When you possess a great pop voice, it's inevitable that you'll someday make a pop album, and Alison Krauss has finally made hers. Instead of bidding for radio airplay with the extravagant, extroverted pop of Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, or Celine Dion, Krauss has crafted an intimate, understated chamber-pop album reminiscent of Joni Mitchell's Blue or Rosanne Cash's Interiors. The material comes from such mainstream-pop writers as Michael McDonald, Todd Rundgren, Allen Reynolds, and Danny O'Keefe, but Krauss the producer gives the songs a distinctive spin. She layers the harmonies of her regular Union Station band, the Cox Family singers, pianist Matt Rollings, drummer Jim Keltner, and mandolinist Sam Bush to create a lush, hushed sound that's neither traditional bluegrass nor electric country-pop. Krauss multitracks her own fiddle parts and blends them with Jerry Douglas's Dobro to create an unorthodox string-quartet sound. Alison Krauss has a dazzlingly beautiful voice. I have bought several of her cds, hoping to find the one that speaks to the heart. But for me, her voice is just a little cold, just a little impersonal...the direct opposite of say, Johnny Cash, who couldn't actually sing, but his delivery almost always stirred true emotions. This cd is another clinically perfect item from the refrigerator, in my opinion.

Alison Krauss's new album is awesome! Great songs... all of them stay with you and get in your head!!! I recommend "Maybe" and "Ghost in this house"- those two are the best!!! You will def be impressed!!!!

I adore Alison Krauss's voice. Her music is exquisite and this album is no exception. All the tracks are great, although, unlike many of the reviewers, I'm not a big fan of Forget About It. My favorite is It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference. I go around singing this tune (it pops into my head without even listening to the CD) all the time. The songs on this album are so heartrending. Maybe, Ghost in this House, and Stay are excellent also. Maybe has the best harmonies, but It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference has the best words. Overall the album is excellent. Great for a sleepy Saturday afternoon. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

An Audiophile, Earthy - Alison Krauss / String Quartet.......2005-10-28

This CD was the deciding factor for me to buy Von Schweigert VM1 Monitors with Subwoofer. There is just so much warmth, musicality, nuance and emotion. In some ways better than the original. Better in the sense that the String Quartet transports you to a new yet familiar world. So it is a combination of Bluegrass, Classical and Jazz. A must have album for Audiophiles, fans of Alison Krauss and for those exploring new forms of music.
