Amazon.com essential recording

Few albums are as fueled by hope, possibility, and the lure of the open road as Born to Run, a virtual concept album about small-town Jerseyites in search of a better life via hot-rodding out on the turnpike, scoring some small-time hustle, or blowing out of town altogether, either across the river to New York City or west for parts unknown. Songs like "Jungleland," "Thunder Road," "Backstreets," and the title track are epic productions, both sonically and lyrically, borrowing from Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and West Side Story. When Born to Run was released in 1975, it earned then-unknown Springsteen the rare honor of simultaneous covers on both Time and Newsweek. The attention was warranted then, and it still is now. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Dont deny this review because im a "kid".......2007-07-15

I was not fortunate to hear this album back in the 70's (I am 13), but i know great rock when i hear it. From tracks 1-8, the boss reminds us WHY he's the boss.

1. Thunder road:

As one reviewer said, its lyrically the best opining on any rock song.

"The screen door slams, Marys dress sways.
Like a vision she dances across the porch, as the radio plays.
Roy Orbison's singin for the lonely, hey thats me and I want you only.
Don't turn me home again, i just cant face myself alone again."

The song, like the whole album in general, speaks of wanting to get the hell out of jersey with Mary, and if the run, they can do it.
"I know its late, but we can make it (the train outa there) if we run."

2. Tenth Avenue

Again, the opining lines are pure genius

"Tear drops on the city, Bad Scooter (same initials as bruce springsteen) surchin, for his groove.
Seems like the whole worlds walkin pretty, and you can't find no room to move."

This song is about the forming of the E street band
B.S, is down and out, till the big man (Clarence, the saxophonist) comes and "joins the band". The song is, rocky, jazzy, and full of life.

3. Night

No need for a quote
Anyone who works late at night will relate to this song easily

4. Backstreet's

A lyrical symphony, song writing mastery...the illiad.

"Endless juke joints and Valentino drag, where dancers scraped the tears
Up off the street dressed down in rags, running into the darkness
Some hurt bad some really dying, at night sometimes it seemed
You could hear the whole damn city crying, blame it on the lies that killed us
Blame it on the truth that ran us down, you can blame it all on me terry
It don't matter to me now."

This one verse alone sums up the anger terry and Bruce feel. They love each other, but they try to act like hero's to impress each other, to cheer each other up, in a world that NEEDS cheering. But all it brings them is hate and sadness...

5. Born to run

The American song. Gives you a rush every time you hear it. By the end, you'll be pumpin your fist to the drums, yelling along with Bruce,

"The highway's jammed with broken hero's, on a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight, but their's no place left to hide"

By the end of the song, you'll be standing, screaming at the top of your lungs "TRAMPS LIKE US, BABY WE WERE BORN TO RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNN!!"

6. She's the one

Eh, alright

7. Meeting across the river

"Eddy this guy he's the real thing
so if you wanna come along, you gotta promise you won't say anything, cause this guy don't dance
and words been passed this is our last chance"

Bruce and eddy are meeting with some dudes about something, but its big, and it could change the future for both of them. The piano/trumpet combo works great...

"Stay close tonight eddy, cause we got our selfs out on that line
and if we blow this one, they ain't just gonna be lookin for me this time
and all we gotta do his hold up our end...stuff this in your pocket, it'll look like your carrying a friend...

8. Jungleland

A perfect end, to a perfect album.

"Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender in a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal and then surrender in the tunnels uptown
The rats own dream guns him down as shots echo down them hallways in the
Night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away...Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light"

The song starts out Fast and furious, and features a great solo by Clarance...then gets dark, as the once happy barefoot woman and "rat", who had big dreams and aspirations, now see them shot down.
But, they learn to carry on, as did Bruce. Congrats. You created the best rock album of all time. I wonder how it feels...

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't experienced "Born to Run"..........2007-07-07

For me, it's just unimaginable to know music, and especially rock, without "Born to Run." This is one of the albums that I've grown up on since childhood, until each song has been so eternally emblazoned on my psyche that it brings so many memories. But outside of pure nostalgia, "Born to Run" is one of the premier rock albums ever in my mind. Bruce's third effort and first on a big budget, "Born to Run" captured people in 1975 with its good-time rocking music and lyricism that was all too real. But besides being a landmark triumph from a musical perspective, "Born to Run" accomplishes an amazing task by profiling the lifestyle of middle-class America in the seventies, surely making a grand statement. Bruce's depressing stories of the "losers," the wage-laboring men and women who get their weekend kicks by driving cars, hitting the boardwalk, and struggling through relationships, are inspirational and moving to someone of any economic standing. But outside of the lyrical content, the songwriting is phenomenal. The verses, solos, hooks, instrumentals, are all perfect. This is the album, to me, where the E-Street Band comes out of the background (although you could certainly say the same about The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle). Clarence Clemmons' sweet sax riffs, Gary Tallent and Max Weinberg's valuable contributions, and Steve Van Zandt's backup guitar simply add to the perfect product that is "Born to Run." The music is incredibly catchy, and each song in its own is a separate masterpiece. These are the kind of songs that will remain with you forever for numerous reasons, from the lyrics, the hook, the instrumentals, and the arrangement. If you own five music albums...make sure one of them is "Born to Run."

The first song is the rock n' roll classic "Born to Run," where Bruce evokes the spirit of Roy Orbison to create a simply beautiful rock and roll song, undoubtedly one of the greatest ever. And the twangy, piano-heavy rock of the joyful "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" makes just another absolutely timeless song. "Night" is an incredible ride through the nightlife of New Jersey, and it showcases the band in the spotlight. "Backstreets" is nothing short of incredible, from it's pumped-up intro with the piano, organ, and guitar to the rallying late-song chorus. The title song is certainly one of rock n' roll's finest, just a perfect song to me. "She's the One" and "Meeting Across the River" are probably the two lesser known songs from this album, but both embrace the musical and emotional spirit of the rest of the album. The final song is possibly my favorite, "Jungleland." Simply an amazing rock song.

If I haven't been able to express it to this point, "Born to Run" is a purely astonishing work of rock n' roll music that can be enjoyed on so many levels. Young listeners just getting into rock and roll might consider making this one of their first purchases. Otherwise, this is simply a must-have piece to any musical collection.

Born to Run is an incredible work---by far one of the best rock records ever made. It remains timeless too---year after year.

Not a huge Bruce fan. Moreso because i was born in 1986 and the only songs i ever really heard of him was all of his new stuff, and some of the overplayed songs that came off his "landmark" recording Born In The USA. To me, he hit his stride early with this amazing album. With a song like THUNDER ROAD, how can it not be amazing, the title in itself blows you away. The title track is amazing, as is more or less every other track here. Honestly if you are questioning if getting into Bruce is worth your time, don't bank on Born in the USA to change your mind. Look back at Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town. These are the albums that will move you, and my guess is that the songs on USA already make you sick and if they don't listen to classic rock radio for a day or two and then they will. Just my opinion

The first retooling of any album in the mighty Springsteen catalog is an exemplary labor of love by Columbia. The original 1975 release was the make-or-break record of Bruce's career and arguably still his best collection of material. It is presented here on one disc unsullied by outtakes or inferior versions--just pristine digital remasters of those eight grittily romantic songs of street life that defined the artist's signature styles. The substantial bonuses are two new DVD programs, one featuring a full concert performance by Bruce and the E Street Band on their first date outside the U.S. at London's Hammersmith Odeon in November 1975, and the other a "making of" documentary including band interviews and contemporary concert footage. The whole handsome box truly honors a legendary recording while providing generous value for fans.

The meat of the bonus material is the London show. A mythology has built around it that the band were so disorientated by travel and culture shock and Bruce so enraged by label-generated hype that they gave one of the worst performances of their career. Primitively shot by today's standards, the footage captures the brilliance of the relatively new band's ensemble playing. Highlights include a "Thunder Road" accompanied only by keyboards that opens the show, fiery solos on "Kitty's Back," a dynamic "Saint in the City," and a number of songs that have long since been retired. It's certainly notable how pensive and joyless Springsteen appears when compared to his later, animated stadium persona, but it's also fun to see the far greater role as foil played by Clarence Clemons. As he now testifies in the sleeve notes, putting lie to the myth, on that night they had "gone for broke," and as this writer can bear witness, the British audience exalted the show as the arrival of the greatest live performer of his generation. --Rob Stewart

The Best of Bruce
by guest editor Steve Perry
Steve is the editor-in-chief of City Pages newspaper in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (1973)
The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street ShuffleAfter a folk-rockish debut album that bubbled with ideas and dense lyrical play, this is where Springsteen began to find his voice as a rocker and as a songwriter. The prisoner-of-love romanticism of "Rosalita" and "Incident on 57th Street" hinted at what was coming, and this early version of the E Street Band--jazzier and more spare than later versions, thanks largely to David Sancious's piano--sounds great, if a little ragged, these many years later.

Born to Run (1975) and Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)
Born to Run Darkness on the Edge of Town These two records, which belong on any compilation of the top 100 rock albums of all time, sketched the themes that he would spend his whole career chasing, and defined the expectations fans would bring to his records ever after. The first chords of "Born to Run" sounded like freedom itself the first time I heard them on the radio, and the album lived up to them. "Thunder Road" is still the greatest rock & roll love song anyone's ever written. The record sounded so big and impassioned and propulsive it was easy to miss the dread running underneath it. Darkness... put the dread front and center. There are more of his best songs here than anywhere else, even if the sound is muddy and leaden at times.

Nebraska (1982)
NebraskaAfter The River (the best record that didn't make this list) and the ensuing tour answered his rock & roll prayers--he was a big star now, not just a perennial critics' favorite--Springsteen holed up in a rented house on the Jersey shore, where he wrote these songs and sang them into a four-track recorder in his living room. The tape was supposed to be a demo for the band, but after several false tries he concluded that the tape he'd been carrying around in his pocket was the record. Quiet and bleak, Nebraska nonetheless grabbed you by the collar and made you listen as surely as his rock & roll records ever had.

Tunnel of Love (1987)
Tunnel of LoveThe glare and hubbub surrounding the Born in the USA tour (the tour was great--the record itself overrated) made him pull back again, this time to write a cycle of songs about love and fear and self-doubt. After this, Springsteen's first marriage broke up, and he started a family with Patti Scialfa, disappearing for the better part of 10 years, notwithstanding the pair of not-bad, just-disappointing albums he released in 1992, Human Touch and Lucky Town.

The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995)
The Ghost of Tom Joad Some call it Nebraska II, but his second acoustic album was not a repeat of his first--the characters and settings had changed, and their circumstances were more expressly desperate, and social--though it did share the same interest in what happens to people whose isolation or marginal status renders them invisible.

The Rising (2002)
The RisingEverybody, including Springsteen, seemed to think it was a record about 9/11, but the subject was broader--death and loss as seen from more than halfway down life's road. Dave Marsh nailed it: "A middle-aged man confronts death and chooses life" Brendan O'Brien's production sounds great.

I would recommend the 3-disc remaster only for fans who are already familiar with the album and are further interested. The bonus material includes a "making-of" documentary and a live performance in London. Having seen Bruce live, I can say that the concert footage doesn't do him justice. The spectacle that is a Bruce Springsteen performance is a spectacular experience, and it's impossible to portray on video. Besides, Bruce is very young and appears a little overwhelmed in this footage, and I'm sure there's better available if that's what you're looking for. The packaging is pretty bulky. Old fans will probably enjoy the 30th Anniversary edition, but new fans should stick to the more economical Born to Run package.

5 out of 5 stars The Boss at his Best.......2007-05-29

What can you say but "The Boss" Springstein at his best. I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Still good after 30+ years on.......2007-05-13

I never would have purchased this set until I heard the live version of "Kitty's Back." Boom... Ordered it that night. Not only was the remastered CD a good trip past the years but the DVD! The band is tight and dressed out except for Springsteen. Made me dust off the Santana, Steely Dan, Van Morrison and Sinatra - believe it or not.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2007-05-07

The remastered album will only sound different from previous CD versions if you have very good headphones or a very good stereo, but the concert DVD (Live at the Hammersmith Odeon London 1975) and the documentary (Wings for Wheels) are worth the price on their own. There's also a booklet of small but sort of grainy pictures, taken from the tour and, possibly, the recording sessions.

The documentary has all sorts of interesting and funny insights into the production of the album, as well as insights into Springsteen himself. The concert DVD has shoddy picture, which is to be expected, but the sound quality and the quality of the performance itself more than make up for it. The picture booklet seems almost perfunctory, an afterthought, but even still, there are some interesting shots in it. And, again, the remastered audio will only sound different if you've got good headphones or speakers to begin with, but if you have that, it's wonderful.

If you're a fan, if you like good documentaries, or if you like a good concert on DVD, get this album. If you just want the songs and you're not an audiophile, just pick up the cheaper, non-30th Anniversary CD (which I don't believe was remastered, but I may be wrong).

5 out of 5 stars Great album and package.......2007-04-29

This is great stuff. The original album needs no introduction every track is a winner - its a 5 star album. From Thunder Road to Jungleland via Backstreets this is one of the great Springsteen albums. Perhaps what make this album standout from other Springsteen albums is its epic scale. This isn't prog-rock though, despite the length of some of the tracks. As I think Springsteen once said, he was trying to capture the drive of the Rolling Stones (at there early 70's peak), with the voice of Roy Orbison, and the production of Phil Spector. An ambitious combination, but the result is worth it.
The documentary DVD is interesting, but you may only watch it once - however documentaries are very subjective and what I found uninteresting you may love.
The concert DVD as other people have said is a bit dark! However, the performances are excellent, the E Street band are on fire, and I found it enthralling to see (or not!) Bruce and the band 30 years ago performing with such passion.
If you haven't already got Born to Run you should buy this, if you have, do what I did and get as a birthday present.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

4 out of 5 stars Standard George Rock & Roll.......2007-06-05

George Thorogood and The Destroyers released this record in 1988, and I bought it and still own it on vinyl. (I probably need to purchase the CD, hunh?) This was George still at really the height of his popularity - the mid 1980s -- and he was producing his own brand of standard rock and roll that was actually being played on the radio, which was some kind of miracle. If I'm not mistaken, two songs had videos that were played on MTV. I specifically remember the video for "Treat Her Right."

This CD is a rocker with tons of highlights. Serious rock and roll includes the reworked Elmore James tune "Shake Your Moneymaker" (an absolute pounder), "You Talk Too Much," and "Born to Be Bad," basically the sequel to "Bad to the Bone," his signature song that everyone knows. Other really good tracks that I like are "I'm Ready" (a Fats Domino tune), "Treat Her Right," and "I Really Like Girls," in which George proclaims his love of the fairer sex by repeating that he "really really really really really really likes girls," and then tells you what he likes about them, in case you were wondering. As usual, George reworks other old blues tunes like "Smokestack Lightning" and "Highway 49" (both Howlin' Wolf penned songs), a Chuck Berry song "You Can't Catch Me," and writes his own new standards, like "I Really Like Girls" and the absolutely hilarious now classic "You Talk Too Much," which any straight man in the world who's married or who's ever had a garrulous girlfriend (and who hasn't) can relate to. This is a solid album with no low points. It's one of his best, and probably one of his most commercial, but it's still George's very basic bare bones rock and roll. By the way, if you like George at all, you have to see him live because that's where he really shines. His live shows are still as good as anybody. He's a workhorse. I've seen him several times over the years and he's still great.

    3 out of 5 stars A solid offering..........2007-02-06

Not the best Thorogood album out there, but it has a few really good songs, and everything is classic Thorogood. I recommend it for people who like Thorogood but want to hear something different than all the popular songs.

4 out of 5 stars Bad to the Bone ---Badder than Metal.......2007-02-01

I can't believe there's only one other review out here for a truly outstanding rocking blues album by one of the best rocking blues bands there is.

It's a shame old George doesn't get the props musically that he deserves, but I guess blues journeymen are used to that. I hope he's made lots of bucks off the royalties from those commercials his music is featured in (Sam Adams, pickup trucks).

One of the things I've noticed about GT & the D's recordings over the years is there are usually 3 or four great songs on each one. Back in the old vinyl days, that wasn't enough to assure commercial success. But nowadays, with music down loads, you can pick the tunes you want for your personalized playlist.

My favorite four on this disc are: ' Shake Your Moneymaker', 'You Talk Too Much', 'Born to Be Bad', and 'I Really Like Girls'. If you have a convertable, this is top-down-full blast-roaring-down-the-highway music. If you don't have the car, 'Born to Be Bad' also is served well with beer and barbeque at parties, or boogie-down forest preserve picnic-fests.

Hey you metal-heads. Try this on for size. Definitely designed to get you rockin'.

    5 out of 5 stars Party time! Hard-rockin' good-time music........2005-04-15

George Thorogood acquired a reputation early on as a barroom band, suited for places where people go out and dance and drink and talk loud and laugh. His critics say this is his downfall; his fans say -- that's what he does best! This disc is a real smoker, jumping right out with "Shake Your Money Maker", then before you can sit down he launches his own song, "You Talk Too Much", and then burns through T-Bone Burnett's "Highway 49." A couple songs later George assures us, in Fats Domino's words, that he's "ready, willing and able," and you know that's true. He then tells the secret motive behind just about all his songs in his composition "I Really Like Girls." I think we guessed that, and even those of us who are married can appreciate the sentiment and the energy behind it. There is no "deep" meaning here, except that feeling alive and lively is the essence of life. So crank up the volume and have a good time. It's easy with this disc playing.

5 out of 5 stars The "Difinitive Collection" 1966-1990.......2005-02-19

Born To Be Wild "Retrospective" is a wopping 34 song tribute to Steppenwolf. This is Real Rock !! PowerHouse Rock !! Steppenwolf to this day still dedicate themselves to bringing us Rock n Roll. The style of Rock n Roll that we have craved and thrived on for decades. Steppenwolf Music is the "Rebel Rock" that speaks to all of us free spirited Rebels in the world.
This Retrospective comes with a fact filled booklet that gives an in depth history of Steppenwolf including some Great Photos.
The booklet alone is worth the price of admission. And thats just for starters. The encore presentation in this collection is the music.
Be prepared to get your rocks off with Hits like:
Magic Carpet Ride- Sookie Sookie- Rock Me- Move Over- Everybody's Next One- For Ladies Only- It's Never Too Late-
The Pusher- Screaming Night Hog- Born To Be Wild-
Hey Lawdy Mama- and the John Kay Hit "I'm Movin On".

Steppenwolf "Retrospective" is for everyone and anyone who wants a little wolf in their lives. John Kay calls this an Excellent Collection of the bands music. Today, Steppenwolf operates without any major label financing. They even have their own in house 24 track recording studio and they continue to tour several months out of the year.
    Final thought:
There is nothing retro about this Retrospective.
It is as current today as it was back then. "Go For It" !!

    5 out of 5 stars That's real NOW, man!.......2004-09-15

This is the ultimate Steppenwolf album! Fans of late 60's psychadelic/progressive rock will really appreciate this one. The songs included chronicle John Kay's rise to rock history, from his membership in the band "The Sparrow" through the drug-induced 60's and the formation of his now-famous band.

Along with Iron Butterfly, I consider Steppenwolf to be one of the bands that really defined the psychadelic rock scene in the late 60's, until the arrival of Led Zeppelin blew everyone away.

You will NOT be dissapointed with this collection. From "Twisted" to the much later live version of "Born To Be Wild" and Kay's 80's projects, Steppenwolf's folk and R&B roots can clearly be heard.

This compilation is not for the casual Steppenwolf fan; there are "best of" albums out there for you. If you are interested in the evolution and metamorphosis of rock n' roll bands, however, this 2-CD set is for you.

1 out of 5 stars poor sound quality.......2004-01-22

This is a wonderful collection of Steppenwolf. However, I was unaware that this CD set was transfered from analog tape and absolutely contains hiss and anomalies. I would have never purchased this particular recording on CD. The sound quality is so poor that it can only be listened to at a low volume level-quite unfortunate for tunes such as Born to Be Wild, Sookie Sookie and Magic Carpet Ride. Don't waste your money if you have become accustomed to and expect excellent sound quality from a CD. The music is good-just should have been digitally remastered or why bother?

5 out of 5 stars Two disks packed with Steppenwolf.......2002-08-05

Even with two disks you will be hard pressed to find a mediocre song. The transfer from vinyl to CD worked and many of your favorites are here. If you skip tracks to get though them you will be missing many essential tracks. Growing up with Steppenwolf as with any music you grow up with there is special meaning to many of these tracks that ad to the value. I was dating a girl named Sue so "Sookie Sookie" became her theme song. And more than ever "Monster/Suicide/America" is more relevant than ever.

If you buy only one Steppenwolf album consider this the one.

5 out of 5 stars A good overview of Steppenwolf 1966 to 1991.......2002-03-16

MCA Records has continued to released and re-release tons of Steppenwolf compilations over the years with the same songs, this is the only one that bears any identity in the pile. This 2-CD set is like a Steppenwolf history book, containing two Sparrow tracks from 1966 and covers the "Rise and Shine" album from 1990, and in between the 'Wolf hits and John Kay solo recordings. If you want a good insight, and excellent sound quality (which the current budget series reissues are lacking) and don't want to spend a lot, this is a good starting point. What would make this all complete for listeners is for Epic to re-release "Reborn to Be Wild" a collection of what the 'Wolf did between '74 and '76, then we would have a complete summary in 3 CDs...

4 out of 5 stars Some really great tracks.......2005-08-05

Dion is an artist that always gives you something you didn't expect. While I'm not a big fan of the "Wall of Sound" Phil Specter approach, I really liked "Your own backyard". It's an honest from the soul message of what he went through with drugs. Great cut!
"Queen of 1959" is a middle aged love song to someone who is obviously the love of his life. Nice to see that those feelings are still there after all the years. It gives hope for the future of marriage.
All in all, some great tracks on this set.

4 out of 5 stars Will it change your life? That depends, but hear this once!.......2004-12-31

When both Dion & Phil Spector joined forces in 1975, both personalities had been through the wringer in all senses of the word. Dion had kicked a life-threatening drug addiction that not only resulted in an image change away from his streetwise hipster persona, it also encouraged him to open up his heart more in terms of composing his own material, thus making him a sort of charter member of the burgeoning singer-songwriter movement.

Spector had all but retired from music after his self-proclaimed masterpiece of "River Deep-Mountain High" with Ike & Tina Turner had taken the charts by storm in Europe, but flopped badly in the States. His work with the Beatles (both collectively & individually) had made him a working producer again, but other than that, Spector seemed to want to work on a project-by-project basis, and when Dion hooked up with him for 1975's BORN TO BE WITH YOU, Spector had again dropped out of work.

The resulting album was not the commercial bonanza that was predicted, and critical response was muted at best. In the 3 decades since its release, however, BORN TO BE WITH YOU has gone the way of a lot of Spector's later-period works by becoming a cult classic & one of those albums that those who claim to love it, really & truly adore it. Even Dion had little good to say about the finished product, claiming to be just one small part of Spector's massive wall of sound. Those who only know of BORN TO BE WITH YOU from its impossibly-high legendary status will take care to listen to it at least once in their lives, even if admittedly, it may not be for all tastes.

As it looked, Spector could only muster up enough strength to put his work on 6 of the album's 8 songs, with the other 2 being produced by others, but having Spector conduct the orchestra on them (his most recent work with Starsailor was another such matter, with only 2 songs resulting from the collaboration). Apparently, Spector was rather shaken by the visitation of Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt to the sessions shortly after Bruce had made the covers of TIME & NEWSWEEK. But those 6 songs are nothing short of breathtaking, and Dion manages to rise above the din to make them his own.

The title track, which had been a hit for the Chordettes in the 1950s, is a 7-minute wall of sound demonstration if anything, literally surrounding the listener with echo and raw musical emotion. For someone who refused to use the most up-to-date recording technology, Spector achieved a real coup in making this song sound like the second coming as much as possible. When the song was edited down by only a minute for a single, radio airplay was perhaps still not in the cards, and honestly, would you want to see a natural wonder like this cut to shreds?

The Spector songs on BORN TO BE WITH YOU had the master producer working with some of the songwriters who had helped him make his legend in the 1960s, and likely this was to make him feel like he was working in the good old days. It worked because even though this was 1975, these songs could easily have been at home in the previous decade. Case in point is my favorite "Make The Woman Love Me". Having been recorded by Cher a little earlier, the team of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil had created another hearttugging masterpiece just like "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", and Dion was perhaps THE man to sing it. A lot of people claim that it borders on a stalker's plea, but Dion sings it with such passion & feeling, who would turn him down? He seems to be singing to God for help in winning this woman's love, so this is maybe a secular version of the religious material Dion would record a little later in his career after he had "found God".

After those two magnificent introductory songs, the rest of BORN TO BE WITH YOU was bound to pale in comparison, and it does for the most part. Yet there's no denying that Spector's painstaking attention to detail will help make even the more uninspired material wonders to behold. "Only You Know" & "In & Out Of The Shadows" (both co-written by Spector with Gerry Goffin) are examples of songs which are quite good in the end, but sound a bit anticlimactic after the grandeur of the first two.

Speaking of anticlimaxes, the non-Spector (or non-directly Spector, I should say) material cannot hold a candle to the songs he had a firm hand in creating. "Your Own Backyard" was a song Dion had recorded several years earlier shortly after he took a vow of sobriety, and was one of the most frightening and heartwrenching songs yet recorded. The second time around does not produce the same results, and one can only wonder how it would have sounded had Spector decided to not just simply direct the orchestra...an already scary song could have been the stuff of nightmares! "New York City Song" could also have benefited from something more than Cashman & West's overly-folky approach to production.

"[He's Got] The Whole World In His Hands" comes the closest to meeting those masterpieces with a much more reverent approach to singing God's praises, especially in the vocal arrangement which I hope is what greets me whenever I reach that great record store in the sky. Even this early, it is apparent that Dion's religious reformation was honest & true. It may be a bit too reverent for some listeners, but it is worth their best shot.

The album closes out with "Good Lovin' Man" (which Dion co-wrote with the master himself), which is the most authentic-sounding homage to Dion's early 1960s material, only magnified to the nth power thanks to Spector's Cinemascope production. Whoever does the background vocals, they are not credited on the album, but they give a fabulous vocalist like Dion a run for his money, and the contest ends in a draw with both of them working wonderfully together. The bonus track "Baby, Let's Stick Together" (co-written with Jeff Barry) works the same way, and it is a mystery why this did not make the final album because it would have fit in perfectly.

So maybe BORN TO BE WITH YOU has a slight reputation as a project that sounded exciting on paper, but did not meet expectations (how could it?!) in the end. Just maybe, it was TOO ambitious, and people did not or could not have the patience to endure repeated listens to discover different nuances every time. People like Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream and Jason Pierce of Spiritualized, who have clearly taken their extreme love of the album to bear in their own music, were probably ones who could, and just maybe they can be proof that BORN TO BE WITH YOU can change your life if you let it. I'm sure Dion's and Phil Spector's opinions of this album have improved in recent years, so if you can allow yourself enough time to take in all that this record has to offer, BORN TO BE WITH YOU just may turn out to be the legend a select & lucky few have deemed it to be.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING DION MASTERPIECE~BRAVO!!!.......2004-07-12

Soulful and magnificant is Dion throughout this classic "Born To Be With You" album giving the most incredible performances of his brilliant career to date!! Loose and soulful on the great opener "Born To Be With You", Dion has always been one of my all time favorite male vocalists and this wonderous song should have been a huge hit but like Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" radio refused to play it for some strange reason. Anyone who loves great music will go nuts over this masterwork and "Make The Woman Love Me" is a soul-deep and riveting performance that is stunning and completely stirring with Dion at his peak on another classic. Fighting off addictions successfully in "Your Own Back Yard" is revealing while Dion's uniquely original take on the standard "(He's Got)The Whole In His Hands" is hypnotic and mesmerizing. Beautifully flowing like a ride on a carousel is the engaging "Only You Know" and a great New York song which is an appropiate theme coming from Dion is the gorgeous and engrossing "New York City Song". A masterful "In And Out Of The Shadows" is another soulful Dion athem that is really a knock-out and has me using the repeat mode numerous times as is the infectious and ususual "Good Lovin' Man" which is a rhythmic and rocking cooker! Fascinating is the 50's sounding jam "Baby Let's Stick Together" that has a great beat and a hand clapping chorus with great background vocals that are all brilliantly mixed together to great effect making this a grand finale for a true masterpiece!! "Born To Be With You" is such a brilliant and epic work that it is a hard one to follow but "Streetheart" works nicely as it is a pop-soul classic set versus an epic masterpiece. A fine version of Smokey Robinson's "The Way You Do The Things You Do" opens this great set with Dion in loose and top form! Another strong performance makes "Runaway Man" engrossing while "Queen Of '59" is classic Dion in a great setting. Longing and yearning make "If I Can Just Get Through The Night" another stellar performance and it is amazing that radio didn't pick up on this one as it really sounds like a hit. "More To You (Than Meets The Eye)" is a gorgeous and romantic pop song and things quickly heat up and go into high gear with the rhythm rocker "You Showed Me What Love Is" where Dion lets loose and gives another amazing performance that should have been a hit!!! Haunting on the soulful "Hey My Love", Dion is powerful on this great ballad and this too could have been a hit with any airplay at all and brought Dion to the charts in the 70's which should have happened with the quality of this incredible two-album double delight set! Another engaging Dion original "Oh The Night" is a romantic cooker and the musicans throughout this great work are totally inspired including greats such as Ernie Watts, Nino Tempo on a mean sax, Phil Everly on harmony and background vocals!! "I'll Give You All I've Got" is truly great and Dion does exactly that giving his all throughtout this great mix of songs and it is amazing that this was not a blockbuster album during the boring Disco period of the 70's-what a pathetic trade-off and a complete rip-off to Dion and the American public who really lost out missing this masterpiece!!! Wow!!! A hot rocking "Lover Boy Supreme" is another wonderous Dion original and clearly a master at his peak in every way and with airplay this could have gone to #1 in a flash! Closing is classic Dion giving his best on the title "Streetheart" which is another total winner in a totally winning collection. His loose and soulful scatting in this great song is unlike anything I have ever heard from this great singer who is one of my all time favorites!! Bravo Dion!!! You are awesome... DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!!!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Dion Rocks.......2004-06-21

One of my most favourite CDs.Dion has a beautiful singing voice as a solo artist. Most people seem to be most familiar with his material from his days with The Belmonts, but I love both albums on this CD.Each album has a different sound to it.Dion sounds a little spaced out on Born To Be With You.Streetheart has a bluesy peaceful jazz sound to it.Back when I was ten years old,I remember having a"20 original hits,20 original stars"type of album called Blazzing Bullets on eight-track tape, during the days when eight-track tapes were the norm.Dion's Make The Woman Love Me was included on the tape.Buying this CD from the internet in much more recent time, marks my first time ever hearing this song since I was ten.In And Out Of The Shadows is a perfect slow dancing song.I love this song so much, that I sometimes find myself singing along to it.The saxophone is beautifully played in the song Streetheart.

5 out of 5 stars aspire to greatness.......2003-07-25

your life will not be complete until you hear dion sing "make the woman love me". it is a great lyric, interpreted by one of the great singers, with that great big "wall of sound" behind him.
the title song is also one that grows on the listener, and i essentially enjoyed all the other phil spector production numbers with the painful exception of "he's got the whole world in his hands" - that should have been left off the album.
The 2 other songs on the album, "you're own backyard" and "New york City Song" are both first rate, and more of what you'd expect from dion. they sound like they would fit better on the "sanctuary" album than on this album because they are clean and strightforward recordings (no wall of sound).
the streetheart album is memorable for "if i could just get thru the night" . the rest of the album is nothing more than bonus tracks compared to the born to be with you collection of songs, which clearly aspire to greatness, and actually achieve that goal several times

4 out of 5 stars Cool LP Sleeve Design, Not So Great Sound!.......2006-03-26

This is probably Bruce's most critically-acclaimed album and the tracks still sound as good as they've always done but now we get them in a cool lp sleeve format. This gatefold sleeve has all the lyrics printed on the inside covers albeit you'll need a good magnifying glass to read them but it's still a nice touch. No need to despair though as both the Japanese and English lyrics are also reproduced on an insert.

Why just 4 stars then? Well, the recording isn't remastered and so the sound is about the same quality as the cheaper U.S. press that you can get you hands on elsewhere and I'm supposing the 30th Anniversary edition that's just been released and is apparently remastered/enhanced (I've not heard it and so I can't confirm the quality)may actually sound a lot better.

As far as unremastered discs go, this is probably quite decent if you don't mind the muddy sound but seeing as how practically everybody and their grannies have had their classic albums remastered and cleaned up, I wonder what's keeping Bruce's people from doing the same.

So unless you are a very big fan of lp sleeves like I am, you may not want to spend the extra bucks on this.

Don't get me wrong, the album is still great with regards the tracks but I guess if you already have this, what's it going to take to make you wanna get another version of the same thing? I'm guessing it's either vastly improved sound quality and/or improved packaging. This disc only fulfils one of these two criteria so you decide what you wanna do.

By the way, it's the same with the other titles in this format like "Born In the U.S.A." and "Darkness...Town" etc. just so you know. As I don't already have copies of these discs, I didn't mind too much but I don't know about you.

      5 out of 5 stars The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11

Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!

4 out of 5 stars Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15

I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.

Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.

I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.
