Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell

Thanks to Anne Murray, there's proof that white girls can raise a strong, warm voice in praise, too. I have happily given copies of this CD to my diversity of friends, and many of them have expressed happy surprise. Contains probably the best rocking version anywhere of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee."

I share this music with my patients during Sunday morning group therapy and have always gotten a positive response. Patients who have refused to talk to the nurses and the counselors find themselves wanting to open up and talk about themselves and how they want to work harder on improving their lives. My co-workers will ask me every Sunday "do you have the CD?" and we go about our duties singing along with Anne and praising God.
I cannot adequately describe the joy that listening to Anne Murray singing
God's praises brings to me. I seldom attend church, but I always take the time to play her music on Sunday mornings and commune with the Lord.
Co-workers listening from down the hall will gravitate to our unit just to
listen. Even the hard-core, profanity-driven ones find themselves in a better place, even if it is for a brief moment, when they are listening to
this CD.

Years ago while I was overseas in the army I bought this tape and have enjoyed it very much. The tape has become old and worn and since I now have a computer the that plays CDs, personal CD player, CD player in my truck, and etc. I bought it on CD so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. Don't be fooled this CD can be enjoyed by any and everybody of all ages. I am 35 yrs. old but I also own CDs by Britney Spears, NSYNC, CCR, Backstreet Boys,the Eagles, B.B. King, Christina Aguilera, and many others and I enjoy all of them. If you enjoy the samples you well enjoy the whole album.

Columbia has released a series of CDs paying tribute to the Country Classics, volume 3 of which is entitled AMERICANA and contains twenty-five so called "saga songs", i.e. numbers which put to music stories of good vs. adversity.

This disk features a veritable posse of legendary artists. Johnny Cash is the most represented ("Don't Take Your Guns to Town", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "A Boy Named Sue", "Highwayman" - the last with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson). Others with more than one track are Marty Robbins ("Big Iron", "El Paso"), Hawkshaw Hawkins ("Twenty Miles from Shore", "Soldier's Joy"), and Stonewall Jackson ("Life to Go", "Waterloo").

Then, there are my favorites:

"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker) makes me yearn for the coonskin cap I had as a kid. It'd look mighty fine at the big management meeting. (Actually, I think it was rabbit fur.) I'd probably run afoul of PETA, though. And who needs that hassle?

"Big Bad John" (Jimmy Dean) reminds me of the hero I once aspired to be. Unfortunately, real, everyday life is pretty much mundane. Besides, there are no mines locally, and sewer work doesn't have quite the same cachet.

Even though I love just about everything British (except Lemon Shandy), "The Battle of New Orleans" (Johnny Horton) is a real toe-tapper. Makes me want to dump tea into Los Angeles harbor. In your eye, Tony!

The next time I have to pay my IRS taxes, perhaps playing for them "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" ("Little" Jimmy Dickens) would get a more warm `n' fuzzy response. Hmm ... maybe not.

Lastly, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys) brings to mind Ellie May sunbathing out by the CEEment Pond. Let's dwell on that vision for a long moment. Dang, Uncle Jed! (If you haven't a clue as to what I'm blathering on about here, then forget it, as you're too young to appreciate this CD anyway.)

My only regret concerning this collection of down-home favorites is that the catchy theme from "Green Acres" isn't included. Pity. I was hoping to sing along.

A must have for all true country music fans. It has the ballads and songs of the best bygone era in country music. Buy this and enjoy!

Oh, the memories!.......2000-06-29

I stumbled over this CD while looking for something with "Long Black Veil" on it. What a gold mine I found with all these mostly country oldies plus a few newer ones! About all that is missing is "Summer Wine" and "Miller's Cave." Even to my tin ears, the sound is great; and I certainly enjoy listening to the original recordings rather than someone else's.

This CD is worth it's weight in gold. The mix is outstanding. One of the few CD's that you'll enjoy playing straight through time and time again. The songs take us back to a more simple time. A lot of my musician friends tend to laugh a little when i say that Floyd Cramer is cool. But he is, and this sweet little gospel record is ample proof. He plays the songs straight, allowing their simple beauty to shine through, uncluttered. It is especially nice to hear him solo, without a band or fancy arrangements.

Great Old Time Southern Gospel!.......2006-11-10

You can't beat it! Southern gospel at it's best! One of the best groups you'll find,with some of their best hits. Four part harmony! Quartets with a high tenor and a low bass,and good melody line--wow!! I could listen all day! If you like gospel the "old fashioned" way,served up by a great group--buy a copy of this CD. Enjoy!

A must for Gospel Music lovers........2006-08-10

The Statesman were my favorite quartet for many years. I had most all their albums dating back to 1958. Jim "Big Chief" Weatherington was my hero with his bass singing. Not the "lowest" but the most melo. A friend of mine who owns a Gospel Music Radio station "gave to me" all the Statesmen music when they disbanded and I have always treasured it. Sadly, Hurricane Katrina took all of, not only The Statesmen, every peice of music I had. I'm now trying to replace what I can find, anywhere I can find it. Fact is that some of the Remastered CD's sound better than the old albums.(no scratches)

Iam a fan of old-time gospel music and this cd is excellent and the Statesmen are wonderful.I would recommend this cd to anyone who is building a gospel collection. I can listen to this cd al day long.

The Statesmen were the first SG group I listened to when I was first saved over 30yrs ago. The song "Unworthy" was my first solo soon after.. This group holds special meaning for me, and this recording is one I recommend. Anyone who is a fan of SG music should consider this a must-have...

HOW TO SUM THIS AWSOME CD UP!!!!!.......1999-08-10

This is a great CD...I am only 19 years old and am a BIG fan of this group when Rosie Rozell sang tenor for them (he is my hero). All of this CD is with him singing tenor exept for the first song. Really, I do recommend this for anyone who is a Statesmen fan or likes good Southern Gospel Quartet music...or SG music for that matter. GREAT CD!!!!! They need to put out more like this one.

Great Old Time Southern Gospel!.......2006-11-10

You can't beat it! Southern gospel at it's best! One of the best groups you'll find,with some of their best hits. Four part harmony! Quartets with a high tenor and a low bass,and good melody line--wow!! I could listen all day! If you like gospel the "old fashioned" way,served up by a great group--buy a copy of this CD. Enjoy!

A must for Gospel Music lovers........2006-08-10

The Statesman were my favorite quartet for many years. I had most all their albums dating back to 1958. Jim "Big Chief" Weatherington was my hero with his bass singing. Not the "lowest" but the most melo. A friend of mine who owns a Gospel Music Radio station "gave to me" all the Statesmen music when they disbanded and I have always treasured it. Sadly, Hurricane Katrina took all of, not only The Statesmen, every peice of music I had. I'm now trying to replace what I can find, anywhere I can find it. Fact is that some of the Remastered CD's sound better than the old albums.(no scratches)

Great collection of bluegrass oldies.......2003-12-28

This is the follow-up to an earlier collection called - you've guessed it - Appalachian stomp Bluegrass classics. That compilation (which I've already reviewed) includes all the traditional bluegrass songs that are famous outside bluegrass circles including Blue moon of Kentucky, Foggy mountain breakdown, The ballad of Jed Clampett, Rocky top and Duelling banjos.

This collection mainly focuses on songs that are regarded as bluegrass classics by bluegrass fans but are generally not known by the public, except for two songs that are bluegrass covers of non-bluegrass songs. Fox on the run was a top ten UK pop hit for Manfred Mann in the late sixties but has become a bluegrass standard. City of New Orleans is a folk-country standard, which has been recorded by many fine singers including Willie Nelson, Judy Collins, Lynn Anderson and John Denver. Now you get the chance to hear a bluegrass version by the Seldom Scene.

The other songs here feature some of the biggest names in traditional bluegrass including Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanley brothers (including Ralph, whose recent albums have done so much to widen the appeal of bluegrass music), Mac Wiseman, Jim and Jesse, The Osbourne brothers and the Country gentleman. Alison Krauss closes the set with one of her early recordings.

If you enjoyed the previous volume, you will love this. If you haven't heard the other volume, buy that first.

This CD is totally rocking! There is not a bad song on it. It has a lot of variety. Just a great buy.
