Customer Reviews:
outstanding songs, great vocals, excellent instrumentals........1999-11-19
Who are these guys (and gal)? And where have they been all my musical life? This album gives a very generous fifteen (15!) song selections; but WHAT great songs. Gillian Welch, Harlan Howard, Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester...songwriters just don't get any better than this. And if you like what Maura O'Connell does with a Henry Hipkens song, you will LOVE Gina Blaber...smooth, smokey, and swingin'. Kevin Russell sounds like James Taylor and Hank Williams, blended together, with a dash of Ricky Skaggs. These guys are definitely not your typical bluegrass or newgrass band. The harmonies are clean and sophisticated (Layne Bowen, the mandolin player, adds some great harmony lines, in addition to playing some really tasty licks on his mando). There is nothing fancy or tricky about this music. You can tell these folks really love the songs they do, and it shows. If you like the "sound" of bluegrass and or swing, and you're tired of "Uncle Penn" and "Sally Goodin", try this CD. I don't think they will make Top-40 radio, but they are definitely among the Top-40 coolest albums of '99. I dig it. Bet you will too.
A Stunningly Beautiful, Infectious CD!.......1999-11-10
"Out Among the Stars" is a stunningly beautiful CD, a first for the Modern Hicks. There's some familiar favorites, some "sleepers" of popular songwriters, as well as three songs penned by an attorney (in my opinion he should trade his day job in). No matter which of the 15 songs you hear, the incredible vocals, instrumentation and production shine through. These musicians are obviously very talented, and their work together and interpretation of the songs has a unique and infectious flavor. Although "Out Among the Stars" has its own definitive sound, the CD blends beautifully with other bluegrass, folk, country and alternative productions.

Customer Reviews:
Not Great........2006-02-17
Merle Haggard is the best country music artist ever, but this album is one of his worst. There are a few good listens. The title track is good, but there is too overprocessed. If you are a big Haggard fan, then it is worth trying to find this, but beware this is among the rarest of the rarest to find on CD of Haggard, so you will pay a lot for it.
If you are a casual Haggard fan, don't bother with it, because this is not a great album. The cover of the CD makes you think that Haggard was at a bad time in his life, which he was as he was in the middle of his years of heavy drinking, drug use, among other problems. This release certainly shows that sometimes even the best of the best can release a stinker.
