3 out of 5 stars 2 and a half stars - this is pretty mediocre stuff.......2006-05-10

Culled from the vaults of Aubrey Mayhew's Little Darlin' records (and Certron Records), comes this collection of "should have been hits", or rather, mostly average or below average music, with the occasional winner. Most of these songs sound very dated, and the fact that most of them appear on this cd in mono when stereo remixes shouldve been easily possible, considering they all would've been recorded from the mid 1960's onward, makes this cd a little less desirable.

Some low points:
Talk About Me by Dugg Collins, this was released in 1970 on Certron records, and is a generic country music track with below average sounding vocals that do stay on pitch...but the guy does not have a good singer's voice.

Hurtin' Losers Song by Eddie Reday, average music with aincent sounding vocals...the stereo mix also sounds modern....perhaps it should've been a hit if it had been recorded in 1951 with 1951 equipment....but certainly not anytime after 1962 (which would be when this was recorded as Aubrey Mayhew didn't start Little Darlin' Records until 1966).

Some of the highlights:
All American Boy by Bill Johnson, this is just a fun version of a song that really could never sound bad. The guy also doesn't have a bad country singer's voice...but it too would've probably been a hit if it had been released years before.

Half Empty Bed - Frank Meyers, This one sounds like it's from the late 1970's and has a semi-disco feel to it due to the drums...it could've possibly been a minor pop charting record if it didn't have all of the country instruments in the mix.

I guess my biggest complaint about this cd is the lack of wide stereo mixes on most songs. Also, several of the songs' vocals sound too whiny to be hits in more modern years....most of the songs on the cd were released about one or two decades too late. The cd is okay if you like older style country vocal singing, but don't spend a lot of money for a bunch of songs you've never heard of....listen to previews of the songs on itunes first or find the cd very cheaply.

4 out of 5 stars Off-the-radar country oldies from the 1950s, '60s and '70s..........2005-10-03

A fun, funky set of obscuro country recordings, drawn from deep in the vaults of Aubrey Mayhew's now-defunct indie label, Little Darlin'... If you like rare, oddball material, this disc is for you... Some of these songs are really goofy, some are really great.

4 out of 5 stars A small sample of their genius.......2004-12-08

This album of beautiful jangling power pop contains at least one big UK hit, their version of I Only Want To Be With You. The omission of their other UK top ten hit, So Good To Be Back Home Again, is inexplicable.

In addition, the magnificent Blind Among The Flowers and The Loneliest Man In The World were minor hits. I agree that the rest should have been big hits too, especially Don't Say I Told You So, Angels And Demons and Circular Fever.

The core of The Tourists of course went on to achieve international fame and fortune as Eurythmics, but The Tourists themselves have been neglected and underestimated. There is a certain bittersweet quality to their jangly pop that is quite unique, whilst the melodies are strong and the vocals superb.

Good as this album is, it is unfortunately not comprehensive enough. To experience the Tourists in all their glory, I recommend the Greatest Hits album with its 20 tracks. It includes all of their gems like the aforementioned classics plus In The Morning (When The Madness Has Faded), All Life's Tragedies, Everywhere You Look and So You Want To Go Away Now.

Album Description

Though this collection features many new comers and lesser-known bands in the synthpop scene, every song is one that shouldn't be missed. This highly praised compilation throws the spotlight on some hidden treasures of the melancholy synthpop moods that work on and off the dance floor, best played when the lights are dim...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars .......2001-03-05

Todd Durrant, of A Different Drum, has once again put together a really cool compilation. This double CD focuses on the songs a dj might play after the crowds have thinned and only the most dedicated "shadow dance" to the beats. Included is a fresh mix of slammin' club tracks as well as some melodic slower tunes. There should be something here to please everyone, from fans of synth-pop, to goth, to darkwave. With 21 tracks, it's a bargain. It's also a good way to discover new bands.

Album Description

The "Shadow Dancing" 2CD compilation was so popular that it won best compilation in the American Synthpop Awards for the year 2000. This new 3CD set continues on the same path, collecting lesser-known synthpop treasures from the underground to throw them in the well deserved spotlight.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars For those who like to synthpop.......2003-03-03

This music deserves a to be heard by a wider audience.
Let everyone else keep there Avril's and Sum 41's. This
music stirs something in me. Good synth music with intelligent
lyrics, and a great bargain for three cds worth of synth pop
goodness. Try it and like it.

5 out of 5 stars A quintessential collection.......2001-06-08

A different drum did it again. This is a must for any synth-pop (or techno-pop) fan. Groups sound influenced by Depeche Mode, Camouflage and Erasure. And if you just want to get a sampling of some cool synth music, this is a great place to start. I like buying compilations because it give me a good idea of what new bands to look out for. Rather than buy the entire album, I like to find out what groups I like so I can buy their album next.

4 out of 5 stars Eurythmics B4 they knew who they were..........2000-12-04

Good over all album (it is a sort of "best of") Here are my favorites, listed by track#:

1. I Only Want to be With You - This is a great cover of an old Dusty Springfield song - and the reason I bought the album. I had no idea that Annie and Steve had been in a previous band until I heard this song.

4. Blind Among the flowers - Good groove, classic early E. Sound

8. Circular Fever - Excellent layered, full sound - Yummy!

9. Angels & Demons - Another great, full-bodied sound

10. From the Middle Room - A super instrumental - I LOVE this one.

It's too bad that the best songs on the album don't have samples! I've since purchased the Luminous Basement (Awsome!) and the "Greatest Hits" which duplicates many of the songs on "Should have been.." plus some extras. If you're a true Annie fan, you'll want all three of these albums!

Music Album:

  1. Sing The Hits of Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson (karaoke)
  2. Small Town Things
  3. Sometimes a Rose
  4. Star Profile
  5. Stardust/One for the Road/Honeysuckle Rose [Box set]
  6. That's What I Like About the West
  7. The Essential Sun Collection
  8. The Last Marshall
  9. The People Some People Choose To Love
  10. The Promise
