5 out of 5 stars A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09

My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.

This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!

The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.

3 out of 5 stars Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05

Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.

TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.

Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").

While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.

Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).

Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.

Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.

Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.

Those having witnessed Frank Black exorcising his demons through screams and wails onstage with the Pixies will stop for a double-take when they hear this, an album the frontman recorded live in Nashville just days before the band launched its 2004 reunion tour. He sounds like George Jones with a hangover. Stripping away the ear-splitting feedback and lyrics about spaceships, Black teams up with a group of dust-caked local musicians, whose collective resumes include stints at Stax Records, Muscle Shoals and American Studios, for a set of songs that are beautiful and warm--even when on "Another Velvet Nightmare," he mournfully sings, "Today I felt my heart slide in my belly/ So I puked it up with liquor." --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective.......2007-03-02

I've never listened to the Pixies or Frank Black before stumbling across this album. I think it's great.

Die-hards will probably be upset when I say this, but it sounds like a better version of Jack Johnson mixed with some blues and Bob Dylan. It's a great-sounding and relaxed album with very good quality guitar work throughout. The songs are mellow, but not in a boring way. The highlight for me is the very intricate guitar pieces in between lyrics and the blues-y solos.

This is palatable folk-rock at its finest. I've had a hard time finding anyone who is a music fan that doesn't like the sound of this cd. I'd recommend it to anybody. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that it seems repetitive at times, and I seem to enjoy the first half of the album more than the second half. Plenty of great tunes on here though. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A Lone Pixie Is Never Lonely .......2006-03-22

In 2003 Charles Kitteridge Thompson IV's Show Me Your Tears album was a terrific little release, beflecked with country odes to marital woes and some of the best songs of the artist's career. That it was so overlooked stems less from the fact that it was dud album and more due to Thompson's background in one of the most revered alternative acts of all time, The Pixies. Following the demise of said band in the early 1990s, Charles `Frank Black' Thompson's subsequent decade as a solo artist was consistently measured against his years in The Pixies, with interviews never failing to question the possible return of the indomitable quartet.
Last year Pixies fans finally saw the band return to the live arena with US and European dates, however the reunion hasn't dampened Frank Black's enthusiasm for releasing his own material. More MOR rock than the country flavours of Show Me Your Tears, Honeycomb finds Black encroaching on the territory of everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Chris Rea. If Show Me Your Tears was his break-up album, Honeycomb finds Black still rueing over the fallout, with the rambling, drunken keyboards of Another Velvet Nightmare backing up a lyrics dealing with thoughts of the ex copping off with another man.
As with previous Black solo material, minimal production on most of these songs reveals the singer's clean yet subdued vocals backed by an often sprightly guitar. While tunes such as Dark End Of The Street sound like a meld of early 1970s Neil Young and Van Morrison (even the title is redolent of such a link), there's still a taste of Black's quirky lyric on Song Of The Shrimp, where talking crustaceans take the spotlight for the cover of the track once recorded by Elvis Presley. Although Honeycomb finds Frank earning a helping hand from Booker T & The MG's guitarist Steve Cropper, it is Black's wife Jean who helps out on vocals for Honeycomb's finest track, Strange Goodbye.
Settle down Pixies fans, you're getting a new album next year from the acclaimed quartet. For now, this DIY production from Frank is a perfect stop-gap that offers far more interest than the dull brown album cover would have you believe.

4 out of 5 stars Lull me, Frank. You da man!.......2006-02-08

Like pretty much all other output from this man, Honeycomb is heartfelt and true. It does readers a tremendous disservice to ever refer to his music as "country." That notion is plain ridiculous. Just as he mastered -- along with the rest of the Pixies -- the art of uniquely conveying youthful angst, he has come to master the folky twang of plucking on heart strings... and once given a chance, you simply have no choice but to believe his every verse and musing. That said, I must admit that, for me, Honeycomb simply fits in the middle there, somewhere among the rest of his folkier solo work. For my money, it doesn't get any better than Teenager Of The Year. Still, Honeycomb is a wonderful album, even blowing away lesser works like "The Cult Of Ray." I just wish he would leave cutesy li'l ditties like "Song Of The Shrimp" off his albums. They don't help to garner respect from the fickle listener.

4 out of 5 stars "John Wesley Harding" meets "The Circle Game" .......2006-02-03

This thing surprised the hell out of me. I loved the Pixies but had not enjoyed Black's solo output nearly as much. This sounds nothing like the Pixies, but it's awesome. It comes across like, of all things, a cross between Dylan's "John Wesley Harding" and Tom Rush's "The Circle Game." The songs are full of humor and bile and wacky (but, for Black, typical) imagery. Black sings in a deep, soulful voice atop one of the greatest bands ever recorded. It's soulful and folksy and a little punky and country, but entirely successful. It's rare that a CD stays in my CD player more than a day. This thing's been there for two weeks now.

3 out of 5 stars the verdict is still out on this one.......2006-01-30

Honeycomb is a tough album for me to write about because i have not made up my mind on whether or not i like it. overall, it's a fine record, full of generally well-written songs that stradle an acoustic sound with Frank's oddball lyrics and unusual meter. but for every track that is a winner ("I Burn Today", "My Life In Storage") there are plenty of other songs that are merely "okay." not that bad...but not that good. a general feeling of a lazy, sunbaked afternoon is heavy on these recordings and that is really nice, but it can't help cover up some of the lackluster tunes. i'm still listening to it and trying to soak it in and hoping that it will grow on me a bit more. because i want to enjoy it more than i do right now. hmmm....unfortunately, there's really no hope in getting past the lifeless graphic design job that this compact disc comes encased in. somebody find Mister Black proper artist, please!

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Must Have .......2005-12-29

Cabin in the Sky is an excellent, excellent black film. Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly remastered classic.......2001-09-18

I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing.

5 out of 5 stars Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13

CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK.......1999-07-31

Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues, who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack.

Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. Makes you wonder why more musicals were not made with these great artists.Reccommend also all of Miss Waters recordings reissued on the Classics Label from 1921-1940. This cd is a must for anyone interested in jazz or blues.
