Tracy's best.......2007-07-12
This is by far my favorite release from Tracy Chapman. You should not hesitate to add this to your collection if you are a fan.
Another Great Recording.......2005-05-20
Enter Tracy's world of love, forgiveness and peace. Wonderfully crafted songs, which make one hopeful for a better world in the future for our children. She is truly one of the "kind hearts" amidst today's super hectic music business. She is a light in a dark world. She is a singer with a beautiful soul.
love that Tracy.......2005-05-05
Tracy - you go girl! love her! I have all of her CDs, 5 I think, and a couple singles. she is Great! bluesy and reminiscent of Nina Simone, perfect for doing housework to. my dear hubby, Norman, puts on a Tracy CD to get me in the mood - for housecleaning. oh, we've made love to Tracy too, plenty of times, but for doing dishes and folding laundry, she's a must. buy this one for Bang Bang Bang & Matters of the Heart. then buy all her other ones, you'll like them all.
THE CHAPMAN CD TO HAVE.......2002-01-12
If you are a Chapman fan, take the time to get and listen to this maserpiece that unfortunately did not get the acclaim it deserved. The work on this CD is touching and will give you the same critically social meanings that we have come to know and love in Tracy's work. Get this for your collection.
One of her best.......2001-12-22
Tracy Chapman is whitout doubt one of ours best songwriter and singer. The first time I played Tracy Chapman in my class, they all thought she was a man, because of her deep vocal but they liked her really much. This album takes you on a journey, to your soul you'll be touch by Bang bang bang, being cying over So, and being moved by I Used to be a sailor. While this album wasn't a big hit I was deep chocked over the way the media purchased this album. I still think this is one of her best albums to date.

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful, Relaxing Project.......2007-06-15
My only other experience with Charlotte Church was seeing part of a PBS special on her, where she sang songs like "Some Enchanted Evening". I actually enjoy her voice on this style of music.
I love her rendition of "Amazing Grace". She also did good on covering "Bridge Over Troubled Water", though I was disappointed she didn't try the high note on the verses as Garfunkel did. My favorite on the project was "It's the Heart That Matters Most".
If I want some beautiful sounding music to relax to while I'm working, this would be a very good project for that.
It just cannot be the end for Charlotte's classical career! :(.......2006-08-20
I'm just shocked that Charlotte has decided to end her classical career with this mediocre assortment of her most loved pieces from her other albums! I wish that she had re-sung all of the pieces to make them sound better than ever with her mature voice! To me, it seems disgusting that anyone would want to end their career with a last album that sounds the way this album does!
Her beginning pieces (Pie Jesu, My Lagan Love, In Trutina, Panis Angelicus, and Amazing Grace) were sung at the beginning of her classical career, and you can hear her flat vowels and shaky low notes. You can also hear it in "She Moved Thru the Fair". It's really annoying!
La Pastorella is a beautiful song to sing, and Church masters it beautifully! Just Wave Hello - the Ford Anthem, is also a beautiful piece, with amazing work from the orchestra.
Ave Maria is a complete annoyance! Church lays on the high notes too much, putting too much emphasis on them, and it's an annoyance! Her vowels are also flat on the high notes - I just hate it!
Dream a Dream is a very nice piece, leaning more towards the pop scene. Church still seems to make it work, and I would listen to it all day!
The Flower Duet is a beautiful song, but Church's vocals are strained, which makes it hard to listen to with a smile on your face! It's still beautiful!
The Prayer (w/ Josh Groban) is a very nice piece, originally sung by Celine Dion. She's still a little bit flat here!
All That Love can Be is sung beautifully, completely smooth and connected. The vocals are flawless and have a mezmerizing effect.
It's the Heart that Knows is a pop piece that Church sings with strong vocals. It's just showing us that she's ending her career as a classical superstar!
Tantum Ergo, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Sancta Maria, are all beautiful pieces!
I am a Charlotte Chruch fan, no doubt, but I really didn't like this album! I still wish that she would stay with opera, but I guess dreams don't come true! I wouldn't advise you to buy this CD - but as long as you have Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church (the Self Titled Album) and Enchantment, there's no need for this CD!
Sorry Charlotte!
Charlotte Church.......2006-07-29
Love that voice!! This is a great CD and any one who had not heard this young lady sing should buy it and prepare for some musical enjoyment.
Somewhat decent but still mediocre.......2006-06-07
I am well aware of Charlotte's age. However, I am also aware of her amazing vocals and powerful range. But these things don't make you a good singer. Charlotte chose to stick to opera in most of her songs. And face it, not just anyone can do opera.
Charlotte's voice is very well trained - maybe too trained. From a very young age she's been hitting the same notes as Sarah Brightman. But I feel that Charlotte's over-worked and not to mention overdone voice has been declining tremendously.
But I guess none of this really matters now because I haven't heard her do anything classical for a while. If you want to listen to Charlotte now, go find the song 'Crazy Chick.'
If you want to listen to other angel voiced sopranos, I'd go with Sarah Brightman or Renee' Fleming.
R&B For Charlotte .......2006-05-07
If a bird can be annoying as in a Rooster Crowing in the morning, some people will like it. A dog can bark in the nights we sleep, some People will like it. A human voice so light, so vibrated within their own dimensions, people will like it, but not I. I never really saw the beauty of opera, agitating to the ears, just like a Rooster calling on it's hens. With that said, Charlotte needs to turn to Blues Rock or R&B. Yes, Boogie style Blues Rock, she has the voice for it. No matter how many here perceive Opera or know what should sound good, no opera singer could ever sing Blues without a voice and a heart for it. Not One! So why should a girl with soulful music embedded in her, do the same? I say, "it's time to really Rock Charlotte!"

Patti LuPone is surprisingly intimate in Matters of the Heart, her first solo album since 1995, considering her career of playing larger-than-life leading ladies (Eva Peron, Reno Sweeney, Norma Desmond). In this studio recording of her 1999 cabaret show, the topic is love and relationships, and LuPone travels from wide-eyed ("The Boy Next Door") to worldly wise ("Hello, Young Lovers"). It's not all chestnuts, however, as the program covers a wide range of gems by such composers as Jimmy Webb, Stephen Sondheim, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Frank Wildhorn, Randy Newman, and Stephen Flaherty, and the songs of upcoming cabaret composer John Bucchino in particular will have you reaching for the repeat button. Also noteworthy are the inventive and tasteful arrangements by pianist Dick Gallagher, as they transform the usual lilt of "A Wonderful Guy" into an art song and make time stand still on the Hollies' "Air That I Breathe." Accompanied by Gallagher and an occasional string quartet, LuPone is a storyteller here, not a Broadway diva. Matters of the Heart represents a self-transformation by a major artist, with most delectable results. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
lovely record.......2005-08-22
Patti LuPone is wonderful as always. Her selection of material is wonderful too. Her voice is addictive.
PATTI LuPONE'S LOVE STORYBOOK .......2005-08-06
The name of Patti LuPone is hardly unbeknown to the musical theatre aficionados all over the world. For the last 25 years she has been one of the ultimate divas in the genre, memorable both to the American and London audiences and cast recordings collectors as the big, passionate and brassy voice of Evita, Norma Desmond, Fantine, Reno Sweeney or Mrs. Lovett.
Yet this 1999 studio recording of her solo concert performance entitled "Matters of the heart" is a bit different from those larger-than-life tunes and characters we've usually associated with Ms. LuPone. This recording is actually one big, gentle story about love. The whole idea was to give the listener an insight into all sorts of different emotions that reside under the word `love' through the carefully selected set of love songs. Accordingly, this songs on this CD show love in all its variety: young, pure and idealistic ("The boy next door, It's for you"); hopeless ("The air that I breathe"; "Sand and water") eternal ("Not a day goes by"); scheming ("Shattered illusions"), obsessive ("Back to before") and even parental and child love ("My father/Look mummy, no hands"; My son").
The orchestra here is appropriately small, consisting of a string quartet and a piano, thus allowing Ms. LuPone's vocals to be in the centre of the story. The thing that will most certainly surprise those already accustomed to Patti's voice is how sweet, gentle and quiet does it sound in some of the tracks. That doesn't mean that this CD lacks her full-lunged and overpowering renditions: Sondheim's Not a day goes by and Rodgers and Hammerstein's A cock-eyed optimist are the best examples. My own personal favorites lay in the gentler tunes, such as Air that I breathe, probably one of the best here; It's for you, a rather obscure Lennon & McCarthy song done here only in half, Sand and water and Real emotional girl.
It is quite obvious that with this concert recorded as CD in a studio, Ms. LuPone wanted to show her versatile ability of an artist who is able to transform himself in a best possible way, that is, from larger-than life heroines of the stage to a tender and quiet love storyteller. A very successful transformation indeed!
In the end, this is one of those CDs that will be in your CD player quite often. The warmness in Patti LuPone's voice, the charms of the orchestrations and, of course, the fact that it involves the most noble of all human emotions as its subject matter, are more than enough to ensure this. Brava!
How she sings live is show she sings in the studio - awesome.......2004-01-04
This gifted theatre singer originated Evita and Norma Desmond onstage, and its easy to see why she can tackle the characters with big voices and vocally showy songs. Its quite a change to hear a studio album from LuPone after her previous live albums (Live at Carnegie Hall and Heatwave: Sings Irving Berlin at the Hollywood Bowl). The good news is, she sings just as good in studio as when she sings live -- a true mark of an authentic singer. And although she sang songs from Randy Newman, Lennon & McCartney and other contemporary songwriters notably the cabaret songwriter du jour John Bucchino, her debt to theatre is still evident, like "Not a Day Goes By" which still sounds affecting after numerous recordings of that song. Her take of the raucous "I Never Do Anything Twice" exploited her comedic skills at employing sudden stops, trill-like explorations and still not sound breathless. This is an album that can be played like a pop record at home because of the combination of delicacy, intelligence, choice of material and just plain good ole singing merits.
Great vocals and a touching story.......2002-02-21
Those of you who think you're familiar with Ms. LuPone's work will undoubtedly be surprised by "Matters of the Heart", her latest solo offering. Not only does she provide intelligent interpretations of each lyric on the 20-song set, the songs themselves tell a story of love. Whether coming to terms with loneliness ("Sand and Water") or delicately affirming youthful passion ("Hello, Young Lovers"), Patti's first-rate vocals soar. Of course, those of us familiar with Ms. Lupone's belting broadway diva persona will feel right at home with her powerful renditions of "Not A Day Goes By" and "Back to Before". There are also a few selections from lesser-known composers that stand out, such as "Unexpressed" and "Playbill". Don't hesitate purchasing this CD...it will be a classic!
Patti LuPone - just brilliant.......2001-12-07
You never heard of Patti LuPone before? Shame on you. She's such a talented singer and actress, I can only say you're missting out on something. If you want to get to know her, buy this CD. It contains wonderful material that suits Ms. LuPones voice perfectly. You have never heard anyone sing "air that i breathe" like Patti sings it. Truly this is the best version I ever heard!! Plus listen to "Real emotional girl" a wonderful song that was later used in "Ally McBeal". And if that hasn't get you noisy then just wait till you hear her sing: "Unexpressed". I just say one word: Goosebumps!!
Okay, now you have enough reasons to buy this record. Go for it, now!!!

AWESOME!!!!!!!.......2006-04-19
This is a CD that will last the test of time. I bought this years ago and someone took it!!! I am now listening to it again, and it makes my spirit leap with joy. I truly LOVE this CD. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!!
Great album.......2002-03-09
This is one of my most favorite Commissioned albums ever. Reason being is because Fred and Marvin are great singers and this was the last project they had together before their solo careers really took flight. I love this album, "Dare to Believe" is a classic. "I'm Learning" is one of my all-time favorites. "Love Is The Way" and "Come Home" are two blazing, bumping tracks that will get you bobbing your head. Then the album goes urban praise and worship on the last few tracks which is uplifting and spiritual. "Draw Me Nearer" is, vocally, Commissioned at its best. Another one to add to the collection.
An Uplifting Album.......2001-10-12
Another one of Commissioned's masterpieces. My husband and I love this CD, and are usually fighting over who gets to listen to it. My husband's favorite song is "I'm Learning". One of my favorite songs (and I have a whole lot of them) is "We Shall Behold Him". Of Course it talks about the Rapture, and meeting the Saviour in the air. I am anticipating for His return! Just to see Him face to face would be so awesome!!
The best!!.......2001-03-30
MY favorite of all the Commissioned albums. And I'm a Commissioned buff. Great songs, great lyrics. Get the video too. The whole experience is amazing. Blessed!!
Soothing balm for the troubled spirit.......2001-03-08
I listen to this album almost everyday. Whenever i am sad i listen to it because the lyrics speak directly to my heart. Try 'Dare to believe', it says suddenly you realize, all that you've lived for is gone...(there is hope where you are if only you'd realize)" how often have you felt that way? Or 'Find myself in you?' These songs ALWAYS give me hope and fill me with cheer. If you buy this album, you truely won't regret it. While you're there, try thier others, 'Irreplaceable Love' and their latest one too!!

Classic Grace.......2003-01-30
Bravo! This CD, is such a great compilation of all Charl's albums. It's sort of sad though that this was a Prelude, to a different type of music.
However I think Charlotte is just so talented and she is getting better in every album I hear her. Bravo!
Great CD and DVD!.......2003-01-08
This is my first Charlotte cd and dvd. I wasn't really into this type of music but I work at a retail store and when I saw her cd fly of the shelf, I wanted to know what the fuss is all about so I bought this cd...and I'm glad I did. I also liked the dvd included. I was awed.
too pretty too bad.......2002-12-27
This album is appropriately dubbed as greatest hits. Appropriately because, judging by how much the voice has deteriorated over the last 4 years, it's unlikely that we'll see more of Charlotte Church's albums. What's needed now is a skilled vocal coach who might (!) be able to restore Church's originally pretty soubrette soprano back to the way it sounded when "A voice of an angel" was recorded. Big labels, shame on you. A talent needs to be nurtured and brought up SLOWLY, so that it could first develop into something. By shamelessly exploiting Charlotte's adorable looks and youth, Sony executives have ruined a promising career before she could even develop into a real opera singer.
Charlotte, if you're reading this, STOP singing now and look for a good teacher. Or just be content as one of richest children in the world.
This CD is SO good! A must for Charlotte Church fans!.......2002-12-20
This CD is filled with her best songs from all of her albums, including new ones. My favorite new ones are "It's The Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." They are all really good! It is the best! Go Charlotte!
AWESOME!!.......2002-12-06
I can't get enough of this CD and DVD! It absolutely ROCKS!! This gal is so talented. A must-have selection!

Sweet little soul keeper this one.......2005-10-20
The opener In this little Town is like a cute little short story, with a heart to it. It will stay in your head nearly forever, because it has some universal human elements. A narrative structure in story telling that realy hit`s you in the
heart. Restless Heart in a way, as we all some times feels.
The other tracks is variable, but worth listen to anyway. It`s a form for light country rock, which really kicks in gear sometimes like Love Train. There are ballads that Mind of Matters of the heart which really tell universial stories about love and relationships that give every one hope for a better world for all of us. Track 8 Hometown Boy has quality written all over it in the same quality as In this little town has.
Restless Heart gives you feed for your soul and your heart all in all. To sum it up with a tempo up beat song Id``cross the line, really gives you something for every taste.
An overlooked gem............2005-08-11
This CD came out in 1994 and included only three of the original members: John Dittrich, Paul Gregg and Greg Jennings. Due to lack of support or radio play, this album flopped. This is an excellent CD. If you are a Restless Heart fan, this is a must. Matters Of The Heart contains all the elements that make a great Restless Heart CD. You'll have the opening track, "In This Little Town" instantly stuck in your head for days. "Love Train" sounds like something that would have come from the "Wheels" album. Track 3 is a genuine Restless Heart ballad. The piano hook alone will stick in your head. The rest of the album is solid. It's amazing that this didn't become a major hit. Once again, probably due to lack of promotion. This is a steal for the price listed. Even if you're not a Restless Heart fan, but are a country/pop fan, buy this immediately. After a few listens, it'll stay in your CD player for a long time. The only downside is that the CD is barely over 30 minutes long....but sometimes shorter is sweeter.

Vienna Idol.......2007-02-07
Two Questions: Was this the audition tape for "Vienna Idol?" and What would Simon Cowell's say?
How sad.......2006-04-16
A terrible try to match Libera. Someone said it right: how dare those people use such marvellous voices to create such ugly
thing? Let Libera deal with amazing new age music, let Vienna Boys Choir continue being masters of their domains: classical music.
Not their style.......2006-03-31
I was expecting something a lot better. One can't fault the choir for the recording. The fault lies with the director, arranger, and producer. The instrumental accompaniment over shadowed the boys singing. The arrangements of each song was too similar, and the boys sounded too restrained for this style. Pop is not the musical style of the Vienna Boys Choir. They need to stick what they do best - classical and sacred music.
Perhaps The Greatest Gag Gift Ever!.......2005-12-07
The greatest thing about this CD is that it wasn't meant to be funny! Upon listening to "Burning Down The House", I was seized with a fit of hysterical laughter that nearly broke a rib. And the laughs keep coming. Need a smooth tune for that special gal, try "Fantasy", she will be yours! Need a good jogging tune, "Get Down" should serve your purpose. A CD that will offer hours of entertainment. Guaranteed.
wow - THAT was something!.......2005-10-31
I got this as a gift because my friend saw a holiday cd with Vienna Boys Choir at my house. My advice:listen to the music previews before you buy the cd. It's too freaky for me. Good Luck.

Great for romantic dinner with hubby!.......2005-08-09
I love great songs turned into classic music. it is wonderful to be able to play some of my favorite songs, during a romantic dinner. It would have been great at my wedding to play during dinner :D

It's alright, good for relaxing.......2004-08-26
The only reason I didn't put five stars is because it didn't include "When the Lights Go Down". Otherwise, it's alright

An Instant Classic.......2007-01-15
Kathy Kallick is one of the most refreshing singer-songwriters to appear in country / folk in a long time. Unlike many releases that tout the talents of some singer-songwriters, she actually had a hand in writing every track on this wonderful album, and just about every song is a winner.
Like many other supremely talented performers, she is woefully unknown, but with so many able and respected names (like Laurie Lewis and Tim O'Brien) supporting her on this effort, it's a cinch she can't stay that way forever. And if she does, she will still be among good company, considering the impressive list of fine but offbeat musicians she has assembled to support her here.
Speaking of Tim O'Brien, their duet, Bakery Window Wedding, is one of the standouts, although it's difficult to pick the strongest contender on an album that contains so many winners. If I had to pick one track above the others, I guess it would be the gorgeous ballad, See You In Seattle, with lyrics I couldn't get out of my head the very first time I heard it, and a duet / harmony vocal by Ed Johnson that is an absolutely stunning example of simplicity and beauty in songwriting.
Another duet with Ed Johnson, North Star, also boasts a pretty melody and pleasing lyrics that will bring a smile to your face, even if you've never been in love, as does the heartbreaking Save Everything (with fiddle and harmony vocal by Laurie Lewis), It Just Takes Time and the closing track, Wish Me Well. Oh, and the title track, Matters of the Heart, is not only descriptive of the albums contents, it's a great song.
And while I have a weakness for ballads, she does fine on the upbeat numbers as well, with Radio and Man in the Moon just two examples that prove that heartfelt lyrics don't have to be confined to lazy-paced tearjerkers.
Although I acquired this wonderful gem over ten years ago (not too long after its release), I keep coming back to it again and again. It never fails to lift my spirits, or put me in an introspective mood.
If you're not familiar with her, take a chance - I can almost guarantee you won't be disappointed.
One of the country's best songwriters.......2000-01-10
Kathy Kallick is a major talent and she deserves far more attention than she gets. The songs on this recording are so fine - from 'See you in Seattle' to 'I Wish you Well', her work is meaningful, well-written and has originality and feeling. Without being maudlin, Kallick writes as if she's read your diary and expresses wonderful feelings. There is not a bad cut on this recording - the 'Quake of 89' is great, as is 'Radio'. 'Save Everything' is beautiful - about life and love and loss and memory. I'm a long-time fan of Kathy's, in whatever group she's been in, and wish everyone knew this recording and played it as often as I do.
