My intro to 20th century music...........2005-11-16

When I was in Dr. Knowles music appreciation class in college, I questioned the validity of modern 'art' music, because I didn't understand it (then). Silly me. He recommended John Adams. The local music store, which was stocked heavily with rap and techno and the like, was very limited in their classical selections. This was the only one they had, so I took a chance and bought it. Talk about opening my eyes (and ears).... the vocal works are absolutely mind blowing. Fog Tropes was a little creepy, but it definitely grew on me. You can call this my gateway CD, because I've been searching out 20th century since then. Thanks Dr. Knowles. :)

A Collection of Music Apropos of our Time.......2003-04-18

With this country once again stunned by a yet another war, we find ourselves in a place where solace and nurturing are necessary and deeply needed. This collection of American composers' works that span a century has been lovingly assembled by John Adams and is performed by the usually conductorless Orchestra of St Lukes here under Adams' direction. The disc opens with the hauntingly beautiful Charles Ives' THE UNANSWERED QUESTION and proceeds with five of his best loved songs for voice and small orchestra performed with subtle clarity and undersatement by Dawn Upshaw in tandem with the orchestra. The last of these songs 'Serenity' blooms into the Ingram Marshall moody and exspansive exploration of fog and foghorns in FOG TROPES. Morton Feldman's quietly simple elegy for his piano teacher 'MADAME PRESS DIED LAST WEEK AT NINETY' is followed with John Adams own 'EROS PIANO', a work written as a memoriam/elegy at the death of Morton Feldman. The disc closes with David Diamond's plangent orchestral work 'ELEGY IN MEMORY OF MAURICE RAVEL'. Only on a CD could such programming exist and we are indebted to John Adams for creating this tenderly profound concert which, though recorded in 1989, seems immensely suitable for listening to today.

Pleasant, But Uneven.......2001-01-18

The major work on this CD in terms of length is John Adams' Eros Piano, approximately 15 minutes. As a solo piano work, it is somewhat more purcussive than his orchestral compositions, but, nonetheless, well worth the listen.

The five Charles Ives songs sung by Dawn Upshaw are a treat, as she brings fine musicianship to anything she approaches. The works by Feldman and Diamond are interesting, new experiences, but I find that I will have to expend considerable effort to be able to come to terms with and appreciate the work by Marshall.

Not the best Ives.......2000-01-31

If you want to find out about Charles Ives this isn't the best CD to start out with. Try, "Charles Ives: Quarta sinfonia" or a recording of "The Unanswered Question" these are the works that caused me to fall in love with Ives and only then did his songs make any sense.

Might as well be in a cemetery~!.......1998-10-24

This CD is GREAT. It's moody, almost creepy, but never boring. It would be the perfect music for Halloween or to listen while taking a stroll in the cemetery. I've played it a number of times over the years, and I never get tired of listening to it. Adams and Ives are wonderful composers!

Popular Pieces for Trumpet & Organ.......2007-05-17

This is a very sweet recording of famous and lesser-known whistleable melodies. Antonsen's tone and style is superb and affecting. I would like to have heard a little more of Wayne Marshall, who plays very quietly and has been recorded perhaps slightly too far back on the sound stage. The disc is worth the price for Vocalise alone, but there's 26 tracks, each one a miniature marvel.

The Last Marshall.......2006-07-05

Adam Marshall write all of his songs. And he was one of the many soliders who went over to Iraq. Just so you can hear his song "Cowboy Hat" is reason enough to buy his cd. But if i must say all of his songs are MUST HEAR songs. "Come Home As Fast As You Can" is a song everyone in the world must hear. "cowbot hat, come home as fast as you can, honest man, another man, and the last marshall" are my top 5 favorite songs from him, but there are still 5 another songs on the cd for everyone to hear. I know this cd has some bad reviews, but i give it 5 stars. Because 1) he actually wrote all of the songs 2) he sings like a true cowboy would sing 3) ALL of his songs are wonderful 4) i love the music video for "Cowboy Hat" 5) JUST BUY IT AND LISTEN TO IT. EVEN if you don't like it keep listening to it trust me after awhile you're love his sings. It's not the best, but i know it's way way way better then your singing!!! so just but it already!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst country album since Billy Ray Cyrus.......2005-11-15

This album epitomizes cliche country themes, while exploiting the honor one holds by being a veteran. Lyrically, the songs have no depth. The songs hold no groove, have no style, and the vocals are often off key. I do not recommend this album to anyone, unless one needs a silver coaster.

I agree with both other reviewers re the duo coronet/organ arrangements on SOME of the bands of Disk #2 I have, but McCann plays them very well and the organ is fine if you like the organ (which I don't). BUT, the OTHER BANDS include orchestra and on ALL bands McCann really plays beautifully. However, I will not buy another disk of these because of the duo performance bands and - WHAT A SHAME as ALMOST ALL THE PIECES REALLY ARE AMONG WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL and MANY are very difficult, if not impossible, to find ANY arrangement of (though at least half on each cd readily avail other perfs arrangements).

Thought I was purchasing a nice compendium of beautiful songs to listen to on long trips. You'd better love the golden cornet if you buy this CD - or, rather, 5 CDs!

Hope you like the "Golden Cornet" and organ..........2000-03-19

This CD set has all the greatest melodies... only they are performed by some guy and his "golden cornet" (a horn). There is accompaniment by an organ. This set WOULD have been great, IF it was performed by a piano. Huge disappointment. Would have been nice to know what instrument was used to begin with.

This is honestly the worst collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Music ever. If you've never heard his music before, stick to getting an official CD. The sound quality, arrangements, and voices on these make it feel like it was recorded in someone's basement. Just absolutely HORRID!!! I ended up just throwing it out. Take my word for it, DON'T BUY THIS COLLECTION, or any other ALW stuff you see that says "Orlando Pops Orchestra" Just look what people are selling it for used. That should say enough.
