by MCA ... not like they really did much for him otherwise. That said, it's still classic Delbert and I give it 4 stars just for that. Drawback is that is has 4 less songs than Honky Tonk-n, although it does have - surprise - Let the Good Times Roll! But if you're going for a Delbert compilation CD, go for something really good like the Delbert "Ultimate Collection" on Hip-O - they know how to do him justice!

Not his best.......2005-09-16

I love Delbert McClinton but this CD is not his best. I can't complain about his singing or the band playing behind him as they sound good. I just couldn't get into most of these songs. Except for "Before You Accuse Me" and "Solid Gold Plated Fool" I found the songs to be kind of silly and thrown together.

By far my favorite McClinton album. Stripped down to the basics, his talent shines through much more than in recent releases. Not cluttered up with a load of guest atists. Some great R&B!

Albums consisting entirely of one artist paying tribute to another are commonplace, especially in the blues world where a particular artist's musical heritage is easy to trace. It's rare, though, for an artist of B.B. King's caliber to do such a tribute, and we're all lucky that the artist he chose to honor is Louis Jordan--the King of the Blues saluting the King of Swing. King's clean, expressive guitar style and rough-hewn voice are so distinctive that there's no mistaking them for anyone else's, and hearing them applied to Jordan's classic songs--including "Ain't Nobody Here but Us Chickens," "Somebody Done Changed the Lock on My Door," "Saturday Night Fish Fry," and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out"--demonstrates both King's considerable skill and the great versatility of Jordan's songwriting. One of B.B. King's best latter-day albums, "Let the Good Times Roll" is a terrific collection of 18 songs usually associated with jump blues master Louis Jordan.
His take on classics like "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" and "Let the Good Times Roll" are less boisterous and more laid-back than Jordan's, but he sings each and every song so well, with impeccable timing and phrasing, and the stellar combo never ever sets a finger wrong.

B.B. King's take on the sexist (and funny) "Ain't That Just Like A Woman" is pure delight, a joyously swaggering, swinging rendition which I listened to three or four times in a row the first time I played the CD (in my car on my way to work). Nero didn't _really_ fiddle while Rome burned, but it's still funny!

King also does a stylish, personal interpretation of Jimmy Cox's "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out", and lays down a great "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" with a wonderful old-timey big band feel, a jazzy "Somebody Done Changed the Lock on My Door", and a super-cool finger-snapping "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?". You just can't sit still to that one.

Lesser-known songs like the hilarious "Saturday Night Fish Fry" are often quite as good as the recognized classics, and the band, which features Dr John on piano and the near-legendary R&B drummer Earl Jones, creates a subtle, seductive background for King to paint on.
Jones was 74 at the time of recording, by the way. King was only 73, a regular spring chicken.
Get this CD. It is one of the best, most mature albums of King's 55-year career.

Blues Sunnyside Up!.......2003-02-25

Quite simply, this is my favorite B.B. King album. Rollicking songs, great recorded sound, an outstanding rhythm section backing up B.B.'s fine vocals (now with a touch of gravel in them). I was toe-tapping from beginning to end. Who says you can't have your blues sunnyside up?

BB is a great blues performer, but his jump blues doesn't jump. Buy some actual Louis Jordan recordings, and really go for it!

I first heard this recording in London, at a small restaurant that was playing a series of great CDs. I asked the manager to give me the name, and when I returned home I picked up the recording. Since then I've probably listened to it 20 or 30 times. It is simply a great recording--funny, lively, high-spirited. My entire family loves it and we play it in the car all the time. Our favorite is "There ain't nobody here but us chickens," which never fails to get us all in a good mood. If you love B.B. King or Louis Jordan, get this CD.

I would highly recommend this cd to anyone who is a fan of Louis Jordan or B.B. King. B.B. does the original songs justice, and it's a great tribute to the late great Louis Jordan. From listening to this cd I have become a big fan of Louis Jordan, and appreciate him tremendously. When ya pick up this cd be sure to pick up a Louis Jordan cd also.

This has to be one of THE GREATEST box sets ever issued. LOUIS JORDAN * LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL contains 215 songs on nine CDs, as well as a beautiful 48-page LP-sized booklet filled with amazing photos, poster, magazine cover and advertising repros, a comic strip, news clippings, hand-written-on-legal-pad session notes, and an exhaustive discography, not to mention a fascinating bio and song commentary.

But the music-- oh, the glorious Tympani Five (6, 7, etc.)... They and Jordan created some of the most remarkable sounds you've ever heard. Here were the true beginnings of rock & roll-- 15 years before Elvis or Bill Haley, Louis Jordan and group were rockin' hard. Superb sound quality throughout on this German label compilation. Included is every DECCA Jordan side as well as some unissued material. The brief disc #9 features duets with Ella Fitzgerald.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL is a must-have for all fans of great swing, jazz, R&B, calypso and yes, early rock & roll. Highest possible recommendation.

Not a foot note but an Encyclopedia.......2006-02-26

I was introduced to Louis Jordan through Joe Jackson's "Jumpin' Jive" album when that was released around 1981. I loved it so much I sought out the original versions of the tunes Jackson covered and, in doing so, purchased a Louis Jordan's hits compilation. Every song on there was a gem! I had to find more but wound up with very little because all that was available were a few different hits packages.
Then, while trudging through the collections at the local music store a decade later I came across this wonderful box set put out by Bear Family of Germany. As with the Glenn Miller box set on RCA - house payment be damned! - I purchased it on the spot and never looked back. This set was/is everything I could hope for and more.
First off, the packaging is everything you'd expect from a high quality company such as Bear Family, with a lavish booklet and jewel-boxed cd's.
Next, of course, came the music. The sound quality is out of this world, considering how long ago this music was recorded. And the songs, well...one would think that it could get a bit tiresome listening to a set as large as this by one artist. Nope - not Mr. Jordan. With such great songs through out - Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens, Barnacle Bill The Sailor, What's the Use Of Getting Sober When You're Gonna Get Drunk Again, Caldonia...the list goes on and on - there's no way anyone would tire of this set.
The roots of rock and roll are here as well - Saturday Night Fish Fry rocks with the best of 'em.
I once read somewhere that most music compilations are like what foot (or crib) notes are to a novel. If that's the case then this Louis Jordan set on the Bear Family label is like an encyclopedia.

A Treasure, An Underappreciated Star.......2004-03-05

Somewhere along the way, Louis Jordan went from R&B King to nonentity. When the the Neoswing revival crested, Louis got some props, but not enough. This High Quality German Import, (sadly, it could never come from the U.S.) is a well-deserved monument to
a musician who should be as famous as Fats Domino, Nat King Cole,
Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, and countless other Hall of Famers. This box turns out to be a bargain after all.

The Ultimate Louis Jordan.......2002-01-27

What a set! Simply awesome! Heaven for Louis Jordan fans. This set contains a great deal of material that hasn't previously been on CD. Included are tracks from Louis short lived Big Band from the 1950's. As far as I know, none of Louis Big Band recordings are available elsewhere on CD. Louis Jordan is an American music treasure. Rock and Roll and Rap both have their roots in Louis Jordan. Comes with the usual fantastic oversized booklet, which tells Louis' story in detail. Included is a reprint of a comic strip which tells his story. There are also some reprinted advertisements, including Louis' endorsement for U-Haul! The discography is very thourough, too. It is a bit expensive, but it is an import from Germany. The Bear Family record label always takes great care with its reissues, transfering the music from the best available master recordings and restoring where needed. The music is tremendous fun and you won't regret your investment.

Can't stop.......2000-01-22

It's a low down dirty shame that Louis Jordan doesn't get more credit for the resurgence of swing/jump blues that we are currently experiencing. Everything there is about finger-snapping, toe-tapping rhythms and make-you-laugh-make-you-cry lyrics that permeates pop music today owes something to Jordan. This massive collection takes you through the major portion of Jordan's career and includes all his hits, and while there's some repetition of themes, melodies and even song titles, that only adds to the charm and character of Jordan's musical personality. In this world, men are lovable scoundrels, women want that elusive commitment, and best friends are not to be trusted with your girl. Find yourself a free 10 or hours or so and give these discs a spin. If you don't walk away with a cool, swinging upbeat outlook, jack you're dead!

This has to be one of THE GREATEST box sets ever issued. LOUIS JORDAN * LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL contains 215 songs on nine CDs, as well as a beautiful 48-page LP-sized booklet filled with amazing photos, poster, magazine cover and advertising repros, a comic strip, news clippings, hand-written-on-legal-pad session notes, and an exhaustive discography, not to mention a fascinating bio and song commentary.

But the music-- oh, the glorious Tympani Five (6, 7, etc.)... They and Jordan created some of the most remarkable sounds you've ever heard. Here were the true beginnings of rock & roll-- 15 years before Elvis or Bill Haley, Louis Jordan and group were rockin' hard. Superb sound quality throughout on this German label compilation. Included is every DECCA Jordan side as well as some unissued material. The brief disc #9 features duets with Ella Fitzgerald.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL is a must-have for all fans of great swing, jazz, R&B, calypso and yes, early rock & roll. Highest possible recommendation.

The holy grail.......2004-03-27

This collection is awe-inspiring. Don't let the cost stop you from buying it: it has it all of Mr. Jordan's Decca production. He was so good -- even on his worst songs -- that there's a surprise around every bend. Some of the unreleased sides are so good that you realize what high standards he had. And the final CD with I think 9 songs with Ella are unsurpassed. Damn the price. Buy it.
