Outstanding group, not-so-outstanding CD.......2001-10-26

As is often the case on CDs consisting of previously unreleased tracks, on listening to the CD, you begin to realize why the tracks were not released earlier. Even the liner notes have a kind of apologetic tone to them, saying things to the effect of "yeah, I know this is a lousy recording, but it's all we had."

Die hard fans (and I consider myself one of them) will want to get this CD simply because it does contain some songs you can't get any other way, but none of the songs on the CD really grabbed me the way "Isaac's Lament" or "Silent Night" did.

I would recommend you buy "The Inessential Uncle Bonsai" (ASIN B000003Y0V) if you're looking for a good introduction to Uncle Bonsai.

I have enjoyed Uncle Bonsai since they performed in Seattle in the early 80's. I always enjoy a new release of theirs!

Souled in a Plain Brown Wrapper gave my soul a stir. The beauty of watching fireflies dance at 1am is what I felt when I listened to the Soultree CD. The sleek vocal style of Susan Crandall is a welcomed change to an industry that is chalked full of carbon copies. While maintaining a sensual contralto vocal range, she dazzles the eardrums with truth and reality. Lyrically this album hits you with a dose of in your face realism. With songs like Pissed Off, Famous, Afraid and Sexy Thing, Soultee takes you on a musical joyride. This album is mature, classy, edgy and a little cocky. The band does an excellent job of fusing rock, folk and funk. Track 3 Wanna Be is my absolute favorite. It is one of those songs that gives you chills when you hear the intro. Haunting and sexy, it tells the story of a lover who has her mind made up that she can’t accept being second. Musically the album soars. The band as a whole is tight and each musician has put in serious work. There were instances where would have liked to hear Susan take more risks vocally. I have a sneaky suspicion there is more to this Diva than meets the ear. I’m sure we can expect even more of a powerhouse on any future albums. Throughout the CD there are great songs that reach out and grab you. Was my soul stirred? Yes it was. This is positively a must have CD.

This album is cool. Sounds like a bunch of stoned hippy punks getting together for a real head-trip of a musical experience. Check out "Crazy for your love" "Stet" "Punk of Today" and of course the glorious "Heat's Risin / Jehovah's Witness" Your life will never be the same...
