1994 is stubbornly, unmistakably Merle Haggard. The sense that nothing could surprise this man who's seen everything is heard not just in the vocals but in every corner of this album, from the unfussy picking to the no-nonsense production. This album portrays a cash crop farmer ("In My Next Life"), a chicken farmer ("Set My Chickens Free"), an opening act musician ("Troubador") and even a househusband ("Chores"). It's not just that he takes working folks as his subject matter; he also reflects their philosophy that nothing--neither love nor money--comes easy. And on "I Am an Island," the singer responds to heartache with a reserved dignity which only implies the pain he's hiding, but which makes that pain seem far more real than the hurt blurted out by a blubbering fool. And his interpretation of Willie Nelson's "Valentine" is even better than Nelson's. Country singing doesn't get any better than this. --Geoffrey Himes

A good overview of Sting's radio hits and popular album tracks with only one major omission ("Mad About You"), Fields of Gold also offers three previously-unreleased songs. "This Cowboy Song" and "When We Dance" appear on no other album, while "We'll Be Together" is an alternate version. The import version of this collection offers a substantially different (and expanded) track listing, dropping "Fortress Around Your Heart," "Be Still My Beating Heart," and "Why Should I Cry for You"; and adding "Mad About You," "Nothing 'Bout Me," "Seven Days," "It's Probably Me," "Love is the Seventh Wave," and "Demolition Man." --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:

misleading at best.......2006-11-06
The version of We'll Be Together (a great song) is an alternate take (mix?), VASTLY inferior to the album / radio version. It's anemic. Lacks the punch. In a word -- sucks.
That you're not told this on the cover is misleading.
I really enjoy Mr. Sumner's music. All the other tunes are as they should be, and they are terrific. 4-5 stars. But don't buy this product if you expect to hear what you've heard on the album or the radio.

Below Average Beethoven Performances.......2007-03-10
Of all old school directors such as Karajan, Toscanini, etc., Solti's performances are simply morbidly slow to the point of killing the grieving attendants with boredom. The cacophony of the oversized orchestra doesn't help either. Solti's interpretations are even too slow for a requiem. You think a regular interpretation of the 7th's second movement is slow? Wait 'til you hear this one; you're going to need a massage you'll be so stiff. The 9th symphony march is supposed to be a brisk revolutionary march calling the citizens to arms and to join the militia marching through a town. With Solti you imagine only a funeral procession coming through the town. In the Fifth the whole orchestra is almost struggling to slow down to match the strings. Karajan's interpretations are not particularly fast either but at least he breathes some life into them and the orchestra. I personally like Toscanini in terms of the old 20th century symphonic conductors and Gardiner's traditional interpretations that are at least at a correct speed and give the listener the impression they are marching off as part of a revolutionary batallion to bring liberty to the oppressed instead of being rolled to the morgue. Beethoven was a revolutionary anti-monarchist and strongly supported the idea of political change. Although Periah is a great pianist for Beethoven's concertos, there are simply better performances by him that fortunately aren't conducted by Solti such as on Sony with Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The same goes for the performances with Axe and Yo-Yo Ma. Gidon Kramer's performance for the Violin Concerto in D is also mediocre at best: there are better violinists out there than Kremer for Beethoven.
This is just not the best CD to get quality performances of Beethoven's works. Overall, Solti's interpretations are simply too sluggish and indecipherable to represent the ideals of Beethoven's music. Solti would definitely be my last choice for anything. You won't lose anything by not buying this soundtrack that's for sure: Solti's interpretations are so slow they will simply fossilize you.

Best cast EVER!.......2007-05-15
ANTHONY WARLOW--THE BEST JEKYLL & HYDE EVER!.......2006-12-02
Anthony Warlow has one of the most exceptional singing voices I have ever heard, and his rendition in this recording is the best anywhere. People have wondered why he did not do this role on the stage, and I can only guess it is because he is a cancer survivor and the role would be too much for him to take physically. You can hear the intensity just in his vocals on this recording, and how much energy it takes. It is exhausting just to listen to him--so can you imagine the physical and emotional intensity it would take to do eight shows a week?
Although David Hasselhorf did a decent job acting in the Jekyll & Hyde DVD, his singing is very poor and it is obvious he has never had any classical training. He has a misplaced vibrato and really struggles with "This is the Moment", contorting his body which restricted his breathing and caused him to struggle even more vocally. He also has a terrible British Accent.
Anthony Warlow on the other hand, can sing everything from pop to opera. Many of his recordings are available online. He has also played the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in either Australia or England, and how I wish I could hear that recording, although there is not an original cast recording made. If you would like to hear him sing songs from Phantom, however, you can get a CD entitled The Main Event with him, Olivia Newton-John, and John Farnham, who is also absolutely incredible. I bought this CD and was blown away. Anthony's rendition of Phantom tunes is absolutely mind boggling.
I also learned Anthony played the lead role of Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, opposite a lovely actress (british, I believe) named Marina Pryor, who also played opposite him in The Secret Garden. What talent!
So do a web search on this talented individual and get some of his CDs--he is a delight!
Why can't they have a case like this on stage production ?.......2006-11-11
OK, so I have heard couple actors that played Jekyll had made nomination to Tony's, but how come this musical is not as popular as The Phantom of the Opera ? Perhaps the closest attempt to make a equivalent version of movie is Julie Robert's "Mary Reilly" in 1996, which, of course, no music, but tell a wonderful story.
Again, let's focus back to the "music" portion. The concept cast has two leading ladies to play Lucy and Lisa, which is far better than the previous 1990 release case. It's just not quite right, something buggy, to have the same lady sing both Lucy and Lisa. This complete soundtrack, listen from the beginning to the end, you will feel the difference of personality via voice and interpretation between two leading ladies, that makes the story telling.
Let's not forget the leading "Jekyll / Hyde". Gosh, how come this guy is not famous here in the States ? You thought you are listening to 2 difference persons, it's the same guy. Come on, how many singers out there can sing in front of live audiance day in day out non-stop for 3 hours plus "acting" ? You got to respect for their talent and profession disciplines.
I have "wasted" 3 sets of this soundtracks because they got worn out and I just have to have the replacements. I love every piece of it, particularly "Letting Go", "It's a dangerous game", "A New Life" and "Take me as I am" the most. Of course, the "Once upon a time" is something you can't miss. You will feel the "vibe" without doubt and get into the story, big time.
Anothe recommendation, which I am a bit sad they took it out of this release is the "Till you came into my life". I love this one, but only available in the 1990 Original Highlight. It's something quite sweet, and poweful.
The later production, well, worth owning, but not exactly worth getting a replacement once its worn out.
Enjoy the story, and embrace that lttle spilt personalities inside.
Act I of this CD is superb.......2006-08-20
For example:
"I need to know" is a great song about passion for knowledge and desire to improve the human condition, which is troubled by our dual desires for good and evil (or misbehavior, if you prefer). The tune simply soars!
"Facade/Bitch, bitch, bitch" is a fabulous song about snobbery, social class, people trying to impress other people, and people badmouthing other people.
"Board of Governors" is about the meeting of the Board of Governors of the hospital that discusses and turns down Dr. Jekyll's request for support for his project. They accuse him of playing God (with some justification, though the accusation is very mean-spirited).
"Bring on the men," though not highly original in theme, is such a fabulous tune and sung so superbly that I very much enjoy the song despite the lyrics.
This production has not just one, but two love interests, however, that seem to dominate the second Act II.
For me, I'll listen to Act I again and again and again. It has the richness of story, lyric, and tune that stands up to repeated listening.
In sum, Act I is among the best Broadway has to offer, if you like drama and grand tunes.
What an experience.......2006-03-27
When Jekyll and Hyde was staged in Vienna we adored it so much that we watched it three times in a row. Now almost four years later my twinsister decided to ship the english version from the USA to Austria and I tell you when I first listened to it I was simply carried away by my emotions. What magnificent and melodious voices some people have. It is just amazing. If I could afford it I would invite the whole essemble into my living room for a private performance. Anthony Warlow and Linda Eder as well as everyone else in the production did a really great job.

It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event--phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars, and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavor of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high, and loud--and you don't take your opera too seriously--you'll love this disc. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

Give em a 3.5.......2004-01-25
This event, like the first one in Rome, has a magnificent setting but, like Rome, the show was marketed mainly to the American audience. They still include the dreadful "Maria" with the hilarious pronunciation and even added "With a Song In My Heart" (or, as Carreras is wont to sing, "Weeth a Soeeng een My Haht"). Though some may deride the choice of encores, they were almost perfect. The Three Tenors, despite their prior celebrity, are creations of our culture of entertainment in ways that Caruso could only dream about.
Synopsis: Carreras stands out, Domingo substitutes volume for quality and Pavarotti soars when he doesn't have to.

It's unfortunate that Terri Clark gained her highest chart debut with "Girls Lie Too," a hideously cartoonish song that perpetuates stereotypes about the sexes and, by its success, about country music fans. Clark, a Canadian tomboy in a rakish and attitudinal cowboy hat, has always played on her image as an independent female yearning for a relationship as strong as her personality. That worked well on a number of early songs, especially "Better Things to Do" and on the new "One of the Guys." But clearly she's yearned to expand her subject matter, and in recording songs co-written with Kim Richey, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Mary Chapin Carpenter (a live version of their "No Fear" appears here), she nurtured the questioning side of her inner singer-songwriter. Clark has never really fit any kind of niche, and one suspects she's now caught between trying to stay alive commercially and satisfying herself as an artist. Greatest Hits is a colorful road map to the first 10 years of her journey, even as she seems to be doubling back on certain stretches of that highway. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
Kickin Canadian Country.......2007-06-13
Better Things to Do - a sassy tune telling a guy that she is over him and moved on
When Boy Meets Girl - a boy is about to discover love
Poor Poor Pitiful Me - good Terri take on the Zevon tune
Emotional Girl - good, fast. The singer tells a guy to realize she's got passion and he better be ready to handle it.
You're Easy on the Eyes - kinda gritty and a bit randy. The singer is physically attracted to a hot guy but is remembering that he is trouble otherwise.
Little Gasoline - singer is driving away from some junk in her past and is enjoying freedom.
I Wanna Do It All - uptempo number about living life full bore
Girls Lie Too - Once the listener accepts that this song is not meant to be taken seriously, then it's humorous. It's about women also making excusing and massaging guys' egos with little white lies at times. Not sexist, just joshing.
One of the Guys - singer isn't a pretty, fragile thing. She can hang out with the boys and do the "rough stuff" too.
Very good compilation album of contemporary female country. It helped me get into listening to more country in addtion to the rock and pop I glomed onto as a kid.

An Everclear Fan Who refuses to buy this Album.......2005-02-25
I would have really liked to have seen some of their fantastic, less well known songs on this album like 'Sunflowers,' 'Amphetamine,' or 'White Men in Black Suits' off of 'So Much for the Afterglow', by far Everlears best album. Their inclusion of less well known songs from 'Sparkle and Fade' is good, but they really shortchange themselves on what they wrote during their early days on 'World of Noise'
Eveclear, I hope, is starting to show some hope. I believe that they have seen their last two albums for the failures that they are. Their sound has become extremely weak and uninspired, their lyrics a far cry from the smack-you-in the face stuff that they used to write. The only glimmer of hope I saw on their latest release, 'Slow-Motion Daydream' was 'Crysanthemum,' which heralds a very pure and stripped-away quality of acuoustic guitar, blended ever so slightly with effective sound effects of blowing wind and haunting lyrics. 'New York Times' is half way good, but is nothing that stands up above anything else that any unpublished poet or musician wrote to express their feelings in a post 9/11 world.
10 Years are definetly gone, and the last 4 of them are WAY gone. i hope you get your rear in gear Art. You've done it before, now do it again. I know '20 Years Gone' can be a much better shot.
Everclear's Best Of is a great CD for anyone to own........2005-01-12
This is a great Everclear best of CD. I am glad there are 21 songs and that it is almost 80 minutes long. There are 2 b-sides on here called Local God (from the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack) and The Boys Are Back In Town (a Thin Lizzy cover that was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack). There are also 2 new songs on here that were originally recorded during Everclear's recording sessions for their previous CD Slow Motion Daydream. The new songs are called Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) and The New Disease.
The songs and what I think of them is the following:
#01. Wonderful - This is a great pop sounding song from them. It is a big hit too. This is a great song to listen to when you are in a good mood. Even though the lyrics sound happy, they are not.
#02. Santa Monica - This is a great rock song from them with a great beat and great words. This is this first big hit and the song that made them famous.
#03. Everything To Everyone - This is another good rock song that was a big hit. This was followed by other hit songs that broke them into the mainstream music concious.
#04. AM Radio - This is another big hit with a 70's feel to it. It surprised me by how popular it became. This is not a favorite of mine off of here, but I like it. It is a necessity for this CD.
#05. Volvo Driving Soccer Mom - I like this song a lot. It was a hit but not a big one. This song did not help their CD Slow Motion Daydream sell well because not many people liked this song I guess or that album.
#06. I Will Buy You A New Life - This song was a huge hit. I think it was either this song, Santa Monica, Father Of Mine, or Wonderful that was their biggest hit. This is the song that broke them into the mainstream music concious and made them a household name. If you didn't know Everclear from their song Santa Monica off their CD Sparkle And Fade, you now did because of this song off their CD So Much For The Afterglow.
#07. Learning How To Smile - I don't remember this song being a hit. But it is another kind of pop song from them. It is not as good as Wonderful in my opinion. Both these songs can be found off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. One: Learning How To Smile, which is their most pop sounding CD.
#08. Strawberry - This song was a small hit. It is a slower song, but I like it and the acoustic guitar that you can hear throughout the whold thing. I like the words to this song and how well they go with the music.
#09. Local God - This song was a hit in Austraila. I am not sure if it was here in the U.S.A. But it sure sounds like it was, because it is a great sounding rock song and sounds like a big hit. This is the first b-side off this CD. It was originally on the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack. If it wasn't a big hit, then that is because it is a off a soundtrack and wasn't promoted right. This is a favorite Everclear song of mine.
#10. Summerland - This is another hit, not a big one or small one though. In the booklet for this CD Art Alexakis says about this song: Hands down... my favorite Everclear song of all time. This is a slow rock song. Not a favorite of mine, but I like it some.
#11. Fire Maple Song - This was not a hit. But if it was, it would have been their first one. This is the only song on this compilation CD off their first CD World Of Noise. This song is alright. It is growing on me. It is another slower rock song. I wish they included another song or two from their first CD on this compilation than some others included on here.
#12. When It All Goes Wrong Again - This is their first hit off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. Two: Good Time For A Bad Attitude, which is the more rocking of the two Songs From American Movie CDs. This is another rock song. I prefer their song Rock Star over this one. Both songs are on Good Time For A Bad Attitude.
#13. Father Of Mine (Radio Mix) - Father Of Mine was another huge hit from Everclear. This is the radio mix version, so if you have So Much For The Afterglow, this version may sound a little different to you. But it still sounds good. This is Art Alexakis's favorite version of this song. This is Everclear song has touched and helped more people than any other.
#14. The Boys Are Back In Town - This song was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack. It is a cover of an old Thin Lizzy song. This is a good rock song. This song is the second b-side off of this CD. I like this song better than their cover of Brown Eyed Girl.
#15. Heroin Girl - This is a rock great song. This was a big hit and another one of my favorite Everclear songs. This is the fastest song off of this CD. It has great music and the lyrics are really cool. I love listening to this song. It is cool.
#16. Brown Eyed Girl - This is another hit song. This is a slow rock song. But that should be obvious since it is a cover of the Van Morrison classic. This is a good cover, but I prefer The Boys Are Back In Town over this one. But this is still good.
#17. Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) - This is the first previously unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. It is not that hard but not that soft either. I like the words and the music to it.
#18. The New Disease - This is the second previosly unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. I am not sure if this song or Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) were hits or not. I am not sure which one I like better. They are both good songs. I am glad that they are on here.
#19. The New York Times - This song is about hoping there is love and compassion in this post 9/11 world. 9/11 plus something tragic that happened to a poor soul in Everclear's hometown of Portland Oregon inspired Art Alexakis to write this. He wrote this hoping the world would stop hating and fearing, and start loving and being compassionate. This is a slow moving rock song. A definiate inclusion on this CD. I like this good hit song too.
#20. Song From An American Movie Pt. 1 - If any song doesn't deserve to be on this CD, it is this one. This is just a soft nice intro to a previous CD of theirs. They should have taken this song off and replaced it with the song One Hit Wonder off the CD So Much For The Afterglow. That would have been better.
#21. Rock Star - This is of course a rock song. I like this song a lot. It has great music and some cool lyrics that got misinterpreted by a lot of fans of the band. This is another hit song. This is a great way to end the CD. This is another favorite Everclear song of mine. It is a song I am sure you will like too. It is a loud fast and just excellent song of theirs.
So there you have it. 21 great songs from a great band. I am glad I got this CD. I recommend it to anyone, even if you don't like the band or already have all of their other CDs. Pick it up.
It is too bad though that Everclear is just done to one member now, Art Alexakis. But he promises another Everclear album later this year. I hope he makes a great one with some great musicians. Everclear is a good band and I hope they live on and on.
Just go out and pick up this CD and enjoy it as much as I do.

Album Description
If you've never heard of Todd Snider, then That Was Me: Todd Snider 1994-1998 is an introduction. If you're already a fan, then his first compilation, following seven critically acclaimed albums, is a tribute to the wry, honest, brutal and yet funny Snider. Featuring 17 tracks culled from his first three albums plus a previously unreleased cover of Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville"--all digitally remastered from the original master tapes--That Was Me was created with Snider's full participation and includes his own liner notes and detailed songography. An iconoclastic hero of alt-country, Americana, college radio and modern folk, Snider's influences are the likes of Randy Newman, Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Born in Portland, OR, he moved to Santa Rosa, CA, after high school and learned to play the harmonica. His brother, living in Austin, TX, figured Todd might find a job in a band there so he sent him a plane ticket. After seeing Jerry Jeff play in a local bar, Snider indeed decided that was what he wanted to do with his life. During a mid-'80s stint in Memphis where he established a residency at the Daily Planet club, he was discovered by Keith Sykes, a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. John Prine then hired Snider as an assistant and eventually had him open shows. When Buffett heard Snider's demos, he signed him to his MCA imprint Margaritaville Records. His debut album, 1994's Songs for the Daily Planet, starred "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" as well as "Alright Guy," "Trouble," "You Think You Know Somebody," "Easy Money" and "That Was Me." For 1996's Step Right Up, Snider and his band, the Nervous Wrecks, continued blending bluegrass, blues, folk-rock and country-rock to forge their own distinctive sound. That Was Me reprises its "Enough," "Hey Hey," "Moon Dawg's Tavern," "Horseshoe Lake," "Tension," "Better Than Ever Blues (Part Two)," "Late Last Night" and "Side Show Blues." 1998's Viva Satellite contributes "Can't Complain," "Guaranteed" and "Doublewide Blues." Snider has since issued four albums on Prine's indie Oh Boy Records, including 2004's East Nashville Skyline, and he continues to tour across the country.Customer Reviews:

Todd Snider - That Was Me.......2006-08-24
For the most part, these are good roots-y Americana folk/country songs for the modern times. He's hilarious as far as writers go. If he were an author, he'd be one of those quirky guys who have a cult following. I enjoyed most of the songs on here a lot. There were only one or two which I didn't care for - and that's pretty good at 18 songs.
If you like cool, unique, weird, talented singer/songwriters, Todd Snider's the guy for you. This is a good introduction to some of his earlier stuff. I would definitely recommend picking up his more recent stuff too.

Good Summary Of Old Stuff But Should Have More New Stuff For Long Time Fans.......2005-10-19
I'm only disappointed because the above cover version is the only new thing for the fans who have all of his CDs. I'm sure there had to be some more unreleased material out there that could have been added as Todd is known for his cover versions in his live shows. Even if it meant removing a studio track or two, I think you could have a perfect mix of introducing newbies while satisfying the "oldbies".
Another nit is that the liner notes are extremely hard to read that I actually scanned a few of the pages to blow them up to read (no joke). But all-in-all, it is a decent purchase to make.

Based on the Italian movie Passione d'amore, Stephen Sondheim's Passion is a story of obsessive love. Giorgio (Jere Shea), a soldier, and Clara (Marin Mazzie), a woman with a husband and child, are deeply in love, but their idyllic happiness is disrupted when Giorgio is transferred to another post. Here, he meets Signora Fosca (Donna Murphy), a homely and ill woman who is the cousin of the regiment's commanding officer. Fosca soon falls in love with Giorgio and pursues him relentlessly, saying "Loving you is not a choice / It's who I am." He is repulsed and resists her advances, but eventually, he succumbs to the power of her love.Rather than a succession of individual songs strung together by dialogue, Sondheim's score is a constant flow of gorgeous music. (The original theater program listed no individual songs.) The plot is conveyed by song, some dialogue, letters between the characters, and a group of soldiers that serves as a Greek chorus. The result is more of a chamber opera than a conventional musical. Passion won Tonys for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book of 1994, and Murphy also won a Tony for her powerful performance as Fosca. Mazzie is in glorious voice as Clara, and Shea brings a pretty voice and a wooden personality to Giorgio. --David Horiuchi

Love Without Reason.......2006-12-16
Many listeners may have a hard time understanding why Giorgio's affections turn from the beautiful young (albeit married) Clara to the sickly Fosca, but the lyrics and the score weave such a spell that you are caught up in it. Love here is not necessarily a happy thing. Yes, the opening song, a duet sung by Giorgio and Clara, is an ode to the joy of being in love, but Giorgio's idea of love progresses to something darker and deeper as he comes to know Fosca more and more. As Clara attempts to schedule her affair with Giorgio around her husband, Giorgio arrives at a conclusion that his feelings were something else:
Love isn't something scheduled in advance
Not something guarenteed
You need
For for fear it may pass you by
You have to take a chance
You can't just try it out
What's love unless it's unconditional?
Love doesn't give a damn about tomorrow and neither do I!
He comes to know his feelings for Clara as "Love within reason/ that isn't love". At the same time Fosca is literally staking him, which at first he resents and later relents to an idea of:
Love without reason
Love without mercy
Love without pride or shame
Love unconcerned with being returned
No wisedom, no judgement, no caution no blame
It is Fosca that loves him with this completeness, and he can't help but return it.
Many of the songs are letters written from one character to another and that stucture takes some getting used to. In fact it's hard to isolate individual songs here. Each one flows into the next to create the effect of a unified whole. At the end all the characters sing bits of each song in the show as Giorgio reads Fosca's final letter to him they come together in a musical climax before fading out, leaving only Giorgio and Fosca softly singing "your love will live in me"
Marin Mazzie is a gorgeous Clara who's voice shimmers in a luminious way. As Giorgio Jere Shea sounds fine but falls rather short emotionally. He hits all the notes but with little feeling (Michael Ball of the London cast is far better, I think). However as the doomed, dark Fosca Donna Murphy gives one of the most stunning performances I've ever heard. Her understated performance is devistating. Her voice is perfectly suited to the scare and we have one of those all too rare perfect combinations of actor and material.
I have got two defective Passion CD!!.......2006-07-10
Goregous Operetta.......2006-03-26
As for performances, it's the females who own this show. Marin Mazzie is as glorious as ever as Clara (she's even better in Ragtime), and Tony-winner Donna Murphy brings all of the emotion forward in her portrayal of Fosca.
For those who are used to the usual Sondheim, this one may dissapoint. Others, however, will love this opera of love.
Original and Powerful Stuff.......2005-11-20
As a collector of Broadway Cast recordings, I made myself buy the OBC of "Passion" and only by listening to the score did I finally get what Sondheim was striving to accomplish. Every time he takes on a new show Sondheim goes where other composers fear to tread. And, because he is the foremost world-class composer of this generation, everything he writes causes quite a stir. And "Passion" is no exception. There is nothing like it, just like there is nothing like "Follies," "Company," "Pacific Overtures," "Merrily We Roll Along," "A Little Night Music," "Assassins," "The Frogs," and "Bounce." And there never will be because as long as he continues to write Sondheim will always expand the envelope of the American Musical form.
Thank God he does.

Amazon.com essential recording
Carousel may have been one of Rodgers & Hammerstein's least popular shows at the time, but it's now considered one of the duo's most compelling offerings, and there are plenty of good recordings to choose from. Nicholas Hytner's much-praised production originated in London (with a cast album available on RCA/Victor) before successfully opening at Lincoln Center in New York. The CD's nicely illustrated booklet gives a fair idea of Bob Crowley's spectacular sets and costumes, which went a long way in helping Hytner reinvent the show (he got rid of "The Highest Judge of All," for instance). The American cast (only Michael Hayden's Billy Bigelow appeared in both cities) is as good as it gets, with special kudos going to Audra McDonald and her heavenly "Mister Snow." The original recording may have historical value, but this one's artistically and vocally top-notch. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
An American Masterpiece, Great Recording.......2006-07-23
I don't think I need to expound on the talents af Audra MacDonald, just listen to one verse of anything she sings and you will know. Astonishing!
The Carousel Waltz is my alltime favorite piece of music and what a joy to have such an outstanding recording of it in it's entirety. The memory of Carousel's opening to The Carousel Waltz will remain with me forever. Brilliant!
Now if we could just get a revival of South Pacific with this kind of quality!!
Amazing!.......2006-07-05
New versions superior to time-tested classics?.......2003-11-09
This recording however is not. True, the new revival(s) is visualy spectacular, but as many of the other reviews have already said, the casting of the two leads is unfortuneately sub-par (though Ms.Murphy isn't that bad; Consider her predecessors.) I love the show, and I honestly think the 1956 film recording with Gordan Mac Rae and Shirley Jones is far superior vocally and emotioally.
Carousel is a shining example of sophistication oddly ahead of its time. I truly belive that the show should have, if not the affection then the respect of even the most discriminating theatre afficiando.
Were we all listening to the same recordings?!!.......2003-02-07
Michael Hayden does a much much MUCH better singing job here than in London, and Sally Murphy is a very touching Julie, as opposed to Joanna Riding's love-me-or-I'll-beat-you-up approach.
Now enough with the comparisons. Shirley Verrett sings an unusually touching and tender "You'll never walk alone," and Audra McDonald and Eddie Korbich have a magical chemistry and wonderful vocal abilities, making this my favorite rendition of "When the Children are Asleep."
But what I love most about this recording is that it is so energetic and heartfelt both in the singing and in the orchestra, that one can't help but feel the sheer humanity of the characters, their joy, pain, and heart, which is lacking in every other recording I've heard.
Buy the 1993 London Cast Recording.......2001-07-27
While I am a huge fan of the Nicholas Hytner "Carousel," I have to agree with Arne Andersen that this recording misses the mark. The casting is poor, the performances are weak and the numbers just don't have the dramatic impact they have on the London recording made a year earlier.
As a huge fan of R&H and of American musical theatre, I must urge you not to purchase this disc. I only bought it to have a recording of "Give It to 'Em Good, Carrie." It's not worth spending (money) just for that.
