Not exactly a country artist, since her records lack twang, and too casual and intimate to make for a standard-issue MOR pop performer, Anne Murray's phenomenally warm, smooth voice has nevertheless secured a lofty place for her in both categories--and has occasionally brought her into the mainstream (read: traditionally rock and soul dominated) pop arena. If you're not a fan, or much of a country enthusiast, it's her '70s pop hits that'll make the package worthwhile. "Snowbird" is here, as is "You Needed Me." If you are a fan, or are looking for songs that hit only on the country or Canadian charts, there'll be a lot of key stuff missing. Investigate the 3 CD Now and Forever collection. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars And if I could you know that I would fly away with you.......2007-07-13

Anne Murray has such a beautiful voice. My favorite song on this CD is "Snow Bird." It is such a beautiful melody. Some of my other favorite tracks on it are: "Could I Have This Dance" and "Shadows In The Moonlight." Ms. Murray is such a multi-talented contemporary country singer. It is shame that today's throw-away musicians don't have a tenth of the talent that Anne Murray has. The entire CD is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars good product.......2007-03-09

overall a good cd kinda had songs on there that i didnt think should be and a particular song i thought should be wasnt on there

5 out of 5 stars Anne Murray The Best So Far.......2006-12-29

This is a super collection of Anne's best. It makes you want to just replay over and over. The love and memories are the greatest. A wonderful artist who just can't grow old.

5 out of 5 stars One Song Missing.......2006-08-13

This is a great CD but there is one song missing from this collection. Walk Right Back should be on this CD. It was a wonderful song that she did in the 70's. She actually does it better than The Everly Brothers.

5 out of 5 stars The Best So Far Ann Murray.......2006-02-17

I love it and I recommend it to any Ann Murray fan.

With a distinctive voice and controversial statements, Sinead O'Connor was briefly in the limelight and quickly in the doghouse. But even her opinionated politics can't take away from the beautiful work she's contributed to the post-punk canon. O'Connor's poignant delivery of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," is still heart-wrenchingly painful. "Troy" is equally evocative. So Far... The Best of Sinead O'Connor provides a thorough sampling of O'Connor's early years. Emotionally charged rockers like "Emperor's New Clothes" and "Mandinka" are essential inclusions, as are her rhythmic explorations with Bomb The Bass, "Empire," and the early "I Want Your (Hands On Me)." Sadly, her Cole Porter contribution to Red, Hot, And Blue was omitted. But O'Connor proves she rightfully deserves diva status with her rendition of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." As if there were ever any doubts. --Steve Gdula

4 out of 5 stars Conservative selection.......2006-10-02

This useful round-up of the most commercially successful period in the career of Sinéad O'Connor of course kicks off with the memorably wonderful Nothing Compares 2 U and concentrates mainly on the hit singles, but in their album versions. Owners of the albums that these selections come from will find little that they don't already have, the only exceptions being a shorter Thank You For Hearing Me (at 4.34 presumably a vinyl single edit) and Empire, a Bomb The Bass track on which she guests with Benjamin Zephaniah.
Key album tracks such as the vengeful Last Day Of Our Acquaintance, I Am Stretched On Your Grave and Fire On Babylon are also included, though had the collection been a little more adventurous it would have been nice to see some of the hard to find experimental early singles such as I Want Your (Hands On Me) with MC Lyte, or the notorious Jump In The River duet with Karen Finley. As it is, this collection mostly serves the more casual listener who does not expect to soon buy any of her albums.

NB This review refers to the UK import version of this album, whose tracklisting differs slightly to that listed above at time of writing

3 out of 5 stars "There's no other Troy, for her to burn".......2005-11-20

Without doubt one of the most talented singers to have emerged in the last 20 years and her albums huge successes, so a best-of seemed like a good idea. So Far...The Best Of does provide the casual listener with some of O'Connor's biggest hits such as the huge "Nothing Compares 2 U", "Mandinka", "Fire on Babylon" and so on, but as a real O'Connor I must say that it omits way too many of her greatest songs. Sure, "best-of" collections are for people who wants the best and biggest only, but unfortunately this compilation doesn't even manage to give that; for instance, why include "Empire" and not "Three Babies"? And why "Heroine" and not "You Do Something to Me" or "This Is a Rebel Song? As I've said, most people wouldn't even know the difference, but as a fan I feel like the casual listener is missing out on some of her greatest moments. I'm glad that they included "You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart" that at least, redeems it from total failure. If you want the "best-of" Sinead O'Connor don't buy this one; save your money and wait for a real sampling or just buy "The Lion and the Cobra" and "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" as these were her best.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Great.......2005-09-28

I love Sinead O'Connor. I love that she doesn't care what people think of her. Or, even better, she does care, but she does what she needs to do anyway. I think that's the sign of a great artist. Heck, I even like her bald head.

Oh, and then there's the music. Don't let it be overshadowed by her public persona, because the music is what it's about. If I don't give 5 stars to this CD, it's because some of the choices are odd. "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina"? How about "Rebel Song" or "Three Babies"? Still, I did hear some of my favorites here: "Mandinka," "The Emporer's New Clothes,""I Am Stretched On Your Grave," etc. etc. And for those of you who came to Sinead because of the Prince cover- well, that's in here too.

2 out of 5 stars you made me cold, and you made me hard.......2005-04-23

Have to buy this one, because it contains "You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart," O'Connor's most powerful and most exact expression of familial devastation. The song anchored Jim Sheridan's film "In The Name Of The Father," here it expiates surrounding detritus.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Collection.......2005-01-15

Given the fact that Sinead hasn't had a radio hit since 1990 (I believe), this "greatest hits" collection is amazing. I haven't really followed Sinead religiously, except for a couple of albums. This CD has it all. The songs showcase Sinead's unique vocals as well as her writing talents. It's a shame she faded from the public. Whether it's from the media or through her own fault, her low key presence has caused many to miss out on some great music.

A+++

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Rod's career.......2005-05-21

Double disc set of 34 tracks, digitally remastered. Disc One is titled "A Night Out" and contains uptempo and Rock tracks such as "Maggie May" (complete version), "Rhythm of My Heart", the Faces' classic "Stay With Me", and the playful raunch of "Hot Legs" & "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".

Disc Two - "A Night In" - focuses on Rod the balladeer with his haunting versions of other peoples' songs: "Sailing" (Gavin Sutherland), "Have I Told You Lately" (Van Morrison), "I Don't Want To Talk About It" (Danny Whitten - Crazy Horse); plus his own compositions such as "The Killing of Georgie Pts 1 & 2" and "You're In my Heart (The Final Acclaim)". Best of all is the hard-to-get Python Lee Jackson classic "In a Broken Dream".

Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A near perfect collection.......2002-06-29

The CD is the absolute best collection of Rod Stewart's hits out there. The only reason this missed a 5 star rating is due to the ommission of five songs: Passion, Infatuation, People Get Ready, Forever Young and My Heart Can't Tell You No. However, all five of these songs can be found on Downtrain Train: Selections From The Storyteller Anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Asronishing talent.......2007-03-23

My wife and I just caught Paul Thorn live (solo acoustic) opening for David Bromberg and The Angel Band (featuring David and his quartet backing up his wife's amazing a capella trio). Amazing, astonishing, inventive, and utterly charming. His songs are great - his stories even better. I was grinning like a fool through the entire performance and had a brief but thoroughly enjoyable chat with him during the set break. I listened to the CD on the drive dome and his sound with the band is quite different but every bit as enjoyable.

If you have a chance to see this man perform live - do it. In the mean time, if you enjoy great storytelling, strong southern blues, and rocking guitar work, pick up this DVD/CD. It's a great value and will be an often played addition to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the DVD alone. .......2007-02-06

I discovered Paul Thorn by accident in the fall of 2005 when he was opening for Huey Lewis. I have since acquired every bit of his music I can lay my hands on, and have seen him live once. The DVD gives a flavor of his live performances by including some of his many stories...it seems each song has a story.

Paul Thorn is an amazingly talented and versatile songwriter. He can make you laugh with songs like "Burn Down the Trailer Park" and "Viagra", then turn around and make you cry with "I Have a Good Day" and "Things Left Undone". Besides his skill with lyrics, the music is sometimes bluesy, sometimes country, sometimes rock. He can't really be categorized.

The CD contains many of his standards. If you have not been introduced to Paul Thorn, this combo set is an excellent place to start. You will find yourself checking his schedule on his website for an opportunity to see him live.

1 out of 5 stars Too good to be true, but it is...........2006-11-04

Paul and the band give you a dose of what's in store for you if you ever get the chance to catch 'em live.A great mix of story-telling, humor, pathos and musicianship all wrapped up in one roaring good time. If you can watch this without laughing out loud, tapping your feet, and just plain, old feeling good, you've got a hole in your soul. So watch it twice and let Paul work his magic. You won't be disappointed....

5 out of 5 stars Live is the best.......2006-09-07

This is really a DVD with a bonus CD. If you have never seen Paul in concert this is a must have set, if you have seen him you will want to add this to your collection. This was recorded in Atlanta and I found the DVD is to be a good substitute for being there. I have been enjoying Paul's work for a while now and this is the best offering of his yet.

5 out of 5 stars A Special Performer.......2006-09-04

Paul Thorn is a man of many hats; a talented musician, singer, songwriter, stand-up comic & "inspirational leader" (oh, and a former boxer). Thorn and his talented band cruise through a fun set of bluesy rock, interjected by his good-spirited, often self-deprecating humor. Guitarist Bill Hinds proves equally adept at blistering blues-rock ("Heart With 4 Wheel Drive"), feather-light slide guitar a la Lee Roy Parnell ("Every Little Bit Hurts") and everything in between. Keyboardist Michael "Dr. Love" Graham adds a somber organ to the latter tune, & propels the energetic stomper "Mission Temple Fireworks Stand" with his rock'n'roll piano. The band lays down a wickedly funky groove on the deliriously silly "Ain't Love Strange", while the bouncy "Lover's Vacation" coasts along with carefree abandon.
A reocurring theme in Thorn's songwriting is, not surprisingly, the idea of continually getting back up after being knocked down, and the hope of better things ahead ("I'd Rather Be A Hammer Than A Nail", "Rise Up", "I Have A Good Day", "There's Something Out There"), which may further explain his charismatic appeal. He is a champion of the underdog who can relate to his audience, while not taking himself too seriously.
Don't make the mistake of thinking Thorn is simply a novelty act. He's an original artist who deserves to be discovered. And at this price, this CD/DVD package is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Collection Of Cindy Morgan's Music.......2007-06-14

I remember a couple of my favorite Cindy Morgan songs that did not make this collection: "Love Will Break Your Fall" and "Reason To Live". Are there any songs out of these 14 that should be taken off to make room for one of these two? Not really. That means this is a good collection.

Besides the two I mentioned, this collection also has these other personal favorites: "Sweet Days Of Grace", "How Can I Ask For More", "Real Life", "Listen", "Let It Be Love", and "I Will Be Free".

5 out of 5 stars Her Best is as Good as Anybody Else!!.......2006-07-12

While from album to album, Cindy Morgan's songs can be inconsistent (especially on her first two CDs), when she hit her stride with LISTEN and UNDER THE WATERFALL, in particular, and THE LOVING KIND (which got majorly overlooked), she is as good as anybody else out there. This is truly an exceptional collection. When Cindy Morgan is good, she is really, really good: "Sweet Days of Grace," "How Could I Ask for More," "I Will Be Free" (for my Grammie W. . .), "Listen," "I'll Stand," "Praise the King" & "Take My Life," for starters. The two new tracks are great, too--I love her take on "Love is the Answer." Her best is as good as anybody out there in Contemporary Christian music, and this is a superb collection of those top shelf songs. Not sure I would have added much or left off much. No fluff, no filler--just her best!

4 out of 5 stars A powerful set of songs!.......2005-07-25

The songs on this project are all so powerful and run the gamet from soft ballads to hard rock. I prefer the ballads but am so impressed by Cindy's ability to sing the whole range powerfully and evocatively. What a voice and a range she has! I became familiar with Cindy Morgan through the song "How Could I Ask for More?" It boils down life's blessings to the most essential, and now that my father has died, the lyrics are poignant to me. "Love is the Answer" is a great re-make of the rock classic with a Christian emphasis. "I Will Be Free" is powerful - my husband wants it sung at his funeral because it's an uplifting statement of what Christians long for and look forward to when God calls us home. "Take My Life" is a heartfelt plea to take the sadness and sorrow of life and replace it with the love that only God can give - it is a song that I relate to so strongly. "Praise the King" is a simple but super P&W chorus. Cindy's songs challenge too, "Real Life" and "Listen" for example, as well as "How Could I Ask for More". It's a great CD.

4 out of 5 stars Super singer and person, wish she did more like Genie.......2004-07-27

I love Cindy MOrgan as a person and as a writer and singer.

Her career seems kind of erratic and confused sometimes, as if pulled by record company interests into trying to be all kinds of thigs.

I like her best when she's doing the really quiet and serene music like "I will Be Free".

There's another artist who I unearthed who is so super special who only does music like Cindy's quiet stuff- she's this obscure Amish artist I discovered named GENIE.

CHeck Genie out. I think she will really please you and that's not any slam against Cindy Morgan cause she's really neato too.

5 out of 5 stars Cindy's Best.......2003-08-18

Cindy Morgan's CD release THE BEST SO FAR offers up her most haunting melodies and vocals which have made Cindy one of Christian music's best loved artists. Her writing gets into her soul and shows her true faith and love for Our Creator. I highly advise any Cindy Morgan fan to add this amazing CD to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Genius, pure and simple!.......2005-08-19

I heard of James Morrison years ago in the pages of Downbeat mag. The picture showed this guy surrrounded by about 7 or 8 diffferent horns. I'm thinking "I'd be impressed if this guy could play one of those horns well". Mr. Morrison hails from Down Under, so his recorded work until recently wasn't available stateside. After listening to this retrospective of all of his CD's, I can tell you right now my jaw hit the floor as I was listening to his work! On several cuts, you'll hear a very tight, hard-swinging big band. When you read the liner notes, you'll learn Morrison plays all the trumpets, trombones, and saxes and piano as well! On other cuts, he plays only the saxophone, or just a euphonium. But his main axe is the trumpet and he blows the hell out of that! He plays a number "Scream Machine" that is a tribute to "Chase" in that he overdubs 5 trumpets that as the title implies....SCREAMS! But Morrison isn't just a technician with great chops. He swings like crazy, and his improvisations cover the history of jazz trumpeters, from Satchmo, to CT, to Dizzy and Miles. I've also listened to the entire CD "Scream machine" and that was also a great purchase for all the reasons given above. People fawn all over Wynton, Nick Payton, Roy Hargrove, and some of the other "Young Lions".....none of them have ANYTHING over James Morrison!! In fact, because he encompasses so many styles and appproaches so damn well, I'd say he is the one to be watching. Get this CD and be floored, and then pray that some American record company wakes up and gets this guy over here on another label besides an import!

5 out of 5 stars Highlights from an Unfortunately Short Career.......2007-07-19

Back in the early 90's, Susan Ashton burst onto the Christian music scene with a couple very well reviewed CD's. Before she tried to cross over to a country artist, she released four projects for Sparrow and this best of.

This CD was released after her third project came out. That third CD only gets two songs here. It didn't have great success at radio, which is a shame because it had some great tracks. They just weren't radio friendly. "Waiting for Your Love to Come Down" and "Remember Not" were more radio friendly, but they weren't the best that CD had to offer. And they continue to be the weak links here.

The rest of the CD will brings smiles of remembrance from anyone who listened to Christian radio during Susan's heyday. It opens with "Here in My Heart" and includes such staples as "Down on My Knees," "No One Knows My Heart," and my favorite "In Amazing Grace Land." Interestingly enough, the CD closes with "Beyond Justice to Mercy" which was never a hit at radio. I must admit I didn't like this song of reconciliation, but it has grown on me.

As most collection CD's do, this one has two new tracks. "Stand" is a song of commitment in spite of the trials of life. "Hide or Seek" is classic Susan as it talks about the decision to seek or hide from God's love.

I'm not quite sure what killed Susan's Christian career, but I miss her music. Her few releases are still regular staples in my CD player. And this excellent collection will show you exactly why.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Ashton sings like an angel.......2003-11-20

Susan Ashton is a contemporary Christian vocalist who is writing and singing songs that are as good as (or better than) any pop artist in today's Top 40.

This greatest hits album is a perfect introduction to Susan Ashton's music. One of the most immediate things you'll hear is her magnaminous voice: God gave Susan Ashton some impeccable pipes, and she knows how to use them. This singer has one of the most pristine and herculean voices in popular music today (think Martina McBride, a good comparison). Moreover, Susan sings with passion, knowing instinctively how to convey the personal feelings associated with her songs.

Of course, a central dimension to these songs is the unmistakable Christian themes. Whether she's encouraging us to "reach out beyond justice to mercy, going more than halfway to forgive," or acknowledging that "no one knows my heart better than [God]," or proclaiming she'll "stand...for what I believe," you can expect to hear messages to which all believing people relate.

This album contains some of the finest songs in contemporary Christian music. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars testament to an amazing voice and a life lived for Christ.......2001-07-08

Many may not know that Susan Ashton was one of the most popular and respected contemporary Christian vocalists for most of the 1990s before her crossover to country music. This compilation highlights some of her greatest work in that genre and includes selections from her first three albums (Wakened by the Wind, Angels of Mercy, Susan Ashton) and two additional cuts.

Susan Ashton possesses a pure, gorgeous voice that immediately captivates. It is an incredible, expressive gift honed by a passion for her craft and a commitment to her calling -- it is a precise, masterful vocal presence. "So Far" is a testament to an amazing voice and an even more amazing partnership with songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick. His intelligent, thoughtful lyrics and gorgeous melodies go straight to the heart of the Christian walk. Together they create some of the most honest testimonies of living faith you may ever hear.

Much of this material would be considered acoustic pop/rock with some country leanings and even a little jazz ("Remember Not"). It's difficult for me to pick a favorite -- the entire album is excellent. I do wish that more material from the third release ("Susan Ashton") had been included -- "Summer Solstice" in particular.

If you are a fan of warm, rich, confident vocals over spare, sophisticated lyrics reflecting a life for Christ, then SO FAR -- and all of Susan Ashton's earlier work -- is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Susan Ashton.......2001-06-16

After listening to a few new country women act, I came across Suan..she has a beautiful voice and her choice of song material is outstanding and thoughtful,,Yeah! I think she could be a big cross over star.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2000-07-07

Wow! That's what I said to myself when I first got this CD a while back. This is the CD that first introduced me to the music of Susan Ashton and to put it simply, all I can say is that it is truly amazing. Hearing "So Far", I was very impressed by the clean cut and clear vocals of Ms. Ashton. More importantly, the faith in God that each and every song on "So Far" stands for has been so uplifting. "So Far" is a collection of Ashton's biggest hits from '91-'93 as well as two new songs for 1995. The two new songs, "Stand" and "Hide or Seek", are two powerful ballads of faith and hope. "Stand" encourages us to not be afraid but to go in God and praise him-following his will as we confess each sin and just let him bring joy to our lives. "Hide or Seek" tells us not to be afraid of anything, but to stop running and come to God for love, help, and hope because he already knows everything about us and loves us anyway. These are two very heartfelt optimistic songs. Of Ashton's previous hits that appear on this album, my three favorites are "Ball and Chain", "In Amazing Graceland", and "Grand Canyon"-all ballads. "Ball and Chain" and "In Amazing Gracelane" just fill me with so much hope about God's mercy, and they really help the listener appreciate more fully the love and warmth of God. "Grand Canyon" makes you think about driving out in the country and admiring the view-the song totally makes me see God and his grandeur in the beauty of nature everywhere. "Grand Canyon" just makes me want to love Him more. This CD has gotten me through many rough times with it's positive encouragement, and I recommend it to anyone looking for truly uplifting spiritual music. Each song on "So Far" also has a clear country music sound to it, so mainstream music listeners who like country music will also enjoy "So Far". Excellent work, Susan-I predict that you'll go far not only in the Christian music world but in the country music world too! Keep up the good work!
