Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
He died on New Years Day 1953 on the back seat of his Cadillac on the way to a concert. Herman P. Willis, better know as Hank Williams, was the first super star of country music. Many of his songs became classics and are still sung by numerous artists today. Hank Williams turned country music upside down and tore down its borders which is why he is still a major inspiration for the alternative country movements of the present day. On the 50th anniversary of his death we want to remember one of the greatest - if not the greatest - singer/songwriter of the 20th century. Features 27 tracks including the hit 'Ramblin Man'. Trikont. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

    5 out of 5 stars A marvelous interpretation!.......2005-07-05

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

    Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Centuries before Lennon and McCartney, English Renaissance composer John Dowland was a master of song craft who penned the most popular tune of his time. His music, steeped in melancholy even deeper than was the fashion of the time, has inspired the Hilliard Ensemble's John Potter and colleagues to perform a visionary collaboration for In Darkness Let Me Dwell, a collection that imparts the power and profundity of Dowland's music. --Thomas May

    Amazon.com

The past cross-fertilizes with the present on this album, and the result is music-making of profound beauty. Tenor John Potter, a core member of the Hilliard Ensemble, here sets out to "reclaim" for today's audience the music of John Dowland. Even considering the Elizabethan penchant for melancholy, the saturnine Dowland stands out as an artist preoccupied with death and intimate with despair in all its varieties. Music--as against our postmodern antidepressants--was the perfect anodyne, to which Dowland devoted himself both as performer (he was a famous lutenist) and composer; with his collection Lachrimae ("Tears"), he produced one of the single greatest landmarks of Western instrumental music predating the high baroque, centering around the famous melody Dowland gave to his malady (also heard in the two versions here of the song "Flow My Tears"). In Darkness Let Me Dwell juxtaposes numbers from Lachrimae with some of Dowland's songs, in which Potter becomes so steeped in each mood that it tells in wonderfully plaintive phrasing. Dowland originally wrote for lute and a consort of viols, but it's typical of this disc's innovatory spirit to hybridize baroque violin and lute with a quasi-"jazzy" double bass, saxophone, and bass clarinet, inspiring a high order of improvisatory gestures. Sometimes the whole ensemble takes on a gritty, darkly reedy cast, while it can change to sunnier colors in the more radiant moments of "Lachrimae Amantis." These performances highlight the songs' directness and universality, drawing you in deeper with each hearing, and replaying the eternal paradox of sadness turning to solace. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars Neither fatal nor glorious.......2007-02-14

Dowland is a composer who can grow wearisome. The LP, with 20 to 25 minutes on a side, was perfect, and I still own a couple from way back then. But his lachrymose songs eventually wear me down, no matter how excellent the performers. One long evening was spent at an all Dowland barrage, in as traditional a performance as scholarship can imagine. I was just bored by the end, despite the excellence of all on stage. This collection is similar, though in different ways. I have taken this CD and mixed it into some vocal compilations, for individually there are tracks that are splendid. "Come Again" is perfect, a blend of old and new that works spectacularly. Indeed, this is not pure old music, but a weird and wonderful updating with a charmingly gloomy reed or two. Other cuts are nearly as good, and for those tracks alone, this is a keeper.

However, on some songs, the sound just grates, and I'm not sure John Potter's voice is strong enough to hold the show alone. Several of these annoy to the point of exasperation. So though I have no inherent objection to a sax and baroque violin pairing off, this is not a perfect CD. Sound is very good (the buzzing mentioned elsewhere does not bother me, nor the rasping of bow on string.) Musicians are excellent, especially the versatile Stephen Stubbs on the not-very-versatile lute. He fills and surrounds and enhances with the gentlest plucks, supporting and amplifying all the others. The six star stuff shines, but for the rest, the material offers too little modulation. Eventually it starts to sound like whining, and the ear (or at least this ear) tunes it out.

4 out of 5 stars Atmosphere and drama reign........2002-07-31

This is a very special disc. The blend of old and new instrumentation is highly successful and might even appeal to some of those who are usually more inclined towards truly authentic approaches.
I am not altogether sure why there are two versions of Flow My Tears included. Both are outstanding interpretations (one mysterious, the other almost menacing), but I would have prefered one version of this, leaving room on the disc for another of Dowland's wonderful songs.
Potter sings beautifully throughout and each instrumentalist is on top form, adding fantastic, surreal tonal colors to the whole.
I could imagine these treatments as dramatic interpretations for a movie on the life of Dowland. Drama and atmosphere are aplenty in these fine performances. Well done to all concerned.

3 out of 5 stars Dowland with saxophone: interesting at first, wears down.......2002-07-28

When in 1992 for the first time I went to London for a conference in pathology, as a Pole I was hoping to learn something (like anecdotes) about John Dowland (or other Brithish Renaissance masters like Thomas Tallis, or William Byrd). Unfortunately, none of the educated Britons I met has heard about these composers. This is the state of music today: people are exposed to droppings from the stages of some [bad] British pop music but know little about Dowland.
This Dowland recording is interesting: vocals are classic but some instruments, like saxophone, are not. I like it.
I am now rewriting this review. After listening to this CD 10 times, this peculiar blending of old(er) and new becomes less fresh, not to say annoying. I am now not sure if I am at all happy with this CD. Dowland in its original does not raise such doubts.

    5 out of 5 stars Dowland Lover.......2001-02-09

I have had a affection for Dowland for a very long time. I loved "In Darkness Let Me Dwell" the minute I heard it and have played it repeatedly. I enjoy the liberties that were taken with this recording... they are surprising, and only enhance the sentiment of the work. I have many recordings of "Come Again",and this one is different than any other. The instrumental bridge, with it richness, is a wonderful contrast to the linear tenor voice. I am usually a purist with most music that I am familiar with... and it is rare that a new recording exceeds with a new take on the expected.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising, delightful mix of the old and the new.......2000-08-15

I bought this on a lark, at the recommendation of Amazon.com's software matchmaker; I didn't know any of the players, but I am familiar with Dowland's work. I popped it in the player along with several other new CDs and went about my business. An hour or so later this disc began to play, and I was stopped in my tracks: there's something so modern and playful about the performances, layered on top of Dowland's familiar sorrowful melodies.

I think the period performance purists will give this one a miss, but anyone with eclectic musical tastes should find plenty to like. Makes me grin every time I put it on, which is quite something for a disc subtitled 'In Darkness Let Me Dwell'.

Paul Agnew is one of the few people whose voice is so beautiful that it's almost irrelevant what he sings! The most lousy song would sound memorable if Agnew sang it. Luckily, however, Dowland's songs are themselves beautiful, matching in calm expressiveness and clarity the calculated perfection of Agnew's vocal style. Don't overlook the other volume from the same series - "Flow my teares."

4 out of 5 stars Huge fan of Ms. von Otter.......2005-10-01

I bought this recording and I really enjoyed it, but it's not my favorite by Ms. von Otter. I still recommend it to everyone. This recital is wonderful, with the exception of "Amanti io vo se dire." It was nice, but a little out of place. I still rate this as a good recital disc.

5 out of 5 stars Great collect of Baroque Melodies .......2005-04-27

This is a great cd,I am a 23 year old music lover I love all kinds of music.I have many cd's and I have to say this is one of My favorite Cd's.All the songs are sung very well.

5 out of 5 stars Joyness and great musicality.......2005-04-22

This artist always knows what she does and why. In this wonderful recording the serious, grave manner is replaced by sheer joyness. This is a record that makes the listener very happy! And the musicality never fails. Strongly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Mellow, but it does have a distraction .......2005-01-01

After receiving this CD a few weeks ago, I have fluctuated between "I like it" and "I don't" back and forth, settling eventually on, I like it - sort of, and can recommend it with the following understandings. First, its technical merit. This is a well produced minimalist approach to Baroque music. The production notes say we should listen to it as we would a recital, and it is well-suited for that atmosphere. The instrumentation is bare bones: harpsichord, chamber organ, theorbo, lute, Baroque guitar. They accompany Ms. von Otter individually in each song and usually never more than one at a time. This is a fine quality recording: clear and even-handed throughout. As for the twenty-one selections, with the exception of Benedetto Ferrari's "Amanti, io vi so dire", the very first song on this otherwise thematic CD, the selections create a mellow mood and maintain that mood throughout. I can't understand how the first cut escaped a final editing, and wondered as I listened to it over and again, what goes through the minds of producers and artists when they review what they have created and don't hear that something is as out of place as this. Nonetheless, I could easily sit with a book and listen to this CD without much distraction, except for the first cut. Anne Sofie von Otter delivers an evenly modulated performance and hints at considerably more power in her voice than she delivers. Her voice has a richness and depth that even when controlled as it was, conveys power. Pull up a seat at King Arthur's Court, sit back, close your eyes and enjoy a fine, minimalist performance in the Baroque tradition that for the most part will not disappoint. PJW

4 out of 5 stars At times, a wonderful experience, at others, a lukewarm one........2004-11-17

I've been a von Otter fan for a number of years now and almost always, blindly purchase her recordings immediately upon release, never having to be either persuaded or dissuaded. I'm rarely, if ever, wholly disappointed. And this is no exception. Von Otter is one of the most intelligent and completely versatile singers on the classical music scene. Her ability to go from Baroque to 20th century works (like her Melisande for Haitink) is admirable and always tasteful. In "Music for a While" she seems, at times, too eager to please, if you will. It's obvious she means to be cheeky, but at times comes across rather annoying and that is not something that she wears well. I don't take anything so seriously that I can't see what the ultimate aim was, but it just seemed somewhat silly and smacking of effort; however, I still think that is a more than worthy recital and one that will provide a great deal of entertainment to both her established fan base and any newcomers. Her Dowland selections are where she really shines, imbuing those lovely pieces with a pathos and quiet dignity that have become her trademark, especially in the early music field, where projects such as "Lamenti" and "Coronation of Poppea" with Gardiner (her "Addio Roma" is nothing short of spectacular) being especially memorable. The lute/theorbo solo pieces are recorded at too low a level, making one having to strain to get the full effect. Yes, the voice doesn't have the bloom it once did, but it's still a gorgeous instrument. I think that those, like myself, who believe in Ms. von Otter's innate artistry and musicality will not be disappointed, so go ahead and purchase it; believe me, you won't be that upset over the few excesses that you'll ultimately be sorry.

        4 out of 5 stars You don't need a Wayback machine.......2001-12-05

Just get a CD like this one to get a broad brush review of the popular hits of the late 1500s. While I would have liked a few more recorder pieces, almost every cut was interesting in its own way. If you want just one early music CD with English songs, this is probably the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Compilation of Elizabethan Music.......2001-09-27

"Elizabeth's Music" is a great cd to listen to if you are an enthusiast of ballads, the lute or old fashioned jigs. This cd really puts you in the alehouses, courts and courtyards of the Elizebethan age. The music is preformed well and the voices are very authentic and beautiful. The CD loses one star because most of the songs are on other Dorian-released CDs! I got the cd and found out most of the songs were the exact same ones on my "Shakespeare's Music" CD and other Dorian CDs. Ah well. All Elizabethan enthusiasts will enjoy this eclectic collection.

4 out of 5 stars Light classics with historical charm.......2000-01-07

Really enjoyed this CD. Light and pleasant, without being too pretentious. Great background music for home or office.

Although Henry Purcell usually is cited as the greatest master of English text-setting, such judgments ignore the genius of John Dowland, whose music not only is totally accordant with its texts, but whose melodies are invariably memorable and eminently singable. This recording offers a variety of vocal works, most for mixed voices, accompanied by Anthony Rooley's well-tuned and tastefully realized lute figures. Of the program's 18 songs, 11 are by Dowland; the rest are by several contemporaries--Morley, Tomkins, and Weelkes--who both encouraged and were influenced by Dowland's unique musical persona, a remarkable combination of "distraught melancholy" and flawless melodic and harmonic instincts. Familiar and beloved tunes are here, including "Come again!" and "Sleep wayward thoughts." But just as compelling are Tomkins's "Weep no more, thou sorry boy" and Claudin de Sermisy's "Las, je m'y plains." The four voices--some of England's finest early-music singers--are so distinct that rather than a carefully blended ensemble, we hear each individual voice clearly defined. It's an interesting effect that works well and adds immeasurably to the color and mood of the music. --David Vernier

four voices: evelyn tubb - soprano, lucy ballard - alto, andrew king - tenor, and simon grant - bass. for those of you who think that the human voice is about as pretty a musical instrument that's ever been invented, this is a disc for you. divine stuff. director, anthony rooley adds some nice lute, too. don't miss it.
