Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26

I can't see paying full price for a two-CD compensdium, even one as lavish as this package, when all the itmes are samples for promoting Universal's catalog (expect a good representation by Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, Previn, and Gergiev). But the selection is good enough and often rare eough to warrant a buy if the price is low.

As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.

What a great line-up of singers on this disc! Although Campions' songs are written as solo songs he stated at the time that they may also be enjoyed as part songs. On this CD they are tastefully mixed both vocally and instrumentally. There are trios with soprano, tenor, baritone and lute where the lute is treated almost like another voice part. Each of the singers has a solo or two and Chance has several. It is also good to keep in mind that Thomas Campion (l567-l620) was a poet as well as a musician who had the capability of putting together the two art forms, words and music. As he says, "lovingly coupled together." From over 100 songs it was difficult to select only 25, but Campion helped us by placing his prize songs often at the beginning of a volume. And it is certainly appropriate to present these chosen songs with varied vocal combinations. My favorites are the last three on the album: "The Sypres curten of the night is spread" (Michael Chance); "Author of Light" (quartet:(Elliott-soprano;Chance-countertenor;Padmore-tenor;Harvey -baritone) and "Never weather-beaten Saile" (Chance).

Long neglected classic!!.......2005-08-15

Gene was an inspiration to many of the new "real" country singers (Randy Travis springs to mind). He has a strong, great voice & the songs on this CD are not only well chosen, but have lovely arrangements.

From the smooth voice urging you "Don't Waste It On The Blues"to a song co-writing by Randy Travis - "The Great Divide," understanding but very much lamenting a mutual breakup, to a cover of Lefty Frizell's "She Found The Key" to "The Jukebox Played Along," that sounds as if it could have been written/recorded by Merle Haggard, this CD sounds as if was recorded by one of the great Honky Tonk singers of the early '60's.

Watson had a pretty long career and he thanks several people on the liner, saying the album was a new start & career for him. I guess he wasn't as young or as "camera ready" as some of the others who had just started when this came out (Alan Jackson, Clint Black. and others) so wasn't attractive to CMT.

I first owned it on vinly when in England on its release in 1988. I guess it might seem weird for an English ex-hippie/punk music listener to enjoy good country music, but I always have & recognize great music no matter what genre!

As it was, this really is a hidden classic of a great singer accompanied by accomplished musicians delivering the best in real country.

Delightful!.......2005-02-17

me and my girlfriends so enjoy listening to the let me take you back collection of kerri's. we gather for weekly coffee "breaks" at each others houses, and kerri's music is always playing in the background. it provides a fun and light atmosphere and brings back such wonderful memories! the piano versions of the songs are flawless, and it's a worthy investment.

How Original!.......2004-08-21

If you're tired of hearing classics turned into elevator music then don't buy this CD. Kerri's music is the pits and enough to put you into a comatose state for years. I've heard better music played on a washboard!
