4 out of 5 stars Ray Stevens - Greatest Comic Hits.......2005-08-11

I enjoyed this CD very much. Ray is a very funny fellow.
I have also seen and enjoyed his video of the same name.

5 out of 5 stars Ray's first for CURB.......2003-02-05

this was the first CD that was released on Ray from CURB Records, the label he joined after he left MCA after five huge years (1984-1989). this CD spotlights 10 comedy songs with the album cover shot looking like a promo for one of the songs, "It's Me Again, Margaret". all in all, this CD went GOLD primarily because of the last track: "Bridget the Midget", a 1970 satire on go-go dancers that hit #50 pop and #2 in England. in the CD age, "Bridget the Midget" was new to collector's. for fans who joined the Ray Stevens bandwagon in 1984 at the height of "Mississippi Squirrel", hearing older songs were a rare treat. this is the CD in which introduced me to "Bridget..." and it made me hunger for more of his older songs because the way i saw it, if a song of his is this great and i've never heard of it talked about before, i wonder how many OTHER great songs are hidden on his albums that critics or reporters don't talk about? i played my hunch and as of 2/5/03 i have everything he's recorded since 1967 on vinyl or cassette format.this 1990 CD is only necessary for new fans. CURB shrewdly compiled six comedy songs off 1987's "GREATEST HITS", added three from 1987's "GREATEST HITS, VOL. TWO", and they end it with 1970's "Bridget the Midget" not found on any CD compilation at the time as an added feature. prior to it's arrival on CD format, you had to go all the way back to a 1977 vinyl compilation entitled "THE MANY SIDES OF RAY STEVENS" to even find "Bridget the Midget" on an album! the song was THAT rare! since 1990, other CD's on Ray have greatly dwarfed this CD's importance but it's still worth checking out for those who want to complete your collection.

5 out of 5 stars classic album.......2003-02-05

who could resist buying this album? it was his first to go Platinum and in 1987 he was amidst his remarkable MCA "comeback" (in terms of sales, his singles always sold but albums were the big thing in country music and his signing to MCA in 1984 was the start of his reign as the King of Country Comedy...or, the Clown Prince of Country Music, whichever one you prefer.)on this particular album, we hear nine of his pop/country hits, with the 1969 remake of "Ahab the Arab" thrown into the mix. the liner notes are by Ronnie Pugh. dead-serious fans like me will notice that the "Shriner's Convention" on this album is the original ballad-style recording from late 1979, not the rushed version that appears on RCA's 1985 album, "COLLECTOR'S SERIES". the reason that this album hit Platinum so quickly has to do with three recordings: 1974's five million selling #1 "The Streak"; 1984's "It's Me Again, Margaret"; and 1984's "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival". i have often sat dumbfounded as to why "GREATEST HITS" from 1987 sold in the millions but 1983's "GREATEST HITS" on RCA barely reached GOLD status? then it hit me that the 1983 album was not promoted right or my theory that the inclusion of the 1984 songs boosted the sales of the 1987 album. whatever, this 1987 "GREATEST HITS" is a great album for the budget-minded people just getting interested in Ray's career following his out of the blue hit "Osama Yo' Mama" in mid 2002. for those who've been fans for decades like me, this album, by now, has become just another hits package since Rhino and Varese Sarabande has since released numerous rare and out of print songs on CD format along along side the 10 songs featured on "GREATEST HITS". those CDs might be expensive to some so stick to this and 1987's "GREATEST HITS, VOLUME TWO" which have by now become very affordable in cassette/CD form because of their age (the 1987 albums are 18 years old and the fact that they're still in print stands for something!)

5 out of 5 stars the best songs of the funniest music artist of all time.......2003-01-26

Ray Stevens has to be the funniest music artist of all time. He has been recording songs since the '50's and has to his credit some of the most hilarious songs in both the pop and country and western genres. And yet the only 2 Grammy awards he ever received (as of 2002) were for serious songs: his inspirational and uplifting "Everything Is Beautiful", and his bluegrass rendition of "Misty", both of which are featured on this Greatest Hits album (in audio cassette form they comprise the final song on sides A and B). This album contains his very best, beginning with "The Streak" which is perhaps his best known song. Side B of the cassette version begins with my person favorite "The Mississipi Squirrel Revival", a song which I remember being played almost on a daily basis back in the mid '80's on the country station I listened to growing up. This album is the first Ray Stevens album I ever listened to my mother having bought my dad a copy of the cassette version back when it first came out in '87. I own both the cassette and cd version myself, and out of all the Ray Stevens albums I've listened to this is overall the best. Its got his funniest songs, and the best of his serious side as well.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific recording of "Misty".......2002-02-11

Ray Stevens has recorded some great songs, many of them making the listener laugh. The recording of "Misty" makes me smile. It's very upbeat, somewhat distant from the more often recorded romantic versions of the song. It's a happy song I often play as my mddle school students enter the classroom. It starts us off on a high note.

5 out of 5 stars Fell over laughing.......2000-10-29

I really enjoyed remembering the songs.I like the way it was presented. He is great for making me laugh when I felt somber.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits - You betcha!.......2000-07-20

Yes, it does contain what must be (some of) his greatest hits. Great when your feeling that little bit blue - fantastic for listening to in a traffic jam.The only one I can't really get any enjoyment from is 'It's me again Margaret.'; why? My surname is MacBain & my wife's name is Margaret - You figure it out (some of my in-laws have a lower sense of humour than me).Good lyrics, good music - If you're not sure which album of his to get, get this one.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice.......2005-12-13

The only thing I can add to the excellent previous review is that I was pleased to find that this collection contains the version of "Freddie Feelgood" WITHOUT the canned laugh track. It's too bad that if you want a collection of Ray's original versions from the Sixties you have to buy 2 CDs, but aside from the lack of the Mercury versions of "Harry" and "Ahab", this is a good choice for the Monument and Barnaby material.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Ray's music.......2005-03-31

Ray originally tried to establish himself as a serious singer but he met without success until he started recording comic material. The best of his comic songs from the sixties and seventies are here including Ahab the Arab, Gitarzan, Along came Jones, Bridget the midget and The streak.

Having established himself as a comic singer, Ray eventually had some success with more serious songs including Mr Businessman, Sunday morning coming down, Everything is beautiful and Turn your radio on.

One of Ray's best recordings is his cover of Misty. Johnny Mathis recorded this song in the fifties as a tender ballad with lush orchestration, but Ray interprets it as an up-tempo country song.

As the seventies progressed, Ray's fortunes declined. He did a very strange cover of Glenn Miller's In the mood (not included here), in which he posed as a group of chickens. After some quiet years, he had some success with comic songs in the eighties but is you must look elsewhere for Shriner's convention, Mississippi squirrel revival, The haircut song, It's me again Margaret and his other songs from the period.

This serves as a wonderful introduction to Ray's music.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible collection!.......2004-08-10

Ray Stevens is a comedian. He's a songwriter. He's a singer. He's a great performer--whether telling a joke, or provoking the conscience of upper-class America. He has a rich, full-ranged voice, and great piano playing skills. Not to mention some of the funniest voices in music. Who can beat his camel noise?

This album came as a surprise to me. I knew Stevens could be a serious singer ("Everything Is Beautiful" is an incredible song) but I hadn't expected this CD to contain so many serious numbers. I was a bit disappointed at first...then I realized that Stevens had something: serious singing/songwriting talent. I mean SERIOUS. This album just proves that Ray Stevens is one of music's best.

He made a name for himself through such comedic novelty hits as "Ahab the Arab," "Gitarzan," and "The Streak;" and to be true, he's a very funny man. But his serious side deserves a mention...and maybe first prize. "Mr. Businessman" is probably the best, most well-written song on here ("Let's have your autograph/Endorse your epitaph") about upper-class people (and those from the lower classes to, of course) who put fame and fortune before humanity. There's "Isn't It Lonley, Together", a heart-wrenching look at a couple gone wrong. "Funny Man" is absolutely stunning, a number about how even the most outgoing of people have tearful secrets. The 1970 song "America, Communicate With Me" deals with the problems concerning Vietnam; "Misty," while not too serious, is an upbeat, chared, blue-grass love song. "Indian Love Call," in the same vein as "Misty," has a steady, listenable groove. And Stevens was the first to record Kris Kristofferson's legendary "Sunday Morning Coming Down." His voice fits the song wonderfully, though the production leaves a bit to be desired.

An incredible collection, an incredible performer. Ray Stevens is one of music's most-overlooked singer/songwriters. That's probably because people take him as a joke--after all, he made his career through comedic songs. But this album with show you that he has a serious side, too, and it is much better than those of many other performers of his era. Ray Stevens may not have legendary status, but he has legendary skill, and that's all it takes.

5 out of 5 stars stunning!!.......2003-01-17

Ray Stevens has not had the typical achievements that qualify for an act to be called a super-star. He never had the consistent #1 hits like Conway Twitty or Merle Haggard; he never had the George Jones type of voice; heck, he's never even won any awards from the ACM, CMA, or the AMA...how can such an act remain so popular for 45 years? one simple reason: Ray Stevens has talent in a wide variety of things. Ray could've easily been happy playing on sessions, writing songs, or producing artists...he did all of those things and more as we all know! This CD highlights 23 songs. it kicks off with the ultra-rare 1960 single "Sgt. Preston of the Yukon", which all Ray Stevens fans know is the turning point in his early career. when his 1957-1959 singles failed to break outside of Georgia, Ray wrote this song about the Canadian mountie but he didn't get permission from King Features Syndicate {owners of Sgt. Presont} and so when NRC released it in 1960, King Features threatened a lawsuit! NRC yanked the song off the market just as it was about to break into the Hot 100 (it peaked at #108!) "Sgt. Preston" was a novelty single and it gave Ray the idea to write and record comedy songs and in 1961 he released "Jeremiah Peabody" on MERCURY and that novelty went to #35 pop and the rest is history.Varese Vintage doesn't spotlight Ray's hyper and motor-mouth Brother Dave Gardner influenced tracks that he recorded for MERCURY in 1961-1963. instead, we're treated to remakes of his MERCURY material. "Ahab the Arab", a 1962 #5 pop and #9 R&B smash, is heard via his famed 1969 remake as is "Harry the Hairy Ape", which originally hit #17 pop #14 R&B in 1963. "Funny Man" originally hit #81 pop in 1963 but the version here is off his 1968 'EVEN STEVENS' album. aside from those three remakes, all the remaining 20 tracks are original recordings. Ray has simply had too many Hot 100 pop and Top 100 country hits during 1961-1991 to really do a definitive collection. Ray's roots are in early R&B and novelty songs and somewhere along the line he was embraced by the country audience and since 1984 he's been officially a country comedian (he's won 10 Music City News Comedian of the Year awards between 1986 and 1994) This CD contains "Everybody Needs a Rainbow", which up until this CD came out, couldn't be found anywhere unless you had the original 45 RPM vinyl single like i've got. i love that song and i also love "Isn't It Lonely Together?", dealing with unwanted pregnancy by two people who really don't love each other but are willing to remain together and raise the baby. This CD is a must for anyone wanting to hear "Sgt. Preston of the Yukon" or "Everybody Needs a Rainbow". i do wish Varese would do a box set on Ray's work because it's so eclectic and innovative. look at the back of the CD and you'll discover that Ray wrote the majority of his hits! for whatever reason, Varese left off every hit that he recorded from 1976's "You Are So Beautiful" to 1991's "Workin' For The Japanese". like i said, Ray's had too many hits in many genres that it's hard to be definitive. since the '90s, Ray has been more associated with his multi million selling home videos but as this CD shows, Ray is much more than the Clown Prince of Country Music.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless songs from a true original.......2002-10-10

I have always loved both the comedy hits and the serious ballads, and the fact that two tracks are not the oiginal recordings is of no concern to me. Songs like Unwind, Mr Businesman and Isn't It Lonely Together reveal lyrical depth and demonstrates his skillful vocal style, while his version of Kristofferson's Sunday Morning Coming Down stands out as one of the most beautiful amongst thousands of interpretations of this classic tune. Everything Is Beautiful wih its children's choir is inspiring and uplifting, America Communicate With Me is impressive and his country version of Misty (1976) is poignant and moving. My favorites amongst the comedy tracks include the energetic little pop opera Bridget The Midget (UK top ten in 1971), The Streak from 1974, and of course the old classics like Ahab, Harry, Gitarzan and Along Came Jones. This collection confirms this singer's originality, his versatility and his considerable songwriting skills. The album will please all those who enjoy literate pop music performed with feeling.

5 out of 5 stars a fabulous spotlight on his serious hits.......2003-01-29

this CD is a great introduction to the serious Ray Stevens four years before Warner Brothers released their 3 CD set of his serious 1976-1979 material. on CURB's 1991 'GREATEST HITS', we have eight hit songs and two album tracks. the non-hits are 1968's "Isn't It Lonely Together" and 1989's "There's a Star Spangled Banner". here's some trivia: the version of "There's a Star Spangled Banner" on this CD is a feminist version that puts a woman in combat in Beirut. the original version off his 1989 'BESIDE MYSELF' album contains a man being in Beirut. "Indian Love Call" includes a brilliant doo-wop arrangement and "Nashville" has a country arrangement.the hits are all great and they showcase his versatility in going from pop, gospel, country, novelty, social commentary, jingoistic, satiric..., etc."Everything is Beautiful" hit #1 pop and #39 country; "Misty" hit #14 pop and #3 country; "Turn Your Radio On" hit #63 pop and #17 country; "Mr. Businessman" hit #28 pop; "Nashville" hit #37 country; "Indian Love Call" hit #68 pop and #38 country; "Along Came Jones" hit #27 pop; and "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex?" hit #41 country. what all of this says is that Ray Stevens had a genre-bending career the likes we will never see again in this restricted age of one artist HAS to be on one format or the other. sure, a country act or a pop act might have a fluke cross-over but there will never be another artist who will chart as consistently country and pop for a long time and get away with it. Ray charted country and pop from 1969 through 1979. he charted pop only in 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1968. he's been on country charts only since 1980.

4 out of 5 stars An odd collection, but a definite must-have.......2000-06-01

From a strictly commercial perspective, this is not a Greatest Hits album. It features only one Top Ten hit, although that one, "Everything is Beautiful" was a number one. The collection has a decidedly country flavor, including songs like "Nashville", "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex" and "There's a Star-Spangled Banner" which did fairly well on the country charts but were virtually ignored on the pop side of the house.

That said, this is not a bad album. In fact, it is a very good album. It displays a versatility that most of Ray's numerous GH collections choose to ignore in favor of focussing on the "musical clown" image. There is the gospel/spiritual influenced "Turn Your Radio On", the socially conscious and fairly successful (Number 28 on the charts) "Mr Businessman", and the profound and somewhat disturbing "Isn't It Lonely Together?", a bittersweet ballad that reveals a surprising depth of feeling. The last two songs alone are worth much more than the price of the album.

If you want to laugh along with Ray Steven's well-known musical histrionics, this isn't the album for you. However, if you want to see and hear Ray in a completely different and very revealing light, this collection is genuine buried treasure. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Ray Stevens: King of Country Comedy.......2002-12-20

Ray Stevens, at the time this album hit the stores, was amidst his 30th Anniversary as a recording artist (having first signed to a label in 1957, PREP Records) and the album was his second volume of "hits" released by MCA. Like the "Volume One" released earlier in 1987, the "Volume Two" is just as enjoyable although i wouldn't have included the 1986 song "Can He Love You Half As Much As I" (i would've substituted that song for an actual chart hit like "Southern Air" or "The People's Court" from 1986... but that's just one minor flaw and that's why i give it four out of five stars)Ray Stevens fans have learned to ignore charts and RIAA sales and all of that stuff because those accolades and achievements overshadow the material in the long run and in a career like Ray's, which is now in it's 45th, such chart hits (or lack thereof) mean very little when you have enviable longevity. Yes, Ray is best known as a novelty artist but he can also perform country, gospel, classic R&B, jazz, and MOR with equal success. "Greatest Hits, Vol. Two" is just another display of a seriously under-rated legend.

3 out of 5 stars Okay for Ray Stevens enthusiasts, but that's about it.......2000-06-01

Even for a "Volume Two" greatest hits collection, this one is weak. The highest charting song offered is the number 28 "Mr Businessman" which, in fairness, is a lot better than that chart position would indicate. However, behind that lie only the marginally successful "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex", "In the Mood" and "Jeremiah Peabody's" twelve word pill bottle. The remainder is even sillier than that.

To keep this in perspective, it should be pointed out that much of Ray Steven's material did better on the country charts than on the pop charts, as is the case with a couple of the cuts offered here. Beyond that, most Stevens fans don't care about chart positions; they just love Ray's unique approach to the world and delightful way of putting that perspective into words and music. In that respect, this album succeeds, as it is genuinely funny. However, as a greatest hits collection, Volume 1, 2, or 57, this one just doesn't cut the mustard.

4 out of 5 stars The RCA money train..........2003-08-22

right off the bat i want to tell everyone that i give this CD/album 4 stars because...well, i'll explain: the year this album originally hit stores was in 1983. RCA issued the album after they dropped him from the label and he went on to Mercury {to release the very rare and obscure "ME" album}. RCA, in whoever's wisdom, decided to showcase just TWO of his RCA recordings and the other eight songs were re-re-re-issues of his earlier hits and fan favorites.Only 1980's "Shriner's Convention" and the fan favorite "The Dooright Family" are genuine RCA material. Again, the album came out in 1983 and they left off all but one of Ray's RCA hits: "Night Games" (1980), "One More Last Chance" (1981), "Where The Sun Don't Shine" (1982), and "It's Written Down In My Heart" (1982). as mentioned earlier, the only RCA hit on here is "Shriner's Convention". RCA redeemed themselves in 1985 with the issue of 'Collector's Series', an eight track highlight of his RCA material but without the monster Top-20 hit "Night Games"...RCA simply needs to re-issue Ray's original vinyl albums onto CD...hint, hint...
