Editorial Reviews

Disney' s Family Fun Magazine, February, 2003
"a conversational singing style that's instantly engaging, an ear for an infectious tune, and fun-to-sing lyrics. "

Product Description:
Winner of Parent's Choice Silver Honor, Children's Music Web's Best Recording for Toddlers (3-5) and Best Recording for Young Children (5-8) and discovery.com's Award of Excellence.

"Fun and Games," continues in the tradition of Ben Rudnick & Friends’ award winning "Emily Songs," providing great music for kids of all ages and their parents. Happy bouncy rhythms and some real silliness are mainstays; now they’re joined by the sounds of the islands as well as fun spins on some old classics. Not only does Jeff Bird (the Cowboy Junkies) again grace the CD with his harmonica and range of percussive talents, Margo Timmons brings her Cowboy Junkies trademark voice to the lullaby "Everything is Alright."

It’s not hard to figure out why this CD is called "Fun and Games." Songs like "Spin" and "Macaroni & Cheese" will have kids (and adults) laughing out loud as they recognize themselves in the lyrics. "Hopscotch" is, naturally, about that classic game, while "Sally Salamander" weaves a tale that keeps kids guessing about what will happen next.

But the real story behind the "Fun and Games" name is the attitude; this CD is so positive, you can’t help but feel good listening to it.

Fun and Games

Fun and Games,Ben Rudnick and Friends,Listen Up Records,Winner of a Parents' Choice Silver Award and two Children's Music Web Gold Awards. Exciting, feel good music for the whole family with adventurous musicianship throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Have loved it and used it for 8 years.......2006-01-21

I've had a home day care for ten years, teen ministry for ten years and been a mom for 19 years. I still play this cd in day care once a week! The kids absolutely love it, and I'm not sick of it. I think that says a lot. I've used it over the years at girl scout game days, toddler play dates, Young Life clubs, you name it. Other leaders have borrowed it, and I like it well enough that I still have it around after all these years.

3 out of 5 stars Hokey Pokey, Chicken Dance.......1999-12-29

I bought this for my 3-year-old who loves to do the hokey pokey and the chicken dance. I was really disappointed with the hokey pokey. It is VERY fast and hard to keep up with. I was looking for a CD with the songs you dance to at weddings. The other songs aren't catching for a 3-year-old. I did like the name game. It has a fun beat and my kids love dancing around the house to it.

4 out of 5 stars didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22

I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.

3 out of 5 stars Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20

If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.

Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.

5 out of 5 stars It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22

My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.

"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.

All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!

4 out of 5 stars a lost gem.......2004-10-14

i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.

1 out of 5 stars Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19

BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

5 out of 5 stars Great college rock from the 80's........2007-01-09

I was a freshman in college in Virginia when I was introduced to the Connells. Wow. What a great college-rock band. Good music, great lyrics, and catchy hooks throughout. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Brings back great memories!!!.......2006-01-16

I love this cd! This brings back so many memories!! My friends and I would listen to this every day we saw them in concert twice! I love to bring this cd out and play it, remembering fun times with friends!!

5 out of 5 stars Linda's...Hector's...He's Not...Frat Court..........2005-07-12

T'his CD is just as excellent as it was during my 4 years at UNC. I wish I had appreciated the Connells more when they were playing around RTP when I was at Chapel Hill. It seemed like everyone in my dorm, Teague, freshman and sophomore years, had the Connells playing non-stop. (OK they were also playing Vanilla Ice and Dee-Lite too.) When I hear it now it makes me homesick for NC and wistful that they didn't "hit the big time." Although, of course, if they had, they might be sitting in as guest-judges on American Idol or something equally hideous. So I'll just sit back and remember downstairs at Linda's, the old Hector's before it burned, Bllue Cups at He's Not and Frat Court after football games, and be thankful the Connells are part of my college memories.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sweet muuusic.......2003-06-19

Ah, college! Yes, this cd was one of the many that I considered "only appreciated by me". Wrong..this, Elvis Costello, Ocean Blue, etc. were great albums, then and now. All songs-great. The price-worth it at any cost.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem of a Band.......2003-06-17

I was going to U. of North carolina in late '80s when it looked like these guys were going to make it big. They never did, but that just makes their music more intimate. FUN & GAMES is one of their best albums, had the most airplay of any of their efforts. The only weak song, in my opinion, is "Sal". "Something to Say", Fun & Games", and "Hey Wow" are great tunes, with just enough angst in the lyrics and vocals to give it an edge. I just bought a bunch of their CDs to replace old cassettes, was pleased to hear a new track on this CD, "Fine Tuning". Great song. You'll enjoy this CD.

I bought this when my son turned 4. The first song, "Happy, Happy Birthday to You", I play every year on his birthday to wake him up. Tomorrow he turns 13, and as tradition carries on, I'll be carrying in the player to wake him up, with that special song along with me singing.

The entire tape has cute songs for birthday parties, or just for little ones to enjoy while playing by themselves.

My eight year old granddaughter and I listen, laughing as we try to sing the silly songs (the lyrics are included). As a recently retired teacher, I believe it builds her linguistic skills but she simply finds it silly and fun. Although she likes them all, she is best at Oodles and Oodles of Noodles.

        Album Description

Winner of Parent's Choice Silver Honor, Children's Music Web's Best Recording for Toddlers (3-5) and Best Recording for Young Children (5-8) and discovery.com's Award of Excellence.

"Fun and Games," continues in the tradition of Ben Rudnick & Friends' award winning "Emily Songs," providing great music for kids of all ages and their parents. Happy bouncy rhythms and some real silliness are mainstays; now they're joined by the sounds of the islands as well as fun spins on some old classics. Not only does Jeff Bird (the Cowboy Junkies) again grace the CD with his harmonica and range of percussive talents, Margo Timmons brings her Cowboy Junkies trademark voice to the lullaby "Everything is Alright."

It's not hard to figure out why this CD is called "Fun and Games." Songs like "Spin" and "Macaroni & Cheese" will have kids (and adults) laughing out loud as they recognize themselves in the lyrics. "Hopscotch" is, naturally, about that classic game, while "Sally Salamander" weaves a tale that keeps kids guessing about what will happen next.

But the real story behind the "Fun and Games" name is the attitude; this CD is so positive, you can't help but feel good listening to it.
