At this point, who else but Tony Bennett would have the clout to round up stars on the scale of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bono, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand for some duets? (Note also that unlike some similar projects, all the parties involved on this CD were alive when it was recorded!) The material consists of relatively obvious classics in standard big-band arrangements, and Bennett himself is in top form at age 80, so much so that he doesn't need anybody else to handle "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." But the fun comes from checking out how his collaborators fare. The Dixie Chicks provide wonderful Andrews Sisters-type harmonies on the percolating version of "Lullaby of Broadway" that opens the festivities. The best songs tend to be the ones where Bennett's slightly craggy voice is juxtaposed to smooth female ones, like Diana Krall on "The Best Is Yet to Come," familiar accomplice k.d. lang on the sultry "Because of You" and Streisand—-perhaps Bennett's only equal in stature at this point—on "Smile." Among the less expected guests, soulman John Legend is a revelation on the hard-swinging "Sing, You Sinners," while George Michael confirms he's quite the crooner on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Elvis Costello, Celine Dion or Juanes don't sound as comfortable, and sometimes it feels as if they overdo it to compensate, but overall this collection is among the best of its kind, with most guests rising to the occasion. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars I'm gonna wear this one out.......2007-07-19

What a great disc! Not only wonderful Tony, but some other great singers, as well. I listen to it in my car and then bring it in at home so I can listen some more. I fell in love with Tony Bennett in 1953 - even wrote him love letters. I was 13 and was thrilled when I received a signed glossy 8x10 photo from him. I belonged to his fan club. His "Rags to Riches" was on the radio a lot, and I had a little 45 player in my room to spin his records on. What a thrill to fall in love with him all over again in my old age! This album is a keeper. My favorite is his duet with Stevie Wonder, whose timing and sound are excellent. I wish there was a whole album of them together. Same with Diana Krall. Buy it. You won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Tony Bennett.......2007-07-16

Great duets, enjoyed every song on the CD!! He still continues to amaze me with that silky voice. He's a legend....

5 out of 5 stars It really swings.......2007-07-14

All classics with new voices. I bought it after seeing the special on PBS.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but the voice is going--sorry.......2007-06-27

I would say "OK" but it is not of the quality of the Ray Charles' duets. Tony is fantastic but time diminshes the quality of the voice.

5 out of 5 stars Watch the DVD, then rate the album.......2007-06-23

PBS ran the tape of the making of Duets and gave me a whole new perspective on the CD. I now can visualize each song as I listen, and it has enhanced my enjoyment of the best tracks while making ones I thought were not as good much more in line with the Bennett tradition of "telling the story" of each song. He gets inside the music and lives there with such ease.

There is nobody who can blend with Bennett's voice better than k.d. lang - except Diana Krull, James Taylor, Tim McGraw or, well, most of the other people chosen to sing with him.

This record is joyful and not enhanced, as one reviewer suggested. Hearing/seeing how Bennett works with lyrics and other performers still amazes me. I've been a fan since his first recording - there was nothing like a Bennett song for setting the mood.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Country: Great Duets.......2007-01-22

This is one of the best I've heard if you like country & duets... Absolutely wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars Missing Some Major Duets!! .......2005-07-26

These tracks are all excellent but frankly several major country duets are not here!! Where on earth are Kenny Rogers and Dottie West?? Instead we get Rogers with Sheena Easton and the Rogers/Easton combo makes it almost entirely a pop recording and it should not be on this package. Buck Owens & Rose Maddox have a track but where is Buck with his far more famous duet partner Susan Raye? The Merle Haggard - Janie Fricke track should not have been included since she really only just sings harmony on the record. Why aren't Jimmy Wakely & Margaret Whiting who started the male/female star duet craze in 1949 with Slipping Around here or Kitty Wells & Red Foley, the first superstar duet? And where are Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, David Houston & Barbara Mandrell, Bobby Bare & Skeeter Davis, Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell, Don Gibson & Dottie West, Johnny Duncan & Janie Fricke, to name just a few of the famous country duos of yore. Instead we have too many tracks with the same artists here. It's a very good package but it should have been a great and classic one.

Given his enormous talent and unparalleled musical history--not to mention the healthy, suffer-no-fools ego they inspired--it's hardly surprising that duets are relatively few and far between in Frank Sinatra's catalog, his smash duet on "Somethin' Stupid" with daughter Nancy notwithstanding. But in the heyday of the TV variety show, the star-hosted format virtually demanded musical cross-pollination, a tradition that carried over from radio. It's that fertile, largely unexplored territory that this rewarding, 21-track anthology (most previously unreleased on CD) explores in conjunction with the PBS special of the same name.

Here, Sinatra scales the jazz summit with Louis Armstrong on "Birth of the Blues" and does three electrifying collaborations with one of his faves, Ella Fitzgerald. Rat Pack cohorts Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.--along with honorary member Bing Crosby--loosen up the legend as always, and even rival Elvis Presley gets the Chairman's respect on a wonderfully playful meeting-of-the-icons medley of "Witchcraft"-"Love Me Tender." A warm, welcome addition to the Sinatra canon, whose banter-filled performances emphasize the saloon singer supreme's humor and humanity. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars these are sinatra's songs.......2004-02-08

i'm a huge fan of ol' blue eyes, and i can't say i dislike this cd .. these are only some of his classic songs, and it's very enjoyable to listen to frank sinatra sing with some modern artists .. but some of the tracks are butchered by the other half of the duet .. they try to make it their own song, when the truth is, it's FRANK SINATRA's song .. it's his own genre, and some of the artists on the cd like gloria estefan, luther vandross, and julio iglesias, who are all in different music genres than sinatra, try too hard to make it sound different .. i guess they're trying to make the song unique, but it definitely doesn't work for me .. the highlights of the whole cd are "they can't take that away from me" & "new york, new york" and others

2 out of 5 stars Duets III is a Disappointment.......2003-05-10

Although I loved "Duets" and "Duets II", "Duets III" simply does not make the grade. With 21 tracks, perhaps the producer thought that he'd make up for in quantity what the album lacks in quality. Quality is what is lacking in this album. The tracks are of poor acoustical quality compared to Duets 1 and 2. It sounds as though most of the tracks were lifted from TV and radio recordings - the sound quality truly suffers in the process. Oh, there are some brief rays of sunshine, but overall, the album only appeals to those who have to have every song Sinatra ever recorded.

I do not recommend this album. If you can get it used or at a discounted price it might be worth it, but even then, it is an album that disappoints.

Jim Konedog Koenig

4 out of 5 stars Broad Variety for the Chairman.......2003-01-27

For many, Frank Sinatra is THE consummate crooner. And some of his work really shines anew when it's done in concert with another performer. Hence the success and quality of Duets and Duets II. So it's not unusual for another trip back to the vault to produce the Classic Duets. What results is a hodge-podge of duets which are more notable for their variety than their quality. As noted, many of these come from old videotape and such, so the sound quality is not the best on all the songs. and some of the medleys get tiresome, just bouncing from one song to another with neither performer bringing much to the collaboration. But it does also sport some one time collaborations with other premier artists of the era, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima & Keely Smith, Bing Crosby and fellow rat-packers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Acting as an interesting counterpoint are duets with his daughter Nancy, including a touching father-daughter duet of "You Make Me Feel So Old (Young)" that help to spotlight the paternal side of Frank. Collections such as this always seem to sport a surprise track that is just off the wall - on this one it's a duet with Frank and Elvis which, while not deep or groundbreaking, is surprisingly fun with each artist crooning the other's song.

This disc is not THE collection to get for Sinatra's work with other artists. It is a perfect disc for the fan who is looking for examples of his broad-based collaboration, and proof that the other Duets albums were not opportunistic collaborations, rather they were an outgrowth of what Frank had been doing all along.

1 out of 5 stars Frank Sinatra Classic Duets.......2003-01-23

Quite disappointed. It is poor recording.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2002-12-30

A couple of notes while reading the other reviews. Capitol is merely the vessel-this collection comes via the Sinatra family vault(Nancy,Frank Jr.&Tina's holdings)and is pre-Reprise(Bristol)material,hence,no Jobim, which occured in the '60s. The liner notes are filled with recollections by the kids-OK,I guess, but I miss the sure and steady hand of Will Friedwald,a fan and critic, taking us through this material. Having said this,I suspect the "Duets" concept was used as a brand and adds another release of family material(often bootlegged) being made available through legitimate means, after the debacle of the Artanis gold recordings of a few years ago. The '90s "Duets"I&II were purchased by well-meaing gift givers and, sadly, served as an intro to Frank for many new ears but proved to be a very successful brand, hence the marketing people dusting it off again. As for the material in this collection-this will stand along my copies of the other Duets but will actually be played rather than gathering dust. Along with the many raves from others here(the words about Frank & Peggy Lee are quite insightful)may I cast a vote for the medley with Dinah Shore. Frank & Dinah allude to performing this same group of songs before,(probably on one of Dinah's shows)but, rather than sounding tired, they just seem to love this material and Dinah's voice is a fine foil to Frank's(IMHO-Keely Smith was the perfect duet partner for Frank). A pleasant addition to the collection, not a moment to feel ashamed by Frank or any of his partners. I'm ready for the next one, please.

      5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, soulful collaboration.......2004-10-27

"Simpatico" is the one word that I think best describes Willie Nelson and Kimmie Rhodes, two Texas crooners whose voices and musical inclinations meld with startling beauty. Either singer can crest to the top or fall back into humble harmonies in this set of ten fine duets. The songs are mostly Kimmie Rhodes originals, though Willie contributes two ("Valentine" and "It Will Always Be") with the remainder of the set coming from sources as disparate as Tom Waits (the wrote title track), Rodney Crowell and Rhodes' partner, Joe Gracey. For folks who like understated, well-crafted American music with deep, deep roots and perfect emotional pitch, this record is the real deal. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars "Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two," ..........2005-10-24

wrote Frederic Chopin. Those who enjoy classical guitar music find special pleasure in duets. The repertoire for duets is less frequently played, yet offers more possibilities for textural and harmonic effects than solo guitar. In such capable hands as Christopher Parkening and David Brandon, few musical experiences could give greater listening pleasure.

This album is, sadly, no longer in print and thus makes it even more collectable. Please buy this CD before you loose the chance to hear some the most beautifully played classical guitar duets ever recorded.

4 out of 5 stars Parkening and Brandon Duo.......2001-12-14

This duo plays very well; however, the best tracks of this CD are on the Parkening "Great Recordings" double CD. Thus buying that CD would get you the best of this CD plus a lot of other good recordings. The duo's performance of "La Vida Breve," "Intermezzo," and "Evening Dance" are my favorites (and are included on the "Great Recordings" CD).

5 out of 5 stars GREAT TRADITIONAL COUNTRY!!!.......2005-04-24

This is Audrey Auld's first release that was released in 1998. (I've previously review her latest CD in a previous issue of SCC-Nytt.) This is good traditional country. Bill Chambers is the father of Aussie singer-songwriter Kasey Chambers. He sings very good and he sometimes sings very like Gram Parsons. This is mostly shown on the song Kiss The Children, that Gram recorded in 1973. One of this CD's best songs. The CD has 14 songs, where half are covers and half are written by them. The best songs are "Losing Side Of Love", "What`s In Our Hearts", "We`ll Sweep Out The Ashes In The Morning" and "Searching". The last song "Meet Me Up There" makes me think of Mother Maybelle & The Carter Family with its` autoharp, harmony and guitarpickin'. This CD is recorded in Australia with Australian musicians that are very talented. I know there are people out there that only buy countrymusic from American or Canadian singers. But do buy Audrey Auld -this is actually one of 1998`s best records!

5 out of 5 stars Don't go past this one!.......2005-04-18

If you are looking for music that has that old-style country sound then you have found it! What a delight to listen to Bill and Audrey harmonise on 14 great songs, half of which are written by the artists. And the musicianship is outstanding - dobro, lap steel, pedal steel, banjo, acoustic guitar - you will think you've gone to heaven, it is that good!

          5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-07-16

I recently saw Bill Chambers and Audrey Auld at Threadgill's (south)in Austin, Texas... what a show! These two are wonderful! They invited several onstage: Colin Gilmore, Trish Murphy, Billy Dee, Eric Blakeley and fellow Australian Catherine Britt.

Former (?) Australians Kym Warner (mandolin) and Carol Young (bass) were the rest of Bill and Audrey's band that night(and 2/3 of "The Greencards," an Austin group) and were featured as well.

If you can, check out all of these artists, they put on one heck of a show.

As for the "review" for the "Bill & Audrey" CD... I bought the CD from Audrey after the show...it is wonderful. If you like good, old fashioned, "honky tonk" country music, you should love this one!

5 out of 5 stars Follow up notes.......2002-10-21

I had reviewed this album earlier but wanted to add some notes:
NOTE 1: Audrey (Auld) has now moved to Texas and has a new album -- Fallen. There is no mention of this album in the Fallen write-up.
NOTE 2: To Joyce A (the writer of "We'll sweep out the ashes in the morning" -- Bill & Audrey do a great job. Also (if you can find it) there is another interesting version (faster) of the song by Bennie Jolink on his "Howling at the Moon." He is Dutch -- I picked the album up in Amsterdam: Mercury 546 275-2. I don't know if you can get it in the states.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Country -- from Australia.......2001-01-15

I picked up this album in Sydney last year. I'm a long-time c&w fan (17 years in Texas), and I like to check out c&w in other countries on my business trips. I found a number of collections of country songs by Australian singers (mostly covers of U.S. top 40 stuff); then I found this album. It is spectacular. Bill & Audrey would be at home singing anywhere in Texas. They have great voices (Audrey's voice is in the class of memorable voices like Patsy Cline); some of the songs are old material (Honky Tonk Merry Go Round et. al.) but some are new "classics" in their own right. This is not for the Shania Twain crowd who want their country "pop" -- this is for serious country fans. If you want the real thing, check this out. You won't find yourself running back to Brooks & Dunn.
