    2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

    3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. This album every bit as accomplished as the book. --Andrew Bartlett

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-02-14

I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02

With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18

Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10

I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.

      1 out of 5 stars Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11

I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

That Daddy-O Daddy! is an exceptional record worthy of listeners who span the generational spectrum ought to come as no ground-shaker. Forget, for a moment, that this is a Woody Guthrie tribute--a designation signaling that whatever's to come, it'll be electric-blanket cozy--and focus instead on the talent that producer Frankie Fuchs pulled together here. There's the glorious rough stuff of Taj Mahal; Billy Bragg & the Blokes' robust riptide; Cissy Houston's graceful vocal sway; and the back-porch warble of Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among others. It's a meandering but easy-to-follow recipe of master interpreters, in other words, and one that's not afraid to intermingle ingredients. Add to that the tingly thrill of being on the receiving end of raw material mined from folk music's dear, departed pop (six unreleased, unrecorded, and in some cases unfinished tracks poke up), and you can't help feeling a little awed. Cue this up for kids as young as 2, as the whirly-twirl of tracks like "Tippy-Tap Toe" and "Little Sack o' Sugar" will set them to swooping, swaying, and singing the way Woody would've wanted. Houston's "Sleep Eye" and Bragg's "Dry Bed" soar--one's as warm as the other is high-spirited. These 16 tracks, though, are to be savored for the simple joy with which their creator so deftly dashed them off. "Howdy Little Newlycome," Guthrie's own recitation of a wonderment-filled ditty he recorded in his kitchen in 1951, caps off a perfectly executed disc that pours its heart out in the name of a plainspoken genius. --Tammy La Gorce

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars just wonderful.......2002-05-07

It really is as good as the other reviewers say. I got this for the Jimmie Dale Gilmore tune, but I burst out crying with the Syd Straw number. There's a range of styles and emotions, but all of them top-notch.

      5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2002-01-09

A wonderful CD to introduce to children of all ages!!

5 out of 5 stars A treasure for the whole family!.......2002-01-05

I bought this CD for myself, having heard one of the songs on the radio. I now plan on sending one to each of my three grandchildren. These songs are not only fun, they speak to children and adults alike. It is quite apparent that Woody Guthrie wrote these songs with lots of love, and an understanding of his children's feelings and fears. Taj Mahal and the other artists that perform the songs do a great job. I definitely recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for all Guthrie fans.......2001-12-16

Daddy-O Daddy! is an impressive and entertaining collection of fifteen recordings for young listeners composed by the folk music legend Woody Guthrie and performed by a series of outstanding artists. A "must" for all Guthrie fans, as well as highly recommended for children and their families the selection range from Wood Guthrie's performance of Howdy Little Newlycome (2:38), to Kim Wilson's performance of New Baby Train (6:03); to Cissy Houston's Sleep Eye (5:40).

5 out of 5 stars an amazing collection of songs.......2001-12-07

Whether you've got a "little newlycome" at home or not, say howdy to this collection of artists performing rare Woody Guthrie songs. My favorites:
"Want to See Me Grow?" -- Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore
"My Daddy (Flies a Ship in the Sky)" -- Syd Straw -- this song should be the national anthem for airplane travel!
"Dry Bed" -- Billy Bragg. Too much! A trippy song about potty training.

Get this for all the kids you know.

      4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16

I actually haven't taken this CD out of the player since I got it. In my humble opinion. Hyperion is the classiest label going; in fact, I'll buy Hyperion CDs even without being familiar with the singers, because I trust the producers. I saw this CD classified in the folk section at the library--but I knew better. Marie McLaughlin is a real singer, not a folk singer, and she does justice to these beautiful songs. I'd rather hear a classically trained singer sing folk songs than a folk singer sing anything.

      3 out of 5 stars a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21

I do not wish to be too harsh on this album...there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. My main quibble is with the title: "Songs of Scotland." These songs may well be "from" Scotland...but they are not "of Scotland."

The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.

Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.

My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.

This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

      5 out of 5 stars Soaring!!.......2007-01-11

This CD is probably one of the best additions to my classical collection. There are many great opeatic artists both past and present, but after listening to these renditions bu Ying Huang, I can honestly say that she will be rated amongst the greatest!!
This CD is a well worth purchase for those who enjoy classical music in particular, Opera.

5 out of 5 stars O! Mio Babbino Caro made me weep.......2006-03-10

I'm saddened by the nitpicky nature of some of the opera "critics" who've chimed in on this CD. Like many things artistic, it is easy to criticize, especially on technical details. As a professional musician (pop, not classical) I have worked hard to hear the essence and emotion of a performance, and not to get bogged down in trying to make myself feel superior.

Case in point: I first heard "O! Mio Babbino Caro" on my infant daughter's show, Classical Baby on HBO. The visual is an animated cow singing to a bull-shaped constellation. Despite the triviality of the image, I found myself weeping every time the segment came on. I don't care for opera much (I prefer instrumental classical music by far) but there was something about that voice and that performance that touched me. I did some online research and finally found this wonderful track. I listened to Callas, Fleming, Brightman, and many others while searching and found them all lacking (no disrespect intended). Maybe it's Huang's youth that captures the subject matter so profoundly (I read the translation, and wept again at the emotional content). Maybe that's just a really compelling cartoon cow, but if a piece of music in a foreign language in an unfamiliar genre can touch my heart like this does, I'm a believer.

Don't give in to the negativity and snobbishness of some of the other reviews. Listen as a child does, without prejudice and with no axe to grind.

      5 out of 5 stars Bel canto!.......2003-11-10

After her impressive rendition of Cio-Cio-San in Frédéric Mitterrand's filmed opera `Madame Butterfly' (1995), Ying Huang released her first solo opera album, with James Conlon conducting the wonderful London Symphony Orchestra. Huang's voice of exquisite sound and sweet timbre, along with her well refined crafting, brought me special joys throughout the listening. For a young voice like Huang's, this album is a selection with quite some range that displays her excellent bel canto and ineffably beautiful lyricism. Besides the superb quality of her voice, her singing is with unique grace, in the dramatic lines as well as in the coloraturas. Introduced by Huang are also two Chinese songs, "A Little Path", which is a folk song, and "I Live at the Source of the Yangtze River", which is an old song with lyric from an ancient Chinese verse.

Listening to such singing is a heavenly feeling. Huang's soprano might be a small instrument, but it is very flexible and exquisite, and she will do very well in recital. I will be very much looking forward to hearing more from her.

      4 out of 5 stars Pleasant recital.......2003-07-01

Ying Huang has a pleasant, silvery voice and a good coloratura technique. She is fairly young on this recital, I believe only 26. She shows signs of becoming a real musician and artist. I found her coloratura to be pleasant, but not spectacular in the Sutherland and Sills mode. Her biggest advantage is her pure, silvery voice. She has nice Italian diction, but it needs to be projected more. I found her "La Sonnambula" aria to be nicely sung, definitely better than Renée Fleming's overdone version on her overrated "Bel Canto" disc. The ornaments Huang uses are the traditional ones and she tosses them off fairly easily. Her trill definitely needs work. I found her to be at her best in the comic arias, especially the "Un Ballo" aria and the "Don Pasquale" aria. "Una voce poco fa" contains nice coloratura. As for her high notes, they are soft and pure. They do need to be a bit more secure, but at least she hits them. Her staccati need a bit more work in "Caro nome". The last part of this aria is cut. This is the part that includes Gilda's final trill and the diminuendo with which she leaves the stage. I found the Puccini selections sung well, but she needs to add more drama to them. In fact, she needs to work more on characterization overall. She is young, so she will probably improve with time. I found the Mandarin-language selections delightful. This disc can be enjoyed for Huang's pleasant voice, developing musicality, and fairly good coloratura.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Natural Voice, Needs more training........2003-04-07

A couple yeras ago, before she was famous, one of her vocal teacher criticized that her voice needed more training. Unforturnately, I didn't see the difference between then and now. Most of time, the natural beauty in her voice covered up her technical shortage, but she reached high notes, the inperfection is obvious.

In spite of all, she is still a wonderful soprano.

It's hard to even begin hanging musical descriptors on the late Bill Crofut. He came up during the folk boom of the 1950s and even then quietly defied tradition by setting the words of American poets such as Robert Penn Warren to banjo-inflected music, something he continued doing throughout his career with a variety of wordsmiths. Dance on a Moonbeam is his final treasure, a gift of sorts to children and their parents, delivered after Crofut's death in January 1999. Steeped in Shakespeare's words and a magical ability to weave together Renaissance-era moods and American folk music, Moonbeam exudes a warmth and soulfulness that Crofut and musical partner Chris Brubeck create with the simplest instrumentations--banjo, bass, piano, cello, and voices, mostly. Meryl Streep interjects brief readings of Shakespeare, a lovely complement to an incredible mix of Crofut's rustic folk with classically trained singers such as Dawn Upshaw, Julianne Baird, and Frederica von Stade. "Dandling Songs," "The Bear," "Simple Gifts," and "All Through the Night" alone among these 26 stellar cuts make this one of the best children's music recordings in ages. It eschews the simple means to a child's ear and instead aims for the heart and soul, which Moonbeam reaches over and over with wit and creative depths that will unfold for ages. --Andrew Bartlett

2 out of 5 stars NOT classic Bill Crofut.......2002-12-23

If you really love folk music, you'll love Bill Crofut; but not this album! I grew up listening to Bill Crofut (my parents' old record is all scratched up from me dancing around in front of the record player to the Chipmunk's Day). I love his voice, I love his poetry, I love the way he plays the banjo. I was so excited to see this album now that I have a child myself. But from the moment I turned it on, I loathed it. It's too operatic (I like Opera, but not when I want to listen to folk music), and it makes the very real and down-to-earth songs sound high-faluten and just plin bad. If your're looking for some great music for your kids (even very young ones), get some Bill Crofut music...but get it with Bill singing, not these non-folk singers.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative mix of folk, classical, poetry.......2002-10-16

I love what these performers have done mixing Shakespeare with folk,
classical etc. It is an especially big hit with my four year old. Kids
are much more receptive to this stuff than people give them credit
for...it's good to expose them early, when they are so open and
unhibited about the joys of music and language. Nevertheless I think
there are some valid criticisms from the other reviewers. Some songs are
more successful than others. It is hard to hear the spoken poetry (we
turn it up LOUD and then it is clear as a bell), maybe it wasn't "mixed"
properly. WE actually found that it appealed to us more and more with
repeated listenings, unlike the last reviewer (to each, his or her own).
My four year old especially loves the chipmunk song. My two year old
also loves the "Dance to your daddy" old celtic style nursery songs. The
ALleluia lullabye/carol is gorgeous (you can hear another version on the
beautiful Celtic Lullaby album). I love the selections of Shakespeare,
which stand well on their own out of context of the play and give
children an early chance to hear such lovely phrases as "we are such
stuff as dreams are made on." So I give it a four for doing all of this,
if not 100% successful, it still is pretty darn good and I hope it is
the first of many such efforts.

3 out of 5 stars The best album in the universe for me.......2003-11-01

If I could only have one LP/CD in life this would be my choice of all the music I have ever heard. I have had this since if was first released and I still find it exciting and new today. MJT+3.. ...Nicky Hill on tenor sax, Paul Serranno trumpet, Muhal Richard Abrams piano, Bob Cranshaw bass and Walter Perkins on drums. Except for a couple of standards, all compositions are original and the titles of these are very descriptiveo of the music. In introspection, aside from the compositions and unity cohesion of the group is that the rythm captivated me.
