This guy is COUNTRY with capitol letters!.......2006-05-03
in Europe we don't have country radio stations to listen to, the
only way to hear country is buying CD's from the States something
I'm doing since the past 18 months. These mostly are from the
70's and 80's and I am so happy to re-discover all those artists
I used to listen to during my many business trips through the USA
and whose LP's I always brought back after each trip. Now I am
recuperating them on CD and buying many I didn't have then or
didn't even know the existence of. This is the case with Gene
Watson. Last month I received "Ultimate Collection" and gave it
5 stars. Gee, how I love his music. I would have liked to give
these "18 greatest hits" 5 stars as well but again I received a
CD with zero information. Who wrote these songs? When were they
recorded? Does the record company release them this way to cut
down prices? What a shame.

Album Description
Gary Gene Watson never intended on a career in music. When you take a look at the tracks on this Ultimate Collection, it becomes evident his absence would have left a gaping hole in country music, for as one of Nashville's premiere country journalists, Robert K. Oermann, has said, "The world stops spinning when he sings." So, while, as Watson says, "I never did go looking for music, music found me," music was obviously destined for this unassuming man born in Palestine, Texas and raised in Paris, Texas. But because he took his singing in church, and with his 6 siblings, for granted, never considering that it could be a profession, to this day it is difficult for him to trace the origin of his realization that indeed it would end up being the crux of his life. "As far back as I can remember talking, I can remember singing. My brother just younger than me played lead guitar and I was the singer, and we would entertain at a lot of the school functions and local get-togethers. But music was never one of my goals. All I ever dreamed of was working on cars," says Watson, who still enjoys dabbling on cars in his little Houston shop. By 17, he was married (still is, to the same woman he married in 1961), and had to lie about his age to get a job building missile silos in Abilene. Six years later, in 1966, Watson moved to Dallas where an uncle helped him get his first professional job as a singer at a club called The Palms. Still, he didn't take the possibility of making a living at music seriously, until moving to Houston where he formed a band called Gene Watson and the Other Four, dropping the Gary from his name.Customer Reviews:

compilations which you probably liked - Paper Rosie - and
you would like to know more about him GET THIS CD!
I was as astonished about the number of brilliant songs on
this single CD - as when I bought "It couldn't have been any
better" by Johnnie Duncan. This "Ultimate Collection" won't be
the only Gene Watson CD and I already applied for more CD's
by this real C&W singer. Ballads and honky tonk songs
will really cheer you up. The sound quality of the recordings is
brilliant as well. Quite a surprise when at least 21 out of
23 songs on a CD are all great and make you repeat them over
and over. Nowadays with those "pop rock C&W" stars more than
half of their songs can only be heard once. Their just fillers-up. It's impossible to beat those C&W voices from the 70's &
80's. Long Live the real C&W music.

yes it's gold.......2006-10-15
I own these songs on lps but the new cd master sounds so good even on the small speakers of my PC that I can identify a very good new master on cd.
Any one interested in Gene should buy this cd, EVEN WITH TIME YOU WILL LIKE MORE AND MORE THESE SONGS AND NOT THE REVERSE;I recommend to rush as these types of remasterings are not often on the shelf for a long time !
Even while I already own the lps, I buy the cd still.

Can't find the right words to classify this twofer....!.......2006-08-05
casually heard a song of you liked very much, the next step is
to get a "greatest hits" compilation and see if the initial
impression is possitive indeed. When I bought the "Ultimate
Collection" of Gene Watson, I liked it so much that I gave it
5 stars (see one of the previous reviews). Since there were
more "greatest hits" compilations I kept on buying them and
every time I was more impressed with Gene's style of singing
and the selection of songs. Only 2 or 3 weeks ago I bought
his latest CD from 2005 (that means a gap of 16 years)and
again it was 5 stars worth because nothing had changed: a
beautiful way of singing great songs. Finally I decided to
purchase these two original LP's on one CD although I was a
little bit worried about its contents because when any artist
normally has some good songs on a LP or CD there are also
usually some minor songs. Wrong!!! To anyone who likes Gene
Watson or country music in general THIS IS A MUST! I can't
find the right words to describe these two complete LP's on
one CD. There's everything within the country music: rock,
blues, honky tonk, bluegrass even the incredible "jazzy" song
"The Old Man and His Horn" (one of the nicest songs ever
recorded on a country record) and most of all his beautiful
ballads. I have been collecting records for almost 50 years
now and never thouhgt a "new" discovered singer would replace
my preferences on the private list for the best artists around.
However this has happened and I'm glad it did. This guy is
givin' me hours of listening pleasure and I immediatley have
asked for his other double LP on CD released also by the HUX
label. These "packages" are beautifully remastered and the
sound quality is superb.

Album Description
Full Title - Love In The Hot Afternoon & Paper Rosie. The two albums on this CD, drawn from the most commercially successful period of his career, certainly capture Watson in his prime. Love In The Hot Afternoon (1975), his debut on US Capitol, followed hot on the heels of his first national hits, while Paper Rosie (1977) was another early classic and the album that introduced him to British audiences. Both of these albums are digitally remastered and appear together on CD for the first time. Hux. 2002.Album Details

Gene Watson, country music from the heart........2006-11-04
Essential Early Gene Watson.......2005-11-30
LOVE IN THE HOT AFTERNOON features the title cut (originally a Resco single, which was deemed too risque by a few radio stations plus one of my favorite Gene Watson singles "You Could Know As Much About a Stranger" and his first chart entry "Bad Water". The covers selected, particularly "This Is My Week For Mexico" (an album cut for Charley Pride) are also effective.
PAPER ROSIE isn't quite as strong but it too is worth five stars. "Paper Rosie is a story song with a feel and sound similar to another of his singles "The Old Man and His Horn", although not quite as compelling a story. Actually I love all the tracks on this CD except for his cover of "You Gave Me a Mountain, an overly melodratic song (written by Marty Robbins and a hit the writer and a bigger hit for Frankie Laine)that I've always hated. You can never really go wrong buying a Gene Watson collection, and his Capitol recordings are all 5 star endeavors
The albums that set up Gene's career.......2005-08-01
Love in the hot afternoon (from 1975) includes several classic songs. Quite apart from the brilliant title track, these include Bad water, Where love begins and You could know as much about a stranger as well as This is my year for Mexico, a song also recorded by Crystal Gayle and Charley Pride among others.
Brilliant as that album is, I think Paper Rosie is even better. Apart from the title track, other classics include If the shoe fits wear it, Till you can make it on your own, Just at dawn, Don't look at me in that tone of voice and I'd settle for just crossing her mind. There are also outstanding covers of You gave me a mountain (a Marty Robbins song also covered by Elvis Presley), Tennessee sunshine (Porter Wagoner) and Most of all why (Dolly Parton).
If you enjoy traditional country music, you'll love this twofer.

Same voice, same kind of style...what an incredible artist!.......2006-07-19
movie, Paper Rosie and some other Country hits. When I stopped
travelling to the USA I lost track of him and other C&W stars
because in Europe Country music is not popular and there are no
radio stations that broadcast it. About two years ago I found
out about Amazon and from that moment on I've started to collect
all the C&W music available and mostly from the 70's and 80's.
I started out with a C&W DVD set of 4 disks where most of the
artists I knew then were represented. One of them was Gene Watson whose "Ultimate Collection" with 23 songs from those
days seemed so fantastic to me that I decided to keep on buying
most of the CD's released through different companies. And each
and every one is a beauty. What a great artist! His singing
carreer of making hits went on to 1989 with a slight comeback in 1997. Again through Amazon I saw that Gene had a new CD from
2005 and without any hesitation I purchased it without any
knowledge of what songs there were on. And here we go again;
what a great and beautiful CD even though some songs are re-
recorded hits from the 80's but with an incredible group of
famous background musicians. This CD is really a must for all
those who like the "real" Country music. Only one song is out
of place here compared to the others and that's "Everybody needs
a hero". If for any reason (that would be a miracle) Gene would read this review I have one request that would make a "dream
come true". Please re-record or re-release a song that I have
never been able to find anywhere and which I consider one of
your best songs ever. It's called "Carmen" and to my knowledge it was never released on CD.
This May Be the Best Record of His Career.......2006-01-30
The choice of material here is great. Only "Everybody Needs a Hero" seems out of place amoung the 13 tunes. At 63 years of age, Gene proves he can still sing and his experience and musical ear make for a fantastic recording that fans of traditional country music will love.
You'll never hear this on the radio, but..........2005-08-14
"Now and Then" Still Finds Watson At His Country Best .......2005-08-13
Despite country music's obsession with the latest young pactee, this has not stopped a handful of veterans from putting out records, albeit on smaller independent labels. Though Gene Watson's last charted hit was 1997's "Change Her Mind" (which made it to a modest 44th position on the Billboard chart), this has not stopped this Texas native from putting out solidly country albums awash with those moaning fiddles and keening fiddles. Released under the enterprising independent imprint Koch Records, "Now and Then" finds this 61 year old adept reaching back into his copious catalog and re-recording 13 selections. However, this is not a "greatest hits" record per se. Rather, other than "You Could Know As Much" and "Sometimes I Get Lucky" which were top 10 entries, most of these tracks here were either minor hits or album cuts.
Sitting in the producer's chair, Watson has crafted a sonic landscape that has such a rustic ambiance that you can smell the sawdust and taste the Budweiser of a honky tonk. Enlisting the expertise of Nashville's A-list session players such as Bobby All, Sonny Garrish, "Pig" Robbins amongst others, traditional music awash with moaning steel and keening fiddles has never sounded so good. Reveling in the spirit of the honky tonk is the knockout delight of "The Jukebox Played Along." Though "Jukebox" tells the story of a broken hearted man trying to get over his paramour vis-à-vis country music, the lilting tune with its ear grabbing melody is already enough to make any man (or woman) two stepping away from the blues. Despite his age, Watson still knows how to have fun on the buoyant "If I Were You." And on "If I Were You," Watson still shows how he still knows the right moves to get a girl's heart. With a more jazzy feel, Bob Regan's "Only Yesterday," originally an album cut from Watson's "At Last" CD is worthy of being re-cut. Regret has never sounded more alluring on this unforgettable tune that ought to be a country classic by now.
But it's still on the heartbreak ballads that Watson is nonpareil. Current single "I Catch Myself" narrates the struggles of a jilted lover with a diary-like frankness over a hauntingly beautiful tune. Even though it's over 20 years since Watson first recorded "Sometimes I Get Lucky," Watson's re-take of his top 10 hit still reverberates with the same jolt of melancholy. While the less familiar "I Wonder How It is in Colorado" brings to mind George Strait's number 1 hit "Ocean Front Property." With an affecting élan that pulls on the heartstrings, "I Wonder How It is in Colorado" could have been a surefire hit in Strait's hands.
Nevertheless, there's a sense of safeness in these tracks. Though Watson is advancing his forte in traditional country ballads in its most ambrosial light, one would wish Watson would have taken more chances. Instead of reaching back to his catalog and trying to re-live the past, it would be great to see Watson cut a more contemporary CD with newly written songs. With his vocal sensitivity to reach into the deeper recesses of the heart and with a whole batch of new songs, Watson will be in the right position to knock out some punches across the country airwaves.
